Lorenzo, nato a Venezia dall'illustre famiglia Giustiniani, fin dall'infanzia mostrò una grande gravità di costumi. Trascorsa l'adolescenza nelle pratiche della pietà, sentendosi invitato dalla divina Sapienza ai casti sponsali dell'anima con Cristo, cominciò a riflettere in quale istituto religioso dovesse entrare. Pertanto preparandosi santamente alla nuova milizia, oltre alle altre mortificazioni corporali si mise a dormire sulle nude tavole; e mentre un giorno considerava da una parte i piaceri del mondo e un matrimonio preparatogli dalla madre, e dall'altra le austerità del chiostro, gettando gli occhi sull'immagine del Crocifisso: «Sei tu, disse, Signore, la mia speranza: in te si trova sicurissimo rifugio» Ps. 90,9, si rifugiò nella comunità dei canonici di San Giorgio in Alga. Dove, trovando nuovi mezzi di mortificazione, intraprese contro se stesso, come se si trattasse del più terribile nemico, il più ostinato combattimento, non permettendosi più nessuna soddisfazione, neppure quella di andare nel giardino di famiglia e di varcare la casa paterna, se non per compiere gli ultimi doveri della pietà verso la madre morente, che fece senza versar lacrime. La stessa cura metteva nel praticare l'obbedienza, la dolcezza e soprattutto l'umiltà, ricercando gli uffici più abbietti della comunità, mendicando nei luoghi più frequentati della città, e raccogliendovi più scherni che viveri, sopportando impassibile e silenzioso le ingiurie e le calunnie; solito di ricorrere soprattutto all'orazione, spesso era rapito in estasi in Dio, e il suo cuore bruciava di tanto ardore, da infiammare alla perseveranza e all'amore di Gesù Cristo anche i confratelli vacillanti.

Designato da Eugenio IV vescovo della sua patria, quanti più sforzi fece per declinare tal dignità, tanto più degnamente la ricoprì. Non cambiando per nulla il suo abituale tenore di vita, conservò continuamente a tavola, nella suppellettile e nel letto, la stessa povertà che aveva sempre praticata. Non aveva che pochi domestici, dicendo ch'egli possedeva un'altra grande famiglia, cioè i poveri di Cristo. A qualsiasi ora si andava da lui, era sempre pronto per tutti, a tutti prodigando la sua carità paterna, e non esitando anche a caricarsi di debiti per soccorrere alla loro indigenza. Richiesto con quale speranza lo facesse: Del mio Signore, rispondeva, il quale potrà facilmente prendersi i miei debiti. E che la sua speranza non fosse delusa dalla divina provvidenza, lo mostravano i soccorsi insperati che gli giungevano continuamente. Costruì più monasteri di vergini, ch'egli formò colla sua vigilanza alla pratica della vita perfetta. Si applicò sommamente a ritrarre le donne dalle pompe del secolo e dalle vanità degli abbigliamenti, e a riformare la disciplina e i costumi nel clero; onde si mostrò veramente degno d'essere proclamato dallo stesso Eugenio davanti ai cardinali la gloria e l'onore dell'episcopato, e d'essere nominato da Nicolò IV, suo successore, primo patriarca di Venezia, trasferendovi il titolo dalla città di Grado.

