In ómnibus, dilectíssimi, solemnitátibus christiánis non ignorámus paschále sacraméntum esse præcípuum: cui condígne et cóngrue suscipiéndo, totíus quidem nos témporis institúta refórmant: sed devotiónem nostram præséntes vel máxime dies éxigunt, quos illi sublimíssimo divínæ misericórdiæ sacraménto scimus esse contíguos. In quibus mérito a sanctis Apóstolis per doctrínam Spíritus Sancti majóra sunt ordináta jejúnia: ut per commúne consórtium crucis Christi, étiam nos áliquid in eo quod propter nos gessit, agerémus, sicut Apóstolus ait: Si compátimur, et conglorificábimur. Certa atque secúra est exspectátio promíssæ beatitúdinis, ubi est participátio Domínicæ passiónis.

Non ignoriamo, o dilettissimi, che il mistero pasquale occupa il primo posto fra tutte le solennità cristiane: il nostro modo di vivere durante l'anno intiero deve, certo, colla riforma dei nostri costumi disporci a celebrarlo in maniera degna e conveniente: ma i giorni presenti soprattutto esigono la nostra devozione, perché sappiamo che essi sono prossimi a quello in cui celebriamo il mistero più sublime della divina misericordia. Con ragione e per ispirazione dello Spirito Santo i santi Apostoli hanno ordinato in questi giorni digiuni più rigorosi: affinché con una partecipazione comune alla croce di Cristo, anche noi facciamo qualche cosa che ci unisca a ciò ch'egli ha fatto per noi, siccome dice l'Apostolo: «Se soffriamo con lui, saremo glorificati con lui» Rom. 8,7. Dove è la partecipazione alla passione del Signore, è certa e sicura l'aspettazione della felicità che ci è promessa.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Non c'è alcuno, o dilettissimi, cui si neghi d'essere associato a questa gloria, e la condizione del tempo non l'ostacola, quasi che nella tranquillità e nella pace non ci sia occasione di praticar la virtù. E l'Apostolo l'ha predetto dicendo: «Tutti quelli che vogliono vivere piamente in Cristo, soffriranno persecuzione» 2Tim. 3,12: e perciò la prova e la persecuzione non mancheranno mai, se non verrà meno giammai la pratica della pietà. Difatti il Signore esortando i suoi (Apostoli) dice: «Chi non prende la sua croce, e mi segue, non è degno di me» Matth. 10,38. Questa parola, non possiamo dubitarlo, riguarda non solo i discepoli di Cristo, ma tutti i fedeli, la Chiesa intera, la quale, nella sua universalità, ascoltava le condizioni della salute nella persona di quelli che allora erano presenti.

E come è dovere di tutto il corpo il vivere piamente, così l'obbligo di portare la croce è di tutti i tempi: e non senza motivo si consiglia a ciascuno di portare la sua croce, essendo che ognuno n'è caricato in maniera e misura a lui propria. La persecuzione è designata con una sola parola, ma esiste più d'una causa di combattimento: e ordinariamente c'è a temere più da uno che tende insidie di nascosto, che da un avversario dichiarato. Il beato Giobbe, che aveva appreso che i beni e i mali si succedono in questo mondo, diceva con pietà e verità: «Non è forse una tentazione la vita dell'uomo sulla terra?» Job. 7,1 Non sono soltanto i dolori e i supplizi del corpo che assalgono l'anima fedele, perché essa è minacciata da grave malattia, ancorché tutte le membra rimangano perfettamente sane, se si lascia rammollire dai piaceri del senso. Ma siccome «la carne ha desideri contrari allo spirito, e lo spirito contrari alla carne» Gal. 5,17, l'anima ragionevole è munita del soccorso della croce di Cristo, onde non acconsenta ai desideri colpevoli allorché è tentata, perché è trafitta e trattenuta dai chiodi della continenza e dal timor di Dio.

Omelia 18 sul Vangelo
Considerate, fratelli carissimi, la mansuetudine di Dio. (Il Salvatore) era venuto a togliere i peccati e diceva: «Chi di voi mi convincerà di peccato?» Joann. 8.46. Egli non disdegna di mostrare con ragionamento che non è peccatore, lui, che in virtù della sua divinità poteva giustificare i peccatori. Le parole che seguono sono veramente terribili: «Chi è da Dio, ascolta le parole di Dio: e perciò voi non le ascoltate, perché non siete da Dio». Se dunque chi è da Dio intende le parole di Dio, e se chi non è da Dio non può intenderle: ognuno si domandi se l'orecchio del suo cuore percepisca le parole di Dio; e conoscerà a chi appartiene. La Verità ordina di desiderare la patria celeste, di calpestare i desideri della carne, di fuggire la gloria del mondo, di non desiderare l'altrui, di largheggiare del proprio.

