6 Ma la giustizia che viene dalla fede, dice così: Non dire in cuor tuo: Chi salirà in cielo? cioè per farne discendere il Cristo:

Lettura 4
L’Apostolo Andrea nacque a Betsaida, borgo della Galilea, ed era fratello di Pietro e discepolo di Giovanni Battista: avendo sentito dire da questo del Cristo: «Ecco l'Agnello di Dio» Gv 1,36 egli seguì Gesù e gli condusse pure suo fratello. Più tardi mentre pescava col fratello nel mare di Galilea, chiamati tutti e due prima di tutti gli altri apostoli dal Cristo Signore che passava, con quelle parole; «Venite dietro a me, vi farò diventare pescatori d'uomini» Mt 4,19, subito, senza frapporre indugi, abbandonate le reti, lo seguirono. Dopo la sua passione e risurrezione, Andrea andò a predicare la fede di Cristo nella provincia toccatagli, la Scizia d'Europa, poi percorse l'Epiro e la Tracia; e colla predicazione e i miracoli convertì a Cristo innumerevoli persone. Quindi giunto a Patrasso, città dell'Acaia, condusse moltissimi alla verità del Vangelo, riprese coraggiosamente il proconsole Egea, che resisteva alla predicazione del Vangelo, perché mentre voleva essere riconosciuto giudice dei suoi simili, si lasciava ingannare dai demoni a tal punto da misconoscere Cristo Dio giudice di tutti.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. L'uomo di Dio veniva condotto ad essere crocifisso: ma il popolo gridava ad alta voce, dicendo:
* Egli è innocente, è condannato a morte senza ragione.
℣. Mentre Io conducevano a crocifiggere, si radunò una gran folla di popolo che gridava e diceva.
℟. Egli è innocente, è condannato a morte senza ragione.

Benedizione. Cristo ci doni le gioie della vita eterna.

Lettura 5
Allora Egea irritato: «Finiscila, gli disse, di vantare il Cristo, che propositi simili non gl'impedirono d'essere crocifisso dai Giudei». Ma siccome Andrea continuava a predicare intrepidamente che Cristo s'era offerto da se stesso alla croce per la salvezza del genere umano, egli l'interruppe con un discorso empio, esortandolo infine a provvedere alla sua salute sacrificando agli dèi. Allora Andrea: «Per me c'è un solo vero Dio onnipotente, al quale io sacrifico sull'altare ogni giorno, non già le carni dei tori né il sangue dei capri, ma l'Agnello senza macchia; e dopo che tutto il popolo dei credenti s'è cibato della sua carne, l'Agnello ch'è stato immolato, rimane sempre intero e vivo». Perciò Egea acceso d'ira lo fece gettare in prigione: donde il popolo avrebbe facilmente liberato Andrea, se questi non avesse calmata la moltitudine, supplicandola istantemente di non impedirgli di arrivare alla desideratissima corona del martirio.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. O buona croce, che ricevesti lo splendore e la bellezza dalle membra del Signore, ritirami dagli uomini e rendimi al mio maestro:
* Affinché per te mi riceva colui che per te m'ha redento.
℣. Il beato Andrea, stese le mani verso il cielo, pregava dicendo: Salvami, o buona croce.

Lettura 6
Poco dopo essendo stato condotto davanti al tribunale, Egea non potendolo più soffrire perché esaltava il mistero della croce e gli rimproverava ancora la sua empietà, comandò che lo si mettesse in croce per fargli imitare la morte di Cristo. Andrea, giunto al luogo del martirio, al vedere la croce cominciò ad esclamare da lontano: «O buona croce, resa gloriosa dalle membra del Signore, lungamente desiderata, ardentemente amata, continuamente cercata e finalmente preparata all'animo mio bramoso, ritirami dagli uomini e rendimi al mio maestro; affinché per te mi riceva colui che per te m'ha redento». Egli fu dunque appeso alla croce: sulla quale restò appeso vivo due giorni, non cessando mai di predicare la fede di Cristo, andandosene poi a lui, la cui morte aveva bramato d'imitare. I preti e i diaconi dell'Acaia, che scrissero la sua passione, attestano d'aver udito e visto tutte queste cose così come sono state raccontate. Le sue ossa furono trasportate prima a Costantinopoli sotto l'imperatore Costante, e poi ad Amalfi. Il suo capo, portato a Roma sotto il Pontificato di Pio II, fu collocato nella basilica di san Pietro.

Omelia 5 sul Vangelo.
Avete udito, fratelli carissimi, che al primo cenno di voce, Pietro e Andrea, abbandonate le reti, seguirono il Redentore. Non lo avevano ancora veduto fare alcun miracolo, non lo avevano udito parlare del benefizio d'una ricompensa eterna: e tuttavia al primo ordine del Signore, dimenticano e abbandonano ciò che possiedono. E noi quanti suoi miracoli non ve diamo, da quante prove non siamo ammaestrati, da quante terribili minacce atterriti, eppure disprezziamo la sua chiamata?
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Sant'Andrea pregava, guardando il cielo, e gridando con gran voce dice va: Tu sei il mio Dio, che ho già visto, non permettere ch'io sia deposto (dalla croce) da un giudice empio:
* Perché ho provata la virtù della santa croce.
℣. Tu sei il Cristo, il mio maestro, che io ho amato, che ho conosciuto, che ho confessato : esaudisci soltanto questa mia preghiera.

