Dopo l'insigne vittoria, che l'imperator Costantino riportò su Massenzio, allorché gli fu manifestato miracolosamente il labaro della Croce del Signore, Elena, madre di Costantino, avvertita in sogno, andò a Gerusalemme bramosa di ritrovarvi la Croce; là fece abbattere una statua marmorea di Venere, postavi dai Gentili, dopo circa cento ottant'anni proprio sul luogo della Croce per far scomparire il ricordo della passione di Cristo Signore. Lo stesso fece pure al presepio del Salvatore e sul luogo della risurrezione, facendo togliere là il simulacro di Adone e qua quello di Giove.

Sgombrato pertanto il luogo della Croce, si scopersero tre croci profondamente sotterrate, e, separatamente, il titolo della Croce del Signore: per cui non sapendosi a quale delle tre fòsse stato apposto, un miracolo pose fine al dubbio. Macario, vescovo di Gerusalemme, dopo aver innalzato preghiere a Dio, accostò successivamente le tre croci ad una donna gravemente inferma; mentre due non le arrecarono alcun soccorso, avvicinata la terza Croce fu subito guarita.

Elena, ritrovata la Croce salutare, innalzò lì stesso una chiesa veramente magnifica, lasciandovi una parte della Croce rinchiusa in una teca d'argento, e un'altra parte la portò al figlio Costantino, e fu riposta in Roma nella chiesa di santa Croce in Gerusalemme, innalzata nel palazzo Sessoriano. Portò anche al figlio i chiodi ai quali fu appeso il santissimo corpo di Gesù Cristo. Da quel momento Costantino fece una legge, che a nessuno fosse fatto più subire il supplizio della croce. Così (la croce) che prima era per gli uomini oggetto d'obbrobrio e disprezzo, cominciò ad essere oggetto di venerazione e di gloria.

Trattato 11 su Giovanni, dopo il principio
Nicodemo era uno di quelli, che avevano creduto nel nome di Gesù, vedendo i miracoli e prodigi che faceva. Infatti l'Evangelista ha detto più sopra: «Essendo egli a Gerusalemme per la festa di Pasqua, molti credettero nel suo nome» Joann. 2,23. Perché credettero nel suo nome? Per quel che segue: «Vedendo i prodigi che faceva» (Ibi). E che dice di Nicodémo? «C'era uno dei capi dei Giudei, chiamato Nicodémo. Egli venne di notte da Gesù e gli disse: Maestro, noi sappiamo che tu sei un dottore venuto da Dio» Joann. 3,1. Anche lui dunque aveva creduto nel suo nome. E perché egli ci aveva creduto? Soggiunge: «Perché nessuno può fare questi miracoli che fai tu, se Dio non è con lui» Joann. 3.2..

Se dunque Nicodemo era di quei molti, che avevano creduto nel suo nome, consideriamo perché Gesù nella persona di Nicodemo non fidava loro se stesso. Gesù rispose dicendogli: «In verità, in verità ti dico, che se uno non nasce di nuovo, non può vedere il regno di Dio» Joann. 3,3. Gesù dunque si affida a quelli che nasceranno di nuovo. Ecco, quelli credevano in lui, e Gesù non si affidava loro. Tali sono tutti i catecumeni: essi già credono nel nome di Cristo, ma Gesù non si affida loro. Sia attenta la vostra carità e comprenda. Se domandiamo a un catecumeno: Credi in Cristo ? risponde: Credo, e si fa il segno della Croce: lo porta sulla fronte, e non si vergogna della Croce del suo Signore. Egli dunque crede nel suo nome. Domandiamogli ancora: Mangi la carne del Figlio dell'uomo e bevi il sangue del Figlio dell'uomo? non intende quel che diciamo, perché Gesù non ancora si è affidato ad essi.

