Lettura 4
Filippo nato a Betsaida, è uno dei dodici Apostoli, che primi furono chiamati da. Cristo Signore: da lui Natanaele apprese ch'era venuto il Messia promesso nella legge, e fu condotto al Signore. Con quanta famigliarità Cristo trattasse con lui, lo dimostra chiaramente il fatto, che i Gentili desiderando di vedere il Salvatore, si rivolsero a Filippo; e il Signore volendo nutrire nella solitudine una moltitudine di persone, parlò così a Filippo: « Dove compreremo il pane, perché questi mangino?» Joann.6,5. Egli, ricevuto lo Spirito Santo, andò nella Scizia, che gli era toccata, per predicarvi il Vangelo, e convertì alla fede cristiana quasi tutta quella gente. Infine, giunto a Gerapoli nella Frigia, vi fu legato alla croce per il nome di Cristo e lapidato il 1° Maggio. Il suo corpo sepolto prima ivi stesso dai Cristiani, fu poi trasportato a Roma e deposto nella basilica dei dodici Apostoli insieme col corpo di san Giacomo Apostolo.

Lettura 5
Giacomo, fratello del Signore, soprannominato il Giusto, fin dai primi anni non bevve mai vino, si astenne dalla carne, non si tagliò mai i capelli, né fece uso di profumi né di bagni. A lui solo era permesso di entrare nel Santo dei santi. Egli portava vesti di lino: e l'assiduità nel pregare gli aveva fatto divenire i ginocchi duri come la pelle d'un cammello. Dopo l'ascensione di Cristo, gli Apostoli lo crearono vescovo di Gerusalemme; ed a lui il Principe degli Apostoli mandò un messo per annunziargli che un Angelo l'aveva liberato dal carcere. Essendo sorta nel concilio di Gerusalemme controversia sulla legge e la circoncisione, Giacomo, seguendo l'opinione di Pietro, fece un discorso ai fratelli per provare la vocazione dei Gentili, e disse doversi scrivere ai fratelli assenti, di non imporre ai Gentili il giogo della legge Mosaica. Di lui parla pure l'Apostolo ai Galati: «Non vidi nessun altro degli Apostoli, all'infuori di Giacomo fratello del Signore» Gal. 1,19.

Lettura 6
Era tanta poi la santità della vita di Giacomo, che gli uomini gareggiavano nel toccare il lembo della sua veste. Giunto all'età di 96 anni, dopo aver governato santissimamente quella Chiesa per 30 anni, predicando intrepidamente il Cristo Figlio di Dio, prima fu assalito con pietre, poi condotto sulla parte più alta del Tempio, donde venne precipitato. Rimasto mezzo morto e colle gambe spezzate, alzava le mani al cielo e pregava Dio per la loro salute con queste parole: «Signore,. perdonali, perché non sanno quel che si fanno». Luc. 23,34. Mentre faceva questa preghiera, gli fu spaccata la testa con un colpo di bastone, e rese l'anima a Dio l'anno settimo di Nerone, e fu sepolto presso il Tempio stesso dov'era stato precipitato, Egli ha scritto una lettera, ch'è una delle sette (Lettere) cattoliche.

Trattato 67 su Giovanni
Fratelli, noi dobbiamo affissare di più il pensiero in Dio, affinché il nostro spirito possa comprendere, per quanto è possibile, le parole del santo Vangelo, che ora abbiamo udite colle nostre orecchie. Il Signore Gesù pertanto dice: «Non si turbi il cuor vostro. Abbiate fede in Dio, e abbiate fede anche in me» Joann. 14,1. Affinché uomini quali erano, non avessero paura della sua morte e rimanessero turbati, li consola dichiarando ch'egli è anche Dio. «Abbiate fede, dice, in Dio, e abbiate fede anche in me» (Ibi). Perché se avete fede in Dio, ne consegue, che dovete aver fede anche in me: conseguenza che non sarebbe legittima, se Cristo non fosse Dio.

Philip was born in the town of Bethsaida, and was one of the first of the twelve Apostles who were called by the Lord Christ. Then Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him: “We have found Him of Whom Moses in the Law, and the Prophets, did write.” And so he brought him to the Lord. How familiarly he was in the company of Christ, is manifest from that which is written: “There were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the Feast the same came therefore to Philip, and desired him, saying: Sir, we would see Jesus.” When the Lord was in the wilderness, and was about to feed a great multitude, He said unto Philip: “Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” Philip, after that he had received the Holy Ghost, took Scythia, by lot, as the land wherein he was to preach the Gospel, and brought nearly all that people to believe in Christ. At the last he came to Hierapolis in Phrygia, and there, for Christ’s Name’s sake, he was fastened to a cross and stoned to death. The day was the first of May. The Christians of Hierapolis buried his body at that place, but it was afterwards brought to Rome and laid in the Basilica of the Twelve Apostles, beside that of the blessed Apostle James.

