I Giudei, visto Lazzaro risuscitato, e che sì gran miracolo del Signore s'era sparso con tale evidenza e manifestato sì notoriamente da non potersi né dissimulare né negare: guardate che cosa trovarono. «I capi sacerdoti deliberarono d'ammazzare anche Lazzaro» Joann. 12,10. O stolto disegno e cieca crudeltà! Quasi che Cristo Signore, che poté risuscitare quest'uomo morto, non poteva risuscitarlo ucciso! Facendo morir Lazzaro, toglievate forse al Signore il suo potere? Se altra cosa è per voi risuscitare uno morto, altra uno ucciso, ecco che il Signore ha fatto l'uno e l'altro, risuscitò Lazzaro morto e se stesso ucciso.

Il dì seguente, una gran folla, ch'era accorsa alla festa, sentito che Gesù era venuto a Gerusalemme, presero dei rami di palme, e uscirono ad incontrarlo, gridando: Osanna, benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore, il Re d'Israele» Joann. 12,12. I rami delle palme sono le lodi, e l'emblema della vittoria: il Signore infatti doveva vincere la morte morendo lui stesso, e trionfare, col trofeo della croce, del diavolo, principe della morte. Osanna poi è parola di supplica, come vogliono alcuni che conoscono la lingua Ebraica, esprimente piuttosto un sentimento del cuore che un pensiero determinato, quali sono quelle che si dicono interiezioni nella lingua Latina, come quando nel dolore diciamo: ahi; o quando nella gioia diciamo: ah!
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

La folla lo salutava con queste acclamazioni: «Osanna, benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore, il Re d'Israele». Qual tortura non dovea soffrire lo spirito invidioso dei capi dei Giudei allorché tanta moltitudine acclamava Cristo per suo Re? Ma che fu per il Signore essere Re d'Israele? Che gran cosa fu per il Re dei secoli farsi Re degli uomini? Infatti Cristo non fu Re d'Israele per esigere tributo, o per armare di ferro un esercito, e debellare visibilmente i suoi nemici: ma egli è il Re d'Israele per reggere le menti, per averne cura in eterno, per introdurre nel regno dei cieli quelli che in lui credono e sperano e lo amano.

Giovanni, nato a Capistrano nei Peligni e mandato a Perugia per gli studi, fece sì grandi progressi nella dottrina cristiana e nelle arti liberali, che Ladislao, re di Napoli, in considerazione della sua conoscenza del diritto, gli affidò il governo di più città. Ma mentre santamente occupato della cosa pubblica si applica a calmare le agitazioni e a ristabilire la quiete, egli è preso e messo in prigione; donde liberato miracolosamente, professa la regola di Francesco d'Assisi tra i frati Minori. Passato allo studio delle divine scritture, ebbe per maestro san Bernardino da Siena, i cui esempi di virtù imitò egregiamente, particolarmente nel propagare il culto al santissimo nome di Gesù e alla Madre di Dio. Ricusò il vescovado di Aquila, e si distinse massimamente per la austerità della vita, e per numerosissimi scritti che pubblicò per la riforma dei costumi.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano

Datosi con zelo alla predicazione della parola di Dio, percorse quasi tutta l'Italia; nel qual ministero, colla forza del dire e col gran numero di miracoli ricondusse sulla via della salute anime pressoché innumerevoli. Martino V lo designò inquisitore per l'estinzione della setta dei Fraticelli. Designato inquisitore generale in Italia contro Giudei e Saraceni da Nicola II, ne convertì moltissimi alla fede di Cristo. In Oriente stabilì molte cose eccellenti, e nel concilio di Firenze, dove rifulse come un sole, riconciliò gli Armeni colla Chiesa cattolica. Lo stesso Pontefice, a preghiera dell'imperatore Federico III, l'inviò in Germania nunzio della Sede apostolica, perché riconducesse gli eretici alla fede cattolica e gli animi dei principi alla concordia. In Germania e in altre Provincie, con un ministero di sei anni, lavorò meravigliosamente alla gloria di Dio, e ricondusse nel seno della Chiesa colla verità della dottrina e la luce dei miracoli innumerevoli Ussiti, Adamiti, Taboriti e Giudei.

