Leggenda di S. Franc, c. 13
Francesco, questo servo e ministro veramente fedele di Cristo, due anni prima di rendere lo spirito al cielo, ritiratosi in un luogo elevato chiamato monte Alvernia per cominciarvi un digiuno di quaranta giorni in onore dell'Arcangelo Michele, fu inondato più abbondantemente dalle dolcezze spirituali della contemplazione soprannaturale ond'era abitualmente favorito e acceso più ardentemente dalla fiamma dei celesti desideri, onde cominciò a sentire un'affluenza straordinaria di tutti i doni soprannaturali. Mentre dunque i serafici ardori delle sue brame lo trasportavano in Dio, e un vivo sentimento di tenera compassione lo trasformava in colui, che volle per un eccesso d'amore essere crocifisso; pregando una mattina nella festa dell'Esaltazione della santa Croce, sul fianco della montagna, vide come l'aspetto d'un Serafino avente sei ali risplendenti e tutte fuoco, discendere dalla sublimità dei cieli. Il quale, giunto con volo rapidissimo a un certo punto nell'aria in prossimità dell'uomo di Dio, apparve non solo alato ma ancora crocifisso; colle mani e i piedi distesi e inchiodati a una croce, le ali invece disposte di qua e di la, in tal maniera, da averne due alzate sulla testa, due spiegate per volare, e le altre due ne coprivano, avvolgendolo, tutto il corpo. A tal visione egli stupì grandemente, e sentì nell'animo suo gioia mista a dolore, ché, mentre la vista gradevole di colui, che gli si mostrava in maniera sì prodigiosa e famigliare, gli causava piacere estremo, il crudele spettacolo della crocifissione gli trapassava l'anima con una spada di compassione dolorosa.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano

Egli sapeva bene, che la debolezza e la sofferenza sono incompatibili coll'immortalità d'uno spirito serafico, ma interiormente illuminato da colui che si mostrava di fuori, comprese che una tale visione era presentata a' suoi sguardi per insegnargli che l'incendio del cuore e non il martirio del corpo era quello che doveva trasformare interamente l'amico di Cristo in una perfetta rassomiglianza con Gesù crocifisso. Sparita pertanto la visione, dopo un arcano e famigliare colloquio, gli rimase l'anima infiammata d'un ardore serafico; e il corpo impresso di ferite simili a quelle del Crocifisso, come se, liquefatto dapprima sotto l'azione del fuoco, avesse poi ricevuta l'impronta d'un sigillo. Infatti cominciarono subito ad apparire nelle sue mani e ai suoi piedi i segni dei chiodi, aventi la loro testa sulla palma delle mani e sul collo dei piedi, e la loro punta all'opposto. Inoltre il lato destro presentava una cicatrice rossa, come se fosse stato trapassato da lancia, e più volte fece sacro sangue sì da bagnare e la tonaca e le altre sottovesti.

℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,
* e l'ha incoronato alle porte del paradiso.

Divenuto dunque Francesco un uomo nuovo, grazie a un nuovo e stupendo miracolo — dacché per un singolare privilegio, di cui nessuno per l'addietro era stato favorito, egli si trovò contrassegnato, o per dir meglio, ornato delle sacre Stimmate — discese dal monte portando con sé l'immagine del Crocifisso, non tracciata già da mano d'artefice su tavole di pietra o di legno, ma stampata sulla propria carne dal dito di Dio vivente. E siccome sapeva benissimo «che è bene tener celati i secreti d'un re» Tob. 12,7, perciò l'uomo serafico, cosciente del segreto del gran re, nascondeva più ch'era possibile quei sacri segni. Ma perché è proprio di Dio il rivelare per sua gloria le grandi cose che fa, il Signore stesso, che aveva impresso segretamente quelle stimmate, le mostrò apertamente con alcuni miracoli; affinché con questi strepitosi prodigi apparisse manifesta la virtù meravigliosa nascosta nelle Stimmate. - Ora questo miracoloso avvenimento sì ben constatato ed esaltato con lodi e favori speciali nelle bolle pontificie, il Papa Benedetto XI volle che si celebrasse ogni anno con una festa; che poi il Pontefice Paolo V, ad accendere i cuori dei fedeli all'amore di Cristo crocifisso, estese a tutta la Chiesa.

