3 Or Israele amava Giuseppe più di tutti i suoi figli, perché l'aveva avuto nella vecchiaia: e gli aveva fatto una veste di vari colori.
4 Ma i suoi fratelli vedendo ch'era amato dal padre più di tutti gli altri figli, l'odiavano e non potevano parlargli pacificamente.
5 Avvenne ancora ch'egli raccontò ai suoi fratelli un sogno che aveva veduto: il che fu un semenzaio di odio maggiore.
6 Disse dunque loro: Udite il sogno che ho visto:

Dal libro di sant'Ambrogio Vescovo sul santo Giuseppe

La vita dei Santi è una regola di vita pel resto degli uomini. Perciò troviamo nella Scrittura una serie di racconti dettagliati : affinché leggendoli impariamo a conoscere Abramo, Isacco, Giacobbe e gli altri giusti, e possiamo percorrere, camminando sulle loro tracce, il sentiero dell'innocenza segnato dalla loro virtù. Io ho già trattato frequentemente di essi, e oggi si offre alla nostra attenzione la storia del santo Giuseppe: il quale se ebbe moltissime virtù, rifulse principalmente per la sua insigne castità. Pertanto è giusto che dopo aver riconosciuto in Abramo l'eroico ossequio alla fede, in Isacco la purezza d'un animo sincero, in Giacobbe un coraggio singolare e una grande pazienza nelle traversie, voi passiate da questa idea generale delle virtù ad osservarne attentamente i caratteri particolari.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Vedendo Giacobbe la veste di Giuseppe, si stracciò le vesti piangendo, e disse:

Il santo Giuseppe ci sia dunque proposto come specchio di castità. La purezza splende nei suoi costumi, nei suoi atti, insieme allo splendore d'una certa grazia ch'è la compagna della castità. Onde anche i genitori l'amavano più degli altri figli. Ma ciò fu causa d'invidia: il che non devesi tacere: perché essa fu l'origine dei fatti che formano il seguito della storia di Giuseppe: e perché insieme impariamo che un uomo perfetto non si lascia trasportare mai dal desiderio di vendicare l'offesa, o di rendere male per male. Onde Davide dice: «Se ho reso male a chi me ne faceva».

In che Giuseppe avrebbe meritato d'esser preferito agli altri, s'egli avesse offeso quelli che l'offendevano, o se non avesse amato che coloro che l'amavano? Questo lo fanno molti. Ma ciò ch'è mirabile si è di amare il proprio nemico, come insegna il Salvatore. Giuseppe è dunque veramente degno d'ammirazione perché perdonando i suoi offensori, dimenticando l'ingiuria fattagli, non prendendo vendetta di coloro che l'avevano venduto, ma rendendo benefìci per l'oltraggio, egli praticò prima del Vangelo un precetto che dopo il Vangelo noi lo apprendiamo tutti senza poterlo osservare. Sappiamo dunque che i Santi han dovuto sopportare la gelosia, affinché ne imitiamo la pazienza: e riconosciamo ch'essi non furono d'una natura più eccellente della nostra, ma più osservante (dei doveri): e che non ignorarono le cattive tendenze, ma si corressero dei loro difetti. Che se la fiamma dell'invidia ha toccato anche i Santi, quanto più si deve badare che non bruci i peccatori?

℟. Ricordati di me quando ti troverai bene:

Libr. 4 cap. 48 al cap. 11 di Luca
Questo indemoniato da Matteo ci viene presentato non solo muto, ma anche cieco: e si dice che il Signore lo guarì in modo che ricuperò la parola e la vista. Tre miracoli furono dunque operati insieme in un sol uomo: cieco vede, muto parla, posseduto dal demonio ne viene liberato. Ciò che avvenne allora non ebbe, è vero, che effetti corporali, ma un fatto analogo si compie (invisibilmente) ogni giorno nella conversione di (quelli che diventano) credenti: prima viene scacciato il demonio dalla loro anima, scorgono la luce della fede; e poi la loro bocca, muta fino allora, s'apre per lodare Dio. Ma alcuni di loro dicevano: « Egli scaccia i demoni per l'aiuto di Beelzebub, principe dei demoni» Luc. 11,16. Quelli che lo calunniavano così non erano del popolo, ma dei farisei e degli scribi, come l'attestano gli altri Evangelisti.

