Desideráta nobis, dilectíssimi, et univérso optábilis mundo adest festívitas Domínicæ passiónis, quæ nos inter exsultatiónes spirituálium gaudiórum silére non pátitur. Quia etsi diffícile est, de eádem solemnitáte sǽpius digne aptéque dissérere: non est tamen líberum sacerdóti in tanto divínæ misericórdiæ sacraménto fidélibus pópulis subtráhere sermónis offícium: cum ipsa matéria ex eo quod est ineffábilis, fandi tríbuat facultátem: nec possit defícere quod dicátur, dum numquam potest satis esse quod dícitur. Sermone 11 sulla Passione del Signore
La solennità della passione del Signore, desiderata da noi, fratelli dilettissimi, e desiderabile al mondo intero è giunta, ed essa non ci permette di starcene silenziosi tra l'esultanza delle gioie spirituali (che spande in noi). Perché sebbene sia difficile di parlare spesso in maniera degna e giusta di tale solennità; tuttavia un vescovo non è libero di privare il popolo fedele del discorso che gli deve su questo gran mistero della divina misericordia: tanto più che. la stessa materia per ciò stesso ch'è ineffabile fornisce abbondantemente di che parlare; né possono mancare le parole dal momento che non se ne potrà dire mai abbastanza. La debolezza umana si riconosca dunque sopraffatta dalla gloria di Dio, e sempre incapace di spiegare le opere della sua misericordia. La nostra intelligenza faccia sforzi, il nostro spirito resti in forse, ci venga pur meno l'espressione: è bene per noi (vedere) come quel che di più alto possiamo avere della maestà del Signore, è ben poca cosa paragonata alla realtà.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Avendo detto il profeta: «Cercate il Signore, e siate forti, cercate sempre la sua faccia» Ps. 104,4, nessuno deve presumere d'aver trovato quello che cerca, affinché, cessando d' andare avanti, non rinunci ancora ad avvicinarsi. Fra tutte le opere di Dio, che l'ammirazione umana si sforza di contemplare, qual altra tocca tanto l'anima nostra, e sorpassa la portata della nostra intelligenza, quanto la passione del Salvatore? Il quale per sciogliere il genere umano dai lacci d'una mortifera prevaricazione, occultò la potenza della sua maestà al diavolo che incrudeliva, e non gli mostrò che l'infermità della nostra bassezza umana. Perché se questo crudele e superbo nemico avesse potuto conoscere il disegno della misericordia di Dio, avrebbe cercato piuttosto di addolcire gli animi dei Giudei, che accenderli d'un odio ingiusto, per non perdere, perseguitando la libertà di chi non gli doveva niente, i suoi diritti su tutti quelli che (per il peccato) erano diventati suoi schiavi.

Il diavolo fu dunque ingannato dalla sua malignità, fece soffrire al Figlio di Dio un supplizio ch'è divenuto il rimedio di tutti i figli degli uomini. Sparse il sangue innocente che doveva essere il prezzo della riconciliazione del mondo, e la (nostra) bevanda. Il Signore soffrì (il genere di morte) che s'era scelto, conforme al disegno della sua volontà. Permise a dei furiosi che mettessero su di lui l'empie lor mani: le quali, nel compiere un crimine enorme, han servito all'esecuzione dei disegni del Redentore. La tenerezza del suo amore era sì grande anche verso i suoi uccisori, che supplicando il Padre dalla croce, gli domandò non di vendicarlo, ma di perdonar loro.

Libr. 9 su Luca
È da notare che il Signore, abbandonati i Giudei, sale al tempio, egli che doveva abitare nei cuori dei Gentili. Perché il vero tempio è quello ove il Signore è adorato, non secondo la lettera, ma in ispirito. Il tempio di Dio è quello, che s'è stabilito non su una struttura di pietre, ma sulla connessione delle verità della fede. Egli abbandona dunque quelli che l'odiano: e sceglie quelli che devono amarlo. Perciò andò al monte Oliveto, per piantare colla sua divina virtù queste giovani piante d'olivo che hanno per madre la celeste Gerusalemme. Su questo monte egli stesso è il celeste agricoltore: così che tutti quelli che sono piantati nella casa di Dio, possano dire, ciascuno: «Ma io son come un olivo fruttifero nella casa del Signore» Ps. 51,8.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore è con me come un forte guerriero: perciò m'han perseguitato, e non la poterono capire: Signore, tu provi le reni ed i cuori:

Esso è colui per cui ascendiamo, ed a cui ascendiamo. Esso è la porta, esso è la via; (la porta) che si apre, ed è lui che l'apre: a cui picchiano quelli che vogliono entrare, ed è lui che adorano quelli che hanno meritato d'entrare. Egli era dunque in un villaggio, e c'era un asinello legato con un'asina: il quale non poteva essere sciolto che per ordine del Signore. La mano d'un Apostolo lo scioglie. Tali sono le azioni, tale è la vita, tale la grazia. Sii tale anche tu, onde possa sciogliere quelli che sono legati.

