Libr. 4 al cap. 4 di Luca dopo la metà
Noi vediamo che l'invidia portata (al Signore) dai suoi concittadini non fu piccola, perché fece loro dimenticare l'affetto che si portano d'ordinario le persone dello stesso luogo, e cambiò in odio crudele i motivi ch'essi avevano d'amarlo. Noi apprendiamo ancora da questo esempio e dalle parole (del Signore), che vanamente si attende soccorso dalla misericordia celeste, se si invidiano i frutti della virtù del prossimo. Il Signore disprezza gl'invidiosi: e rifiuta i miracoli della sua onnipotenza a quelli che perseguitano (con odio secreto) i divini benefizi accordati agli altri. Perché la maniera di agire del Signore nella sua umanità esprime la condotta della sua divinità: e, con cose visibili, ci mostra quel ch'è invisibile.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Prendete con voi dei doni e andate al padrone di quel paese: e, trovatolo, inchinatevi dinanzi a lui fino a terra:

Perciò non senza ragione il Salvatore si giustifica di non aver fatto nella sua patria alcun miracolo di potenza: senza dubbio affinché nessuno pensasse che l'attaccamento alla patria dev'essere considerato come un sentimento spregevole. Egli che amava tutti, non poteva, certo, non amare i suoi concittadini: ma sono essi, che, per invidia, hanno abdicato all'amor della patria. «In verità vi dico: che c'erano molte vedove ai giorni d'Elia» Luc. 4,25. Son chiamati giorni di Elia, non perché gli appartenessero, ma perché furono testimoni delle azioni di esso Elia: o anche perché Elia faceva giorno a quelli che scorgevano nelle sue opere la luce d'una grazia spirituale, e si convertivano al Signore. E così il cielo era aperto a quelli che scoprivano i misteri divini ed eterni: mentre rimaneva chiuso e regnava la carestia, quando non c'era più conoscenza di Dio (sulla terra). Ma di ciò abbiam parlato più diffusamente nel trattato che ho scritto sulle vedove.

Lettura 3
«E c'erano molti lebbrosi nella Giudea al tempo del profeta Eliseo: eppure nessuno di loro fu mondato, eccetto Naaman, il Siro» Luc. 4,27. La parola sempre salutare del Signore ci dà evidentemente qui un insegnamento, e ci esorta a diportarci con zelo nel culto alla divinità: perch'essa ci mostra che colui solo fu guarito e liberato dalla malattia di cui il suo corpo portava i segni, che si applicò a cercare la sua guarigione col compiere coscienziosamente quanto gli fu prescritto. Perché i benefici divini non vengono dati alle anime che dormono, ma a quelle che vegliano e operano. Dicemmo in un altro libro, che quella vedova a cui fu inviato Elia è una figura profetica della Chiesa. Fu il popolo (Ebreo) che primo formò la Chiesa, ma per far posto a un altro popolo composto di nazioni straniere. Questo popolo era lebbroso e pieno di macchie prima d'essere immerso nel mistico fiume: ma esso, dopo il sacramento del battesimo, è stato mondato dalle macchie corporali e spirituali, e senza più lebbra, è divenuto una vergine immacolata e senza ruga.

Francesca, nobile matrona Romana, fin dalla prima fanciullezza diede illustri esempi di virtù; poiché disprezzando i giuochi fanciulleschi e le attrattive del mondo, trovava tutto il suo diletto nella solitudine e nella preghiera. A undici anni, fece proponimento di consacrare la sua verginità a Dio e di entrare in un monastero: tuttavia per umile sottomissione alla volontà dei parenti, si maritò a Lorenzo dei Ponziani, giovane altrettanto ricco che nobile. Nel matrimonio conservò sempre, per quanto poté, il genere di vita austera propostosi; abborrente dagli spettacoli, festini e atri simili divertimenti, portava una veste di lana molto semplice, e tutto il tempo che le rimaneva dalle cure domestiche, lo impiegava nella preghiera o nel servizio del prossimo; applicandosi insieme colla più grande sollecitudine a ritrarre le dame Romane dalle pompe del secolo e dai vani abbigliamenti. Per questo fondò a Roma, vivente tuttora il marito, la casa delle Oblate della Congregazione di Monte Oliveto, sotto la regola di san Benedetto. Sopportò l'esilio del marito, la perdita dei beni e le disgrazie dell'intera famiglia non solo con sommo coraggio, ma, rendendo grazie col beato Giobbe, ripeteva spesso con lui: «Il Signore me l'ha dato, il Signore me l'ha tolto: sia benedetto il nome del Signore».

