Studióse considerémus, fratres, diligénter commendémus memóriæ hoc tam grande mandátum. Quis enim mandávit? cujus sunt Angeli? cujus mandátis obtémperant? cujus obédiunt voluntáti? Nempe Angelis suis mandávit de te, ut custódiant te in ómnibus viis tuis. Nec cunctántur quin étiam in mánibus tollant te. Summa ergo Majéstas mandávit Angelis, et Angelis suis mandávit. Quid sub tantis custódibus timeámus? Nec superári nec sedúci, minus autem sedúcere possunt, qui custódiunt nos in ómnibus viis nostris. Fidéles sunt, prudéntes sunt, poténtes sunt: quid trepidámus? Tantum sequámur eos, adhæreámus eis, et in protectióne Dei cæli commorémur. Sul Salmo Qui habitat.
Ha dato ordine ai suoi Angeli per te Sal 90,11. Meravigliosa degnazione, e tenerezza di carità veramente grande! Difatti: Chi? a chi? per chi? che cosa ha ordinato? Consideriamolo attentamente, fratelli, e fissiamocelo bene in mente questo ordine sì importante. Chi ha dato l'ordine? di chi sono gli Angeli? a chi obbediscono essi? la volontà di chi eseguiscono? «Egli ha dato ordine ai suoi Angeli per te, che ti custodiscano in tutte le tue vie» Sal 90,11. Né indugiano, anzi ti portano nelle loro mani. La sovrana Maestà dunque ha ordinato agli Angeli, e ai suoi Angeli. Cioè a quegli spiriti sublimi, altrettanto beati che vicini a lui e uniti e veramente famigliari, ha dato ordine per te. Chi sei tu? «Cos'è l'uomo che tu ti ricordi di lui? o il figlio dell'uomo da farne conto?» Sal 8,5; 143,4. Come se «l'uomo non fosse putredine, e il figlio dell'uomo un verme!» Gb 25,6. Ma qual ordine pensi ch'egli abbia dato per te? Che ti custodiscano.

Quanto rispetto ti deve imprimere questa parola, quanta devozione ispirare, quanta confidenza infondere ! Rispetto per la sua presenza, devozione per la benevolenza, confidenza per la custodia. Cammina con cautela, perché gli Angeli, secondo ch'è stato loro ordinato, ti accompagnano in tutte le tue vie. In qualsiasi dimora, in qualsiasi angolo, porta rispetto al tuo Angelo. Tu non osare in sua presenza ciò che non oseresti davanti a me. Dubiti forse della sua presenza, perché non lo vedi? Che (faresti) se lo udissi? che se lo toccassi? che se lo sentissi? Bada che non soltanto colla vista si comprova la presenza delle cose.

Pertanto, fratelli, amiamo in Dio con tenero affetto i suoi Angeli, coi quali dobbiamo essere un giorno suoi coeredi, e che intanto il Padre ha posto accanto a noi come guide e protettori. Di che temere con tali custodi? Essi non possono essere né superati né sedotti, e meno ancora possono sedurci, essi che ci custodiscono in tutte le nostre vie. Sono fedeli, sono prudenti, sono potenti: di che paventiamo? Basta che li seguiamo, siamo attaccati ad essi, e allora saremo sotto la protezione del Dio del cielo. Ogni volta dunque che ti senti stretto da violenta tentazione e minacciato da grave tribolazione, invoca il tuo custode, la tua guida, il tuo aiuto nella necessità e nella tribolazione; gridagli forte e digli; «Signore salvaci, siamo perduti» Mt 8,25.

