Libro 8 Comm. al cap. 15 di Luca, dopo il principio
Vedi, che il patrimonio divino si dà a quelli che lo domandano. Non pensare che il padre abbia commesso colpa dando porzione dei suoi beni al figlio più giovane. Ogni età è atta al regno di Dio: e la fede non dipende dagli anni. Certo questo giovane che domandò la sua parte, si giudicò capace di conservarla. E volesse Dio che non si fosse allontanato dal padre, egli non avrebbe conosciuto le difficoltà che incontrò la sua giovinezza. Ma dopo che, abbandonata la casa paterna, se ne fu andato lontano, cominciò a soffrir miseria. Si ha ragione dunque di dire che sperpera il suo patrimonio chi si allontana dalla Chiesa.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Padre, ho peccato contro il cielo e contro di te: non merito più di esser chiamato tuo figlio:
* Trattami come uno dei tuoi garzoni.

Lettura 2
«Se ne andò in un paese lontano» Luc. 15,13. Quale allontanamento maggiore da sé, che degradarsi; essere separato (dai giusti) non da frontiere ma dai costumi: essere diviso non dai continenti, ma dagli affetti; essere in disunione coi Santi, perché la febbre dei piaceri del mondo si frappone, per così dire, tra essi e noi? Difatti chi si separa da Cristo, è esiliato dalla patria celeste, e diviene cittadino del mondo. «Ma noi non siamo forestieri e pellegrini, sibbene siamo concittadini dei Santi e della famiglia di Dio» Ephes. 2,19. «E benché un tempo lontani, ci siamo riavvicinati per il sangue di Cristo» Ephes. 2,13. Non invidiamo chi ritorna da un paese lontano: perché anche noi siamo stati in un paese lontano, come insegna Isaia. Infatti vi trovi così: «Per quelli che sedevano nella regione delle tenebre della morte s'è levata una luce» Is. 9,2. Questa regione lontana è dunque la tenebra della morte.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Ma noi che abbiamo davanti agli occhi Cristo Signore, ch'è come l'anima della nostra anima, viviamo all'ombra di Cristo. E perciò la Chiesa canta: «All'ombra di lui ch'è il mio desiderio, io m'assisi» Cant. 2,3. Egli dunque menando vita dissoluta, perdé la grazia, ch'è tutto l'ornamento della nostra natura. Perciò tu che hai impressa l'immagine di Dio, e che hai la sua somiglianza, non volerla distruggere colla lordura del peccato indegna d'una creatura ragionevole. Sei opera di Dio: non voler dire a un pezzo di legno: Tu sei mio padre, per non divenire simile al legno (degli idoli), essendo scritto: «Diventino simili ad essi quelli che li fanno» Ps. 113,8.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Lettura 4
Il beatissimo Tommaso, l'insigne ornamento del mondo cristiano e il luminare della Chiesa, nacque da Landolfo conte d'Aquino e da Teodora di Napoli, di nobil lignaggio, e ancor bambino diede un segno della tenera devozione che avrebbe poi portato alla Madre di Dio. Avendo trovata una carta su cui era scritta la salutazione Angelica, la ritenne stretta in mano, nonostante gli sforzi della nutrice, e quando la madre gliela strappò a forza, la reclamò con pianti e con gesti e, appena riavutala, la inghiottì. All'età di cinque anni, fu affidato alle cure dei monaci Benedettini di Monte Cassino. Di là mandato a Napoli per gli studi, appena adolescente entrò nell'ordine dei frati Predicatori. Ma e la madre e i fratelli restandone fortemente sdegnati, è mandato a Parigi. Per via i fratelli se ne Impadroniscono colla forza e lo conducono nel castello di san Giovanni di Aree: dove vessato in più modi per fargli cambiar risoluzione, gl'introdussero finanche una donna per scuotere la sua costanza, ma egli la mise in fuga con un tizzone. Tosto il beato giovane, inginocchiatosi in preghiera davanti all'immagine della croce ed essendosi addormentato, gli parve di sentire in sogno degli Angeli stringergli le reni; e da quel tempo in poi fu esente da ogni senso di libidine. Persuase le sorelle, ch'erano venute nel castello per smuoverlo dal pio disegno, a liberarsi dalle cure del secolo e a consacrarsi agli esercizi d'una vita celeste.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano

Fatto uscire dal castello per una finestra, è ricondotto a Napoli; donde fra Giovanni Teutonico, maestro generale dell'ordine dei Predicatori lo conduce prima a Roma e poi a Parigi, dove studiò filosofia e teologia sotto Alberto Magno. A venticinque anni è dichiarato maestro, e spiega pubblicamente col più gran successo gli scritti dei filosofi e teologi. Non si mise mai a studiare o a comporre, se non dopo aver pregato. Nei passi difficili della sacra Scrittura, alla preghiera aggiungeva il digiuno. Anzi soleva dire al suo confratello Reginaldo, che quanto sapeva averlo acquistato non tanto col suo studio o lavoro, quanto averlo appreso per ispirazione divina. Pregando con più ardore a Napoli davanti all'immagine del Crocifisso, udì questa voce: Hai scritto bene di me, Tommaso; qual ricompensa ne vuoi avere? Ed egli a lui: Non altra, Signore, che te stesso. Leggeva assiduamente le Collazioni dei Padri; e non c'era genere di scrittore che egli non avesse studiato con diligenza. I suoi scritti e per il numero, e per la varietà, e per la facilità onde vi sono spiegate le cose difficili sono sì eccellenti, che la sua dottrina fecondissima, esente da ogni errore e meravigliosamente d'accordo colle verità rivelate, è efficacissima a combattere vittoriosamente gli errori d'ogni tempo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,

Lettura 6
Chiamato a Roma dal somme Pontefice Urbano IV, compose dietro suo ordine l'Ufficio ecclesiastico che si recita nella solennità del Corpus Domini: ma ricusò gli onori che gli offrì ed anche l'arcivescovado di Napoli propostogli da Clemente IV. Non cessava d'annunziare la parola di Dio; e nel farlo durante l'ottava di Pasqua nella basilica di san Pietro, una donna toccando il lembo della sua veste, rimase libera dalla perdita di sangue. Mandato dal beato Gregario X al concilio di Lione, cadde malato nel monastero di Fossanova, dove, infermo, commentò il Cantico dei cantici. E là morì cinquantenne, l'anno della salute 1274, il 7 di Marzo. Dei miracoli lo resero illustre anche dopo morte; e dopo essere stati approvati, Giovanni XXII l'iscrisse nell'albo dei Santi nell'anno 1323, e più tardi il suo corpo fu trasportato a Tolosa per ordine del beato Urbano V. Paragonato ai santi spiriti angelici non meno per l'innocenza che per l'ingegno, ottenne giustamente il titolo di Dottore Angelico, confermatogli dall'autorità di san Pio V. Leone poi XIII, accogliendo favorevolmente le suppliche e i voti di quasi tutti i vescovi dell'orbe cattolico, per combattere soprattutto la peste di tanti sistemi filosofici che si allontanano dalla verità, per il progresso delle scienze e la comune utilità del genere umano, con decreto della sacra Congregazione dei Riti, lo dichiarò e stabili mediante lettere apostoliche celeste patrono di tutte le scuole cattoliche.

Il Signore mostra che si devono ritenere insipidi coloro che, agognando l'abbondanza e temendo la scarsezza dei beni del tempo, perdono i beni dell'eternità che non possono esser dati né tolti dagli uomini. Quindi: Se il sale diventasse scipito, con che cosa lo si potrà render salato? Vale a dire se voi, mediante i quali si devono condire, per così dire, i popoli, per timore delle persecuzioni nel tempo perderete il regno dei cieli, quali saranno gli uomini, mediante i quali si elimini da voi l'errore, dato che il Signore vi ha scelti per eliminare l'errore degli altri?
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:

Quindi: Non serve a nulla il sale scipito, se non per essere gettato fuori e calpestato dagli uomini. Quindi non è calpestato dagli uomini chi soffre la persecuzione, ma chi diventa scipito perché teme la persecuzione. Difatti non si può calpestare se non chi è sotto, ma non è sotto colui che, pur subendo molti dolori in terra, col cuore è tuttavia rivolto al cielo.

Voi siete la luce del mondo Mt 5, 14. Come prima ha detto: sale della terra, così ora dice: luce del mondo. Difatti neanche prima per terra si deve intendere quella che calpestiamo con i piedi, ma gli uomini che vivono sulla terra, o anche i peccatori, perché il Signore ha inviato il sale apostolico per condirli e impedirne la putrefazione. E qui per mondo è opportuno intendere non il cielo e la terra, ma gli uomini che sono nel mondo o amano il mondo, perché gli apostoli sono stati inviati a illuminarli. Non può rimanere nascosta una città collocata sul monte, cioè fondata su una insigne e grande onestà, simboleggiata anche dal monte in cui il Signore sta insegnando.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Reading 4
That splendid adornment of the Christian world and light of the Church, blessed Thomas of Aquino, was the son of Landulph, Earl of Aquino, and Theodora of Naples, his wife, being nobly descended on both sides. He was born in the year of salvation 1226, and even as an infant gave token of the love which he afterwards bore to the Mother of God. He found a little bit of paper upon which was written the Angelic Salutation, and held it firm in his hand in spite of the efforts of his wet-nurse; his mother took it away by force, but he cried and stretched out for it, and when she gave it back to him, he swallowed it. When he was only four years old, he was given into the keeping of the Benedictine monks of Monte Cassino. He was thence sent to Naples to study, and there, while very young, entered the Order of Friars Preachers. This displeased his mother and brothers, and he left Naples for Paris. When he was on his journey his brothers met him, and carried him off by force to the castle of Monte San Giovanni, where they imprisoned him in the keep. Here they used every means to break him of his intention, and at last brought a woman into his room to try to overcome his purity. The lad drove her out with a fire-brand. When he was alone he knelt down before the figure of the Cross, and there he fell asleep. As he slept, it seemed to him that angels came and girded his loins and from this time he never felt the least sexual inclination. His sisters came to the castle to beseech him to give up his purpose of leaving the world, but he so worked on them by his godly exhortations, that both of them ever after set no value on earthly things, and busied themselves rather with heavenly.

