Paolo nella sua proprietà sulla via Ostiense, presso il luogo dov'era stato decapitato; Cornelio poi ripose il corpo del Principe degli Apostoli non lungi dal luogo dov'era stato crocifisso. Il che essendo stato riferito all'imperatore, e come per lo zelo del Pontefice molti si facevano cristiani, questi venne mandato in esilio a Civitavecchia; dove san Cipriano, vescovo di Cartagine, gli scrisse delle lettere di consolazione.

Siccome si rendevano frequentemente l'un l'altro questo dovere di carità fraterna, gl'imperatori n'ebbero ombra, e, mandato Cornelio a Roma, lo fecero flagellare con corde impiombate come reo di lesa maestà, e, menatolo al tempio di Marte, gl'intimarono di offrirgli sacrificio. Ma detestando egli siffatta empietà, gli fu troncata la testa il 14 di Settembre. La beata Lucina, aiutata da chierici, ne seppellì il corpo in un'arenaria d'un suo podere presso il cimitero di Callisto. Egli occupò il trono pontificale circa due anni.

Dopo non molto tempo fu eletto prete, e poi vescovo di Cartagine. Sarebbe superfluo parlare del suo genio, essendo le sue opere più brillanti del sole. Sostenne il martirio sotto gli imperatori Valeriano e Gallieno, nell'ottava persecuzione, lo stesso giorno che Cornelio a Roma, ma non nello stesso anno.

Omelia 35 sui Vangeli.
Il Signore e Redentore nostro annunzia i mali che precederanno la fine del mondo affinché, quando essi verranno, tanto meno perturbino quanto più saranno stati conosciuti prima. Infatti le frecce che sì prevedono feriscono meno; e i mali del mondo ci sembrano più tollerabili quando la previsione ci premunisce contro di essi, come uno scudo. Ecco dunque quello che dice: «Quando sentirete parlare di guerre e sommosse, non vi spaventate; bisogna che prima avvengano queste cose, ma la fine non verrà subito dopo». È necessario ponderare le parole del nostro Redentore, con le quali egli ci annunzia che dobbiamo patire sia all'esterno che all'interno. Le guerre infatti vengono fatte dai nemici, le sommosse dai cittadini. Per indicarci dunque che saremo turbati all'esterno e all'interno, ci dice che altro avremo a soffrire dai nemici e altro dai fratelli.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. I santi di Dio hanno perseverato nella fraternità a causa del comando del Signore e delle leggi paterne.

Quest'uomo indemoniato, che il Signore guarì nello scendere dal monte, Marco dice ch'era sordo e muto, e Matteo invece lunatico. Perché non rimangono mai nello stesso stato, ma dediti ora ad un vizio ora ad un altro, sembrano crescere e decrescere, Essi sono muti, perché non confessano la fede; sordi, perché non intendono in verun modo le parole della verità. E spumano quando la loro stoltezza li rende languidi; essendo proprio degli stolti, dei languidi e degli ebeti far bava dalla bocca. Cornelius was a Roman who held the Papacy during the reign of the Emperors Gallus and Volusian. He, and that most holy Lady Lucina, took the bodies of the Apostles Peter and Paul out of the Catacombs and put them in more convenient places. Lucina laid the body of Paul in a farm of her own upon the road to Ostia, hard by the place where he had received the sword-stroke. Cornelius placed that of the Prince of the Apostles hard by where he had been crucified. When this was told to the Emperors, and likewise that Cornelius was the means of making many Christians, he was banished to Civitavecchia, where Cyprian, the holy Bishop of Carthage, comforted him by letters.

He firmly refused to commit this great wickedness, and was forthwith beheaded, upon the 14th day of September, in the year of our Lord 252. The blessed Lucina, with the help of the clergy, buried his body in the sand-pit on her own farm, near the Cemetery of Callistus. He lived as Pope about two years.

Cypriam was an African. He was first distinguished as a teacher of Rhetoric. He afterwards became a Christian at the persuasion of the Priest Caecilius, whose surname he took, and parted all his goods among the poor. It was not long before he was chosen a Priest, and then made Bishop of Carthage. It would be idle to enlarge upon his, wit, seeing that his works are as well known as the sun. He suffered under the Emperors Valerian and Gallienus, in the eighth persecution, and upon the same day, though not in the same year, that Cornelius testified at Rome.