Poiché il Signore e Redentore nostro venne al mondo come un nuovo uomo, diede nuovi comandamenti al mondo. Infatti oppose alla nostra vita nutrita nei vizi la contrarietà della novità della sua. Cosa infatti l'uomo vecchio, cosa l'uomo carnale conosceva, se non tenere le sue cose, rubare le altrui, se poteva; desiderare, se non poteva? Ma il medico celeste a ciascun singolo vizio adibisce medicamenti contrari. Infatti come coll'arte della medicina le cose calde si curano con le fredde e le fredde con le calde: così nostro Signore oppose medicine contrarie ai peccati, tanto da ordinare la continenza ai lussuriosi, la generosità ai tirchi, la mansuetudine agli iracondi, l'umiltà agli orgogliosi.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Difatti quando proponeva nuovi comandamenti a quelli che lo seguivano, disse: «Chiunque non rinunzia a tutto quel che possiede, non può essere mio discepolo». Come se volesse dire apertamente: voi che per la vita vecchia desiderate la roba d'altri, elargite per il desiderio di una nuovo modo di vivere anche la vostra. Ascoltiamo cosa dice in questa lezione: «Chi vuol venire dietro a me, rinneghi se stesso». Ivi si dice ché rinneghiamo la nostra roba: qui si dice ché rinneghiamo noi stessi. E forse non è faticoso all'uomo abbandonare la sua roba; ma è molto faticoso abbandonare sé stesso. È da una parte meno negare ciò che ha; molto dall'altra negare quel che è.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Ma il Signore ha comandato a noi che veniamo a Lui di rinunziare a noi: perché quanti veniamo alla gara della fede, ci impegniamo ad una lotta contro gli spiriti maligni. Infatti gli spiriti maligni non possiedono nulla di proprio in questo mondo: quindi dobbiamo lottare nudi con i nudi. Infatti se chiunque lottasse vestito con uno nudo, verrebbe più in fretta sbattuto a terra, perché ha onde venga afferrato. Che cosa infatti sono tutti beni terreni, se non certi indumenti del corpo? Chi dunque si avvicina alla contesa contro il diavolo, getti via gli indumenti, per non soccombere.

Francis being indeed a faithful servant and minister of Christ, about the space of two years before he gave back his spirit to heaven, withdrew himself into an high mountain apart, even that mountain which is called Mount Alverno, and began to fast for forty days to the honour of the Archangel Michael. To think of the things above gave him sweeter comfort than beforetime he was wont, and the hot longing for heaven was kindled in him, so that he began to feel that the gifts from above were poured forth upon him in such fulness as he had never felt before. The burning of his desire made his heart rise towards God like the heart of a seraph, and his tender answering love yearned to be changed into the likeness of Him Who hath so loved us that He was content to bear the Cross. And it was so that one morning early, about the time of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, he was praying upon the side of the mountain, and there appeared unto him as it had been one of the Seraphim, having six wings, glorious and fiery, flying to him from heaven. It came therefore very swiftly, and stood in the air, hard by the man of God. He beheld then the appearance thereof that it was not winged only, but crucified also. His hands and feet were stretched forth and nailed to a Cross. Twain of his wings were lifted up and joined one to the other over his head, and twain were stretched forth to fly withal, and with twain he wrapped around his body. When Francis saw it, he was sore amazed, and his soul was.filled with sorrow and gladness, for the eyes of him that appeared were full of strange love and tenderness, so that he conceived great rejoicing thereat, but the nailing to the Cross was so exceedingly dreadful, that as he saw it, a sword of sorrow pierced his soul.

Then He Whom he beheld with his bodily eyes, began to speak silently unto him in his heart, and he understood that albeit the deathless Seraphim cannot suffer or faint, this vision was nevertheless therefore set before him, that he might know that as a friend of Christ he was to be all changed into the likeness of Christ Jesus crucified, not by the martyrdom of the body, but by the fervour of the soul. From thenceforth there were in his hands and feet the marks of the nails. The heads of the nails were seen in the palms of his hands and on the insteps of his feet, and the points came out on the backs of his hands and the soles of his feet. In his right side also was a long raw wound, as though he had been pierced with a spear, from which wound his holy blood oftentimes ran and stained his shirt and breeches.

