In eo supplicio mortui sunt omnes, præter Melithonem natu minimum. Quem cum præsens mater ejus, fractis cruribus, adhuc viventem vidisset, sic cohortata est: Fili, paulisper sustine; ecce Christus ad januam stat adjuvans te. Cum vero reliquorum corpora plaustris imponi cerneret, ut in rogum inférrentur, ac filium suum relinqui, quod speraret impia turba puerum, si vixisset, ad idolorum cultum revocari posse; ipso in humeros sublato, sancta mater vehicula Mártyrum corporibus onusta strenue prosequebatur: in cujus amplexu Melithon spiritum Deo reddidit, ejusque corpus in eumdem illum ceterorum Mártyrum rogum pia mater injecit: ut qui fide et virtute conjunctissimi fuerant, funeris étiam societate copulati, una in cælum pervenirent. Combustis illis, eorum reliquiæ projectæ in profluentem, cum mirabiliter in unum confluxissent locum, salvæ et integræ repertæ, honorifico sepulchro conditæ sunt.

Rinchiusi più volte in orribile prigione, carichi di catene, dopo aver avuto fracassata la faccia a colpi di pietra, furono costretti a passare la notte sopra uno stagno gelato, nudi, all'aria aperta, nel rigore d'un inverno rigidissimo, affinché, gelati dal freddo, vi morissero. Or la stessa era la preghiera di tutti: Quaranta siamo entrati nello stadio, e a quaranta dona pure la corona, o Signore; non ne manchi neppur uno a questo numero. Questo numero è onorevole, perché tu l'hai consacrato col digiuno di quaranta giorni, e per esso fu data al mondo la legge divina; ed Elia cercando Dio con un digiuno di quaranta giorni, ottenne di vederlo. Tale era la loro preghiera.

Mentre tutti gli altri custodi dormivano, il portinaio solo vegliava, il quale, al vederli pregare e circondati di luce, e degli Angeli che scendevano dal cielo come mandati dal Re e dare delle corone a trentanove soldati, così la discorreva tra sé. Essi son ben quaranta; e dov'è la corona del quarantesimo? Pensando egli così, uno del numero, cui era mancato il coraggio a sopportare quel freddo, si gettò nel vicino bagno tiepido, affliggendo sommamente quei Santi. Ma Dio non permise che le loro preghiere rimanessero inascoltate: perché il portinaio meravigliato di quanto accadeva, svegliati tosto i custodi, si tolse le vesti e, professandosi ad alta voce cristiano, si unì ai Martiri. Quando le guardie del governatore appresero che anche il portinaio era cristiano, ruppero a tutti le gambe a colpi di bastone.

In questo supplizio morirono tutti, eccetto Melitone, il più giovane. La madre, presente, nel vederlo, dopo che gli furono spezzate le gambe, ancor vivo, così lo esortava: «Figlio, soffri ancora un po'; ecco, Cristo sta alla porta ad aiutarti». Al vedere poi porre sui carri i corpi degli altri per essere portati al rogo e lasciarsi il figlio suo, sperando l'empia turba di poter ricondurre il fanciullo al culto degli idoli, se fosse vissuto, la santa madre presolo sulle proprie spalle coraggiosa seguiva i carri che portavano i corpi dei Martiri. Melitone rese l'anima a Dio tra le braccia di lei, e il suo corpo fu posto dalla pia madre sullo stesso rogo degli altri Martiri; affinché quelli ch'erano stati sì strettamente uniti nella fede e nel coraggio, lo fossero ancora nello stesso funerale, e giungessero poi insieme nel cielo. Bruciati i corpi, le loro reliquie vennero gettate in un fiume, ma radunatesi miracolosamente in un luogo, e ritrovate salve ed intatte, furono sepolte in luogo onorevole.

Libero 5 su Luca, cap. 6, dopo l'inizio.
Fate bene attenzione a tutto, al modo in cui sale con i discepoli e discende alle folle. In che modo infatti la folla poteva vedere Cristo se non in basso? Non Lo segue sulle altezze, non sale ai vertici. Pertanto dove discende, trova gli infermi: sulle altezze infatti non ci possono essere infermi. Indi anche Matteo insegna che i debilitati furono sanati nei luoghi inferiori. Prima difatti va sanato ciascuno in modo che possa ascendere al monte pian piano con le forze che crescono; e quindi sana ciascuno nei luoghi inferiore, cioè, li richiama dalla lussuria, rimuove il danno della cecità. È sceso alle nostre ferite: affinché, con un certo uso ed abbondanza della sua natura, ci faccia essere compartecipi del regno dei cieli.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. I santi di Dio hanno perseverato nella fraternità a causa del comando del Signore e delle leggi paterne.

Beati voi poveri, perché vostro è il regno di Dio. San Luca pose soltanto quattro beatitudini del Signore, mentre san Matteo otto: ma in quelle otto ci stanno queste quattro, ed in queste quattro quelle otto. Questi infatti ha come abbracciato le quattro virtù cardinali: quello in quelle otto ha rivelato un numero mistico. Infatti molti Salmi hanno l'iscrizione «per l'ottava»: e ricevi ordine di metterti in grado di partecipare in qualche modo a queste otto beatitudini. Come infatti l'ottava è la perfezione della nostra speranza, così l'ottava è la somma delle virtù.

