Come prenderlo s'egli ancora non voleva? Ma siccome non potevano prenderlo nolente, la loro missione non poté che testimoniare dei suoi insegnamenti. E che cosa egli insegnava? «Disse dunque Gesù: Per poco tempo ancora sono con voi» Joann. 7,33. Quello che volete fare ora, lo farete; ma non adesso, perché adesso non voglio. Perché adesso ancora non voglio? «Perché per poco tempo ancora sono con voi, poi me ne andrò a colui che mi ha mandato». Debbo compiere la mia missione, e così giungere alla mia passione.

℟. Dio mio, salvami dalla mano del peccatore: e dalla mano del violator della legge, e dell'iniquo :

Queste parole predicono già la sua risurrezione: (i Giudei) infatti non lo vollero riconoscere allorché era presente (fra loro), e lo cercarono dopo, quando videro la moltitudine credere in lui. Difatti si operarono grandi prodigi anche al tempo della risurrezione e ascensione del Signore. I discepoli fecero allora dei grandi miracoli: ma era lui (che operava) per mezzo loro, come (ne avea operati) per se medesimo, avendo egli detto loro: «Senza di me voi non potete far nulla» Joann. 15,5. Quando lo zoppo, che sedeva alla porta del tempio, si levò alla voce di Pietro sui suoi piedi, e camminò, tutti ne stupirono, ma allora Pietro dichiaro, ch'egli l'aveva guarito in virtù non di un suo potere, sibbene di colui che essi avevano ucciso. Molti compunti gli dissero: «Che dobbiamo fare?» Act. 2,34.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Quelli che insidiavano all'anima mia sì son concertati insieme, dicendo: Dio l'ha abbandonato.
* Inseguitelo, e afferratelo, poiché non c'è chi lo liberi: Dio mio, non allontanarti da me: Dio mio, volgiti in mio aiuto.
℣. Tutti i miei nemici contro di me tramavano sciagure: una cosa iniqua hanno stabilita contro di me dicendo.

Essi si videro sotto il. peso d'un delitto enorme di empietà, avendo ucciso colui che avrebbero dovuto venerare e adorare: e pareva loro impossibile di poterlo espiare. Difatti era un delitto enorme, la cui vista li gettava nella disperazione: ma essi non dovevano disperare, perché il Signore sospeso alla croce s'era degnato di pregare per loro. Infatti aveva detto: «Padre, perdona loro, perché non sanno quel che fanno» Luc. 33,34. Fra molti che gli erano estranei, (Gesù) distingueva quelli che gli appartenevano: e già domandava il perdono di quelli che ancora l'insultavano. Perché egli non considerava ch'essi lo facevano morire, bensì che egli moriva per essi.