Reading 5
James, surnamed the Just, the brother of our Lord Jesus Christ, was a Nazarite from the womb. During his whole life he never drank wine or strong drink, never ate meat, never shaved, and never took a bath. He was the only man who was allowed to go into the Holy of Holies. His raiment was always linen. So continually did he kneel in prayer, that the skin of his knees became horny, like a camel’s knees. After Christ was ascended, the Apostles made James Bishop of Jerusalem and even the Prince of the Apostles gave special intelligence to him after that he was delivered from prison by an angel. When in the Council of Jerusalem certain questions were mooted touching the law and circumcision, James, following the opinion of Peter, addressed a discourse to the brethren, wherein he proved the call of the Gentiles, and commanded letters to be sent to such brethren as were absent, that they might take heed not to lay upon the Gentiles the yoke of the Law of Moses. It is of him that the Apostle Paul saith, writing to the Galatians: “Other of the Apostles saw I none, save James the Lord’s brother.”

So great was James’ holiness of life that men strove one with another to touch the hem of his garment. When he was ninety-six years old, and had most holily governed the Church of Jerusalem for thirty years, ever most constantly preaching Christ the Son of God, he laid down his life for the faith. He was first stoned, and afterward taken up on to a pinnacle of the Temple and cast down from thence. His legs were broken by the fall, and he was well-nigh dead, but he lifted up his hands towards heaven, and prayed to God for the salvation of his murderers, saying: “Lord, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” As he said this, one that stood by smote him grievously upon the head with a fuller’s club, and he resigned his spirit to God. He testified in the seventh year of Nero, and was buried hard by the Temple, in the place where he had fallen. He wrote one of the Seven Epistles which are called Catholic.

It behoveth us, my brethren, to have our minds more given toward God, if we would that those words of the Holy Gospel which have just sounded in our ears, should become a living reality for our understandings. The Lord Jesus saith: “Let not your heart be troubled. Ye believe in God, believe also in Me.” Lest, being but men, their heart should be troubled by the fear of death, He strengtheneth them, even by the reminder that He is God. He saith: “Ye believe in God, believe also in Me”, for if ye believe in God, ye must needs believe in Me. And this were not so, if Christ were not God.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Anno del Signore 2026, 2 Maggio, Luna 15

Ad Alessàndria il natale di sant'Atanàsio, Vescovo della stessa città, Confessore e Dottore della Chiesa, celeberrimo per santità e per dottrina. Quasi tutto il mondo pareva avesse congiurato contro di lui. Egli tuttavia, dal tempo di Costantino fino a Valènte, difese valorosamente la fede cattolica contro gl'Imperatori, i Presidi ed innumerevoli Vescovi Ariani, dai quali ebbe a soffrire moltissime insidie, e fu costretto ad andar ramingo per tutto il mondo, senza avere alcun luogo sicuro per nascondersi. Finalmente, ritornato alla sua chiesa, ivi, dopo molti combattimenti e molte corone di pazienza, nell'anno quarantesimosesto del suo sacerdozio passò al Signore, al tempo degli Imperatori Valentiniàno e Valènte.
Così pure a Firènze il natale di sant'Antonino, dell'Ordine dei Predicatori, Vescovo e Confessore, celebre per dottrina e per santità. La sua festa però si celebra il dieci di questo mese.
A Roma i santi Martiri Saturnino, Neópolo, Germano e Celestino, i quali, dopo aver patito molti tormenti, gettati finalmente in carcere, si riposarono nel Signore.
Nello stesso giorno san Vindemiàle, Vescovo e Martire, che insieme coi santi Vescovi Eugènio e Longino, combattendo contro gli Ariani colla dottrina e coi miracoli, da Unnerico, Re dei Vàndali, venne fatto colpire da vari tormenti e finalmente decapitare.

May 2nd 2026, the 15th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Alexandria, in the year 373, holy Athanasius, Pope of that city, most illustrious for his holiness and teaching. Nearly the whole world leagued itself together to persecute him for the Catholic Faith. He fought right stoutly against Emperors, Presidents, and Arian Bishops without number, from the time of the Emperor Constantine until that of the Emperor Valens. To escape their plots he became an outcast upon the face of the wide world, and there was nowhere left where he could hide himself in safety. He returned at last to his own church, and after many contendings and many crowns of long-suffering he passed away to be ever with the Lord, in the 46th year of his priesthood, in the time of the Emperors Valentinian and Valens.
At Rome, the holy martyrs Saturninus, Neopolus, German, and Celestine, who suffered many things, and were at last cast into prison, where they slept in the Lord.

118:98 Col tuo comandamento m'hai fatto più saggio dei miei nemici: * perché in eterno esso mi è presente.
118:99 Ebbi più intelligenza di quelli che mi istruivano: * perché le tue testimonianze sono la mia meditazione.
118:100 Ebbi più intelligenza degli anziani: * perché cercai i tuoi comandamenti.
118:101 Trattenni i miei passi da ogni cattiva strada: * per osservare le tue parole.
118:102 Non deviai dai tuoi giudizi: * perché tu mi hai data una legge.
118:103 Quanto sono dolci al mio palato le tue parole! * più che non è il miele alla mia bocca.
118:104 Dai tuoi comandamenti ebbi intelligenza: * per questo ho in odio qualunque via di iniquità.
