Homilia 1 de jejúnio, ante med.
Móysen per jejúnium nóvimus in montem ascendísse: neque enim áliter ausus esset vérticem fumántem adíre, atque in calíginem íngredi, nisi jejúnio munítus. Per jejúnium mandáta dígito Dei in tábulis conscrípta suscépit. Item supra montem jejúnium legis latæ conciliátor fuit: inférius vero, gula ad idololatríam pópulum dedúxit, ac contaminávit. Sedit, inquit, pópulus manducáre et bíbere, et surrexérunt lúdere. Quadragínta diérum labórem ac perseverántiam, Dei servo contínuo jejunánte ac oránte, una tantum pópuli ebríetas cassam irritámque réddidit. Quas enim tábulas Dei dígito conscríptas jejúnium accépit, has ebríetas contrívit: Prophéta sanctíssimo indígnum existimánte, vinoléntum pópulum a Deo legem accípere.

Hoc prætérea tentatiónes propúlsat, ad pietátem armat, cum sobrietáte hábitat, temperántiæ ópifex est: in bellis fortitúdinem affert, in pace quiétem docet: nazarǽum sanctíficat, sacerdótem pérficit: neque enim fas est sine jejúnio sacrifícium attíngere, non solum in mýstica nunc et vera Dei adoratióne, sed nec in illa, in qua sacrifícium secúndum legem in figúra offerebátur. Sermone di san Basilio Magno
Omelia 1 sul digiuno, prima della metà
Sappiamo che Mosè per il digiuno salì sul monte: perché se non fosse stato fortificato dal digiuno non avrebbe certo osato portarsi sulla cima fumante ed entrare nella nuvola. Per il digiuno meritò di ricevere le tavole su cui erano i comandamenti scritti dal dito di Dio. E sul monte il digiuno ottenne il dono della legge: ma ai piedi di esso, l'ingordigia fece cadere il popolo nell'idolatria, e lo contaminò di peccato. « Il popolo si sedè, dice (la Scrittura), per mangiare e bere, e si alzarono per tripudiare» Esodo 22,6. E L'intemperanza del popolo, in un sol giorno, rese vano e inutile lo sforzo e la perseveranza di quaranta giorni continui di digiuno e di preghiera del servo di Dio. Le tavole scritte dal dito di Dio che il digiuno aveva meritate, le spezzò l'intemperanza: perché il santissimo Profeta giudicò che un popolo pieno di vino era in degno di ricevere la legge di Dio.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Questo popolo, che i più grandi prodigi avevano istruito sul culto (da rendere) a Dio, fu in un sol momento, per effetto del l'ingordigia, precipitato nel modo più vergognoso nel l'idolatria degli Egiziani. Se si paragonano insieme questi due fatti, si può vedere che il digiuno conduce a Dio, mentre le delizie compromettono la salvezza. Che cosa disonorò Esaù e lo rese servo del fratello? non fu una sola pietanza, per cui vendè la primogenitura ? Non fu invece per il digiuno che la preghiera di Anna ottenne Samuele? Che cosa rese inespugnabile il fortissimo Sansone? non fu forse il digiuno, onde fu concepito nel seno materno? Il digiuno lo concepì, il digiuno lo nutrì, il digiuno lo fece un grand'uomo. L'Angelo prescrisse saggiamente il digiuno alla madre, quando l'ammonì di non toccare tutto ciò che proviene dalla vite, di non bere vino, ne birra. Il digiuno generò i profeti, conferma e rafforza quelli che sono già forti.

