Che fece la regina Ester, non si offrì forse alla morte per liberare il suo popolo dal pericolo (cosa in sé bella e nobile) esponendosi intrepida alla collera d'un re crudele? Anzi lo stesso re dei Persiani, sebbene dall'animo feroce ed orgoglioso, ricordatosi che un Israelita aveva scoperto il complotto ordito contro la sua persona, credé sua gloria interessarsi a salvare il popolo Ebreo dalla schiavitù, e dal massacro, e di non risparmiare l'istigatore di sì odiosa persecuzione. Riconoscendo poi che i perfidi consigli avevano disonorato il suo regno, condannò alla forca colui (Amata) che riguardava secondo dopo di sé e primo fra tutti gli amici.

Cap. 16.
L'amicizia dunque lodevole è quella che osserva l'onestà, da preferirsi senza dubbio alle ricchezze, agli onori, ai poteri; però non è da anteporsi all'onestà, ma segue l'onestà. Quale fu quella di Gionata, il quale per l'amicizia si esponeva e allo sdegno del padre e al .pericolo della vita. Quale fu quella di Achimelech, il quale per i doveri di gratuita ospitalità stimò che valeva meglio morire che tradire un amico fuggitivo. Niente dunque è da preferirsi all'onestà; e la Scrittura ce lo ricorda, affinché essa non venga sacrificata al culto dell'amicizia.

A questo proposito i filosofi muovono più questioni: S'è permesso o no, a causa d'un amico e per sua sollecitazione, di prendere partito contro la propria patria: se si può cessare d'essere leale per favorire e fare gl'interessi dell'amicizia. E la Scrittura dice bene: «Dardo e spada e saetta acuta è un uomo che attesta il falso contro il suo amico» Prov. 25,18. Ma considera bene l'asserto della proposizione. Essa non condanna già la testimonianza, ma la falsa testimonianza resa contro l'amico. Che fare pertanto se la causa di Dio, se la causa della patria costringa uno a rendere testimonianza? Si devono forse per l'amicizia sacrificare i doveri della religione, e il vizio è da preferirsi alla carità?

Quel che abbiamo letto quest'oggi ci mostra che le azioni umane di Cristo contengono dei misteri divini, e che nelle cose visibili egli compiva delle opere invisibili. «Entrò, dice (l'Evangelista), in una barchetta, e andò all'altra riva, e venne nella sua città» Matth. 9,1. Non è egli forse quello stesso che, risospinte le acque, mise a nudo gli abissi del mare, affinché il popolo d'Israele attraversasse a piedi asciutti, fra le onde stupite, la gola stretta formata dalle acque sospese quasi montagne? Non è forse quello stesso che appianò i vortici del mare sotto i piedi di Pietro, così che l'elemento liquido prestasse un solido appoggio ai passi d'un uomo?
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Noi non conosciamo altro Dio fuori del Signore, in cui speriamo

The Philosophers have started diverse questions whether friendship can, or cannot justify disloyalty to a man's own country whether friendship can, or cannot justify serving a friend at the cost of breach of faith. Scripture indeed saith A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour, is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow. Prov. xxv. 18. But mark that what is here condemned is not witness by itself, but false witness. How if a man be compelled to give such witness, for the sake of God or for the sake of his country? Ought friendship to outweigh religion Is not to say this, as much as to say that a sinful weakness is to outweigh a duty?

The Evangelist saith Jesus “entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into His Own city.” Was not This He Who had once parted the waves hither and thither, and made the dry ground appear at the bottom of the sea, so that His people Israel passed dry-shod between masses of water standing still, as through an hollow glen in a mountain? Was not This He Who made the depths of the sea solid under the feet of Peter, so that the watery path offered a firm way for human footsteps?
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. We know no strange God before the Lord. In Him we trust.
* He despiseth us not, neither putteth He away His salvation from our nation.