℟. The Lord made him honourable, and defended him from his enemies, and kept him safe from those that lay in wait for him;

Being let down from a window, Thomas escaped out of the castle of Monte San Giovanni, and returned to Naples. Thence he went first to Rome, and then to Paris, in company of Brother John the German, then Master-General of the Friars Preachers. At Paris he studied Philosophy and Theology under Albert the Great Doctor. At the age of twenty-five years he took the degree of Master, and gave public disquisitions on the Philosophers and Theologians with great distinction. He never set himself to read or write till he had first prayed, and when he was about to take in hand a hard passage of the Holy Scriptures, he fasted also. Hence he was wont to say to Brother Reginald his comrade, that whatever he knew, he had learnt, not so much from his own labour and study, as from the inspiration of God. At Naples he was once kneeling in very earnest prayer before an image of Christ Crucified, when he heard a voice which said Thomas, thou hast written well of Me what reward wilt thou that I give thee? He answered: Lord, thyself. He studied most carefully the works of the Fathers, and there was no kind of author in which he was not well read. His own writings are so wonderful, both because of their number, their variety, and the clearness of his explanations of hard things, that his rich and pure teaching, marvellously consonant with revealed truth, is an admirable antidote for the errors of all times.

Reading 6
The Supreme Pontiff Urban IV. sent for him to Rome, and at his command he composed the Church Office for the feast of Corpus Christi. The Pope could not persuade him to accept any dignity. Pope Clement IV. also offered him the Archbishopric of Naples, but he refused it. He did not neglect the preaching of the Word of God. Once while he was giving a course of sermons in the Basilica of St Peter, during the octave of Easter, a woman who had an issue of blood was healed by touching the hem of his garment. He was sent by blessed Gregory X. to the Council of Lyons, but fell sick on his way to the Abbey of Fossa Nuovo, and there during his illness he made an exposition of the Song of Songs. There he died on the 7th day of March, in the year of salvation 1274, aged fifty years. He was distinguished for miracles even after his death, and on proof of these Pope John XXII. added his name to those of the Saints in the year 1323. His body was afterwards carried to Toulouse by command of blessed Urban V. He has been compared to an angel, both on account of his innocency and of his intellectual power, and has hence been deservedly termed the Angelic Doctor. The use of which title as applied to him was approved by the authority of holy Pius V. Leo XIII. cheerfully agreeing to the prayers and wishes of nearly all the bishops of the Catholic world, and in conformity with a vote of the Congregation of Sacred Rites, by his Apostolic letters declared and recognized Thomas of Aquino as the patron in heaven of all Catholic schools, as an antidote to the plague of so many false systems, especially of philosophy, for the increase of scientific knowledge, and for the common good of all mankind.

A Granata, nella Spagna, san Giovanni di Dio, Confessore, Fondatore dell'Ordine dei Fratelli Ospedalieri degli infermi, rimasto celebre per la misericordia verso i poveri e per il disprezzo di se stesso: dal Papa Leone decimoterzo fu proclamato Patrono celeste di tutti gli ospedali ed infermi.
A Nicomèdia san Quintilio, Vescovo e Martire.
In Africa i santi Martiri Cirillo Vescovo, Rogato, Felice, un altro Rogàto, Beata, Erènia, Felicita, Urbàno, Silvàno e Marmilo.
Presso Antinoo, città dell'Egitto, il natale dei santi Martiri Apollonio Diacono e Filèmone, i quali, presi e condotti avanti al Giudice, avendo costantemente ricusato di sacrificare agli idoli, forate loro le calcagna, furono ambedue orribilmente trascinati per la città, e da ultimo, percossi con la spada, compirono il loro martirio.
Nello stesso luogo la passione dei santi Ariano Preside, Teòrico ed altri tre, i quali dal Giudice furono fatti affogare nel mare, ma i loro corpi dai delfini furono riportati al lido.
A Cartagine san Ponzio, Diacono del beato Cipriàno Vescovo : sostenne con lui l'esilio fino al giorno della sua morte; lasciò scritto un bel volume sulla vita e sul martirio di lui, e, nei suoi patimenti glorificando sempre il Signore, meritò la corona della vita.
