Atanasio d'Alessandria, l'energico difensore della religione cattolica, fu ordinato diacono da Alessandro vescovo d'Alessandria, a cui poi successe. Prima egli l'aveva pure accompagnato al concilio di Nicea; dove per aver confusa l'empietà di Ario, si attirò talmente l'odio degli Ariani, che da quel momento non cessarono più di tendergli insidie. Perciò in un concilio radunato a Tiro, in gran parte di vescovi Ariani, subornarono una donna perché accusasse Atanasio di averle fatto violenza, abusando della sua ospitalità. Introdotto pertanto Atanasio ed insieme con lui il prete Timoteo, il quale, fingendo d'essere Atanasio, disse; Son io, nevvero, o donna, che. ho alloggiato presso di te? io che t'ho violata? A cui ella sfacciatamente; Sì, tu mi hai violentata; ed affermandolo con giuramento, invocava l'autorità dei giudici a vendicare tanta infamia. Così scoperta la frode, la impudenza della donna fu confusa.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Ho trovato il mio servo David e l'ho unto col mio santo olio:

Gli Ariani spacciarono ancora che il vescovo Arsenio era stato assassinato da Atanasio; e, tenendolo nascosto, portano in giudizio la mano d'un morto, accusando Atanasio di averla amputata per servirsene nelle operazioni di magia. Ma Arsenio, fuggitosene di notte, si presentò davanti a tutto il concilio, sventando così l'impudentissima scelleraggine dei nemici d'Atanasio. Ma attribuendo essi questo alle arti magiche di Atanasio, non desisterono dal cospirare contro la sua vita. Perciò condannato all'esilio, fu relegato a Treviri, nella Gallia. Poi, sotto l'imperatore Costanzo, fautore degli Ariani, sbattuto da tempeste sollevategli contro e soffrendo incredibili calamità, percorse gran parte del mondo; ed espulso sovente dalla sua chiesa, sovente ancora vi fu restituito per autorità di Giulio, Romano Pontefice, per la protezione dell'imperatore Costante, fratello di Costanzo, e per decreto altresì del concilio di Sardi e di Gerusalemme, rimanendogli però gli Ariani sempre ostili; e per sottrarsi al loro ostinato furore e alla morte, rimase nascosto cinque anni in una cisterna secca, a conoscenza solo di un amico di Atanasio, il quale lo sostentava di nascosto.

Morto Costanzo, Giuliano l'Apostata, che gli successe nell'impero, avendo permesso ai vescovi esiliati di ritornare alle loro chiese, anche Atanasio ritornò ad Alessandria, accoltovi coi più grandi onori. Ma non molto dopo, perseguitato da Giuliano, ad istigazione degli stessi Ariani, fu costretto ad allontanarsene di nuovo. Cercato a morte dai satelliti di lui, egli fece girare indietro la barca su cui fuggiva su d'un fiume, e di proposito si fece incontro a coloro che l'inseguivano; e richiesto da essi quanto fosse distante Atanasio, rispose non essere molto lontano: così tenendo quelli la via opposta, la scampò, e ritornato ad Alessandria vi rimase nascosto fino alla morte di Giuliano. Poco dopo, suscitatasi una nuova tempesta, restò chiuso quattro mesi nella tomba del padre. Infine, liberato miracolosamente da tali e tanti pericoli, morì in Alessandria, nel suo letto, sotto Valente; la sua vita e morte fu illustrata da grandi miracoli. Scrisse molte opere piene di pietà e chiarezza per spiegare la fede cattolica, e governò santissimamente la chiesa d'Alessandria per quarant'anni in mezzo alle più grandi vicissitudini.

Apologia della sua fuga, prima della metà
La legge ordinava di stabilire delle città di rifugio, in cui, coloro che in qualsiasi modo fossero cercati a morte, potessero rimanervi sicuri. Inoltre, venuto nella pienezza dei tempi quello stesso Verbo del Padre, che antecedentemente aveva parlato a Mosè, diede di nuovo quest'ordine, dicendo: « Quando vi perseguiteranno in una città, fuggite in un'altra » Matth. 10,23. E poco dopo aggiunge: « Quando vedrete l'orrore della desolazione, predetta dal profeta Daniele, posta nel luogo santo (chi legge, comprenda), allora quelli che dimorano nella Giudea, fuggano ai monti; e chi starà sulla terrazza, non discenda per prender nulla di casa sua ; e chi è al campo, non ritorni per pigliar la sua veste » Matth. 24,15.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Perché bisogna assolutamente osservare quanto Dio comanda. Ma gli uomini santi avendo appreso dal Salvatore anche questa forma legittima di combattimento contro i persecutori (poiché da lui e prima e sempre venivano istruiti), fuggirono; e da quelli cercati si nascondevano. Dacché ignorando essi la fine del tempo stabilitosi dalla divina provvidenza, non volevano affidarsi temerariamente a chi loro tendeva insidia: ma al contrario, sapendo essere scritto, che le sorti degli uomini son nelle mani di Dio Sap. 3,1 ed esser proprio del Signore dare la morte e la vita; piuttosto la durarono sino alla fine, andando in giro, come dice l'Apostolo Hebr. 11,37, «in pelli di pecora e di capra, mancanti di tutto, maltrattati, errando per i deserti, nascondendosi nei monti e nelle caverne» finché venisse il tempo fissato della morte, o colui che aveva fissato il tempo, Iddio, parlasse loro, e reprimesse gli insidiatori, ovvero li consegnasse manifestamente ai persecutori, come a lui fosse piaciuto.