l digiuno fa sapienti i legislatori: è per l'anima la migliore salvaguardia e per il corpo un amico sicuro, per gli uomini coraggiosi un preservativo e un'arma, agli atleti e ai combattenti serve di esercizio. Esso inoltre allontana le tentazioni, dà le armi per la pietà, dimora colla sobrietà e produce la temperanza: dà la forza nella guerra, insegna a vivere tranquillamente nella pace: santifica il nazareo, perfeziona il sacerdote: infatti non è possibile senza il digiuno accostarsi ai sacrificio, non solo ora, nella mistica e vera offerta di Dio, ma neppure in quella in cui si offriva un sacrificio figurativo secondo la legge. Il digiuno rese degno Elia di contemplare una grande visione: perché dopo essersi purificata l'anima con un digiuno di quaranta giorni, meritò in una spelonca di vedere Dio, per quanto è permesso ad un uomo. Mosè, ricevendo una seconda volta la legge, osservò di nuovo gli stessi digiuni di prima. I Niniviti non sarebbero scampati in nessun modo al minacciato sterminio, se insieme con essi non avessero digiunato anche gli animali. Chi furono quelli che morirono nel deserto? non furono quelli che peccarono per il desiderio di mangiare della carne?
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Mosè servo di Dio digiunò quaranta giorni e quaranta notti:
* Per meritare di ricevere la legge di Dio.

I miracoli che ha fatto nostro Signore Gesù Cristo sono certo opere divine, ed eccitano la mente umana ad elevarsi da questi avvenimenti visibili fino a Dio. Egli infatti è di tal natura da non potersi vedere cogli occhi; d'altra parte i miracoli che non cessa di fare governano il mondo intero, e prendendosi cura di tutte le creature colpiscono meno a motivo della loro continuità, così che quasi nessuno si degna fare attenzione alle stupende meraviglie che Dio opera in ciascun grano di semenza: ond'è ch'egli si riservò, nel la sua misericordia, di operare a tempo opportuno certe meraviglie fuori del corso abituale e delle leggi ordinarie della natura ; affinché (gli uomini avvezzi a contemplare i miracoli) quotidiani senza annettervi valore, stupissero nel vederne dei non più grandi, ma meno ordinari.

1st on Fasting
We know that it was with and by fasting that Moses went up into the Mount, for he had not dared to go up to that smoking summit, nor to have entered that darkness, except he had been made strong by a Fast. It was with fasting that he received the commandments, written by the finger of God upon tables of stone. Upon the mountain, that Fast made interest with Him Whose law was given unto it; but, below, gluttony was leading the people to the worship of idols and polluting them. It is written The people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play. Ex. xxxii. 6. That one fit of drunken frenzy, on the part of the people, made void and of none effect all the toil and patience of the forty days, during the which the servant of God had fasted and prayed unceasingly. To the Fast had been given those tables of stone written on with the finger of God; the Feast's work was to break them, by the hand of the most holy prophet, who deemed a nation of drunkards a nation unmeet to receive law from God.

In a moment of time, that people, who had by great wonders been taught to worship God, were, by gluttony, dropped back into the cesspool of Egyptian idolatry. What was it that degraded Esau, and made him a slave to his brother? Was it not that one dish of pottage for which he sold his birthright? Gen. xxv. 29-34. Was it not prayer when joined to fasting that gave Samuel to his mother? (1 Kings Sam. i. 7, 19.) What made the mighty Samson invincible? Was it not the fast during the which he was conceived in his mother's womb? The fast it was which made him to be conceived; the fast, which fed him; the fast, which made a man of him, even as the Angel of the Lord commanded his mother, saying: She may not eat of anything that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink. Judges xiii. 14. Fasting is the mother of prophets, the strength and stay of mighty men.

It is fasting which giveth wisdom to lawgivers; fasting which is the trustiest keeper of the soul, and the safest companion for the body. It is fasting which maketh a man strong to strive against temptation, and which is to godliness as a fenced city; even fasting, whose fellow is soberness, and her work temperance. It is fasting which maketh men to I wax valiant in fight; fasting which teacheth to rest in time of peace. Fasting maketh a Nazarite to be holy, and a priest perfect. Without a fast it is unlawful to touch the Sacrifice, not only in that mystic and true worship of God which now is, but also according to the law, in those sacrifices which were offered of old time as figures of the true. It was fasting which opened the eyes of Elias to look upon the visions of God, even as it is written, that when he had fasted forty days and forty nights he was in the mount of God, even Horeb, and he was made able, so far as man may be made able, to see God. 3 Kings xix. seq. Even so also was Moses in that Mount forty days and forty nights, fasting, at what time he again received the Law. Ex. xxxiv. 28. Unless the Ninevites had fasted, both man and beast, herd and flock, they had not escaped from the ruin that hung over them. Jonah iii. 710. In the wilderness fell some and who were they? Yea, they were such as lusted after flesh meat. Num. xi. 33.

