Pio, nato in un paese del Piemonte chiamato Bosco, ma oriundo dalla nobile famiglia Chislieri di Bologna, a quattordici anni entrò nell'ordine dei Predicatori. Si notava in lui un'ammirabile pazienza, profonda umiltà, somma austerità di vita, applicazione continua all'orazione e zelo ardentissimo per l'osservanza regolare e la gloria di Dio. Datosi allo studio della filosofia e teologia, si distinse talmente in esse, che n'ebbe affidata per molti anni con gran lode la carica dell'insegnamento. Tenne in più luoghi conferenze sacre con immenso frutto degli uditori. Sostenne lungamente l'ufficio d'inquisitore con invincibile fortezza d'animo; e preservò, non senza pericolo della vita, molte città immuni dall'eresia allora serpeggiante.

Lettura 5
Paolo IV, cui le esimie virtù lo rendevano carissimo, lo promosse al vescovado di Nepi e Sutri, e dopo due anni l'annoverò fra i cardinali preti della Chiesa Romana. Quindi trasferito da Pio IV alla chiesa di Mondovì in Piemonte, conosciuto che molti abusi s'erano in essa introdotti, visitò tutta la diocesi; e riordinate le cose, tornò a Roma, dove gli fu affidato il disbrigo dei più gravi affari, ch'egli decise sempre con giustizia, apostolica libertà e costanza. Morto Pio, fu, contro l'attesa di tutti, eletto Papa, ma, salvo la veste esterna, non mutò nulla del suo tenore di vita. Egli ebbe zelo incessante per la propagazione della fede, sollecitudine indefessa per la restaurazione della disciplina ecclesiastica, vigilanza assidua per l'estirpazione degli errori, beneficenza inesauribile per sovvenire alle necessità degli indigenti, coraggio invincibile per difendere i diritti della Sede apostolica.

Egli sconfisse, non tanto colle armi quanto colle preghiere innalzate a Dio, presso le isole Cursolari dove aveva radunato un'immensa flotta, il sultano dei Turchi, Selim, inorgoglito per molte vittorie. E conobbe, per rivelazione divina, questa vittoria la stessa ora che fu ottenuta, e l'annunziò ai suoi famigliari. Mentre preparava una nuova spedizione contro i Turchi, egli cadde gravemente infermo; e, dopo aver sofferto pazientissimamente dolori acutissimi, giunto agli estremi, ricevuti i consueti sacramenti, placidissimamente rese l'anima a Dio, nell'anno 1572, in età d'anni sessantotto, dopo aver regnato sei anni, tre mesi e ventiquattro giorni. Il suo corpo si venera dai fedeli con grandissima devozione nella basilica di santa Maria Maggiore, e Dio ha operato per sua intercessione molti miracoli. I quali approvati giuridicamente, egli fu annoverato da Clemente XI nell'albo dei Santi.

Sermone 2, nell'anniversario della sua ascesa, prima di metà
Come ci riferisce la lettura evangelica. Gesù lui interrogò i discepoli che cosa pensassero di in mezzo a tanti pareri diversi. E san Pietro rispose: «Tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio del Dio vivente». Allora il Signore gli disse: «Beato te, o Simone, figlio di Giona, perché questo non ti è stato rivelato dalla carne o dal sangue, ma dal Padre mio che sta nei cieli. Perciò io ti dico che tu sei Pietro e su questa pietra edificherò la mia Chiesa e le porte dell'inferno non prevarranno mai contro di essa. E a te darò le chiavi del regno dei cieli, e qualunque cosa avrai legata sulla terra, sarà legata anche nei cieli, e qualun que cosa avrai sciolta sulla terra, sarà sciolta anche nei cieli». L»ordine stabilito da Gesù Cristo rimane ancora; e san Pietro, che ha conservato fino ad oggi la solidità della pietra, non abbandonò mai il governo della Chiesa di cui fu incaricato.

Nella Chiesa intera, infatti, ogni giorno Pietro dice: «Tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio del Dio vivente»; ed ogni lingua che riconosce il Signore viene istruita col magistero di tale voce. Tale fede sconfigge il diavolo e scioglie i legami di coloro che egli tiene prigionieri. Essa fa entrare nel cielo coloro che ha strappato alla terra e le porte dell'inferno non possono prevalere contro di essa. È stata infatti per potenza divina munita di una tale saldezza che mai la potrà corrompere la malvagità degli eretici né la potrà superare la perfidia dei pagani. Con tali disposizioni dunque, dilettissimi, e con razionale ossequio si celebri la festività odierna: affinché nell'umiltà della mia persona venga riconosciuto e onoralo colui, nel quale continua la cura che tutti i pastori hanno nella custodia delle pecore loro affidate e la cui dignità non viene meno per l'indegnità dell'erede.