Ci sono alcuni, che non si degnano di ascoltare neppure colle orecchie del corpo i divini precetti. E ci sono di quelli, che li ascoltano sì colle orecchie del corpo, ma senza aver nell'animo alcun desiderio di praticarli. E ci sono di quelli, che ascoltano volentieri le parole di Dio, al punto da esserne tocchi fino alle lacrime, ma appena passato questo momento di emozione ritornano al peccato. Tutti questi certo non ascoltano le parole di Dio, perché non cercano di metterle in pratica colle opere. Richiamate dunque, fratelli carissimi, la vostra vita innanzi agli occhi della vostra anima, e imprimete profondamente nei vostri cuori il sentimento di timore che devono ispirare queste parole pronunziate dalla stessa Verità: «Per questo voi non le ascoltate, perché non siete da Dio» Joann. 8,47.

Ascoltiamo ciò che rispose il Signore dopo di aver ricevuto simile oltraggio. «Io non ho alcun demonio, ma perché onoro il Padre mio, voi mi oltraggiate» Joann. 8,49. Ora Samaritano significa custode: ed egli è veramente questo custode, di cui il Salmista dice: «Se il Signore non custodisce la città, indarno vegliano quelli che la custodiscono» Ps. 126,1: e di lui si dice in Isaia: «Sentinella, che è stato questa notte? sentinella, che è stato questa notte?» Is. 21,11 ecco perché il Signore non volle rispondere: Non sono un Samaritano; ma: «Io non ho alcun demonio». Due cose gli erano state rimproverate: egli negò l'una, e consentì sull'altra tacendo.

9th for Lent
Dearly beloved brethren, we know that of all the solemn Feasts which are kept by Christians the Passover is the chief. The ordinances of the whole rest of the year are ordered to the end of preparing us to come to this one in worthy and meet manner. But these days, which now are, are they which ought most especially to stir up a godly mind in us, seeing that they are they which are nearest to that most glorious mystery of God's mercy. In these days the holy Apostles, taught by the Holy Ghost, ordered the chiefest store of Fasting, that we, sharing His Cross with Christ, might, albeit we are what we are, in Him, do some of the same things which He did for our sakes, and so realise the saying of the Apostle: “If we suffer with Him, we shall be also glorified together.” Rom. viii. 17. He that is partaker of the sufferings 2 Cor. i. 7 of the Lord hath a sure and certain hope of that blessedness which He hath promised unto us.

Dearly beloved brethren, there is no man to whom the state of the age in which he liveth denieth a share in this glory of partaking, first the sufferings, and then the triumph and joy, of Christ. It is not as though this time of peace were barren in occasions of valour. The Apostle giveth us this warning All that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. 2 Tim. iii. 12. And therefore, as long as godliness is watchful, persecution will never be asleep. The Lord Himself saith in one of His own exhortations He that taketh not his cross, and followeth after Me, is not worthy of Me. Matth. x. 38. And we must not doubt that these words of Christ apply not only to His immediate disciples, to whom He spoke them, but belong to all the faithful and to the whole Church, who, whosoever be the believers of whom she is for the time composed on earth, heareth in these words the way to be saved which her Lord hath appointed for them.

As then, it is the duty of the whole body of the Church to live godly, so is it her right at all times to be a-bearing of her Master's Cross, and that not only in her general body, but individually in the person of each one of her members, who differ every one from another in the way in which they have to carry it, and the shape in which it is laid upon them. The one common name for all their carrying of the Cross is persecution, but the manner of his wrestling is special to each; and there is often more danger in the ambush than in the pitched field of battle. Blessed Job, who had tried both the goods and the ills of this world, said: Is not the life of man upon earth a warfare? vii. 1. The attack upon the faithful soul arrayeth itself not alone in bodily torture and punishment; yea, when the limbs are sound enough, fearful is the ravage that threateneth us when the lusts of the flesh unman us. But when the flesh lusteth against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh Gal. iv. 7 the reasonable mind findeth her reinforcement in the helpful Cross of Christ, and though she be lured by foul cravings, yet refuseth to give her consent, for God maketh her pure thoughts to tremble for fear of Him. Ps. cxviii. 120.

Dearly beloved brethren, consider the gentleness of God. He came to take away sins, and He saith Which of you convinceth Me of sin? He Who, through the might of His Godhead, was able to justify sinners, was contented to show by argument that He was not Himself a sinner. But exceeding dread is that which followeth. He that is of God heareth God's words; ye, therefore, hear them not, because ye are not of God. If, then, whosoever is of God heareth God's words, and whosoever is not of Him cannot hear His words, let each one ask himself if he, in the ear of his heart, heareth God's words, and understandeth Whose words they are? The Truth commandeth us to long for a Fatherland in heaven, to bridle the lusts of the flesh, to turn away from the glory of the world, to seek no man's goods, and to give away our own.
