I farisei lo tentano, le loro insidie sono sventate, e secondo il Salmista: «Frecce di fanciulli son le ferite ch'essi fanno» Ps. 63,8: e nondimeno per rispetto alla dignità del sacerdozio egli esorta il popolo a star soggetto ad essi, non tenendo conto delle opere loro ma dei loro insegnamenti. Col dire poi: «Sulla cattedra di Mosè seggono gli scribi e i farisei» Matth. 23,1, per cattedra egli intende l'insegnamento della legge. Onde anche ciò che si dice in un Salmo: «Né si siede sulla cattedra di pestilenza» Ps. 1,1: e: «Rovesciò i banchi dei venditori di colombi» Marc. 11,15, dobbiamo intenderlo della dottrina.

Guai a noi miserabili, che abbiamo ereditato i vizi dei farisei! Quando il Signore ebbe dato per mezzo di Mosè i comandamenti della legge, vi aggiunse: «Te li legherai alla mano, e li avrai sempre davanti ai tuoi occhi» Deut. 6,8. Il che significa: I miei comandamenti siano nella tua mano per essere messi in pratica: siano dinanzi ai tuoi occhi per meditarli giorno e notte. I farisei interpretando male questo passo, scrivevano il decalogo di Mosè, cioè i dieci comandamenti, su pergamene che si piegavano e si legavano sulla fronte formando sulla loro testa come una corona, per averli così sempre sotto gli occhi.