The miracles which our Lord Jesus Christ did were the very works of God, and they enlighten the mind of man by mean of things which are seen, that he may know more of God. God is Himself of such a Substance as eye cannot see, and the miracles, by the which He ruleth the whole world continually, and satisfieth the need of everything that He hath made, are by use become so common, that scarce any will vouchsafe to see that there are wonderful and amazing works of God in every grain of seed of grass. According to His mercy He kept some works to be done in their due season, but out of the common course and order of nature, that men might see them and be astonished, not because they are greater, but because they are rarer than those which they lightly esteem, since they see them day by day.

Martirologio {anticipated}
Anno del Signore 2026, 16 Marzo, Luna 27

A Roma la passione di san Ciriaco Diacono, il quale, dopo i lunghi patimenti del carcere, cosparso di pece bollente e disteso su una catasta, stirato inoltre con nervi e percosso con bastoni, da ultimo con Largo e Smaràgdo ed altri venti, per ordine di Massimiàno, fu decapitato. La festa però dei santi Ciriaco, Largo e Smaràgdo si celebra l'otto Agosto, giorno nel quale i corpi di quei ventitre Martiri furono dal beato Marcèllo Papa trasferiti e riverentemente sepolti.
Ad Aquilèia il natale del beato Ilario Vescovo e di Taziàno Diacono, i quali sotto l'Imperatore Numeriàno ed il Preside Berónio, dopo l'eculeo ed altri tormenti, insieme con Felice, Largo e Dionigi compirono il martirio.
In Licaónia san Papa Martire, il quale per la fede di Cristo battuto con verghe, lacerato con uncini di ferro, fu fatto camminare con calzari pieni di chiodi, quindi, legato ad un albero, passando al Signore, rese fruttifero quell'albero che era sterile.
Ad Anazàrbo, in Cilicia, san Giuliano Martire, il quale, sotto il Preside Marciano, lunghissimamente straziato, da ultimo, fu sommerso nel mare, chiuso in un sacco insieme a dei serpenti.
Nel Canadà i santi Martiri Giovanni de Brébeuf, Gabriéle Lalemant, Antonio Daniel, Carlo Garnier e Natale Chabanel, sacerdoti della Compagnia di Gesù, i quali nella Missione Urónica, in questo e in altri giorni, dopo molte fatiche e crudelissime torture, subirono fortemente la morte per Cristo.

Psalm 118(49-64) [2]
118:49 (Zai) Be thou mindful of thy word to thy servant, * in which thou hast given me hope.
118:50 This hath comforted me in my humiliation: * because thy word hath enlivened me.
118:51 The proud did iniquitously altogether: * but I declined not from thy law.
118:52 I remembered, O Lord, thy judgments of old: * and I was comforted.
118:53 A fainting hath taken hold of me, * because of the wicked that forsake thy law.
118:54 Thy justifications were the subject of my song, * in the place of my pilgrimage.
118:55 In the night I have remembered thy name, O Lord: * and have kept thy law.
118:56 This happened to me: * because I sought after thy justifications.
118:57 (Heth) O Lord, my portion, * I have said, I would keep thy law.
118:58 I entreated thy face with all my heart: * have mercy on me according to thy word.
118:59 I have thought on my ways: * and turned my feet unto thy testimonies.
118:60 I am ready, and am not troubled: * that I may keep thy commandments.
118:61 The cords of the wicked have encompassed me: * but I have not forgotten thy law.
118:62 I rose at midnight to give praise to thee; * for the judgments of thy justification.
118:63 I am a partaker with all them that fear thee, * and that keep thy commandments.
118:64 The earth, O Lord, is full of thy mercy: * teach me thy justifications.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