Favorito del dono delle lacrime, offriva ogni giorno a Dio onnipotente l'ostia di propiziazione. E mentre una volta lo faceva la notte della Natività del Signore, meritò di contemplare Gesù Cristo sotto la forma d'un graziosissimo fanciullo. Era sì grande l'efficacia delle sue preghiere per il gregge affidatogli, che, secondo una testimonianza venuta una volta dal cielo, la repubblica dové la sua salvezza all'intercessione e ai meriti del suo vescovo. Dotato di spirito profetico, predisse più volte avvenimenti umanamente affatto imprevedibili; le sue preghiere spesso fugarono malattie e demoni; e compose opere ripiene di celeste dottrina e spiranti pietà, benché conoscesse appena le regole dello stile. Infine, colpito da mortale malattia, e i suoi domestici preparandogli un letto più comodo per un vecchio e malato, respinse siffatti sollievi che gli sembravano contrastare troppo colla durissima croce sulla quale era spirato il suo Signore, volle farsi mettere sul suo letto abituale, e, vedendo la sua fine approssimarsi, rivolti gli occhi al cielo: Vengo a te, disse, o buon Gesù; e l'8 Gennaio s'addormentò nel Signore. La sua morte preziosa fu attestata da canti angelici uditi da certi monaci Certosini, dal suo santo corpo, che si mantenne integro e incorrotto spirante un odore soave, colla faccia colorita, per più di due mesi che restò insepolto, e da nuovi miracoli operatisi dopo morte. In considerazione di che, il sommo Pontefice Alessandro VIII l'iscrisse nel numero dei Santi. Innocenzo XII poi assegnò la celebrazione della sua festa al 5 Settembre, giorno in cui il sant'uomo era stato innalzato la prima volta sulla cattedra episcopale.

Omelia di s. Gregorio papa
Omelia 9 sui Vangeli.
La lettura del santo Vangelo, fratelli carissimi, ci avverte di considerare diligentemente che noi, che abbiamo ricevuto in questo mondo più degli altri, saremo poi giudicati più severamente dall'autore del mondo. Infatti più i doni sono numerosi, e tanto più grande è il conto che bisogna renderne. Le grazie dunque che si ricevono, devono rendere ciascuno tanto più umile e più pronto a servire a Dio, quanto più si vide obbligato a renderne conto. Ecco un uomo che, nel mettersi in viaggio, chiama i suoi servi e divide tra loro i talenti da far fruttare. Ma dopo molto tempo ritorna per chiederne conto, e ricompensa del guadagno fatto coloro che li hanno impiegati bene, mentre condanna il servo che fu negligente nel farli fruttare.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,
* e l'ha incoronato alle porte del paradiso.

Lettura 8
Chi è dunque quest'uomo che si mette in viaggio, se non il nostro Redentore che, col corpo che aveva preso, se ne andò in cielo? La terra è infatti il luogo proprio della carne; ed essa è comò condotta a mettersi in viaggio quando dal nostro Redentore viene portata in cielo. Ma, come quest'uomo, egli, prima di mettersi in viaggio, consegnò ai suoi servi i propri beni, perché concesse ai suoi fedeli dei doni spirituali. E ad uno diede cinque talenti, ad un altro due, ad un altro uno. Cinque sono infatti i sensi del corpo, cioè: la vista, l'udito, il gusto, l'odorato e il tatto. Con i cinque talenti dunque viene rappresentato il dono dei cinque sensi, cioè la conoscenza delle cose esteriori ; con i due talenti invece vengono indicati l'intelletto e l'azione; con l'unico talento infine si indica soltanto l'intelletto.

* siate come coloro che aspettano il loro padrone quando torni da nozze.

Lettura 9
Mira colui che aveva ricevuto cinque talenti ne guadagnò altri cinque; perché ci sono alcuni che, pur non riuscendo a penetrare le profondità mistiche, tuttavia in vista della patria celeste insegnano, per quanto possono, la rettitudine; dagli stessi talenti esteriori che hanno ricevuto ne ricavano il doppio; e mentre proteggono sé stessi dall'insolenza della carne, dalla corruzione delle cose terrene e dai piaceri delle cose visibili, distolgono da esse con l'esortazione anche gli altri. Ci sono pure alcuni che, quasi arricchiti di due talenti, ricevono il dono dell'intelletto e dell'azione, comprendono le sottigliezze interiori e operano meraviglie all'esterno; e mentre predicano agli altri con l'intelligenza e l'azione, riportano quasi un doppio guadagno dalla loro attività.

