Casimiro, figlio di Casimiro, re di Polonia, e di Elisabetta d'Austria, istruito fin dall'infanzia da eccellenti maestri nella pietà e nelle belle arti, domava le giovani membra con aspro cilizio e le debilitava con assidui digiuni. Sdegnando la mollezza d'un letto regale dormiva sulla nuda terra, e se ne usciva segretamente, durante la notte, per implorare prostrato per terra davanti alle porte delle chiese la divina misericordia. Meditava continuamente la passione di Cristo, e soleva assistere alla santa Messa colla mente così elevata in Dio, da sembrare rapito fuor di sé.

Si studiò sommamente di promuovere la fede cattolica, e di abolire lo scisma dei Ruteni; e perciò indusse il padre Casimiro a proibire con una legge agli scismatici di costruire nuovi tempi e di restaurare gli antichi cadenti. Benefico e misericordioso verso i poveri e i disgraziati, egli si acquistò il nome di padre e protettore degl'indigenti. In fin di vita diede coraggiosa prova del suo amore alla verginità, che aveva custodito illibata fin dall'infanzia, allorché, in una grave malattia, risolve fermamente di morire piuttosto che, secondo il parere dei medici, far nulla contro la castità.

Omelia di s. Gregorio papa
Omelia sui Vangeli.
La lettura del santo Vangelo, fratelli carissimi, è chiara. Ma affinché, per la sua stessa semplicità, non sembri a qualcuno troppo elevata, esaminiamola brevemente in modo che la sua esposizione sia chiara per quelli che la ignorano, senza essere gravosa per quelli che la conoscono. Il Signore dice: «Siano cinti i vostri fianchi». Noi cingiamo i fianchi, quando freniamo con la continenza i movimenti della carne. Ma poiché è poco astenersi dal male, se ciascuno non si applica ancora, e con assidui sforzi, a fare il bene, subito si aggiunge: «e le lucerne siano accese nelle vostre mani». Noi teniamo in mano le lucerne accese, quando diamo al nostro prossimo con le buone opere esempi che lo illuminano. A proposito di tali opere il Signore dice: «La vostra luce risplenda davanti agli uomini, affinché essi vedano le vostre opere buone e glorifichino il Padre vostro che è nei cieli».
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:
* egli interceda per i peccati di tutti gli uomini.

Lettura 8
Sono due quindi le cose che vengono comandate: cingere i fianchi e tenere le lucerne: cioè la castità deve risplendere nel nostro corpo e la luce della verità nelle nostre opere. Infatti l'una cosa senza l'altra non può assolutamente essere gradita al nostro Redentore; né colui che compie opere buone, finché non abbandoni le sozzure della lussuria, né colui che eccelle per la sua castità ma non si esercita nelle opere buone. Né la castità dunque è una grande virtù senza le opere buone, né le opere buone possono valere qualcosa senza la castità. Ma anche se si osservano i due comandamenti, rimane il dovere, per chiunque si tratti, di tendere con la speranza alla patria superna e di non star lontano in alcun modo dai vizi soltanto per l'onore di questo mondo.

Considerate che cosa domandi la madre dei figli di Zebedeo insieme coi figli e per i figli: certo è una madre piena di sollecitudine e anche smodata per l'esaltazione dei suoi figli, ma cui si deve perdonare l'estensione dei suoi desideri. È una madre avanzata in età, che compie con cura i suoi doveri religiosi, che resta priva di conforto, perché proprio allora in cui l'età e la forza dei suoi figli le per mettono di contare su loro per il lavoro e la sussistenza, ella acconsente a separarsene, ha sacrificato la propria felicità per assicurare ai figli la ricompensa promessa a coloro che seguono Cristo. Difatti essi appena chiamati dal Signore, abbandonarono (come leggiamo) le reti e il padre, e lo seguirono.

Reading 4
This Casimir was the son of Casimir III, King of Poland, by Elizabeth of Austria, his wife, and was born upon the 3rd day of October, in the year 1458. From his childhood he was taught by the best masters, and was trained in all godliness and good learning. While he was still a boy he wore rough haircloth, and chastened himself with much fasting. He forsook the softness of his princely bed, and lay upon the hard ground, and on stormy nights he would go out secretly and prostrate himself before the doors of the churches, crying to God for mercy. He was unwearied in contemplating the Passion of Christ, and when he was present at Mass, so profound was his recollection, that he seemed to be altogether beside himself.

℟. The Lord made him honourable, and defended him from his enemies, and kept him safe from those that lay in wait for him;

Reading 5
He made the propagation of the Catholic faith one of the chief works of his life, and strove hard against the schism in Ruthenia. He persuaded his father to forbid by law that the schismatics should build any new churches, or repair the existing ones when they fell into decay. So great was his liberality and tenderness toward the needy and the afflicted, that he came to be called the father and guardian of the poor. From his infancy he never soiled his purity, and in his last illness, when his physicians advised him to seek for relief from his grievous sufferings by the sacrifice of his chastity, he cheerfully determined rather to die.

Being made perfect in a short space, and full of piety and good works, he foretold the day of his own death, and, gathering round him a choir of priests and monks, he rendered his soul into the hands of God Whom they were praising, ~upon the 4th day of March, in the year of our Lord 1482, and the 25th of his own age. His body was carried to Wilna, where many miracles are reputed to have been wrought around it. At his grave a dead girl is said to have received her life again, blind men their sight, cripples the power of walking, and many sick folk health. Moreover, on an occasion when the Lithuanians in scanty numbers were exposed to the shock of a powerful enemy, they believed that he appeared in the air, and gave them the signal victory which they won. On the assurance of these things, Leo X. was moved to add his name to those of the Saints.

Dearly beloved brethren, the words of the Holy Gospel, which have just been read, lie open before you, and, lest their very plainness should make them seem to some to be hard, we will go through them with such shortness as that neither may they which understand not remain unenlightened, nor they which understand be wearied. The Lord saith Let your loins be girded about. Now, we gird our loins about, when by continency we master the lustful inclination of the flesh. But, forasmuch as it sufficeth not for a man to abstain from evil deeds, if he strive not to join thereto the earnest doing of good works, it is immediately added And your lights burning. Our lights burn when, by good works, we give bright example to our neighbour; concerning which works the Lord saith Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father Which is in heaven. Matth. v. 16.

She was a mother who, albeit stricken in years and comfortless, at an age when she had sore need of the strength of her offspring to help and keep her, was yet so earnest in godliness and motherly love, that she had liefer suffer the loss of her sons, that they might gain the reward of following Christ still, as we read they had already done, when, at the first call of the Lord, they left their nets and their father, iv. 21, 22.

In Antiochia il natale di san Foca Martire. Dopo molte ingiurie sofferte per il nome del Redentore, trionfò felicemente dell'antico serpente. Ciò è confermato ancora oggi ai popoli con questo miracolo, che, se alcuno è morso da un serpente, appena tocca con fede la porta della Basilica del Martire, subito, resa vana la forza del veleno, viene risanato.
A Cesarèa, in Palestina, sant'Adriano Martire, il quale nella persecuzione dell'Imperatore Diocleziano, per ordine del Preside Firmiliàno, esposto prima ad un leone per la fede di Cristo, poi trafitto alla gola con la spada, ricevette la corona del martirio.
Nello stesso giorno la passione dei santi Eusébio Palatino ed altri nove Martiri.
A Cesarèa, in Palestina, san Teófilo Vescovo, il quale sotto il Principe Sevèro risplendette chiarissimo per dottrina e per integrità di vita.