La folla del popolo, ch'era più semplice, ammirava sempre i miracoli del Signore; mentre quelli o si sforzavano di negarli, o, se non potevano negarli, di alterarli con una spiegazione sfavorevole, come se questi miracoli fossero stati l'opera non della divinità, ma dello spirito immondo. «E altri, per metterlo alla prova, gli chiedevano un segno dal cielo» Luc. 11,16. Essi desideravano che facesse discendere il fuoco dal cielo alla maniera d'Elia, ovvero che, per un prodigio simile a quello di Samuele, a un tratto in un bel giorno d'estate, rumoreggiassero i tuoni, balenassero i fulmini, scrosciasse la pioggia: come se non avessero potuto ricorrere ancora alle loro calunnie ordinarie, e attribuire questi fatti a cause occulte, e alle diverse perturbazioni atmosferiche. E tu che snaturi ciò che vedi coi tuoi occhi, ciò che tocchi con mano, ciò che sperimenti utile, che faresti de' prodigi che ti venissero dal cielo? Tu non mancheresti di rispondere, che anche i maghi in Egitto hanno fatto molti prodigi nell'aria.

℟. Disse Ruben ai suoi fratelli: Non ve lo dissi forse: Non vogliate peccare contro il fanciullo, e voi non mi deste retta?

Egli non rispose alle loro parole, ma ai pensieri: perché almeno così fossero obbligati a credere alla potenza di lui, che vedeva i segreti del loro cuore. Ch. 1
The lives of the saints are the models for the lives of others. This is one of the reasons why we have been given the wise tale of the Scriptures, that while, by reading therein, we come to know Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and others of the righteous, we may follow them in that path of innocency which is opened to us for our imitation by the record of their godly conversation. Of them I have often treated, and today the story of the holy Joseph cometh before me. In that story there are patterns of many virtues, but chiefly is he glorious on account of his clean living. Right is it then that ye who have learnt in Abraham the devotedness of a faith that nothing could daunt, in Isaac the transparency of an upright soul, in Jacob a wonderful patience of spirit in great travails, should now turn from their worthy deeds, to see the bright example of Joseph's self-control.

℟. When Jacob saw Joseph's coat he rent his clothes, and mourned; and he said:

The holy Joseph is put before us as a pattern of chastity. Modesty shineth in his manners and in his deeds, and a certain loveliness, which is found with chastity, shineth there also. Hence his parents loved him more than their other children. But this love caused him to be the object of an envy, which we must needs not pass by, and upon this the whole story turneth. Yet, at the same time, we learn how that just man was not swayed by any desire to avenge his own sufferings, neither repaid evil for evil. Whence also David saith: If I have rewarded evil Ps. vii. 5.

In what would Joseph have been worthy to be chosen before others, if he had harmed them which harmed him, and loved them which loved him? For this do many do. But it is a wonder if one do that which the Saviour teacheth, and love his enemy. Well, then, may we wonder at him who did this before the Gospel came; who, being injured, spared; being assailed, forgave; being sold, returned no evil; but repaid insult with favour. We, from the Gospel, have been taught to do all this, and we cannot. Let us also, then, learn how that there was envy even among some of the holy (Patriarchs), that we may follow the example of the patience (wherewith others of them bore it;) and let us feel that they were not men of another and higher nature than ours, but only more heedful; that they were not sinless, but that they repented. But if the passion of envy scorched even some of the holy race, how much more need is there for the sinful to take heed lest it set fire to them?

