Sermone 9 sulla Natività del Signore
La grandezza dell'opera divina eccede, o dilettissimi, e supera grandemente le risorse dell'umana eloquenza: e la difficoltà d'esprimersi nasce proprio là donde sorge la ragione di non tacere. Perché le parole del profeta: «Chi spiegherà la sua generazione?» Is. 53,8 riguardano non solo la divina essenza di Gesù Cristo Figlio di Dio, ma ancora la sua natura umana. Difatti se non si crede per fede che le due nature si sono unite in una sola persona, la parola non riesce a spiegarlo. E perciò non manca mai materia di lode, perché la facondia di chi loda sarà sempre insufficiente.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Beata è Maria Madre di Dio, il cui seno rimane intatto:
* Oggi ella generò il Salvatore del mondo.

Rallegriamoci pertanto di essere impari a parlare di questo grande mistero di misericordia; e se non possiamo penetrare la profondità del mistero della nostra salute, stimiamoci felici di essere vinti dall'immensità di tanto beneficio. Nessuno infatti si avvicina di più alla conoscenza della verità di colui che comprende rimanergli sempre molto da indagare nelle cose divine, anche quando profitta molto. Poiché chi presumesse d'essere giunto là dove tende, non ha già trovato ciò che cercava, sibbene è venuto meno nella sua ricerca.

E affinché non ci turbiamo dei limiti in cui è ristretta la nostra debolezza, ci vengono in soccorso le parole del Vangelo e dei profeti; le quali c'illuminano e istruiscono siffatta-mente da farci considerare la natività del Signore, nella quale il Verbo s'è fatto uomo, non tanto la celebrazione d'una cosa passata, quanto la visione d'un fatto presente. Difatti quello che l'Angelo annunziò ai pastori che vegliavano alla custodia del loro gregge, è risuonato anche alle nostre orecchie e noi siamo ora a capo del gregge del Signore, perché conserviamo nel fondo del cuore le parole che furono pronunziate da parte di Dio; quasi si dicesse ancora nell'odierna festività: «Vi dò una grande notizia che sarà di grande allegrezza a tutto il popolo, cioè che oggi è nato per noi nella città di David, un Salvatore che è Cristo Signore» Luc. 2,10.

Tu vedi che colla nascita del Signore la grazia è stata abbondantemente comunicata a tutti e la profezia fu rifiutata agl'increduli, ma non ai giusti. Ond'ecco Simeone profetizzare il Signore Gesù Cristo essere venuto per la rovina e la risurrezione di molti, per discernere i meriti dei giusti e degli iniqui; e per decretarci secondo la qualità delle nostre opere, egli giudice verace e giusto, o la ricompensa o il supplizio.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Verbo s'è fatto uomo, ed abitò tra noi:

«Per te sarà una spada che ti trapasserà l'anima» Luc. 2,35. Né la scrittura, né la storia ci dicono che Maria sia morta di morte violenta. The words of the Prophet: Who shall declare His generation? Isa. liii. 8 look not only to the Divine, but also to the human birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Faith believeth, but words cannot explain, how the two natures were joined in one Person, and therein we find that we shall never lack matter of praise in Him, Whose abundance ever outrunneth the power of our expression.

We see that God's abounding grace is poured forth on all by the birth of the Lord, and that the gift of prophecy is not denied to the righteous, but to the unbelieving. Simeon prophesieth that our Lord Jesus Christ is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel, setting forth that the just and the unjust reap different fruits from the coming of the Saviour; so will it be with us; according to our individual works will the True and Just Judge apportion to us punishment or reward.

There also in the persecution under the Emperor Aurelian the holy virgin and martyr Columba, who conquered fire and was slain with the sword (third century.)

Psalm 118(33-48) [1]
118:33 (He) Set before me for a law the way of thy justifications, O Lord: * and I will always seek after it.
118:34 Give me understanding, and I will search thy law; * and I will keep it with my whole heart.
118:35 Lead me into the path of thy commandments; * for this same I have desired.
118:36 Incline my heart into thy testimonies * and not to covetousness.
118:37 Turn away my eyes that they may not behold vanity: * quicken me in thy way.
118:38 Establish thy word to thy servant, * in thy fear.
118:39 Turn away my reproach, which I have apprehended: * for thy judgments are delightful.
118:40 Behold I have longed after thy precepts: * quicken me in thy justice.

118:52 I remembered, O Lord, thy judgments of old: * and I was comforted.
118:53 A fainting hath taken hold of me, * because of the wicked that forsake thy law.

118:65 (Teth) Thou hast done well with thy servant, O Lord, * according to thy word.

118:68 Thou art good; * and in thy goodness teach me thy justifications.
118:69 The iniquity of the proud hath been multiplied over me: * but I will seek thy commandments with my whole heart.