Morto il marito, corse alla predetta casa delle Oblate, implorando umilmente con molte lacrime, nudi i piedi, con una fune al collo e prostrata per terra, d'essere ammessa nel loro numero. Appagata nel suo desiderio, benché fosse la madre di tutte, tuttavia ella non si gloriava d'altro che d'esser chiamata serva, donna vilissima e vaso impuro. E questo disprezzo di sé ella lo manifestava e colle parole e coll'esempio; perché sovente tornando da una vigna nei sobborghi, portava sulla propria testa o qualche fascio di sarmenti, o conduceva attraverso la Città un asino carico di legna: soccorreva i poveri e faceva loro larghe elemosine; e visitando gl'infermi negli ospedali, non li sollevava solo con cibo materiale, ma ancora con avvisi salutari. Si sforzava continuamente di ridurre in soggezione il proprio corpo con veglie, digiuni, cilizio, catena di ferro e frequenti discipline. Non faceva che un pasto al giorno con erbe e legumi, e l'acqua era la sua bevanda. Talvolta però, per ordine del suo confessore, da cui dipendeva completamente, moderava alquanto queste austerità corporali.

Contemplava i divini misteri, e specialmente la passione di Cristo Signore, con sì gran fervore e con tanta copia di lacrime, che sembrava morirne per la violenza del dolore. Spesso anche, nel pregare, sopra-tutto dopo aver ricevuto il santissimo sacramento dell'Eucaristia, ella rimaneva immobile collo spirito elevato in Dio e rapita nella contemplazione delle cose celesti. Perciò il nemico dell'uman genere faceva ogni sforzo per distoglierla da questo genere di vita con diversi oltraggi e percosse ma ella imperterrita lo deluse sempre e ne riportò glorioso trionfo, grazie al soccorso del suo Angelo, col quale conversava famigliarmente. Risplendé per il dono delle guarigioni e di profezia, onde predisse il futuro e penetrò nel segreto dei cuori. Più d'una volta, andando ella tutta assorta in Dio, le acque correnti dei ruscelli e la pioggia che cadeva dal cielo non la bagnavano punto. A sua preghiera il Signore moltiplicò pochi pezzi di pane bastanti appena a nutrire tre suore, così che non solo ne furono saziate quindici, ma ne avanzò tanto da riempirne un canestro; e una volta estinse completamente la sete delle medesime suore con grappoli di fresca uva ottenuti miracolosamente da una vite sospesa a un albero, mentre nel mese di Gennaio raccoglievano della legna fuori di Roma. Infine, chiara per meriti e miracoli, se ne volò al Signore, nel suo cinquantesimo anno di età. Paolo V sommo Pontefice l'iscrisse nel novero dei Santi.

Omelia 11 sui Vangeli
Il regno dei cieli, fratelli carissimi, si dice simile a cose terrene, affinché l'anima si elevi da ciò che conosce a ciò che non conosce affatto, così che dall'esempio delle cose visibili si sollevi alle invisibili, e come incitata da ciò che ha appreso, s'infiammi a tal punto da imparare ad amare, per mezzo dell'affetto per un bene conosciuto, anche beni sconosciuti. Ecco dunque che il regno dei cieli si paragona ad un tesoro nascosto in un campo. L uomo che l'ha trovato, lo tiene nascosto e, per la gioia di possederlo, va a vendere tutto ciò che possiede e compra quel campo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Apre la sua bocca alla sapienza e la legge della bontà è sulla sua lingua. Sorveglia l'andamento della sua casa
* e non mangia il pane nell'ozio.

Ed in ciò si deve anche notare che il tesoro trovato viene nascosto perché sia conservato: poiché non riuscirà a difendere dagli spiriti maligni l'ardore del desiderio che sente per il cielo, colui che non lo sottrae alle umane lodi. Infatti nella vita presente ci troviamo come in una via, lungo la quale ci dirigiamo alla patria. Gli spiriti maligni ci tendono insidie lungo la strada, come ladruncoli. Portare dunque pubblicamente un tesoro per via è come desiderare di essere derubati. Ora io dico questo, non perché il prossimo non veda le nostre opere buone, poiché sta scritto: «Vedano le vostre opere buone e glorifichino il Padre vostro che è nei cieli»; ma perché non cerchiamo lodi dall'esterno per quello che facciamo. L'opera quindi sia pure pubblica, ma rimanga occulta l'intenzione; affinché noi possiamo dare al prossimo l'esempio di un'opera buona, e tuttavia con l'intenzione, per la quale cerchiamo di piacere soltanto a Dio, desideriamo sempre il segreto.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

Il tesoro è il desiderio del cielo, e il campo nel quale è nascosto, è una vita degna del cielo. Vende subito ogni cosa per comperare questo campo chi, rinunziando ai piaceri della carne, con pratica esatta di questa vita di cielo, calpesta tutti i suoi desideri terreni, così che nulla più gli piaccia di ciò che solletica la carne, e il suo spirito non tema nulla di ciò che distrugge la vita carnale.