Reading 4
This Lawrence was born at Venice, in the year 1380, of the noble family of the Giustiniani, and was an exceedingly sober lad even from his childhood. He passed a godly boyhood, and feeling the Divine Wisdom calling him to a pure marriage between his own soul and the Word of God, he began to think of becoming a monk. He therefore tried in private some of the exercises of this new warfare, and, among other afflictions of his body, used to sleep upon the bare boards. As he thus sat weighing on the one hand the pleasures of the world, and a marriage which his mother wished to bring about for him, and, on the other, the hardness of the cloister, he turned his eyes upon the Cross of the suffering Christ, and said: “Thou, O Lord, art my trust; there hast Thou made my surest refuge.” He entered among the Canons of St-George's-in-the-sea-weed, where he devised new tortures and declared war against himself as his own worst enemy. He allowed himself no enjoyment, so that he would not even go into the private garden of the house, neither did he ever go thenceforth into the house of his own father, except when his mother was dying, and he went there with dry eyes to pay her the last offices of a son's duty and affection. His obedience, gentleness, and especially his lowliness were very great. He went out of his way to take the meanest pieces of work about the house. He used to go to the most public places of the city, seeking, not so much for food as for mockery, and bore unmoved and in silence the insults and slanders which were cast upon him. He found his ever-present help in prayer, wherein he became often beside himself and rapt in God, and such was the warmth that burned in his heart, that he stirred up failing comrades to hold bravely on and to love Jesus Christ.

In the year 1433, Eugene IV named him Bishop of Venice, an office which he very earnestly struggled to avoid, and which he discharged with great honour. He changed in no wise way of living, but kept always to his beloved poverty in his table, his furniture, and his bed. He kept but a small household, saying that he had another very large one, in Christ's poor. At what hour soever any one came to see him, he was always ready to receive them, he helped all with the tenderness of a father, not refusing to charge himself with debts, that he might have wherewith to relieve misery. When he was asked with what hope he incurred these liabilities, he answered: “With hope in my Master, Who can easily meet them for me.” And the Providence of God put not his hope to shame, but helped him amply with unexpected funds. He built several Convents of nuns, for whom his watchful care ordered a more perfect way of living. He laboured much to wean married women from worldly folly and display, and to reform the discipline of the Church and the lives of all. He was indeed worthy that Eugene should call him in the presence of the Cardinals “the glory and ornament of the Episcopate,” and that his successor Nicholas V should transfer the title of Patriarch from Grado, and create him, in 1451, the first Patriarch of Venice.

He was eminent for the gift of tears, in which he offered up to God every day the Sacrifice of atonement. When he was so doing one Christmas Midnight, he won to see Christ Jesus in the form of a little Child exceeding fair to look upon. Such was his care of the flock committed to his charge, that it was sometime revealed from heaven that the Commonwealth had been saved by the prayers of her Bishop. He was inspired with the spirit of prophecy, and fore-told many things which no wit of man could have perceived. By his prayers he often put diseases and devils to flight. Though very ignorant of letters, he wrote books which breathe heavenly teaching and godliness. When he fell into his last deadly sickness, his servants got ready a more comfortable bed for the suffering old man, but he turned away from such ease as so different from the hardness of the Cross upon which his Master had died. He ordered himself to be laid upon the planks to which he was accustomed, and when he knew that the end of his life was come, he looked up to heaven and said: “O good Jesus, I am coming to thee,” and so fell asleep in the Lord on the 8th day of January, in the year 1455. How precious was his death was attested by this, that some Charterhouse monks heard Angels singing and that the hallowed corpse, remaining unburied for two months, was whole and uncorrupted, always yielding a sweet smell, and rosy in the face. New miracles took place after his death, whereby Pope Alexander VIII was moved to enroll his name among those of the Saints. Innocent XII appointed for his Feast the 5th day of September, being that upon which he had first been enthroned in his Cathedral Church.

