Gesù andò al monte Oliveto Joann. 8,1, al monte fertile, al monte dell'unguento, al monte dell'unzione. Perché, dove conveniva meglio che Cristo insegnasse, se non sul monte Oliveto? Il nome di Cristo infatti viene da crisma: e la parola Greca crisma, significa in Latino unzione. Ora egli ci ha unti perché ci ha destinati a lottare contro il demonio. «E all'alba tornò di nuovo al tempio e tutto il popolo accorse a lui: e, sedutosi, cominciò ad ammaestrarli» Joann. 8,2: e non gli mettevano le mani sopra, perché non giudicava ancora di soffrir la passione. Osservate ora come sia stata tentata dai nemici la mansuetudine del Signore.

Comprendiamo, o fratelli, come fu ammirabile la mansuetudine del Signore. Essi avevano notato ch'egli era di grande dolcezza, e d'una estrema mansuetudine. Di lui certamente era stato predetto: «Cingi la tua spada al tuo fianco, o potentissimo. Col tuo splendore e colla tua bellezza, vieni, t'avanza allegramente e regna: per la verità, la mansuetudine e la giustizia» Ps. 44,4. Egli ci portò la verità come dottore, la mansuetudine come liberatore e la giustizia come colui che conosce tutto. Per questi tre attributi egli doveva regnare nello Spirito Santo, come aveva predetto un profeta. Quando egli parlava, la verità si riconosceva nei suoi discorsi: e nel vederlo sì calmo dinanzi ai suoi nemici, non poteva non ammirarsi la sua mansuetudine. Quando perciò i suoi nemici si sentirono torturati da livore ed invidia per queste due virtù, cioè per la verità e la mansuetudine, gli tesero insidia a proposito della terza, cioè della giustizia.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

33rd Tract on John.
Jesus went unto the Mount of Olives, even unto that fruitful Mount, that anointing Mount, that Mount of Chrism. Where else became it Christ to teach, if not on the Mount of Olives? For the word Christ is derived from Chrisma, and Chrisma is the Greek for ointment. He hath anointed us that we may be able to wrestle with the devil. And, early in the morning, He came again into the temple; and all the people came unto Him; and He sat down, and taught them and no man laid hands on Him, because He was not yet pleased to suffer. And now listen how His enemies tried the Lord's meekness.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear.
* Therefore is this distress come upon us.
℣. And Reuben answered his brethren, saying Spake I not unto you, saying: Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear?
℟. Therefore is this distress come upon us.

℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.

In thy comeliness and thy beauty go forward, fare prosperously, and reign, because of truth, and meekness, and righteousness. Ps. xliv. 4, 5. And He came bringing truth as one that teacheth, meekness as one that delivereth, and righteousness as one that knoweth. Because of these it was that the Prophet declared, in the Holy Ghost, that He was to reign. Whenever He spake, truth shone forth whenever He spared His enemies, meekness was made glorious. And His enemies, racked with envy and hatred by His truth and His meekness, laid a stumbling-block for His righteousness.

A Cesarèa, in Cappadócia, la passione di san Longino soldato, che si dice abbia trafitto colla lancia il costato del Signore.
Nello stesso giorno il natale di sant'Aristóbulo, discepolo degli Apostoli, il quale, dopo aver compiuto il corso della predicazione, compì il martirio.
Nell'Ellesponto san Menigno lavandaio, martirizzato sotto l'Imperatore Décio.
Nell'Egitto san Nicàndro Martire, che, cercando sollecitamente le reliquie dei santi Martiri, meritò di divenire anch'egli Martire sotto l'Imperatore Diocleziàno.
A Cordova, nella Spagna, santa Leocrizia, Vergine e Martire, la quale per la fede di Cristo, nella persecuzione degli Arabi, venne in diversi modi tormentata e decapitata con la spada.
A Salonicco santa Matròna, la quale, essendo serva di una Giudèa, e adorando Cristo nascostamente, e con occulte orazioni frequentando ogni giorno la Chiesa, fu scoperta dalla sua padrona e tormentata in molti modi, e da ultimo, percossa fino alla morte con duri bastoni, nella confessione di Cristo, rese a Dio l'incorrotto suo spirito.

Presso Càpua san Specióso Monaco, la cui anima (come scrive il beato Gregório Papa) da un suo fratello germano fu vista volare al cielo.
A Parigi santa Luisa de Marillac, vedova Le Gras, Fondatrice, insieme con san Vincénzo de' Paoli, delle Figlie della Carità, zelantissima nel soccorrere i poveri, dal Papa Pio undecimo ascritta nei fasti delle Sante.

On the same day, the holy martyr Menignus, a fuller, who suffered under the Emperor Decius.
In Egypt, the holy martyr Nicander, who would make careful search for the relics of holy martyrs, and earned to become a martyr himself under the Emperor Diocletian.
At Cordova, the holy Virgin and martyr Leocritia, [in the year 880.]
At Rome, holy Pope Zachary, who governed the Church of God with all watchfulness, and fell asleep in peace, famous for good works, [in the year 752.]