Il Signore Gesù avendo predetto ai suoi discepoli le persecuzioni che avrebbero sofferto dopo la sua dipartita, soggiunse: «Questo poi non ve lo dissi da principio, perché io ero con voi: e ora me ne torno a colui che mi ha mandato». E qui innanzi tutto è da vedere se prima egli non aveva predetto le sofferenze future. Ora gli altri tre Evangelisti dimostrano averle egli sufficientemente annunziate prima della cena: mentre secondo Giovanni le avrebbe predette dopo il pasto, quando disse: «Questo poi non ve lo dissi da principio, perché io ero con voi».

After that famous victory which the Emperor Constantine gained over Maxentius, in the year 312, on the eve of which the banner of the Cross of the Lord had been given to him from heaven, Helen, the mother of Constantine, being warned in a dream, came to Jerusalem, in 326, to seek for the Cross. There it was her care to cause to be overthrown the marble statue of Venus, which had stood on Calvary for about one hundred and eighty years, and which had originally been put there to desecrate and destroy the memorial of the sufferings of the Lord Christ. The like work Helen did at Bethlehem, by cleansing from an image of Adonis the stable where the Saviour was born, and from an idol of Jupiter, the place where He had arisen from the dead.

Macarius, Bishop of Jerusalem, after offering solemn prayers to God, touched with each of the three a woman who was afflicted with a grievous disease. The two first had no effect, but at the touch of the third she was immediately healed.

Helen, after she had found the life-giving Cross, built over the site of the Passion a Church of extraordinary splendour, wherein she deposited part of the Cross, shut up in a silver case. Another part which she gave to her son, Constantine, was laid up in the Church of the Holy Cross of Jerusalem, which he built at Rome on the site of the Sessorian Palace. She also gave to her son the nails with which the Most Holy Body of Jesus Christ had been pierced. Nicodemus was one of them which believed in the Name of Jesus, when they saw the signs and wonders which He did. So hath John given us to understand a few words before our text: “Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, in the feast-day, many believed in His Name” And wherefore did they believe in His Name John telleth us immediately: “When they saw the miracles which He did.” And now, what saith he touching Nicodemus? “There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto Him Rabbi, we know that Thou art a Teacher come from God.” Nicodemus therefore believed in His Name. And why did he believe He saith “For no man can do these miracles that Thou doest, except God be with him.”

Lo, then, Nicodemus was one of the many which had believed in His Name, let us seek to find in Nicodemus why “Jesus did not commit Himself unto them” Jesus answered and said unto him “Amen, Amen, I say unto thee except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Jesus therefore committeth Himself unto such as be born again. Behold, Nicodemus and they that were with him believed in Jesus, but Jesus did not commit Himself unto them. Just so are all Catechumens they believe in the Name of Christ, but Jesus hath not yet committed Himself unto them. Now I trust ye will be good enough to pay attention, and understand what I am going to say. If ye ask of a Catechumen “Dost thou believe in Christ” he saith “I believe,” and he signeth himself with the sign of the Cross. The Cross of his Lord is marked upon his forehead, and he is not ashamed of it. Behold, he believeth in the Name of Christ. But let us ask him “Dost thou eat the flesh of the Son of Man” and he knoweth not what we mean, for Jesus hath not yet committed Himself unto him.

The Lord Jesus told His disciples what things they should suffer after that He was gone away from them, and then He said: “These things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you; but now I go My way to Him That sent Me.” Let us first see whether it had been that He had not told them before this what they were to suffer in time coming. That He had done so amply before the night of the last Supper, is testified by the three first Evangelists, but it was when that Supper was ended that, according to John, He said: “These things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.”

Nelle miniere Fennénsi della Palestina il natale del beato Silvano, Vescovo di Gaza, il quale, nella persecuzione dell'Imperatore Diocleziano, per ordine di Galério Massimiano Césare, insieme con moltissimi suoi Chierici, fu coronato col martirio.
A Gerusalémme san Ciriaco Vescovo, il quale, mentre visitava i luoghi santi, ivi, sotto Giuliano l'Apòstata, fu ucciso.
