Dal libro dei Morali di san Gregorio Papa
Lib. 9. Cap. 2.
«Veramente so ch'è così, e che l'uomo in confronto con Dio non può esser giusto» Job. 9,1. Infatti l'uomo se non si mette a confronto con Dio pare giusto, perde questa apparenza se si mette a confronto con lui; perché chiunque si paragona coll'autore del bene, si priva del bene che ha ricevuto. Poiché chi si attribuisce i beni ricevuti, lotta contro Dio coi suoi propri doni. Pertanto è giusto che l'orgoglioso sia umiliato, per ciò onde l'umile è esaltato. Ma il sant'uomo, che sa bene tutto il merito della nostra virtù non essere che difetto se l'eterno arbitro lo giudica rigorosamente, rettamente soggiunge: «S'egli vorrà contendere con lui, non potrà rispondergli una volta su mille» Job. 9,3.

Nella sacra Scrittura il numero mille designa ordinariamente l'universalità. Ond'è che il Salmista dice:
«Egli si ricordò della parola che impegnò per mille generazioni» Ps. 104,8; mentre è certo che dal principio del mondo fino alla venuta del Redentore l'Evangelista non conta più di settantasette generazioni. Che esprimerebbe dunque il numero mille, se non indica l'universalità completa della generazione divinamente predestinata a produrre un popolo nuovo? Quindi anche Giovanni dice «Ed essi regneranno con lui per mille anni» Apoc. 20,6: perché evidentemente l'universalità perfetta termina di consolidare il regno della santa Chiesa.

Ma siccome uno moltiplicato dieci fa dieci, e dieci moltiplicato dieci fa cento, il quale moltiplicato ancora dieci fa mille; quando noi cominciamo da uno per arrivare a mille, che rappresenta in questo luogo l'unità se non il principio d'una buona vita? e che designa la grandezza dei numero mille, se non la perfezione della medesima buona vita? Ora contendere con Dio non è attribuire a lui, sibbene arrogare a se stesso il merito della propria virtù. Ma l'uomo santo consideri bene questo, che anche chi ha ricevuto doni sommi, viene a perdere tutto quanto aveva ricevuto, se se ne insuperbisce.

Sermone 44 sulle parole del Signore verso il principio
Per la risurrezione di quel giovane gioì la vedova sua madre: madre nostra, la Chiesa, gode anch'essa ogni giorno per gli uomini che risuscitano spiritualmente. Quello sì era morto nel corpo; ma questi sono morti nell'anima. Si piangeva visibilmente la morte visibile di quello; ma nessuno si occupava, nessuno si accorgeva della morte invisibile di costoro. Ben se ne occupo colui che conosceva (questi) morti. E quegli solo conosceva (questi) morti, il quale poteva rendere loro la vita. Difatti, s'egli non fosse venuto per risuscitare i morti, l'Apostolo non direbbe: «Sorgi, tu, che dormi e risorgi da morte, e Cristo t'illuminerà» Eph. 5,14.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Chi mi darà che tu mi protegga nell'inferno e mi nasconda, finché passi il tuo furore, o Signore, se non tu, che solo sei Dio?

Ora noi troviamo nel Vangelo tre morti risuscitati visibilmente dal Signore, ma egli ha risuscitato migliaia di morti invisibili. E quanti morti abbia risuscitato visibilmente, chi può saperlo? Perché non tutto ciò che fece è stato scritto. Lo dice Giovanni: «Ci sono poi motte altre cose che ha fatto Gesù, le quali. se si scrivessero, credo che il mondo non ne potrebbe contenere i libri (che si dovrebbero scrivere)» Joann. 21,25. Molti altri, senza dubbio, sono stati dunque risuscitati, ma non senza ragione si fa menzione solo di tre. Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo voleva che i miracoli che operava nei corpi, s'intendessero anche spiritualmente. Perciò egli non faceva i miracoli per i miracoli soltanto; ma perché eccitando l'ammirazione di quelli che li vedevano, essi fossero ancora (pieni di) verità per quelli che li comprendevano.

℟. Due Serafini cantavano alternativamente:

Colui che vede in un libro delle lettere scritte ottimamente, ma non sa leggere, loda, si, la mano dello scrittore, ammirando la bellezza dei caratteri; ma che vogliano dire queste lettere, quale sia la loro destinazione, egli l'ignora, e loda ciò che vede cogli occhi, ma il suo spirito non ne comprende nulla. Un altro invece loda l'abilità dello scrittore, ma ne comprende anche lo scritto: non solo egli vede ciò che tutti possono vedere, ma sa anche leggere (quei caratteri); ciò che non può chi non l'ha imparato. Così coloro che hanno visto i miracoli di Cristo senza capirne il significato, senza comprendere ciò ch'essi indicano, per così dire, alle anime illuminate, costoro hanno ammirato solo i fatti (materiali del miracolo); ma gli altri hanno insieme ammirato i fatti e li hanno compresi. Tali dobbiamo essere noi alla scuola di Cristo.