Reading 4
The great Athanasius, the greatest soldier that the Catholic Religion hath perhaps ever had, was an Alexandrian. He was ordained Deacon by Alexander, in the year 326, Bishop of that city, whom he afterwards succeeded. In 325 he had followed Alexander to the Council of Nicea, where he wrestled triumphantly against the blasphemy of Arius. For this reason he was honoured with so much of their hatred by the Arians, that their vindictiveness never forsook him from that time forward. In the year 335, they called together a Council at Tyre, composed for the most part of Arian Bishops, where they suborned a wretched woman to charge Athanasius with having raped her when she had received him as a guest into her house. Athanasius therefore came into the assembly, and with him a certain priest whose name was Timothy. This Timothy arose as though he were Athanasius, and asked her, saying Woman, was it I that was thy guest was it I that raped thee She cried out indignantly Yea, thou it was that didst rape me, the which she attested with an oath, and called on the honour of the judges to punish such iniquity. Upon this discovery of her perjury, they drave the shameless woman from their presence.

The Arians also accused Athanasius of having murdered the (schismatic) Bishop Arsenius. This Arsenius they kept shut up, and brought into the court a dead man's hand, which they declared had been his, and had been cut off by Athanasius to use in sorcery. But Arsenius escaped in the night, and when he appeared before all the Council whole and sound, the brazen-faced crime of the enemies of Athanasius was exposed. This appearance nevertheless they attributed to Athanasius being a warlock, and persisted still in their attack on him. He was driven into exile, and banished to Treves in Gaul. Thenceforth, under authority of the Emperor Constantius, that abettor of Arians, he was hunted to and fro with unceasing persecutions. He suffered hardships which it is difficult to believe. He was sent wandering all about the Roman world. He was twice more thrust out of his See, and again restored through the authority of Pope Julius of Rome, and with the protection of the Emperor Constans, the brother of Constantius, by decrees of the Councils of Sardica and of Jerusalem. The vindictiveness of the Arians never let him alone. In his third exile so great was the danger of his life from the pursuit of their undying hatred, that he had to lie hid for five years in a dry cistern, unknown to all men, save one of his friends who brought him food.

After the death of Constantius, Julian the Apostate, who succeeded him, allowed every sort of Bishop who had been banished to return to their own Churches. Athanasius therefore returned to Alexandria, and was received with profound reverence. But it was not long before the same Arians got Julian to hunt him down again, and again it behoved him to fly. A band of soldiers were sent in pursuit of him to kill him, and as he fled up the Nile, their boat pressed hard on his. Athanasius, before they were yet in sight, had his own boat turned round, and went down the stream to meet them. As the vessels passed one another the murderers called out to ask if they knew where Athanasius was, and the servant of God himself cried to them in answer, Ye are close to him! whereupon they redoubled their exertions to ascend the stream, and Athanasius went peacefully down to Alexandria, and found means of concealment till the death of Julian. Yet once again he had to fly from another persecution at Alexandria, and in this his fifth and last exile he hid himself for four months in his own father's sepulchre. From all these so many and so great dangers did God deliver him, and at last he died in his own bed at Alexandria, upon the 2nd day of May, in the year of salvation 373, in the reign of Valens. He wrote much that is both godly and luminous in explaining the Catholic Faith, and governed the Church of Alexandria in great holiness, amid all changes of weather, for six and forty years.

