Lettura 4
Benedetto, nato a Norcia da nobile famiglia ed istruito a Roma nelle discipline liberali, per darsi interamente a Gesù Cristo si ritirò in una profonda spelonca presso un luogo detto Subiaco ; nella quale si mantenne nascosto per tre anni senza che lo sapesse altri che il monaco Romano, che gli forniva il necessario alla vita. Un giorno avendo il diavolo eccitata in lui una violenta tentazione d'impurità, si ravvoltolò fra delle spine finché, tutto lacero nel corpo, il senso della voluttà fu soffocato nel dolore. Ma la fama della sua santità già sparsasi lungi da quella spelonca, alcuni monaci si misero sotto la sua condotta: non potendo però sopportare le sue riprensioni meritate per la loro vita licenziosa, risolsero di mettergli del veleno nella bevanda. Ma nel presentargli da bere, egli con un segno di croce mandò in frantumi il vaso e, abbandonato il monastero, ritornò nella solitudine.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano
* e gli procurò eterna gloria.

Ma siccome venivano a lui ogni giorno molti discepoli, edificò dodici monasteri, munendoli di santissime leggi. Poi si portò a Cassino, dove spezzò un idolo d'Apollo che ancora vi si venerava, ne rovesciò l'altare e bruciò i boschetti; e vi costrusse un tempietto a san Martino e una cappella a san Giovanni, ed istruì i terrazzani e gli abitanti nel la religione cristiana. Ond'è che Benedetto cresceva ogni dì più nella grazia divina, così da predire anche l'avvenire con spirito profetico. Il che avendo appreso Totila re dei Goti, per provare se la cosa era veramente così, si fece precedere dal suo scudiero con vesti e seguito reale perché si fingesse il re. Ma appena Benedetto l'ebbe Visto; Deponi, figlio, disse, deponi ciò che porti, perché non è tuo. A Totila poi predisse la sua entrata in Roma, la traversata del mare, e la morte dopo nove anni.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,
* e l'ha incoronato alle porte del paradiso.

Grande fiducia! Pietro era pescatore, non era mai stato ricco, si guadagnava il cibo col lavoro delle mani; e tuttavia dice con gran sicurezza: «Abbiamo abbandonato tutto». E siccome non basta solo abbandonare, aggiunge ciò che è perfetto: «E ti abbiamo seguito». Abbiamo fatto quello che hai comandato: che cosa ci darai dunque per ricompensa? E Gesù disse loro : «In verità vi dico: voi che mi avete seguito, quando nella rigenerazione il Figlio dell'uomo siederà sul trono della sua maestà, siederete anche voi su dodici troni a giudicare le dodici tribù d'Israele». Non disse: Voi che avete lasciato ogni cosa, poiché questo lo fece anche il filosofo Crates, e molti altri disprezzarono le ricchezze, ma disse: «Voi che mi avete seguito»; il che è proprio degli apostoli e dei credenti.

«Nella rigenerazione, quando il Figlio dell'uomo si sarà assiso sul trono della sua maestà - quando anche i morti risorgeranno incorrotti dalla corruzione - siederete anche voi sui seggi dei giudici a condannare le dodici tribù Israele», perché, mentre voi credeste, esse non vollero credere. «E chi avrà lasciato la casa, o i fratelli, o le sorelle, o il padre, o la madre, o la moglie, o i figli, o i campi per amor del mio nome, riceverà il centuplo e possederà la vita eterna». Questo passo è in armonia con l'altra affermazione del Salvatore che dice: «Non sono venuto a portare la pace, ma la spada. Da questa affermazione alcuni prendono occasione per sostenere che dopo la risurrezione ci sarà un periodo di mille anni nel quale, dicono, riceveremo il centuplo di tutto ciò che abbiamo lasciato e poi la vita eterna; non comprendendo che, se per tutte le altre cose la ricompensa è conveniente, per quanto riguarda la moglie, sarebbe una vergogna che colui che ne ha lasciata una per il Signore in futuro ne ricevesse cento. Questo dunque è il significato: chi avrà abbandonato per il Salvatore i beni carnali, ne riacquisterà di spirituali; e paragonare il valore di questi a quello dei primi, sarà come paragonare il numero cento ad un piccolo numero.

Benedict was born of a noble family at Norcia, about the year of our Lord 480, and studied letters at Rome. Desiring to give himself altogether to Christ Jesus, he betook himself to a very deep cave at the place now called Subiaco. In this place he lay hid for three years, unknown to all except the monk Romanus, by means of whom he received the necessaries of life. While he was in the cave at Subiaco, the devil one day assailed him with an extraordinary storm of impure temptation, and to get it under, he rolled himself in brambles till his whole body was lacerated, and the sting of pain drove out the sallies of lust. At last the fame of his holiness spread itself abroad from the desert, and some monks came to him for guidance, but the looseness of their lives was such that they could not bear his exhortations, and they plotted together to poison him in his drink. When they gave him the cup, he made the sign of the Cross over it, whereupon it immediately broke, and Benedict left that monastery, and retired to a desert place alone.

He grew in the grace of God day by day, so that being endowed with the spirit of prophecy he foretold things to come. When Totila, King of the Goths, heard of it, and would see whether it really were so, he sent his Spatharius before him, with the kingly ensigns and attendance, and feigning himself to be Totila. But as soon as Benedict saw him he said: My son, put off that which thou wearest, for it is not thine. To Totila himself he foretold that he would go to Rome, would cross the sea, and would die after nine years.

I take it that these words of the Lord: “I am the Light of the world” are sufficiently clear to all men who have eyes which see that Light. At the same time, such men as have no eyes except those which are in their bodies, are surprised to find our Lord Jesus Christ saying, “I am the Light of the world”. And that we might not want somebody to say, “Is our Lord Jesus Christ, then, the same sun that riseth and setteth every day?” There have actually been heretics who did say it. The Manicheans believed that that sun which we see with our bodily eyes, and to see which is plain and common to beasts as well as men, was the Lord Christ.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow we keep the feast of the holy Confessor Cyril, Bishop of Jerusalem, who suffered many things from the Arians for the faith's sake. He was several times driven from his see, but at length fell asleep in peace, illustrious for the glory of holiness. The Ecumenical Council of Constantinople, in writing to Pope Damasus, gave a noble witness to the purity of his faith. Mention hath been made of him on the 18th day of this present month of March.