Mentre dunque rivolgiamo le nostre esortazioni all'orecchio della vostra santità, pensate che vi parli colui, del quale facciamo le veci: sia perché vi esortiamo con lo stesso suo affetto, sia perché nient'altro predichiamo a voi se non quello che egli ha insegnato, scongiurandovi a vivere una vita casta e sobria e timorata di Dio, avendo cinto i fianchi del vostro spirito. Come dice l'Apostolo, siete mia gioia e mia corona, se la vostra fede, che dall'inizio del Vangelo è stata predicata in tutto il mondo, rimarrà nell'amore e nella santità. Reading 4
Michael Ghislieri afterwards proclaimed Pope under the name of Pius V, was born ~on the 27th of January, in the year 1504, at the town of Bosco in the Milanese, but his family was a noble one of Bologna. At the age of fourteen years he entered the order of Friars Preachers. He was a man marked by a wonderful long-suffering, a deep lowliness, a great hardness of living, an unwavering earnestness in prayer, and a most strong zeal for the perfect observance of the Rule of his Order, and for the greater glory of God. He gave himself to the study of Philosophy and Theology, and was so learned in both, that he discharged for many years with great reputation the duties of a Professor of those sciences. He preached publicly in many places, to the great profit of his hearers. He long did the work of Inquisitor with unflinching spirit, and preserved many cities, not without risk to his own life, from the heresy which was then creeping in everywhere.

Paul IV, to whom his virtues had greatly endeared him, raised him in 1556, to the united Bishoprics of Nepi and Sutri, and after two years he was enrolled among the Cardinal Priests of the Roman Church. Pius IV. translated him to the Church of Mondovi in Piedmont, wherein, on his coming, he found that many corruptions had crept in. He reformed the whole of his diocese, and, after settling his affairs, returned to Rome, where his attention was called to matters of the gravest business, in determining which he used Apostolic boldness and firmness. After the death of Pius IV, the fifth Pius, to the astonishment of all men, was elected to succeed him, on the 7th of January, 1566. On becoming Pope he changed his way of life in no respect except as regarded his raiment. The Propagation of Religion was to him the object of unceasing care the restoration of the Discipline of the Church, of unwearied toil the uprooting of error, of sleepless watchfulness the relieving the needs of the poor, of unfailing charity the maintenance of the rights of the Apostolic See, of adamantine firmness.

The Turkish Sultan Selim was bloated with many victories, and had got together an huge fleet in the Gulf of Lepanto, but Pius V. crushed him, on the 7th of October, 1571, not so much by force of arms as by dint of the prayers wherein he pleaded with God. At the hour that the victory was won, Pius knew it by the inward revelation of God, and stated the fact to his servants. He was busied with the preparations for a new expedition against the Turks, when he was laid down by grievous sickness. He bore most sharp sufferings with the gentlest patience, and when the end came, he received the Sacraments as is usual, and with great peace yielded his spirit to God, on the 1st of May, in the year of salvation 1572, and of his own age the 68th, having sat as Pope six years, three months, and twenty-four days. His body is buried in the Church of St. Mary, where the Manger from Bethlehem is, and is there held in great respect by the faithful, who have obtained from God by his prayers, many evident miracles. The said miracles having been proved by a judicial investigation Pope Clement XI enrolled his name among those of the Saints.

When the Lord, as we read in the Gospel, asked his disciples who did men, amid their diverse speculations, believe him the Son of Man to be, blessed Peter answered and said: Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And the Lord answered and said unto him: Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father, which is in heaven: and I say also unto thee: That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it; and I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. But the dispensation of truth perdures, and blessed Peter, persevering in the strength of the rock which he hath received, hath not relinquished the position he assumed at the helm of the Church.

A Roma san Giovànni, Apostolo ed Evangelista, avanti la Porta Latina, il quale, per ordine di Domiziano, da Efeso fu tradotto legato a Roma, e, per sentenza del Senato, avanti la detta Porta gettato in una caldaia di olio bollente, ne uscì più sano e gagliardo di prima.
A Damasco il natale del beato Giovànni Damascèno, Prete, Confessore e Dottore della Chiesa, celebre per dottrina e santità. Questi, per il culto delle sante immagini, combattè valorosamente colla parola e cogli scritti contro Leone Isàurico; per le calunnie poi di questo Imperatore essendo stata amputata allo stesso Giovànni la mano destra dal Principe dei Saracèni, egli, raccomandandosi alla beata Vergine Maria, le cui immagini aveva difeso, riebbe subito la destra intera e sana. La sua festa si celebra il ventisette Marzo.
A Cirène, nella Libia, san Lucio Vescovo, di cui fa menzione san Luca negli Atti degli Apostoli.