We read in Matthew xii. 22 that the devil, by which this poor creature was possessed, was not only dumb, but also blind; and that, when he was healed by the Lord, he saw as well as spake. Three miracles, therefore, were performed on this one man; the blind saw, the dumb spake, and the possessed was delivered. This mighty work was then indeed wrought carnally, but it is still wrought spiritually in the conversion of believers, when the devil is cast out of them, so that their eyes see the light of faith, and the lips, that before were dumb, are opened that their mouth may show forth the praise of God. But some of them said: He casteth out devils through Beelzebub, the chief of the devils. These some were not of the multitude, but liars among the Pharisees and Scribes, as we are told by the other Evangelist.

They would have had Christ either to call down fire from heaven like Elias, 4 Kings i. 10, or, like Samuel, 1 Kings vii. 10, to have made thunder roll, and lightning flash, and rain fall at midsummer. And yet and if he had so done, they had been still able to explain away these signs also, as being the natural result of some unusual, though, till that moment, unremarked state of the atmosphere. O thou, who stubbornly deniest that which thine eye seeth, thine hand holdeth, and thy sense perceiveth, what wilt thou say to a sign from heaven? In good sooth, thou wilt say that the magicians in Egypt also wrought diverse signs from heaven. Ex. vii., viii.

A Roma santa Francésca Vedova, celebre per la nobiltà del sangue, per la santità della vita e per il dono dei miracoli.
Presso Sebaste, in Arménia, il natale di quaranta santi soldati di Cappadócia, i quali, al tempo dell'Imperatore Licinio, sotto il Preside Agricolào, dopo ceppi ed orride carceri, dopo avere avuto la faccia percossa con sassi, nel rigidissimo inverno furono obbligati a passare nudi la notte a cielo scoperto in uno stagno gelato, dove i loro corpi gelati scoppiavano, e finalmente collo spezzamento delle gambe compirono il martirio. Fra essi i più illustri furono Cirióne e Càndido. Di tutti san Basilio ed altri Padri cogli scritti celebrarono le splendide glorie. La loro festa però si celebra nel giorno seguente.
A Nissa la deposizione di san Gregorio Vescovo, figlio dei santi Basilio ed Emmélia, e fratello dei santi Basilio Magno e Pietro di Sebàste Vescovi, e di Macrina Vergine. Illustre per santità e dottrina, per aver difeso la fede cattolica, fu scacciato dalla sua città sotto l'Ariano Imperatore Valènte.
A Barcellona, in Spagna, san Baciano Vescovo, celebre tanto per la vita che per la sua eloquenza, il quale finì la vita nell'estrema vecchiezza al tempo del Principe Teodosio.
A Bologna santa Caterina Vergine, del Second'Ordine di san Francèsco, illustre per santità di vita. Il suo corpo è ivi venerato con grande onore.

At Rome, the holy widow Frances, famous for her nobleness of birth, the holiness of her life, and the grace of working miracles [,in the year 1440].
At Sebaste, in Armenia, the forty holy Cappadocian soldiers. Under the President Agricolaus, in the time of the Emperor Licinius, after undergoing bonds and a foul imprisonment, and after their faces had been bruised with stones, they were stripped naked, and exposed all night upon the surface of a frozen pool during the bitterest cold of winter, where their bodies perished by the frost, and at length by the breaking of their legs. The illustrious glory of them all hath been celebrated by holy Basil, and the other Fathers in their writings, the chief among them were named Cyrion and Candidus. We keep their feast upon the morrow after.
At Nyssa, holy Gregory, [in the year 396,] Bishop of that see, brother of blessed Basil the Great. He is very famous for his life and learning. For defending the Catholic faith he was driven out of his own city by the Arian Emperor Valens.
At Barcelona, in Spain, holy Pacian, Bishop of that see, famous not only for his life but also for his words, who died in a good old age in the time of the Emperor Theodosius.