Sermone 16 sulle Parole del Signore, tomo 10, dopo il principio
Perché riprendi chi t'ha offeso? È perché senti dispiacere che abbia peccato contro di te? Non sia mai. Se tu fai ciò per amore di te stesso, non fai nulla: se lo fai per amore di lui, fai ottimamente. Osserva poi nelle stesse parole del Signore, per amore di chi tu debba farlo, se di te o di lui. «Se ti ascolta, dice, hai guadagnato il tuo fratello» Matth. 18,25. Fallo dunque per lui, per guadagnarlo. Facendo così, lo guadagni: se no egli è perduto. Come dunque molti non fanno alcun conto di questi peccati, e dicono: Che gran male ho fatto ? non ho offese che un uomo! Non disprezzare tal cosa: sì, hai peccato contro un uomo.

After being often remanded to an horrid prison-house, bound in fetters, and their mouths bruised with stones, they were ordered out in the depth of winter, stripped naked, and put upon a frozen pool, to die of cold during the night. The prayer of them all was the same O Lord, forty of us have begun to run in the race, grant that all forty may receive the crown, let not one be wanting at the last. Behold, is it not an honourable number in thy sight, Who didst bless the fast of forty days, and at the end thy Divine Law came forth to the earth? When also Elias sought thee, Thou, O God, didst reveal thyself unto him when he had fasted for forty days. Even so was their petition.

And as he looked he saw one of them whose courage could not bear the cold, come and leap into a warm bath that stood by; and the Saints were grievously afflicted. Nevertheless God suffered not that their prayer should return unto them void; for the watchman wondered, and called the keepers, and stripped himself of his clothes; and, when with a loud voice he had confessed himself a Christian, he joined the Martyrs. When the servants of the President knew that the watchman also was a Christian, they brake the legs of them all with staves.

Under this torment died they all, saving Melithon, who was the youngest. Now, his mother stood by, and when she saw that his legs were broken, but that he was yet alive, she cried, and said My son, have patience but a little longer. Behold how Christ standeth at the door to help thee. When she saw the bodies of all the others put upon carts and taken away to be burned, and that her son was left behind, because the multitude wickedly hoped that being but a lad, if he lived, he might yet be drawn to commit idolatry, the holy mother took him on her own shoulders and bravely followed behind the carts laden with the bodies of the Martyrs. In her arms Melithon gave up his soul to God, and the mother who loved him so well laid his body with her own hands upon the pile, with those of the other Martyrs, that, as they had all been one in faith and strength, in death they might not be divided, and might enter heaven together. After the burning, what remained of them was thrown into a running stream, but the ashes were all washed together into one place, and being found and rescued, they were laid in an honourable sepulchre.

Mark well how Jesus goeth upward with His disciples, and downward to the multitude. How should the multitude behold Christ, save in a lower place? Such go not up to the things which are above; such attain not to the things which are high. And when Jesus cometh down, He findeth such as are diseased for such like go not up to the heights. Hence also Matthew saith that there were there all sick people, iv. 23. Of these every man had need of healing, that, when he had received strength, by and by, he might go up into the mountain. And therefore, being Himself come down, He healeth them in the plain, that is to say, He calleth them away from their lust, and freeth them of their blindness. He cometh down to our wounds, to the end that by a certain use of His nature, and by the abundance thereof, He might make us joint-heirs of the kingdom of heaven.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. Because of the covenant of the Lord, and the laws of their fathers, the Saints of God abode in brotherly love,

It is written at the head of more than one of the Psalms that they are for the octave, and thou hast received the commandment Give a portion to seven, and also to eight to seven or eight what? Perchance degrees of blessedness. For as this eighth Beatitude doth name the most glorious realization of our hope the kingdom of Heaven so doth it also name the most royal exertion of our strength blessed are they which are persecuted.

Why tell him his fault? Because he hath made thee smart by trespassing against thee? God forbid. If thou tell him his fault because thou lovest thyself, thou dost nothing. But if thou tell it him because thou lovest him, then dost thou do exceeding well. Hear now, in the words of the Gospel itself, for love of whom, thou oughtest to do it, of thyself, or of him. The Lord saith: If he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. Therefore it behoveth thee to do it for his sake, that thou mayest gain him; since, if thou so do, haply thou mayest gain him; whereas, if thou do it not, he may haply perish. Why then are there so many who reckon lightly of a trespass against their brother, and say I have done no great offence, for I have trespassed only against my fellow man? Deem it not light; thou hast trespassed, though it be against thy fellow man.

A Sardi sant'Eutimio Vescovo, il quale, per il culto delle sante immagini, da Michèle, Imperatore iconoclasta, fu mandato in esilio, ed in fine, sotto l'impero di Teófìlo, flagellato barbaramente con nervi di bue, compi il martirio.
A Cordova, nella Spagna, sant'Eulogio, Prete e Martire, che nella persecuzione dei Saracèni, per la magnifica ed intrepida confessione di Cristo, colpito con verghe e schiaffi e decapitato con la spada, meritò di esser congiunto ai Martiri della medesima città, i cui combattimenti per la fede aveva emulato con gli scritti.

Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow we keep the feast of the holy Confessor John of God, founder of the Order of Brethren Hospitallers of the Sick. Famous for his pity toward the poor, and for his lowly esteem of himself, whom the Supreme Pontiff Leo XIII declared the Patron in heaven of all the sick and those who nurse them, and of whom mention hath been made upon the 8th day of this present month of March.
March 11th 2026, the 22nd day of the Moon, were born into the better life:
