Sermone di san Beda, il Venerabile, Prete
Esposizione su Luca 1, 11-20.
Un Angelo apparve a Zaccaria, ritto alla destra dell'altare dell'incenso» Luc. 1,11. Giustamente apparisce un Angelo nel tempio, presso all'altare e dal lato destro; annunziando egli e la venuta del vero sacerdote, e il mistero del sacrificio universale, e la gioia del dono celeste. Poiché come per la sinistra i presenti, così per la destra si designano spesso i beni eterni. Perciò si canta in lode della sapienza: «Lunghezza di giorni alla sua destra; e alla sua sinistra ricchezze e gloria» Prov. 3,16. L'Angelo conforta Zaccaria tremante, perché com'è della fragilità umana turbarsi alla vista d'una creatura spirituale, così è della bontà degli Angeli rassicurare subito e confortare i mortali sbigottiti alla loro presenza. Come al contrario è della ferocia diabolica d'incutere sempre più orrore in coloro che vedono spaventati dalla loro presenza, la quale in nessun modo si vince meglio che colla fede intrepida.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Or avvenne che mentre Zaccaria faceva il suo turno d'ufficiatura dinanzi a Dio,
* Gli apparve l'Angelo Gabriele ritto alla destra dell'altare dell'incenso.
℣. Allorché secondo il rito del sacerdozio gli toccò in sorte d'entrare nel santuario del Signore per offrirvi l'incenso.

Benedizione. Cristo ci doni le gioie della vita eterna.

Lettura 5
L'Angelo, dicendo la sua preghiera essere stata esaudita, promette subito una prole dalla moglie. Non già ch'egli, il quale era entrato per far l'oblazione per il popolo, lasciati i voti di tutti, abbia potuto pregare per avere dei figli, tanto più che nessuno domanda ciò che dispera di ricevere. Ed egli ben conscio della sua età e della sterilità della moglie, disperava talmente di aver dei figli, che non credeva neppure all'Angelo che glielo prometteva. Il dire dunque «La tua preghiera è stata esaudita», s'intende della preghiera di lui per la redenzione del popolo; «E la tua moglie ti darà un figlio » mostra l'economia della stessa redenzione, come cioè il figlio che sarebbe nato da Zaccaria, avrebbe preparato come un araldo la via al Redentore di quel popolo. L'aver dunque detto a Zaccaria che la sua preghiera per il popolo era stata esaudita, insegna secondo qual ordine questo stesso popolo deve essere salvato e reso perfetto, facendo cioè penitenza alla predicazione di Giovanni e credendo a Cristo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. L'Angelo Gabriele discese a Zaccaria e gli disse:
* « Non temere, perché è stata esaudita la tua preghiera, e tua moglie Elisabetta ti darà un figlio, e gli metterai nome Giovanni.
℣. Zaccaria al vederlo ebbe paura, e lo prese lo spavento: ma l'Angelo gli disse.

Lettura 6
Zaccaria, dubitando per la grandezza di tali promesse, domandò un segno per poterci credere, mentre la sola vista o discorso dell'Angelo dovevano essergli sufficienti come segno. Ond'è che porta la meritata pena della sua diffidenza restando muto, e la stessa mutezza diventa per lui e il segno che ha domandato per credere e la giusta pena della sua incredulità. E si deve comprendere che se simili promesse le avesse fatte un uomo, egli avrebbe potuto domandare impunemente un segno; ma, promettendole un Angelo, non è più permesso di dubitare. E questi dà il segno richiesto, perché, avendo quegli parlato per emettere un dubbio, ora, divenuto muto, impari a credere. Dove è da notare, che l'Angelo afferma e di starsi davanti a Dio, e d'essere mandato a portare tal nuova a Zaccaria; perché anche quando vengono a noi gli Angeli, adempiono così al ministero esterno da non interrompere mai la contemplazione interna. Sono dunque mandati e rimangono davanti a Dio, perché, sebbene lo spirito angelico sia limitato, però il sommo spirito, ch'è Dio stesso, non ha limiti. Gli Angeli pertanto, anche quando sono mandati, rimangono dinanzi a lui, perché, ovunque vanno, essi si muovono in lui. - La festa di san Gabriele Arcangelo fu estesa da Papa Benedetto XV a tutta la Chiesa.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Omelia 1 sopra Missus est, n. 2 VII Lezione
Non credo trattarsi qui di uno di quegli Angeli di minore dignità che vengono spesso sulla terra a compiervi una missione per qualsiasi motivo. Ciò risulta chiaramente dal suo nome, che vuol dire Fortezza di Dio; e perché egli è detto mandato non da un altro spirito, probabilmente inferiore (come avviene d'ordinario), ma da Dio medesimo. Perciò è posto: Da Dio. O anche si dice: Da Dio, perché non sembri che Dio, prima di rivelare il suo disegno alla Vergine, lo comunicasse ad alcuni degli spiriti beati, fuorché al solo Gabriele; il quale, solo, fra i suoi compagni di gloria, fu giudicato degno di portare un tal nome ed un tal messaggio.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Fu mandato l'Angelo Gabriele a Maria Vergine sposata a Giuseppe, ad annunziarle il mistero: e la Vergine si spaventò al chiarore,

E il nome ben s'accorda col messaggio. A chi conveniva meglio infatti di annunziare il Cristo, la fortezza di Dio, che a quello che ha l'onore d'averne simile il nome? E che è la fortezza se non la virtù? Non sembri poi indegno o non conveniente che il Signore e il nunzio abbiano ugual nome : perché se simile è il nome di tutti due, non però n'è simile il motivo. Infatti in una maniera Cristo si nomina fortezza o virtù di Dio, e in un'altra l'Angelo. Ché l'Angelo lo è solo nominalmente, ma Cristo lo è anche sostanzialmente.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Godi, Maria Vergine, perché sola hai distrutto tutte l'eresie:
* Tu che hai creduto alle parole dell'Arcangelo Gabriele, e come Vergine hai dato alla luce un Dio-uomo, così dopo il parto sei rimasta Vergine inviolata.

Cristo si chiama ed è la fortezza di Dio, lui che sopravvenendo più forte del forte armato, che soleva custodire in pace la sua casa, lo debellò col suo braccio; e così gli strappò le spoglie della schiavitù. L'Angelo poi è chiamato fortezza di Dio, o perché ebbe l'ufficio d'annunziare la venuta di questa stessa fortezza, o perché doveva rassicurare una Vergine per natura timida, semplice e pudica, affinché non si spaventasse per la novità del miracolo il che fece dicendo: «Non temere. Maria, hai trovato grazia presso Dio » Luc. 1,30. Ben a ragione dunque Gabriele è scelto a questo ufficio; anzi, perché ha ricevuta questa missione, giustamente egli è designato con tal nome.

Exposition on Luke 1:11-20
The Angel appeared to Zacharias in the sanctuary of the temple at the right side of the altar of incense. Which same was fitting, thus: he appeared in the sanctuary because he came to proclaim sacrifice; and at the right side thereof, to indicate how joyous was the honour about to be bestowed on mankind by the heavenly gift. The right side is the side of honour, and therefore words indicating a position at the right hand are often used to signify an eternal good, and by the same token, to be at the left side doth sometimes signify only present good. As for example where the Book of Proverbs singeth thus in praise of wisdom: Length of days in in her right hand, and in her left hand riches and honour. First of all the Angel comforteth the trembling Zacharias. Fear not, saith he. For just as it is natural for human frailty to fear spiritual manifestations, so it is natural for Angels to comfort with good words the mortals that be in this wise fearful. Contrariwise, when the devil perceiveth that his audacious manifestations do frighten, he proceedeth to frighten as much as he can, and that with an increasing fearsomeness. There is no better way to overcome his workings than by a courageous faith.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Next, the Angel saith that the prayer of Zacharias was heard, and then straightway promiseth that the wife of Zacharias should bear a child. We are not to understand that he had been praying for the birth of a son whilst he was offering the sacrifice according to the liturgy of that time, for we are told that he had given up hope of a son, and no one prayeth for that which he hath no hope of obtaining. Yea, so hopeless was he of ever having children of his own, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both now well stricken in years, that he did not even believe the Angel's promise. Therefore the words of the Angel: Thy prayer is heard: refer to the redemption of the people, for which Zacharias had prayed in the pleading of the sacrifice. And the words: Thy wife shall bear a son: do shew the manner of that redemption, for he addeth that the son of Zacharias shall go before the Redeemer as a herald, to make ready his way amongst the people. Thus, in this saying that the prayer of supplication offered by Zacharias was heard of God, the Angel sheweth in what manner the people can be brought to salvation and perfection; namely, by repentance at the preaching of John, whereby they are to be led to faith in Christ.

But Zacharias hesitateth because of the sublime things which have been promised. Wherefore he asketh for a sign, that he may believe, albeit the coming of the Angel and his words of promise ought to have been a sufficient sign. Hence he was stricken dumb as a just penalty for his slowness of belief: to be dumb was both a sign to stir him up to the faith which he sought, and the penance which he deserved for his unbelief. We may thus understand that if a man of earth had promised such things, it would be lawful to seek for a sign, but that when an Angel is sent from heaven to give God's promise, there should have been no occasion for doubt. And yet the Angel giveth the desired sign, so that he who spake from disbelief may learn from silence to believe. Note that the Angel saith: I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God, and am sent to speak unto thee these glad tidings. Doubtless when Angels come to us they fulfill this active and outward ministry in such a way that they yet do always remain in God's presence by contemplation. Wherefore, they stand in his presence even though they be sent from him on a mission. An Angel is a created spirit, and therefore hath many limitations. But God hath no limitations, and is everywhere. Thus when he sendeth his Angels from his presence, they yet do stand therein, for whithersoever they go on a mission, they go in him. - This Feast of the Archangel Gabriel was extended to the universal Church by Pope Benedict XV.

Consider that this Angel was not one of lesser rank, even though such are, on one account or another, often sent on embassies to this earth. That he was an Angel of greater rank is indicated by his name which signifieth: Strength of God: and by the fact that he was sent, not by some Angel perhaps more excellent than he (as is usual), but from God himself. Therefore for this reason it is said: From God. Or, it might be for another reason, namely, lest it should be thought that God had discourteously revealed his counsel to any of the blessed spirits, except only the Archangel Gabriel, before he did so to the Virgin. For Gabriel alone was found so eminent among his compeers as to be held worthy both of such a name and message.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. The Angel Gabriel was sent to Mary, the virgin espoused to Joseph, and the Virgin was afraid of the light.

Neither do his name and his message disagree. For whom did it more behove to announce Christ, who is the Power of God, than him who is honoured by a like name? For what else is power than strength? Christ is called the power or strength of God in a very different sense from that in which this appellation is given to the Angel. In the Angel it is but a name.
