7 Ed egli avea allevata la figlia di suo fratello, Edissa, chiamata con altro nome Ester, la quale aveva perduto ambedue i genitori: ella era oltremodo bella e avvenente d'aspetto. Dopo la morte del padre e della madre, Mardocheo l'avea adottata per figlia.

9 Ed ella gli piacque e trovò grazia agli occhi di lui. E comandò a un eunuco di prepararle subito il suo corredo e di assegnarle la sua porzione di vitto e sette fanciulle delle più belle della casa del re, e di abbigliare e trattar bene tanto lei quanto le sue cameriere.
10 Essa però non volle fargli sapere di qual gente e di qual patria si fosse; ché Mardocheo le aveva ordinato di non dir nulla di questo.
11 Questi poi passeggiava ogni giorno dinanzi al vestibolo della casa, dove le elette vergini erano accolte, sollecito della salute di Ester.

Ella non cercò ornamenti donneschi, ma l'eunuco Egeo custode delle vergini le diede quanto gli parve per abbigliarsi; ella infatti era molto avvenente e d'incredibile bellezza: agli occhi di tutti compariva graziosa e amabile.
16 Ella dunque fu condotta nella camera del re Assuero il decimo mese, chiamato Tebet, l'anno settimo del suo regno.
17 E il re l'amò più di tutte le altre donne, ed ella trovò grazia e favore dinanzi a lui più di tutte le altre donne, ed egli le pose in testa il diadema reale e la fece regina in luogo di Vasti.

Venceslao, duca di Boemia, ebbe per padre Vratislao, cristiano, e per madre Draomira, pagana: ma allevato piamente dalla nonna Ludmilla, donna di grandissima santità, si segnalò in ogni specie di virtù, e conservò colla massima cura per tutta la vita illibata la sua verginità. La madre, che viveva nell'empietà col figlio più giovane Boleslao, impossessatasi della reggenza del regno per l'odioso assassinio di Ludmilla, si attirò l'indignazione dei nobili; i quali, stanchi d'un regime tirannico ed empio, scosso il giogo d'ambedue, si scelsero a Praga per re Venceslao.

Questi, governando il regno più colla pietà che coll'autorità, soccorse gli orfani, le vedove, i poveri con tanta carità, da portare talvolta di notte sulle proprie spalle della legna agl'indigenti, assistere frequentemente alla sepoltura dei poveri, liberare gli schiavi, visitare i carcerati durante notti orribili, consolandoli spessissimo con elemosine e consigli. D'animo mite, il principe s'affliggeva grandemente che si pronunziasse sentenza di morte contro alcuno, sebbene colpevole. Portando somma venerazione ai sacerdoti, seminava il frumento colle proprie mani e spremeva il vino, che doveva servire al sacrificio della Messa. Faceva di notte a piedi nudi il giro delle chiese camminando sul ghiaccio e sulla neve, lasciando sulla terra delle impronte calde e sanguigne.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Lettura 6
Ebbe Angeli custodi del suo corpo. Infatti apprestandosi un giorno a singolare combattimento con Radislao, duca di Gurima, al fine di provvedere alla salvezza dei suoi, si videro degli Angeli portargli delle armi e dire al suo avversario: Non ferirlo. Il nemico terrorizzato, gli si gettò umilmente ai piedi, domandandogli grazia. Essendo andato in Germania, l'imperatore nel vedere al suo approssimarsi due Angeli che lo decoravano d'una croce d'oro, balzato dal trono, l'abbracciò, lo rivesti delle insegne reali e gli fece dono del braccio di san Vito. Eppure l'empio fratello, a istigazione della madre, dopo averlo avuto a tavola, lo uccise con dei complici, in chiesa, mentre pregava, ben prevedendo (il Santo) la morte che gli si preparava. Il suo sangue si vede ancora spruzzato sui muri, e per divina vendetta, la madre snaturata fu inghiottita dalla terra, e gli assassini perirono miseramente in diverse maniere.