Lettura 6
Avendo Callisto III, pressato specialmente dalle sue istanze, decretato la crociata, Giovanni percorse la Pannonia e altre Provincie, e ora colla parola ora con lettere animò talmente i principi alla guerra santa, che in poco tempo furono arruolati settantamila Cristiani. Si deve principalmente ai suoi consigli e al suo coraggio se si riportò la vittoria di Belgrado, in cui centoventimila Turchi furono fatti a pezzi o messi in fuga. L'annunzio di questa vittoria essendo giunto a Roma il 6 Agosto, lo stesso Callisto a perpetuare la memoria di questo giorno lo consacrò alla festa della Trasfigurazione di Cristo Signore. Colto da grave malattia, e trasportato a Willech, vi fu visitato da molti principi; che esortò a difendere la religione, rendendo santamente l'anima a Dio l'anno della salute 1456. Dio confermò la sua gloria dopo morte con molti miracoli: Alessandro VIII avendoli regolarmente approvati, iscrisse Giovanni nel numero dei Santi l'anno 1690; Leone XIII, due secoli dopo la sua canonizzazione, estese l'Ufficio e la Messa di lui a tutta la Chiesa.

Furono inviati a predicare non cosa di poca importanza, ma una gran cosa, cioè il regno di Dio, per il quale si può intendere la dottrina della verità, secondo quello: «Vi sarà tolto il regno di Dio, e sarà dato a un popolo che ne produca i frutti» Matth. 21,43. Si può anche intendere la grazia dello Spirito Santo, secondo quello: «Il regno di Dio non è cibo e bevanda, ma giustizia, e pace, e gaudio nello Spirito Santo» Rom. 14,17; e più sotto: «Ecco, il regno di Dio è dentro di voi» Luc. 17,21. Si può intendere ancora la gloria eterna, secondo quello: «In verità, chi non rinascerà per mezzo dell'acqua e dello Spirito Santo, non può entrare nel regno di Dio» Joan. 3,5.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:

Lettura 8
In tutte queste maniere gli Apostoli furono inviati a predicare il regno di Dio, cioè la vera dottrina, la divina grazia, e l'eterna gloria. E siccome aveva loro concesso il potere delle guarigioni per autorizzare la loro predicazione, perciò soggiunge: «E guarire gli infermi»; vale a dire gl'invio a predicare, con potere di confermarne la verità, secondo quello: «Quelli poi andarono a predicare dapertutto, colla cooperazione del Signore, il quale confermava la parola coi prodigi che seguivano» Marc. 16,20. Il segno della missione spirituale dato loro per la predicazione, è dunque la guarigione degli uditori dalle malattie dei vizi.

Lettura 9
Ora ci sono tre segni evidenti, che provano se il predicatore è inviato dal Signore a predicare il Vangelo. Il primo, è l'autorità del mittente, tale quella del Pontefice e sopratutto del sommo Pontefice, che tiene il posto di Pietro, anzi di Gesù Cristo; onde chi è inviato da lui, è inviato da Cristo. Il secondo, è lo zelo delle anime nella persona eh' è inviata, quando cioè essa cerca principalmente l'onore di Dio e la salvezza delle anime. Il terzo, è il frutto e la conversione degli uditori. Per il primo, essi sono gl'inviati del Padre, per il secondo del Figlio, per il terzo dello Spirito Santo. Del primo sta scritto: «In luogo dei tuoi padri ti son nati dei figli» Ps. 44,15. Del secondo: «Noi non predichiamo già noi stessi, ma nostro Signore Gesù Cristo» Cor. 4,5. Del terzo: «Vi ho designati perché andiate, e portiate frutto e il frutto vostro sia durevole» Joan 15,16. E chi è inviato così, può ripetere: «Lo spirito del Signore è su di me, perché m'ha unto» Is. 61,1.

He was seeking in righteousness to bring the affairs of these places out of trouble into peace, when he himself was kidnapped and put in chains. From this captivity he marvellously escaped, and then professed himself a Friar Minor under the rule of Francis of Assisi. Here he went forward in the study of divinity, and had as a teacher the holy Bernardine of Sienna, of whom he was one of the most marked followers, especially in spreading abroad the honour paid to the Most Holy Name of Jesus, and to the Mother of God. The bishopric of Aquila was offered to him, but he refused it. He was chiefly known by the hardship of his self-denial, and by the writings which he published in large numbers for the reform of manners.