Dearly beloved brethren, this Lesson from the Holy Gospel moveth us to take good heed lest we, who are seen in this world to have received more than others, should thereby bring ourselves into greater condemnation from the Maker of this world. To whom much is given, of the same is much required. Therefore, let him that receiveth much, strive to be all the more lowly, and all the more ready to do God service, for his very gifts’ sake, knowing that he will be obliged to give account thereof. Behold, a man, travelling into a far country, calleth his own servants, and delivereth unto them talents, to the end that they may trade therewith. After a long time, the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them, and to them that have done well He rendereth a reward of their labours, but that servant which was careless of his master’s work He condemneth.

But that man travelling into a far country delivered unto his servants his goods and so doth our Redeemer give spiritual gifts unto His faithful people. “And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one.” There are five bodily senses that is, sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. By the five talents therefore are signified the five senses, that is, outward knowledge. By the two, wit and work. And by the figure of the one talent, understanding, which is alone.

In Palestina san Zaccaria Profeta, il quale, già vecchio, ritornato dalla Caldèa nella sua patria, ivi morì, e giace sepolto presso il Profeta Aggèo.
Nell'Ellespónto sant'Onesiforo, discepolo degli Apostoli, di cui fa menzione san Pàolo, scrivendo a Timòteo. Lo stesso Onesiforo, insieme con san Porfirio, per ordine del Proconsole Adriano, fu ivi acerbamente battuto e da feroci cavalli trascinato, e così rese lo spirito a Dio.
In Africa i santi Vescovi Donaziàno, Presidio, Mansuèto, Germàno e Fùscolo, i quali, nella persecuzione dei Vandali, per ordine dell'Ariano Re Unnerico, per aver difeso la cattolica verità, furono durissimamente battuti con bastoni e mandati in esilio. Fra essi vi era anche un Vescovo chiamato Leto, uomo valoroso e dottissimo, il quale, dopo lo squallore di lunga prigionia, fu dato alle fiamme.
In Alessàndria la passione dei santi Martiri Fàusto Prete, Macàrio e dieci Compagni, i quali, sotto l'Imperatore Dècio e il Preside Valério, decapitati per il nome di Cristo compirono il martirio.

Martyrology {anticipated}
September 6th 2026, the 24th day of the Moon, is commemorated

The Prophet Zachariah, who returned home from Chaldea as an old man, and is buried beside the prophet Haggai.
Upon the same day, were born into the better life: At the Dardanelles, holy Onesiphorus, a disciple of the Apostles, of whom holy Paul maketh mention in writing unto Timothy. By command of the Proconsul Hadrian, holy Onesiphorus and Porphyry were heavily beaten, and drawn by wild horses, and so gave up their souls to God.
At Alexandria, the holy martyrs the Priest Faustus, Macarius, and ten Companions, who finished their testimony for Christ's name's sake, under the Emperor Decius and the President Valerius, by being beheaded.
In Cappadocia, the holy martyrs the Deacon Cottidus, Eugenius, and their Companions.
In Africa, the holy Bishops Donatian, Prassidius, Mansuetus, German, and Fusculus, who in the persecution under the Vandals were, by command of the Arian King Hunneric, because of their assertion of the Catholic truth, heavily beaten with cudgels, and banished. Among them was also a Bishop named Laetus, a man of great activity and learning, who, after suffering a long and foul imprisonment, was burnt.
At Verona, (in the fifth century,) the holy Confessor Petronius, Bishop (of that see.) At Rome, the holy Abbot Eleutherius, the servant of God, of whom holy Pope Gregory writeth, that by his prayer and tears he raised a man from the dead.

Sir 44:16-17
Behold an high priest, who in his days pleased God, and was found righteous, and in the time of wrath he was made a propitiation.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℣. He clothed him with a robe of glory.

℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

℣. O Lord, hear my prayer.
℟. And let my cry come unto thee.
Let us pray.
Grant, we beseech thee, almighty God, that the venerable feast of Laurence thy blessed Confessor and Bishop may increase our devotion and promote our salvation.
Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
℟. Amen.