Il Signore ci insegna che solo riprendendo la natura di bambini entreremo nel regno dei cieli: cioè, distruggendo colla semplicità del bambino i vizi dei corpi e delle anime nostre. Egli poi chiama bambini tutti quelli che credono per la fede alla sua parola. I pargoli infatti obbediscono al padre, amano la madre, non sanno desiderare male al prossimo, non si curano delle ricchezze; non insolentiscono, non odiano, non mentono, credono a ciò che si dice, e quello che odono lo credono vero. Quindi bisogna ritornare alla semplicità dei pargoli; perché in questo stato, portiamo in noi l'immagine dell'umiltà del Signore.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Maccabeo e la sua gente come intesero che venivano espugnate le fortezze;

E che di più pericoloso per il mondo, che il non aver ricevuto Cristo? Lettura 9
«Guardatevi dal disprezzare alcuno di questi piccini che credono in me» Mt 18,10. A quelli principalmente che veramente hanno creduto nel Signore, egli ha imposto il vincolo strettissimo del mutuo amore. Gli Angeli dei piccini infatti vedono Dio ogni giorno: «perché il Figlio dell’uomo è venuto a salvare ciò che era perduto» Mt 18,11. Così il Figlio dell'uomo salva, gli Angeli vedono Dio, e gli Angeli dei piccini presiedono alle preghiere dei fedeli. Che gli Angeli presiedano è dottrina certissima. Gli Angeli dunque offrono ogni giorno a Dio le preghiere dei piccini salvati da Cristo. Perciò è pericoloso disprezzare colui, i cui desideri e domande sono rapportate a Dio eterno e invisibile mediante l'ambito ministero degli Angeli, che formano la sua corte.

But He giveth the name of children to all such as believe by the hearing of faith. Children follow their father, love their mother, know not how to wish evil to their neighbours, are not careful for earthly riches; they insult not, they hate not, they lie not, they believe what they are told, and take for truth what they hear. Us then it behoveth to return to the simpleness of little children, for when we are well rooted therein, we shall so far bear about in ourselves an image of the sublime simpleness of the Lord Jesus.

Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones that believe in Me. He hath laid on us a most meet tie to constrain us to love one another, especially such as indeed believe in the Lord. From these words we see, first, that the Son of Man saveth; secondly, that the Angels do see God; and thirdly, that the Angels of these little ones have the wardship over the prayers of the faithful. That the Angels have this wardship is taught us absolutely. The Angels therefore do every day offer to God the prayers, which they which are saved, do make to Him in the Name of Christ. Therefore it is dangerous for a man to despise them, seeing that these are they by whose watchful service and ministry his wishes and requests are presented before the throne of the eternal and unseen God.

Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow we keep the feast of the holy Confessor Thomas, Bishop of Hereford, in England, of whom mention was made yesterday.
October 3rd 2026, the 21st day of the Moon, were born into the better life:
At Rome, at the Bear-and-Cap, the holy martyr Candidus, (in the third century.) Upon the same day, the holy martyrs Denis, Faustus, Caius, Peter, Paul, and four others, (in the third century.) They originally suffered much under the Emperor Decius, and then, under the Emperor Valerian, were put to a long course of torments by the President Emilian.
Among the ancient Saxons, (in Westphalia,) the two holy (English) brethren, both named Ewald, (about the year 695,) (one surnamed the white, and the other the black.) They were priests, and had gone to preach Christ in that country, where they suffered martyrdom, being murdered by the heathen. A bright light was seen around their bodies by night to show where they were, and of what worthiness.
In Africa, holy Maximian, Bishop of Bagaia, who again and again suffered great cruelties at the hands of the Donatists, and was at last thrown off the top of a lofty tower, and left for dead, but afterwards fell asleep in the Lord, famous for his glorious confession.
In Palestine, the holy Confessor Hesychius, (in the fourth century,) a disciple of holy Hilarion, and his companion in his journeyings.
At Brogne, in the diocese of Namur, in Belgium, (in the year 959,) holy Gerard, (Founder and) Abbot, (of the monastery at that place, who introduced a new and most exact discipline into many monasteries of Flanders, Champagne, Lorraine, and Picardy. He reformed some abbeys in Flanders.)