Our Lord and Redeemer willeth us to know what shall be the signs that the end of the world is at hand, to the end that ye may be the less terrified, when that cometh whereof ye have already had warning. Darts strike less which are seen coming: and the plagues of the earth will be to us more bearable, if we are harnessed against them with the shield of foreknowledge. Behold, how He saith When ye shall hear of wars and commotions be not terrified for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by. It behoveth us to ponder these words of our Redeemer, wherein He warneth us of suffering, from without, and from within. Wars are the work of a foreign enemy, commotions of the citizens. Therefore, that He may let us know that we shall be troubled from within and from without, He showeth that our wrestling shall be in part against strangers, and in part against our brethren.

Concerning this possessed person whom the Lord healed, after that He was come down from the mount, Mark saith that he was deaf and dumb, and Matthew xvii. 15 that he was lunatic. He was a figure of them of whom it is said: A fool changeth as the moon, Ecclus. xxvii. 12. These are they who continue never in one stay, but change now to one sin, and now to another, waxing and waning dumb, in that they confess not the faith deaf, in that they have no ears for the word of truth. They foam at the mouth also, and pine away with folly. For it is the way with idiots, and swooners, and stupified, to foam their spittle out at their mouths. They gnash their teeth when they are inflamed with the heat of passion. They wither up in the paralysis of sloth and live nerveless lives unbraced by any strong exercise.

Sul monte dell'Alvérnia, in Toscàna, la commemorazione dell'Impressione delle sacre Stimmate, che, per meravigliosa grazia di Dio, furono impresse nelle mani, nei piedi e nel costato di san Francésco, Fondatore dell'Ordine dei Minori.
A Roma, il natale di san Robérto Bellarmino, Confessore, della Compagnia di Gesù, Cardinale e già Vescovo di Càpua, chiarissimo per la santità, per la dottrina e per i copiosi lavori intrapresi a difesa della fede cattolica e della Sede Apostolica, il quale da Pio undecimo, Pontefice Massimo, fu innalzato agli onori dei Santi, e dichiarato Dottore della Chiesa universale. La sua festa si celebra il tredici Maggio.
A Roma, sulla via Tiburtìna, il natale di san Giustino, Prete e Martire, il quale, nella persecuzione di Valeriàno e Galliéno, fu celebre per la gloria della confessione. Questi seppellì i corpi del beato Pontefice Sisto secondo, di Lorénzo, Ippolito e moltissimi altri Santi, e finalmente, sotto Clàudio, compì il martirio.

The making of the sacred marks which God was pleased by a wonderful grace to make upon the hands, feet, and side of holy Francis, Founder of the Order of Friars Minor, upon Mount Alvernia in Tuscany.
September 17th 2026, the 5th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:
At Rome, upon the Tiburtine Way, the holy martyr Justin, a Priest who was famous for his glorious confession of Christ in the persecution under the Emperors Valerian and Gallienus. He buried the bodies of the blessed Pope Xystus, of Lawrence, of Hippolytus, and of many other saints, and at length himself achieved martyrdom under Claudius.
Likewise at Rome, (under the Emperor Valerian,) the holy martyrs Narcissus and Crescentio.
In Phrygia, holy Ariadne, martyred under the Emperor Hadrian.
In Britain, (in the fourth century,) the holy martyrs Socrates and Stephen.
At Nyon, (on the Lake of Geneva,) the holy martyrs Valerian, Macrinus, and Gordian.
At Autun, the holy lad Flocellus, who suffered many things under the Emperor Antonine and the President Valerian, and at last was torn by wild beasts, and so received the crown of martyrdom.
At Liege, blessed Lambert, Bishop of Maastricht. In his godly zeal he rebuked the Royal House (of Pepin,) whereupon the saint was slain by the sinners, and he went hence to live for ever in a mansion in the kingdom of heaven.
At Zaragoza, in Spain, (in the year 1485,) holy Peter of Arbues, the first Inquisitor of the Faith in the kingdom of Aragon, who was cruelly murdered by some relapsed Jews for the sake of that Catholic faith which in his office he was zealously protecting. Pope Pius IX enrolled his name among those of the holy martyrs.