A Gerusalèmme l'Invenzione della sacrosanta Croce del Signore, all'epoca dell'Imperatore Costantino.
A Roma, sulla via Nomentàna, la passione dei santi Martiri Alessandro primo Papa, Evènzio e Teódolo Preti. Tra essi Alessandro, sotto il Principe Adriano ed il Giudice Aureliano, dopo le catene, la prigionia, l'eculeo, le graffiature ed il fuoco, fu trafitto con punture spessissime per tutte le membra ed ucciso, Evènzio e Teódolo, dopo lunga prigionia, provati col fuoco, alla fine furono decollati.
A Nami san Giovenàle, Vescovo e Confessore.
Presso il monte Senàrio, in Toscana, il natale dei santi Sostenéo ed Uguccióne Confessori, dei sette fondatori dell'Ordine dei Servi della beata Maria Vergine, i quali, celestialmente avvisati, nello stesso giorno e nella stessa ora, recitando la salutazione angelica, passarono da questa vita. La loro festa però e quella dei loro Compagni si celebra il dodici Febbraio.
A Costantinópoli i santi Martiri Alessandro soldato ed Antonina Vergine. Costei, nella persecuzione di Massimiano, sotto il Preside Pesto, condannata ad un luogo infame, e da Alessandro, che in suo luogo era ivi rimasto, nascostamente tratta fuori travestita, con lui poi fu fatta tormentare, ed ambedue colle mani troncate furono gettati insieme nel fuoco per Cristo, e così, compiuto un illustre combattimento, vennero coronati.
Nella Tebàide i santi Martiri Timòteo e Maura coniugi, i quali dal Prefetto Ariano, dopo molti tormenti, furono fatti configgere in croce; sulla quale essendo rimasti appesi vivi per nove giorni, ed essendosi fortificati nella fede, compirono il martirio.
A Ghera, in Caria, i santi Martiri Diodóro e Rodopiàno, nella persecuzione dell'Imperatore Diocleziano, lapidati dai loro concittadini.

May 3rd 2026, the 16th day of the Moon,

It is commemorated the finding at Jerusalem in the time of the Emperor Constantine of the Most Holy Cross of the Lord.
Upon the same day, were born into the better life: At Rome, upon the Nomentan Way, the holy martyrs Pope Alexander I., [in the year 117,] and the priests Eventius and Theodulos. Under the Emperor Hadrian and the judge Aurelian, Alexander suffered chains and imprisonment, racking, tearing with hooks, and fire, and was at length put to death by small stabs over his whole body. Eventius and Theodulos were long imprisoned, then examined under torture by fire, and at last beheaded.
At Narni, [in the year 376,] the holy Confessor Juvenal, Bishop of that see.
At Constantinople, [in the year 313,] the holy martyrs Alexander the Soldier, and Antonina the Virgin. In the persecution under the Emperor Maximian the President Festus condemned her to a brothel Alexander awaited her there, changed clothes with her, and so enabled her to escape. For this reason they were put to the torture together, and when both had had their hands cut off, they were together cast into the fire for Christ's sake, and having so finished together their noble contending, were crowned together.
In the Thebaid, [about the year 286,] the holy martyrs Timothy and Myra his wife. The Prefect Arian, after putting them to diverse torments, ordered them to be crucified together. They hung upon the cross alive for nine days, the one strengthening the other in the faith, and so together at last finished their testimony.
At Aphrodisia, in Karia, [in the fourth century,] the holy martyrs Diodorus and Rodopian, who were stoned to death by their fellow-citizens during the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian.

103:2 stendi il cielo come una tenda, * copri di acqua la sua parte superiore;
103:3 monti sopra le nuvole, * cammini sulle ali dei venti;
103:4 fai i tuoi Angeli [come] venti: * e i tuoi ministri [come] fuoco fiammante.
103:5 Tu hai fondato la terra sulle sue basi: * essa non crollerà nei secoli dei secoli.

103:13 Dalle alte tue dimore tu [o Dio] irrighi i monti: * col frutto delle tue opere sarà saziata la terra.
103:14 Tu fai crescere il fieno per le bestie * e gli erbaggi per uso degli uomini:
103:14 per trarre dalla terra il pane, * ed il vino, che rallegra il cuore dell'uomo:
103:15 e perché questi possa con l'olio far risplendere la sua faccia, * e il pane corrobori il cuore dell'uomo.
103:16 Avran nutrimento a sazietà gli alberi della campagna, e i cedri del Libano, che egli ha piantato. * Ivi gli uccelli faranno il loro nido.
103:17 La casa della cicogna domina le altre: * gli alti monti sono per i cervi: le roccie [sono] il rifugio dei ricci.
103:19 Egli fece la luna per segnare i tempi: * il sole conosce il suo tramonto.

103:26 animali piccoli e grandi. * Ivi scorreranno le navi,
103:27 e quel dragone che tu formasti, perché vi scherzi. * Tutti essi attendono da te, che tu dia loro il cibo a suo tempo.

Signore, esaudisci le nostre preghiere, che ti rivolgiamo nella solennità del tuo beato Confessore e Vescovo Atanasio: e come egli meritò di servirti degnamente, così, per intercessione de' suoi meriti, assolvici da tutti i peccati
