Dall'Esposizione di san Girolamo Prete sul Profeta Isaia
Libro 4 sul capo II d'Isaia
«Ed uscirà un rampollo dal ceppo di Jesse» Is. 11,1. Fino al principio della visione, o del castigo di Babilonia, che vide Isaia, figlio di Amos, tutta questa profezia si riferisce a Cristo: e noi vogliamo spiegarla partitamente, affinché, proposta e discussa tutta insieme, non confonda la mente del lettore. Il rampollo e il fiore del ceppo di Jesse i Giudei li interpretano per lo stesso Signore: quasi che nel rampollo sia designata la potenza regale e nel fiore la sua bellezza.

Libro 4 sul capo II d'Isaia
«Ed uscirà un rampollo dal ceppo di Jesse» Is. 11,1. Fino al principio della visione, o del castigo di Babilonia, che vide Isaia, figlio di Amos, tutta questa profezia si riferisce a Cristo: e noi vogliamo spiegarla partitamente, affinché, proposta e discussa tutta insieme, non confonda la mente del lettore. Il rampollo e il fiore del ceppo di Jesse i Giudei li interpretano per lo stesso Signore: quasi che nel rampollo sia designata la potenza regale e nel fiore la sua bellezza.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Ecco che verrà il Signore, nostro protettore, il Santo d'Israele,
* Avendo la corona del regno sul suo capo.

Noi però pel rampollo della radice di Jesse intendiamo la santa Vergine Maria, la quale non s'è mai unita a nessun altro pollone, e della quale sopra abbiam letto: «Ecco che una vergine diventerà madre e darà alla luce un figlio» Is. 7,14. Su questo fiore dunque, che per mezzo di Maria spunta all'improvviso dal ceppo e dalla radice di Jesse, riposerà lo Spirito dei Signore: poiché «in esso si compiacque di abitare corporalmente tutta la pienezza della divinità» Coloss. 2,9: e non in parte, come negli altri Santi: ma, come leggono i Nazzareni nel loro Vangelo scritto in lingua Ebraica: Discenderà su di lui tutta la sorgente dello Spirito Santo. Ora il Signore è Spirito; e dove è lo Spirito del Signore, ivi è la libertà.

Alla vista di tanti segni e di tanti miracoli, nessuno poteva scandalizzarsi, ma ognuno restar meravigliato. Eppure la mente degl'infedeli ne riportò grave scandalo, quando lo vide morire dopo tanti miracoli. Onde Paolo dice: «Noi poi predichiamo Cristo crocifisso, scandalo per i Giudei, stoltezza per i Gentili» 1Cor. 1,23. Perché parve stoltezza agli uomini, che l'autore della vita morisse per gli uomini: e l'uomo prese motivo di scandalo in lui, proprio da ciò che doveva eccitarlo a maggior riconoscenza. Poiché tanto più degnamente Dio dev'essere onorato dagli uomini, quanto più indegne cose sostenne per gli uomini.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.
℟. Il Signore uscirà dalla Samaria per la porta che guarda Oriente: e verrà in Betlemme, camminando sulle acque della redenzione di Giuda

E disse ciò non per affermare (l'esattezza della comparazione) ma per negarla. Infatti la canna appena soffi un'auretta, si piega dall'altra parte. E che si designa per la canna, se non l'animo carnale? Il quale, appena è tocco dal favore o dalla disgrazia, si piega subito dall'una o dall'altra parte.

Hence Paul saith: “We preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling-block and unto the Gentiles foolishness.” 1 Cor. i. 23. It is indeed folly in the eyes of men to say that the Author of life died for men and thus men put as a stumbling-block to hinder them from coming to Jesus, the very thing that doth oblige them the most unto Him. For the more humbling God hath undergone for man's sake, the more worthy is He that man should worship Him.

Here our Lord teacheth not by assertion, but by negation. Now a reed is a thing so made that as soon as the wind bloweth upon it, it bendeth it over toward the opposite quarter. And the fleshly-minded man is like a human reed. As he is praised or blamed so he bendeth himself in the one direction or the other.