We know that it is so of a truth, and that a man cannot be justified as against God. When God is put out of the consideration, a man may be considered to be just, but considered as against God, his righteousness vanisheth away. When a man measureth himself by his relation to Him, Who is the Author of all good, he doth thereby acknowledge that of himself he hath no good in him, but hath received from God whatsoever he hath. He that glorifieth himself because of good which hath been given him, fighteth against God with God's own gifts. It is just therefore that the grounds upon which he ought to have been humbled, but upon which he hath puffed himself up, should be used to humble his vain-glory. But an holy man, because he perceiveth that the worth of our own good deeds falleth short, when he considereth his own spiritual man, justly saith If He will contend with him, he cannot answer Him one of a thousand.

Reading 5
In the Holy Scriptures the numeral a thousand is used to be taken as signifying a generalization. Thus, the Psalmist saith The word which He commanded to a thousand generations Ps. civ. 8, whereas it is notorious that the Evangelist doth not reckon more then seventy-and-seven generations between the very beginning of the world and the coming of our Redeemer. What therefore is to be understood here by a thousand The general ripeness of the old generation to bring forth a new offspring. Hence also it is said by John And shall reign with Him a thousand years Apoc. xx. 6, because the reign of the Holy Church will be over all mankind made perfect.

Reading 6
When times one is ten, and ten times ten is an hundred, and ten times an hundred is a thousand. Observing therefore this connection between one and a thousand, what are we to understand by the one (in the text, connected as it is with the thousand whereby we understand perfection)? Is it not the beginning of a good life, even as the thousand representeth perfection? The contending with God (which is spoken of in the text) is the non-acknowledgment of that which is owed to Him, and the vain-glorying instead in our own strength. But an holy man should see, that even if one had received the gifts of perfection, and were to make them the grounds of self-glorifying, such an one would thereby lose all that he had received.

That her son was called again to life was the joy of that widowed mother; that souls of men are every day called to life is the joy of our Mother the Church. He was dead in body they have been dead in mind. His death was outward, and was outwardly bewailed; their inward. Death hath been neither mourned for nor seen. But He hath sought for them, Who hath seen that they are dead, and He only hath seen that they are dead, Who hath been able to make them alive. If He had not come to raise the dead, the Apostle had not said: “Awake, thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.” Eph. v. 14.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

A Troyes, in Frància, san Nemòrio Diacono e Compagni Martiri, uccisi da Attila, Re degli Unni.
A Nicomédia il natale del beato Giovànni Martire, il quale, vedendo affissi nel foro i crudeli editti contro i Cristiani, acceso di zelo per la fede, stesa la mano, li staccò e stracciò. Questo fatto essendo stato riferito a Diocleziano e Massimiàno Augusti, i quali si trovavano nella medesima città, comandarono che contro di lui si adoperassero tutti i generi di supplizi, sopportati dal nobilissimo uomo con tanta allegrezza di volto e di spirito, che non apparve in lui neppure un segno di tristezza.
A Cesarèa, in Cappadócia, sant'Eupsichio Martire, il quale, sotto l'Imperatore Adriàno, essendo stato accusato di esser Cristiano, fu imprigionato, e, poco dopo, liberato, vendette subito il suo patrimonio, e ne distribuì il prezzo, parte ai poveri, parte a quelli che lo avevano accusato, come a suoi benefattori. Ma, preso di nuovo, e perchè non voleva sacrificare agli idoli, crudelissimamente lacerato e trafitto con la spada, sotto il Giudice Saprizio compì il martirio.
A Pompeiópoli, in Cilicia, san Sozònte Martire, il quale, sotto l'Imperatore Massimiàno, fu gettato nel fuoco, e così rese lo spirito.

September 7th 2026, the 25th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Nicomedia, the blessed martyr John. When he saw the cruel edicts against the Christians hanging up in the market-place, in the heat of his faith he stretched forth his hand, pulled them down, and tore them up. When this was told to the Emperors Diocletian and Maximian, who were then in that city, they ordered all the kinds of torment to be tried upon him and the man, right noble as he was, bore this with such a cheerful face and heart that he seemed not even saddened thereby.
At Caesarea, in Cappadocia, the holy martyr Eupsychius, who was cast into prison under the Emperor Hadrian on the charge of being a Christian. Being shortly liberated therefrom, he forthwith sold his inheritance, and distributed the price thereof partly unto the poor, and partly unto his accusers, as unto benefactors. He was arrested again, and finished his testimony under the judge Sapritius, being mangled, and pierced with the sword.
At Soli, in Cilicia, the holy martyr Sozon, who under the Emperor Maximian was cast into the fire, and gave up the ghost.
At Aquileia, (in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian,) the holy martyr Anastasius.
