Dal Profeta Isaia
Isa 7:10-15
10 E il Signore continuò a parlare ad Acaz, dicendo:
11 Chiedi per te un segno dal Signore Dio tuo nel profondo dell'abisso, oppure sopra dall'alto.
12 E Acaz disse: Non lo chiederò. per non tentare il Signore.
13 Ed egli replicò: Udite dunque, casa di David: È forse poco per voi l'esser molesti agli uomini, che volete esser molesti anche al mio Dio?
14 Appunto per questo il Signore ve lo darà lui un segno. Ecco, una vergine diventerà madre, e darà alla luce un figlio, che avrà nome Emanuele.
15 Si nutrirà di burro e di miele, finché sappia riprovare il male, e scegliere il bene.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Fu mandato l'Angelo Gabriele a Maria Vergine sposata a Giuseppe ad annunziarle il mistero ; e la Vergine si spaventò al chiarore: non temere, Maria, perché hai trovato grazia presso il Signore :
* Ecco, tu diventerai madre e darai alla luce colui che sarà chiamato Figlio dell'Altissimo.
℣. Il Signore Dio gli darà il trono di David, suo padre, e regnerà sulla casa di Giacobbe in eterno.

Isa 11:1-5
1 Ed uscirà un rampollo dal ceppo di Jesse, e sboccerà un fiore dalla sua radice.
2 E su di esso riposerà lo Spirito del Signore: spirito di sapienza e d'intelligenza, spirito di consiglio e di fortezza, spirito di scienza e di pietà;
3 E lo riempirà lo spirito del timore del Signore: egli non giudicherà secondo quel che si vede cogli occhi, né sentenzierà secondo quel che si ode cogli orecchi:
4 Ma giudicherà con giustizia i poveri, e sentenzierà con equità in favore degli umili della terra: e colpirà la terra colla verga della sua bocca, e col soffio delle sue labbra ucciderà l'empio.
5 E la giustizia sarà la fascia dei suoi lombi: e la fedeltà la cintura dei suoi fianchi.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Salve, o Maria, piena di grazia; il Signore è con te:

Isa 35:1-7
1 Si rallegrerà la regione deserta e impervia, esalterà la solitudine, e fiorirà come un giglio.
2 Essa germoglierà grandemente, ed esulterà lieta e canterà lodi: a lei è stata data la gloria del Libano, la vaghezza del Carmelo e di Saron, ed essi vedranno la gloria del Signore e lo splendore del nostro Dio.
3 Fortificate le braccia languide e rinfrancate le ginocchia deboli.
4 Dite ai pusillanimi: Fatevi animo, e non temete: ecco il vostro Dio che porta la vendetta della retribuzione: Dio stesso verrà e vi salverà.
5 Allora si apriranno gli occhi dei ciechi, e le orecchie dei sordi si schiuderanno.
6 Allora lo zoppo salterà come un cervo, e si scioglierà la lingua dei muti poiché sgorgheranno delle acque nel deserto, e dei torrenti nella solitudine.
7 E la terra che già fu arida, sarà come un lago, e la terra sitibonda, sarà mutata in fontane di acque.

℟. Ricevi, o Vergine Maria, l'annunzio che ti è trasmesso dal Signore per mezzo dell'Angelo: tu diventerai madre e darai alla luce un Dio e uomo insieme,

Sermone di san Leone Papa
Sermone 2 sulla Natività del Signore
Dio onnipotente e clemente, la cui natura è bontà, il cui volere è potere, la cui opera è misericordia, appena la malizia del diavolo ci attossicò col veleno della sua invidia, fin dagli stessi primordi del mondo preannunziò il rimedio della sua pietà destinato a rinnovare i mortali, quando dichiarò al serpente, che dalla donna sarebbe nato uno il quale colla sua virtù avrebbe schiacciato la sua testa orgogliosa e maliziosa, annunziando con ciò che il Cristo sarebbe venuto nella nostra carne, Dio insieme e uomo, e che, nato da una Vergine, avrebbe condannato colla sua nascita immacolata il rovinatore del genere umano.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Ecco, una vergine diventerà madre e darà alla luce un figlio, dice il Signore;
* E sarà chiamato col nome di Ammirabile, Dio, Forte.

E perché il diavolo dopo aver ingannato l'uomo colla sua astuzia si rallegrava nel vederlo privato dei doni celesti, e spogliato del privilegio dell'immortalità, sottoposto a una terribile sentenza di morte, e d'aver così trovato una certa consolazione ai suoi mali nella compagnia d'un prevaricatore ; e che anche Dio, obbedendo alle esigenze d'una giusta severità, aveva cambiato le sue disposizioni a riguardo dell'uomo che aveva creato in stato sì onorifico ; fu necessaria, dilettissimi, 1' economia d'un profondo disegno, perché un Dio immutabile, la cui volontà non può cessare di esser buona, compisse, con un mistero ancor più profondo, le prime intenzioni del suo amore; e perché l'uomo, trascinato nella colpa dall'astuzia e malvagità del demonio, non perisse, contrariamente al fine che Dio s'era proposto.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

Giunti pertanto, o dilettissimi, i tempi prestabiliti alla redenzione degli uomini, nostro Signore Gesù Cristo dalla sede del cielo discende e viene quaggiù, senza però lasciare la gloria del Padre, generato con un procedimento nuovo, con una nuova natività: con un procedimento nuovo, perché, invisibile nella sua natura, s'è fatto visibile nella nostra; immenso, ha voluto essere limitato; sussistente innanzi al tempo, cominciò ad essere nel tempo; Signore dell'universo, ha presa la forma d'un servo, velando la dignità della sua maestà; Dio impassibile, non disdegnò di farsi uomo passibile; e, immortale, di assoggettarsi alle leggi del la morte.

Libro 2 su Luca
Certo, sono occulti i misteri divini, né è facile a nessun uomo, giusta il detto di un profeta Is. 40, di conoscere il disegno di Dio. Tuttavia dagli altri fatti e istruzioni del Signore Salvatore, possiamo comprendere essere stato per un disegno particolare che venne scelta, per dare al mondo il Signore, una che fosse sposata ad un uomo. Ma perché non divenne madre prima d'essere sposata? Forse affinché non si dicesse che era diventata madre mediante adulterio.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Congratulatevi con me, voi tutti che amate il Signore: perché sebbene piccola, sono piaciuta all'Altissimo,
* E dal mio seno ho messo al mondo l'uomo Dio.
℣. Beata mi chiameranno tutte le generazioni, perché Dio ha riguardato ad un'umile ancella.
℟. E dal mio seno ho messo al mondo l'uomo Dio.

℣. Dègnati, padre, di benedirmi.
Benedizione. La stessa Vergine delle vergini, di cui celebriamo la festa, interceda per noi presso il Signore.

Lettura 8
« E l'Angelo entrò da lei » Luc. 1,28. Riconosci la vergine dagli atti, riconosci la vergine dalla modestia, riconoscila dall'oracolo (annunziatole), riconoscila dal mistero (che s'opera in lei). È proprio delle vergini tremare, spaventarsi all'approssimarsi di un uomo, temere ogni discorso di uomo. Imparino le donne ad imitare questo esempio di pudore. Ella vive sola nell'interno della casa, dove nessun uomo può vederla, solo un Angelo la scopre: sola, senza compagnia, sola, senza testimone, perché non venisse guasta da alcun profano colloquio, è salutata dall'Angelo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Godi, Maria Vergine, perché sola hai distrutto tutte le eresie, tu che hai creduto alle parole dell'Arcangelo Gabriele:
* E come Vergine hai dato alla luce un Dio-uomo, così dopo il parto sei rimasta Vergine inviolata.
℣. Beata sei tu che hai creduto: perché si sono adempiute le cose che ti sono state dette dal Signore.

Dacché non dalla bocca d'un uomo, ma d'un Angelo doveva essere annunziato il mistero di tanta missione. Quest'oggi per la prima volta s'è udito: «Lo Spirito Santo scenderà in te» Luc. 1,35. Ed è udito, e creduto. Infine: « Ecco, ella dice, l'ancella del Signore: mi avvenga secondo quello che hai detto » Luc. 1,38. Ammira umiltà, ammira abnegazione. Si chiama ancella del Signore lei, ch'è scelta a sua madre, né s'inorgoglisce a sì inattesa promessa.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

The Almighty and merciful God, Whose nature is goodness, Whose will is power, and Whose work is mercy, did, at the very beginning of the world, as soon as the devil's hatred had mortally poisoned us with the venom of his envy, foretell those remedies which His mercy had foreordained for our healing. He bade the serpent know that there was to be a Seed of the woman Who should yet bruise the swelling of his pestilential head; this Seed was none other than the Christ to come in the flesh, that God and Man in one Person, Who, being born of a Virgin, should, by His undefiled birth, damn the seducer of man.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

The mysteries of God are unsearchable, and it is especially declared by a Prophet, that a man can hardly know His counsels. Wisd. ix. 13. Nevertheless, some things have been revealed to us, and we may gather from some of the words and works of the Lord our Saviour, that there was a special purpose of God, in the fact that she who was chosen to be the mother of the Lord was espoused to a man. Why did not the power of the Highest overshadow her before she was so espoused? Perhaps it was lest any might blasphemously say that she had conceived in fornication the Holy One.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. Rejoice with me, all ye that love the Lord, for while I was yet a little one, I pleased the Most High.

The Greek word Enkainia, used by the Evangelist, signifieth the Feast of the Dedication of the Temple. The derivation thereof is kainon, which is, being interpreted, new; and the Dedication of anything new is thence called Enkainia. The use of this word is still preserved among ourselves; if any man put on his new coat for the first time we say that he enkainiateth. It was the use of the Jews to keep solemn holiday upon the Anniversary of the Dedication of the Temple, and this was the Feast-day which was being observed when the Lord spake the words which have been read.