He devoted himself without ceasing to the preaching of the Word of God, in the which work he travelled throughout nearly all Italy, and by the power of eloquence and of miracles not a few, he recalled souls almost countless into the path of salvation. Martin V. appointed him Inquisitor to stamp out the sect of the Fraticelli. Nicolas V. appointed him InquisitorGeneral in Italy against Judaism and Mohammadanism, and he brought many such misbelievers to believe in Christ. He did much good work in the affairs of the Eastern Church, and at the Council of Florence, wherein he shone like a sun, he brought back the Armenians to the Catholic church. The same Pope Nicolas V., at the request of the Emperor Frederick III., sent him into Germany as Nuncio of the Apostolic See, in order that he might bring back the heretics to the Catholic faith and the minds of the princes to peace and agreement. He did a wonderful work for God's glory during the six years that he laboured in Germany and other countries, and by his teaching of the truth and the striking evidence of his miracles brought back to the bosom of the Church almost countless numbers of Hussites, Adamites, Taborites, and Jews.

It was mainly at the entreaty of John that Calistus III. proclaimed a Crusade, and John hastened about through Pannonia and other provinces, where by his words and his letters he so roused the minds of princes to that holy war, that in a short while seventy thousand Christian soldiers were enrolled. It was mainly through his advice and by his power that victory was gained at Belgrade, when one hundred and twenty thousand Turks were either slain or put to flight. The news of this victory reached Rome upon the sixth day of August, and Pope Calistus thereupon consecrated that day for ever to the solemn commemoration of the transfiguration of the Lord Christ. As John lay sick unto death at Illak, many princes came to see him, and he exhorted them to protect religion. He gave up his soul in holiness to God, (upon the 23rd day of October,) in the year of salvation 1456. God confirmed his glory by many miracles after his death, and when these had been duly proved Alexander VIII. enrolled his name with those of the saints in the year 1690, and two hundred years after his canonization Leo XIII. extended his Office and Mass to the whole Church.

Apostles are so called as a mark of their authority, for this word Apostle signifieth sent, and they were sent out to preach, as it is written: 1 Cor. i. 17, “Christ sent me not to baptize but to preach the gospel.” They were sent to preach not any small thing but a very great thing, even the Kingdom of God, whereby we may understand the teaching of the truth, as it is said, Matth. xxi. 43, The Kingdom of God should be taken from you and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. The Kingdom of God may also be understood to signify the grace of the Holy Ghost, as it is written: Rom. xiv. 17, “The Kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost”; as also it was said: Luke xvii. 21, “The Kingdom of God is within you.” The Kingdom of God may also be understood to signify eternal glory, as it is said: John iii. 5, “Amen, I say unto thee, except a man be born again of water and of the Holy Ghost he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God.”
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. This is he which wrought great wonders before God, and praised the Lord with all his heart.

This power He gave in order to confirm the truth of their preaching, as it is written: Mark xvi. 20, “And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the Word with signs following.” The sign that a preacher is indeed sent forth by the Spirit of God is that they that hear him should be cured of the disease of sin.

When they saw Lazarus who had been raised from the dead, and knew that the miracle which the Lord had worked was so great, spread about by so many witnesses, and so plain and manifest that it could neither be concealed nor denied, they invented an expedient; and see here what it was: “But the chief Priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death.” What stupidity of thought, what blindness of cruelty is here! If the Lord Christ had raised up again a man who had died a natural death, could He not also raise up one that had died by violence? Would killing Lazarus paralyse the Lord? But if ye consider that there is a difference between a man dead of disease, and a man killed, behold, the Lord hath raised up both for He first raised up Lazarus, who had died a natural death, and then Himself, after a violent one.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

March 29th 2026, the 10th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

Palm Sunday, when our Lord Jesus Christ, according to the prophecy of Zacharias, entered into Jerusalem, seated upon the foal of an ass, and was met by the multitude bearing palms.
In Persia, under King Sapor, [in the year 326,] the holy martyrs Jonah and Barachisius. Jonah was pressed under a screw until his bones were broken, and cut through the middle. Barachisius was choked, by pouring boiling pitch into his mouth.
At Balbec, in the Lebanon, [in the year 362,] the holy martyr Cyril the Deacon. The savage Gentiles, under the Emperor Julian the Apostate, cut open his belly, tore out his liver, and ate it.
At Nicomedia, [in the year 303,] suffered the holy martyrs Pastor, Victorinus, and their Companions.
In Africa, [about the year 461,] the holy Confessors Count Armogastes, Masculus the chief player, and Saturus, steward of the king's house, who suffered many and grievous pains and insults for confessing the truth, at the time of the Vandal persecution under the Arian King Genseric, and so finished a course of glorious contention.
In the city of Asti, [in the second century,] the holy martyr Secundus.
In the monastery of Luxeuil, [diocese of Besançon, in the year 625,] the holy Abbot Eustacius, a disciple of holy Columbanus. He was the father of nearly six hundred monks, and was famous not only for the holiness of his life, but also for miracles.
