Perpetua e Felicita furono arrestate in Africa insieme con Revocato, Saturnino e Secundolo nella persecuzione dell'imperatore Severo, e rinchiuse in un carcere tenebroso; cui poi si aggiunse Satiro. Erano ancor catecumene, ma furono battezzate poco dopo. Passati pochi giorni, dal carcere furono, insieme coi compagni, condotte al foro, e dopo una gloriosa confessione furono dal procuratore Ilarione condannate alle fiere. Quindi giulive ritornarono nel carcere, dove vennero confortate con varie apparizioni ed infiammate alla palma del martirio. Né le preghiere reiterate né le lacrime del vecchio padre, né l'amore materno verso il suo bambino ancora lattante, né l'atrocità del supplizio poterono smuovere mai Perpetua dalla fede di Cristo.

In ultimo vengono finite di spada insieme coi compagni, ch'erano stati straziati da varie bestie, Il sommo Pontefice Pio X innalzò la festa di queste sante Martiri a rito doppio per tutta la Chiesa e ordinò che si fissasse al 6 di Marzo.

Il regno dei cieli, fratelli carissimi, si dice simile a cose terrene, affinché l'anima si elevi da ciò che conosce a ciò che non conosce affatto, così che dall'esempio delle cose visibili si sollevi alle invisibili, e come incitata da ciò che ha appreso, s'infiammi a tal punto da imparare ad amare, per mezzo dell'affetto per un bene conosciuto, anche beni sconosciuti. Ecco dunque che il regno dei cieli si paragona ad un tesoro nascosto in un campo. L uomo che l'ha trovato, lo tiene nascosto e, per la gioia di possederlo, va a vendere tutto ciò che possiede e compra quel campo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Apre la sua bocca alla sapienza e la legge della bontà è sulla sua lingua. Sorveglia l'andamento della sua casa

Ed in ciò si deve anche notare che il tesoro trovato viene nascosto perché sia conservato: poiché non riuscirà a difendere dagli spiriti maligni l'ardore del desiderio che sente per il cielo, colui che non lo sottrae alle umane lodi. Infatti nella vita presente ci troviamo come in una via, lungo la quale ci dirigiamo alla patria. Gli spiriti maligni ci tendono insidie lungo la strada, come ladruncoli. Portare dunque pubblicamente un tesoro per via è come desiderare di essere derubati. Ora io dico questo, non perché il prossimo non veda le nostre opere buone, poiché sta scritto: «Vedano le vostre opere buone e glorifichino il Padre vostro che è nei cieli»; ma perché non cerchiamo lodi dall'esterno per quello che facciamo. L'opera quindi sia pure pubblica, ma rimanga occulta l'intenzione; affinché noi possiamo dare al prossimo l'esempio di un'opera buona, e tuttavia con l'intenzione, per la quale cerchiamo di piacere soltanto a Dio, desideriamo sempre il segreto.

Libr. 9 al cap. 20 di Luca
Molti fanno derivare da questa denominazione di vigna vari sensi: ma Isaia ha esposto chiaramente la vigna del Signore degli eserciti essere la casa d'Israele. Chi è che fondò questa vigna se non Iddio? È lui dunque che la diede a lavorare a dei coloni, ed egli poi se n'andò via: non già che il Signore se ne sia andato da un luogo ad un altro, essendo egli sempre presente dovunque: ma perché egli è assai vicino a quelli che lavorano con diligenza, mentre è lontano dai negligenti. Egli rimase assente per molto tempo, affinché non sembrasse che reclamasse i frutti troppo presto. Così la ostinazione (dei coloni nel loro cattivo volere) è tanto più inescusabile, quanto più la bontà (del padrone) s'è mostrata indulgente.

Perpetua and Felicity were arrested during the persecution of the emperor Severus in Africa, together with Revocatus, Saturninus and Secundulus, and were cast into a dark dungeon, where Satyrus was added to their company. They were as yet catechumens but shortly afterwards they were baptized. After a few days they and their companions were led forth from prison to the court, and, after a glorious profession of faith, were condemned by the procurator Hilarion to the beasts. Thereupon they went down to the prison rejoicing, and there they were refreshed with many visions, and fired with longing for the martyr's palm. Neither the repeated prayers and tears of Perpetua's father, a man of extreme old age, nor her motherly love for her baby son still at the breast, nor the atrocity of the torture, could shake her faith in Christ.