Reading 6
Thereafter Francis was a new creature, famous for a new and awful sign. The holy marks of the Lord Jesus, whereon living man for twelve centuries had not been allowed to look, were his adornment. He came down from the mount bearing in himself the form of Jesus Crucified, not portrayed upon tables of stone or wood by the hand of any earthly craftsman, but drawn upon his flesh by the finger of the living God. The dying Seraph knew well that it is good to keep close the secret of a king, Tobit xii. 7, and knowing the secret of his King, he strove as far as in him lay to keep the sacred marks hidden from men. Nevertheless, forasmuch as it is the will of the Lord God for His Own glory to make manifest the greatness of His Own works, He openly showed forth diverse wonders through these wounds which He had Himself made in secret, so that the hidden and wondrous power of the marks might become known by the fame of the miracles. The foregoing marvellous but thoroughly witnessed facts, which were already spoken of in Papal documents with especial praise and joy, were made, by the pleasure of Pope Benedict XI, the subject of a yearly memorial, which was afterwards extended by Paul V. to the whole Church, in the hope of fanning in the hearts of the faithful the love of Christ Crucified.

Our Lord and Redeemer came into the world a new Man, and gave the world new commandments. For against the ways of our old life, brought and bred up in sin, He set the contrast of His new life. It was the old way, according to the knowledge of the carnal man, for every man to keep his own goods, and, if he were able to do it, to take his neighbour's goods also, and, if he were not able to take them, at least to lust after them. But the Heavenly Physician hath medicines wherewith to meet all the diseases of sin. For, even, as by the art of the physician, things hot are healed by things cold, and things cold by things hot, so doth our Lord set against sin holiness, ordaining for the lecherous purity, for the miserly munificence, for the hot-tempered meekness, and for the proud lowliness.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. This is he which wrought great wonders before God, and praised the Lord with all his heart.

Ad Osimo, nel Picèno, san Giuséppe da Copertino, Sacerdote dell'Ordine dei Minori Conventuali e Confessore, il quale dal Papa Clemènte decimoterzo fu ascritto nel numero dei Santi.
A Negropónte, in Grècia, il natale di san Metódio, che fu prima Vescovo di Olimpo, nella Licia, e poi di Tiro, nella Fenicia, chiarissimo per lo splendore del dire e per la dottrina; e, al termine dell'ultima persecuzione (come scrive san Girolamo), fu coronato col martirio.
Nel territorio di Vienne san Ferrèolo Martire, il quale, essendo di potestà tribunizia, per ordine dell'empissimo Preside Crispino, fu preso, e prima crudelissimamente battuto, quindi, caricato con gran peso di catene, fu gettato in un carcere oscurissimo; donde, rottesi per divino volere le catene ed apertesi le porte del carcere, uscendo, fu preso nuovamente da quei che lo inseguivano, e ricevette colla decapitazione la palma del martirio.

Martyrology {anticipated}
September 18th 2026, the 6th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Osimo, the holy Confessor Joseph of Cupertino, of the Order of Friars Minor Conventuals, whose name Pope Clement XIII enrolled among those of the saints.
Upon the same day, holy Methodius, Bishop first of Olympus in Lycia, and afterward of Tyre, very famous for his clear words and teaching, who, as is written by holy Jerome, was crowned with martyrdom at Chalcis, in Greece, at the end of the last persecution.
In the country of Vienne, the holy martyr Ferreolus, of Tribunitial rank. (During the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian,) he was tried by command of the wicked President Crispin, and first most cruelly beaten, then heavily loaded with chains and cast into a foul prison. God loosed his chains, and the gates of the prison opened, and he went forth, but he was followed and again taken, and received the crown of martyrdom by being beheaded.
Also the holy martyrs Sophia and Irene.
At Milan, (in the fourth century,) holy Eustorgius I, Bishop of that city, famous through the witness of blessed Ambrose.

Preghiamo.
Signore Gesù Cristo, che, raffreddandosi la carità nel mondo, per infiammare i nostri cuori col fuoco del tuo amore, rinnovasti le sacre Stimmate della tua passione nel corpo del beatissimo Francesco: concedi benigno, che, per i meriti e preghiere di lui, portiamo continuamente la croce, e facciamo degni frutti di penitenza:
Tu che sei Dio, e vivi e regni con Dio Padre in unità con lo Spirito Santo, per tutti i secoli dei secoli.