Che e questa divisione? poiché tra i primi precetti abbiamo : « Onora tuo padre e tua madre , Exod. 20, 12 ; e lo stesso Signore dice : «Vi do la mia pace, vi lascio la mia pace» Joann. 4, 27 . Che significa portata piuttosto la spada sulla terra, e il figlio diviso dal padre, e la figlia dalla madre, e la nuora dalla suocera, e che l'uomo si avrà per nemici quelli della propria casa? Da ciò sembra risultare una sentenza pubblica proferita contra la pietà famigliare. Ché dappertutto odii, dappertutto lotte, e la spada di Dio che separa con violenza i1 padre dal Aglio, la faglia dalla madre.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

La spada è la più temprata di tutte le armi ; con essa si esercita il diritto del potere, la severità del giudizio, e il castigo del misfatti. Che la predicazione del nuovo Vangelo sia designata sotto il nome di quest'arma, è attestato frequentemente nei profeti. Noi dunque ci ricorderemo che la parola di Dio è appellata una spada ; questa spada è stata portata sulla terra, cioè la predicazione di esso (Vangelo) ha penetrato i cuori degli uomini. Succede allora grave dissensione nella stessa casa, e quelli della propria casa diverranno i nemici dell'uomo nuovo; perché questi diviso da loro per la parola di Dio, gioirà di rimanere internamente ed esternamente, cioè col corpo e coll'anima, nella novità dello spirito.

Perché dopo aver ordinate d'abbandonare tutto ciò che di più caro si ha nel mondo, aggiunse : «Chi non prende la sua croce, e mi segue, non è degno di me» Matth. 10, 38.; perché: «Quelli che sono di Cristo, hanno crocifisso il loro corpo coi vizi e colla concupiscenza» Gal. 5, 24. Ed e indegno di Cristo chi non prende la sua croce, mediante la quale soffriamo con lui, moriamo con lui, siamo seppelliti con lui e risuscitiamo con lui, e segue il Signore in questo mistero di fede, riportando vittoria colla novità dello spirito.

Wenceslaus, Duke of Bohemia, was the son of a Christian father, Duke Wratislaus I., and an heathen mother named Drahomira. He had for his grandmother a most holy woman, named Ludmilla, who trained him up in godliness. He was a man eminent in all graces, and one who carefully held his virginity unsullied throughout the whole course of his life. His mother seized the supreme power by the foul murder of Ludmilla, and lived foully with her younger son Boleslaus, and the nobles roused thereby to indignation, and wearied with her tyranny and wicked government, cast off the yoke of both of them, and hailed Wenceslaus in the city of Prague as their King.

He ruled his kingdom by his virtues rather than by force. To the orphaned, the widowed, and the destitute he was very charitable, so that some whiles in the winter he carried firewood to the needy on his own shoulders. He helped oftentimes to bury the poor, he set captives free, and went many times to the prisons at the dead of night to comfort with money and advice them that were detained therein. To a Prince of so tender an heart it was a great grief to be behoven to condemn any to death, however guilty. For Priests he had a most earnest respect, and with his own hands sowed the corn and pressed the grapes for the bread and wine which they were to use for the Sacrifice. He would walk round the Church by night with bare feet upon the snow and ice, leaving behind him bloody footprints that warmed the ground.

As his Body-guard he had angels. For when Radislaus, Prince of Gurinna, invaded Bohemia, and Wenceslaus, to save the effusion of his people's blood, went out to meet him in single combat, (two) angels were seen serving him with arms, and heard to say to the adversary Strike not. Therefore, his enemy was stricken with terror, fell down in reverence before him, and begged his forgiveness. When he went to Germany, the Emperor saw two angels carrying a golden Cross before him as he drew nigh him, and arose from his throne, embraced him in his arms, created him a King, and gifted him with the arm of the holy (Martyr) Vitus. Nevertheless, his godless brother, at the exhortation of their mother, bade him to a feast, (given on account of the birth of his son,) and when Wenceslaus, with a foreboding of the death prepared for him, went afterwards into the Church, and was praying there, (Boleslaus followed him thither,) together with some accomplices of his crime, and (when they had wounded him,) despatched him with his own hand, running him through the body with a lance. What meaneth such division in the earth, by reason of the Lord's coming? Amongst the foremost commandments of the Law we have received this: Honour thy father and thy mother. And the Lord himself said: Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you. What meaneth this sword sent upon the earth? Why is father set at variance against son, and daughter against mother, and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law? Why shall a man's foes be they of his own household? From all this it might seem that open sanction is given to the neglect of natural duties―hatred everywhere, warfare everywhere, the sword of the Lord furiously raging between father and son, mother and daughter.

The sharpest weapon of all weapons is the sword, whereby is enforced the law of might, the severity of judgment, the punishment of sinners.