Dearly beloved brethren, the kingdom of heaven is likened unto the things of earth, to the end that by the mean of things which we know, our mind may rise to the contemplation of the things which we know not by the example of things which are seen, may fix her gaze on things which are not seen by the touch of things which she useth, may be warmed towards the things which she useth not; by things which she knoweth and loveth, to love also the things which she knoweth not. For, behold, “the kingdom of heaven is likened unto treasure hid in a field, the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and, for joy thereof, goeth and selleth all that he hath and buyeth that field.”
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. She openeth her mouth with wisdom, and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household

And herein we must remark that the treasure, when once it hath been found, is hidden to keep it safe. He whose intimate yearnings after God are not hidden from the praise of men, is open thereby to the attacks of evil spirits. In this life we are, as it were, journeying homewards on a road beset by evil spirits who are like highwaymen. He therefore inviteth robbery who carrieth his treasure ostentatiously. Doubtless our neighbour should be able to see our good works, as it is written: “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” But this is not to be understood to mean that we are to seek the praise of men by what we do. Rather, let us in such wise work in the open that the inner intention of devotion is not advertised. So we shall give an example to our neighbour, and yet keep hidden, except from the sight of God, our purpose of pleasing him.

Many derive diverse spiritual meanings from the term vineyard, but Isaias giveth us to know that the vineyard of the Lord of Sabaoth is the house of Israel. v. 7. Who but God planted that vineyard? He it was that let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country; not that the Lord, Who is everywhere present, moveth from place to place; but because He is nigh unto them that seek Him, and from such as regard Him not He standeth afar off. For a long time He tarried away, lest He might seem to ask too early for the fruits of His vineyard. For where kindness is greatest, there ingratitude is worst.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Martirologio {anticipated}

Nel Monastero di Fossanóva, presso Terracina, nella Campania, san Tommaso d'Aquino, Confessore e Dottore della Chiesa, dell'Ordine dei Predicatori, assai illustre per la nobiltà del sangue, per la santità della vita e per la scienza della Teologia, dal Papa Leone decimoterzo dichiarato celeste Patrono di tutte le Scuole cattoliche.
A Cartagine il natale delle sante Perpètua e Felicita Martiri: di esse. Felicita, essendo gravida (come racconta sant'Agostino) e aspettandosi, secondo le leggi, che partorisse, nei dolori del parto si lamentava, ma gettata alle fiere era lieta. Con esse patirono il martirio anche Sàtiro, Saturnino, Revocato e Secóndolo, l'ultimo dei quali morì in carcere, e tutti gli altri furono maltrattati da varie fiere, ed infine uccisi a colpi di spada sotto il Principe Sevèro. Ma la festa delle sante Perpètua e Felicita si celebra nel giorno precedente.
A Cesarèa, nella Palestina, la passione di sant'Eùbolo, che fu compagno di sant'Adriano, e, due giorni dopo di lui, sbranato dai leoni e trapassato da spada, ultimo di tutti in quella città ricevette la corona del martirio.
A Nicomèdia san Teófilo Vescovo, che mandato in esilio per il culto delle sante immagini, ivi finì la vita.
A Pelùsio, nell'Egitto, san Pàolo Vescovo, che per la medesima causa morì in esilio.
A Brèscia san Gaudióso, Vescovo e Confessore.
Nella Tebàide san Pàolo, soprannominato il Semplice.

In the monastery of Fossa Nuova, near Terracina, the holy Confessor Thomas of Aquino, [in the year 1274,] of the Order of Friars Preachers, Doctor of the Church, illustrious for the nobility of his birth, the holiness of his life, and the depth of his knowledge of theology. Leo XIII declared him the patron in heaven of all Catholic schools.
At Tuburbe, in Morocco, under the Emperor Severus, the holy martyrs Perpetua and Felicitas. Felicitas was with child, and therefore was respited, in accordance with the law, until after she was delivered. Holy Augustine saith that when she was in travail she had sorrow, but when she was set before the wild beasts she rejoiced. There suffered along with them Revocatus, Saturninus, and Secundolus, of whom the last died in prison, but the others were all killed by beasts.
At Caesarea, in Palestine, the holy martyr Eubulus. He was a Companion of holy Hadrian, and two days after him was mangled by the lions and then despatched with the sword, being the last of all those who received the crown of martyrdom in that city, [in the year 308.]
At Nicomedia, holy Theophilus, Bishop of that see, who for his honouring of holy images was sent into exile and there died, [in the year 845.]