Consideriamo ora chi sono quelli che, dopo essere stati convinti di peccato, furono cacciati dal paradiso, e relegati in un villaggio. Ed osserva in qual maniera la vita richiama quelli che la morte aveva esiliati. Leggiamo in Matteo, ch'egli ordinò si sciogliesse un'asina e il suo puledro: affinché come l'uno e l'altro sesso era sta espulso (dal paradiso) nella persona dei nostri progenitori, così mostrasse col simbolo dei due animali ch'egli veniva a richiamare i due sessi. L'asina dunque figurava Eva colpevole: e il puledro designava la generalità del popolo Gentile: e perciò egli siede sul puledro dell'asina. Giustamente è detto che nessuno l'aveva ancora cavalcato: perché nessuno, prima di Cristo, aveva chiamato i popoli della gentilità ad entrare nella Chiesa. In Marco difatti si ha: «Su cui ancora non è montato alcuno» Marc.11,2.

Second on the Passion of the Lord.
Dearly beloved brethren, the jubilant and triumphal day which ushereth in the commemoration of the Lord's Passion is come; even that day for which we have longed so much, and for whose yearly coming the whole world may well look. Shouts of spiritual exultation are ringing, and suffer not that we should be silent. It is indeed hard to preach often on the same Festival, and that always meetly and rightly, but a Priest is not free, when we celebrate so great and mysterious an out-pouring of God's mercy, to leave his faithful people without the service of a discourse. Nay, that his subject-matter is unspeakable should in itself make him eloquent, since where enough can never be said, there must needs ever be somewhat to say. Let man's weakness, then, fall down before the glory of God, and acknowledge herself ever too feeble to unfold all the works of His mercy. We may jade our emotions, break down in our understanding, and fail in our speech it is good for us, that even what we truly feel in presence of the Divine Majesty is but little, (compared to the vastness of the subject.)
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

He leaveth behind Him such as hate Him, and getteth Him to such as will love Him. And therefore cometh He unto the Mount of Olives that He may plant upon the heights of grace those young olive-branches, whose Mother is the Jerusalem which is above. Upon this mountain standeth He, the Heavenly Husbandman, that all they which be planted in the House of the Lord may be able each one to say: “But I am like a fruitful olive-tree in the House of God.” Ps. li. 10.

Now, let us consider who they were, who, being convicted of transgression, were banished from their home in the Garden of Eden into a village, and in this thou wilt see how Life called back again them whom death had cast out. The she-ass is a type of our sinful Mother Eve, and the colt of the multitude of the Gentiles; and it was upon the colt that Christ took His seat. A Roma, sulla via Appia, la passione del beato Quirino Tribuno, padre di santa Balbina Vergine, il quale fu battezzato insieme con tutta la famiglia dal beato Alessàndro Papa, che egli teneva in prigione, e, sotto l'Imperatore Adriano, essendo stato consegnato al giudice Aureliano, e persistendo nella confessione della fede, soldato invitto di Cristo, dopo che gli fu tagliata la lingua, fu sospeso sull'eculeo e gli si troncarono le mani e i piedi, e così compì con la spada il combattimento del martirio.
A Salonicco il natale dei santi Martiri Donnino, Vittóre e Compagni.
A Costantinópoli la commemorazione di moltissimi santi Martiri della comunione cattolica, i quali, al tempo di Costànzo, dall'eresiarca Macedónio, dopo essere stati straziati con inaudite sorta di tormenti, furono uccisi. Almighty and everlasting God, Who, of thy tender love towards mankind, hast sent thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ to take upon Him our flesh and to suffer death upon the Cross, that all mankind should follow the example of His great humility; mercifully grant, that we may both follow the example of His patience, and also be made partakers of His resurrection.
Through the same Jesus Christ, thy Son, Our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