The noble Roman matron Frances A was born in the year 1384, and was a pattern of godliness from her earliest years. As a child she shrank from games, and set no store by the amusements of the world, but delighted to be continually alone and engaged in prayer. At the age of eleven years she desired to consecrate her virginity to God, and to enter a convent, but humbly yielded obedience to the wishes of her parents, and was married to Lawrence de' Pontiani, a young man whose rank was equal to his wealth. As a wife she persevered, as far as she lawfully could, in her determination to lead an austere life; she abstained as much as possible from going to shows, feasts, and such like amusements, dressed plainly in woollen stuffs, and spent in prayer or the service of her neighbour whatever time she did not occupy with her duties as mistress of her husband's house. She strove earnestly to wean the married women of Rome from the vanities of the world and the frivolities of dress. To this end she founded during her husband's lifetime the Sisterhood of the Oblates, under the rule of the Benedictine congregation called of the Mount of Olives. When it pleased God, in the year 1413, that her husband should be banished, all her goods taken away, and her home ruined, she meekly bowed down before His holy will, often repeating the words of the blessed Job The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord. i. 21.

On her husband's death she in 1437 betook herself immediately to the house of the Oblates, and, with her feet bare and a rope round her neck, threw herself down on the threshold, entreating the sisters with tears to receive her into their number. When she obtained her wish, although she was the mother of them all, she would be among them only as one that served, glorying rather to be called the most degraded of women and a vessel of uncleanness. Her lowly esteem of herself was shown both by her word and example. She passed often through the city from a vineyard in the country carrying a bundle of sticks on her head, or driving an ass laden with faggots; she succoured the needy, for whom she collected large alms, and visited the sick in the hospitals, ministering to them both food for the body and exhortations healthful for their souls. She strove continually to bring her body into subjection by watchings, fastings, haircloth, the wearing of an iron girdle, and the often use of a scourge. She never ate but once a day, and then only vegetables, and she took no drink but water. These severities she however sometimes relaxed, in obedience to her confessor, on whose word and wishes she framed her customs.

So great was her mental realisation of the things of God, and chiefly of the sufferings of the Lord Christ, and so abundant her tears in contemplating them, that she seemed sometimes about to sink under her grief. Often when she was engaged in prayer, and principally after she had received the Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist, her spirit became altogether lifted up to God, and she remained motionless, carried away by the thought of heavenly things. The enemy of man assailed her with diverse reproaches and buffetings to break her off her intent, but she feared him not, and with the help of an Angel whom God gave her to be her familiar friend, she won a noble victory over the tempter. God glorified her with the gifts of healing and of prophecy, whereby she foretold things to come, and saw the secrets of the hearts of men. More than once while her thoughts were busy in God she remained unwet by streams or rain. When there was left only bread enough for three sisters, the Lord at her prayers was pleased so to multiply it, that fifteen had enough, and the basket was filled again with the fragments. In the month of January also, when the sisters were gathering sticks in the country, and were thirsty, she satisfied them abundantly with bunches of fresh grapes from a tree. She departed to be with the Lord, famous for good works and miracles, in the fifty-sixth year of her age, upon the 9th day of March, in the year of our Lord 1440. The Supreme Pontiff Paul V. caused her to be numbered among the saints.

Dearly beloved brethren, the kingdom of heaven is likened unto the things of earth, to the end that by the mean of things which we know, our mind may rise to the contemplation of the things which we know not by the example of things which are seen, may fix her gaze on things which are not seen by the touch of things which she useth, may be warmed towards the things which she useth not; by things which she knoweth and loveth, to love also the things which she knoweth not. For, behold, “the kingdom of heaven is likened unto treasure hid in a field, the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and, for joy thereof, goeth and selleth all that he hath and buyeth that field.”

And herein we must remark that the treasure, when once it hath been found, is hidden to keep it safe. He whose intimate yearnings after God are not hidden from the praise of men, is open thereby to the attacks of evil spirits. In this life we are, as it were, journeying homewards on a road beset by evil spirits who are like highwaymen. He therefore inviteth robbery who carrieth his treasure ostentatiously. Doubtless our neighbour should be able to see our good works, as it is written: “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” But this is not to be understood to mean that we are to seek the praise of men by what we do. Rather, let us in such wise work in the open that the inner intention of devotion is not advertised. So we shall give an example to our neighbour, and yet keep hidden, except from the sight of God, our purpose of pleasing him.

Here we have a display of a spite not very common. Their hatred of Christ, and their desire to find grounds for that hatred in what in Him appealed for their love, had made them forget their local friendliness to a fellow-citizen. By this example as well as by God's declaration, thou mayest learn that thou wilt wait in vain to be helped of His mercy, whilst thou art envious of the spiritual good of thy neighbour. Yea, the Lord turneth Him away from the envious, and will not show the mighty works of His power to such as are bitter against His gifts to others. The example of Himself which God hath been pleased to set before us is that of His doings in the Flesh, and it is by these His doings which He suffered to be seen, that we are taught touching those which are unseen.

Martyrology {anticipated}