Colui che ci esorta alla conversione siede già nei cielo; ha già curvato il collo dei Gentili al giogo della fede, ha già confuso la gloria del mondo, già ci annunzia per le rovine di esso così frequenti l'avvicinarsi del giorno del suo rigoroso giudizio: e tuttavia la superba nostra mente non vuole ancora spontaneamente abbandonare ciò che ogni giorno perde involontariamente. Che diremo dunque, fratelli carissimi, il giorno in cui egli ci giudicherà, noi che né coi suoi precetti possiamo essere distaccati dall'amore del secolo presente, né ci correggiamo alle sue percosse?
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Andrea, vedendo la croce, esclamò: O croce ammirabile, o croce desiderabile, o croce che risplendi per tutto l'universo:

Ma forse qualcuno dirà in cuor suo: Che cosa, o quanto lasciarono alla voce del Signore, questi due pescatori che non avevano quasi nulla? Ma in ciò, fratelli carissimi, noi dobbiamo guardare piuttosto all'affetto che al valore. Lascia molto chi non ritiene nulla per sé: lascia molto chi, per quanto poco, lascia tutto. Noi al contrario e siamo attaccati alle cose che possediamo, e col desiderio cerchiamo quelle che non abbiamo. Molto, dunque, lasciarono Pietro e Andrea, quando l'uno e l'altro rinunziarono fin'anche al desiderio di possedere.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Reading 4
The Apostle Andrew was born at Bethsaida, a town of Galilee, and was the brother of Peter. He was a disciple of John the Baptist, and heard him say of Christ, Behold the Lamb of God, John i. 35-37, 40, whereupon he immediately followed Jesus, bringing his brother also with him. Some while after, they were both fishing in the Sea of Galilee, and the Lord Christ, going by, called them both, before any other of the Apostles, in the words, Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men. They made no delay, but left their nets, and followed Him. ~Matth. iv. 18-20. After the death and Resurrection of Christ, Andrew was allotted Scythia as the province of his preaching, and, after labouring there, he went through Epirus and Thrace, where he turned vast multitudes to Christ by his teaching and miracles. Finally he went to Patras in Achaia, and there also he brought many to the knowledge of Gospel truth. Aegeas the Pro-consul resisted the preaching of the Gospel, and the Apostle freely rebuked him, bidding him know that while he held himself a judge of his fellow men, he was himself hindered by devils from knowing Christ our God, the Judge of all.

Whereto Andrew boldly answered that Christ had given Himself up to die for man's salvation; but the Pro-consul blasphemously interrupted him, and bade him look to himself, and sacrifice to the gods. Then said Andrew, We have an altar, whereon day by day I offer up to God, the Almighty, the One, and the True, not the flesh of bulls nor the blood of goats, but a Lamb without spot and when all they that believe have eaten of the Flesh Thereof, the Lamb That was slain abideth whole and liveth. Then Aegeas being filled with wrath, bound the Apostle in prison. Now, the people would have delivered him, but he himself calmed the multitude, and earnestly besought them not to take away from him the crown of martyrdom, for which he longed and which was now drawing near.

Come a short while after, he was brought before the judgment-seat, where he extolled the mystery of the cross, and rebuked Aegeas for his ungodliness. Then Aegeas could bear with him no longer, but commanded him to be crucified, in imitation of Christ. Andrew, then, was led to the place of martyrdom, and, as soon as he came in sight of the cross, he cried out, O precious cross, which the Members of my Lord have made so goodly, how long have I desired thee! how warmly have I loved thee! how constantly have I sought thee! And, now that thou art come to me, how is my soul drawn to thee! Welcome me from among men, and join me again to my Master, that as by thee He redeemed me, so by thee also He may take me unto Himself. So he was fastened to the cross, whereon he hung living for two days, during which time he ceased not to preach the faith of Christ, and, finally, passed into the Presence of Him the likeness of Whose death he had loved so well. All the above particulars of his last sufferings were written by the Priests and Deacons of Achaia, who bear witness to them of their own knowledge. Under the Emperor Constantine the bones of the Apostle were first taken to Constantinople, whence they were afterwards brought to Amalfi. In the Pontificate of Pope Pius II his head was carried to Rome, where it is kept in the Basilica of St. Peter.

Dearly beloved brethren, ye hear how that Peter and Andrew, having once heard the Lord call them, left their nets, and followed their Saviour. As yet they had seen none of His miracles, as yet they had received no promise of their exceeding and eternal reward; nevertheless, at one word of the Lord they forgot all those things which they seemed to have. We have seen many of His miracles; we have received many of His gracious chastenings; many times hath He warned us of the wrath to come and yet Christ calleth and we do not follow.

Perhaps one perchance will ask in his heart, what Peter or Andrew had to lose by obeying the call of the Lord? Dearly beloved brethren, we must consider here rather the intention than the loss incurred by this obedience. He that keepeth nothing for himself, giveth up much; he that sacrificeth his all, sacrificed what is to him a great deal. Beyond doubt, we cling to whatever we have, and what we have least, that we desire most. Peter and Andrew therefore gave up much when they gave up even the desire of possessing anything.
