Nam illum póstea quam abscéssit ab óculis hóminum, inquisiérunt et qui óderant, et qui amábant: illi persequéndo, isti habére cupiéndo. In Psalmis ait ipse Dóminus per Prophétam: Périit fuga a me, et non est qui requírat ánimam meam. Et íterum ait álio loco in Psalmo: Confundántur et revereántur requiréntes ánimam meam.

Il Signore disse ai Giudei: «Io me ne vado» Joan. 8,21. Infatti per Cristo Signore la morte fu un ritorno là donde era venuto e che non aveva mai abbandonato. «Io, disse, me ne vado, e voi mi cercherete», non per desiderio, ma per odio. E difatti, dopo che si fu involato agli sguardi degli uomini, egli fu cercato e da quelli che lo odiavano e da quelli che lo amavano : quelli perseguitandolo, questi per desiderio di possederlo. Già nei Salmi lo stesso Signore dice per il Profeta: «È perduto (ogni) scampo per me, e non c'è chi si curi della mia vita» Ps. 141,7 E ancora in altro luogo d'un Salmo: «Siano confusi e svergognati quelli che cercano l'anima mia» Ps. 39,15.
