Teresa del Bambino Gesù, nacque ad Alençon, in Francia, da onorati genitori, ragguardevoli per singolare e costante pietà verso Dio. Fin dalla prima età prevenuta dal divino Spirito, bramava di farsi religiosa. E seriamente promise, ch'ella non avrebbe negato a Dio niente di ciò ch'egli stesso le fosse sembrato domandare: promessa che cercò di osservare fedelmente fino alla morte. All'età di cinque anni, perduta la madre, si affidò interamente alla provvidenza di Dio sotto la vigilante custodia del padre amantissimo, e delle sorelle maggiori; alla cui scuola, Teresa esultò come un gigante nel percorrere la via della perfezione. A nove anni viene affidata in educazione alle monache Benedettine di Lisieux, dove fu vista distinguersi nella scienza delle cose divine. A dieci anni, la tormentò lungamente una misteriosa e grave malattia, da cui fu miracolosamente liberata coll'aiuto, come narra ella stessa, della beatissima Vergine, che le apparve sorridente, e che si studiò d'invocare con una novena sotto il titolo di nostra Signora della Vittoria. Allora, ripiena d'angelico fervore, cercò di prepararsi con somma diligenza al sacro convito in cui si riceve Cristo.

Come gustò il pane eucaristico, parve che attingesse una fame insaziabile di questo cibo celeste; onde, come ispirata, pregava Gesù, che le cambiasse in amarezza ogni mondana consolazione. Perciò accesa di amore verso il tenerissimo Cristo Signore e verso la Chiesa, nulla ebbe più a cuore, che di entrare nell'ordine delle Carmelitane Scalze, affinché coll'annegazione di sé, e co' suoi sacrifici potesse venire in aiuto dei sacerdoti, dei missionari e di tutta la Chiesa, e guadagnare a Gesù Cristo innumerevoli anime: cosa che, già prossima a morire, promise di fare presso Dio. Per mancanza di età, incontrò molte difficoltà nell'abbracciare la vita religiosa, ma superatele con incredibile fortezza d'animo, all'età di quindici anni, entrò felicemente nel Convento di Lisieux. Là Dio dispose ammirabili ascensioni nel cuore di Teresa, che, imitata la vita nascosta della Vergine Maria, come orto irrigato, germogliò fiori di ogni virtù, e specialmente di esimia carità verso Dio e verso il prossimo.

Per piacere sempre più all'Altissimo, avendo letto nelle Sacre Scritture quel monito: «Chi è piccolo venga a me» Prov. 9,4, volle essere piccola di spirito, onde si abbandonò per sempre con figliale fiducia a Dio, come a Padre amantissimo. Ella insegnò agli altri questa via dell'infanzia spirituale, secondo la dottrina del Vangelo, specialmente alle novizie, che per obbedienza aveva accettato a formare all'amore delle virtù religiose, e così ripiena di zelo apostolico, mostrò al mondo, gonfio di superbia e amante delle vanità, la via della semplicità evangelica. Ma lo Sposo Gesù l'accese del desiderio di soffrire internamente così nell'anima come nel corpo. Inoltre osservando che la carità di Dio era affatto trascurata, presa da grandissimo dolore, due anni prima di morire, si offrì vittima all'amore di Dio misericordioso. Allora, come racconta ella medesima, fu ferita dalla fiamma del fuoco celeste: onde, consunta dalla carità, rapita in estasi, ripetendo ferventissimamente: Dio mio, ti amo; nel ventiquattresimo anno di età, il 30 Settembre del 1897 se ne volò allo Sposo. E quello che aveva promesso morendo, che avrebbe mandato sulla terra una pioggia perenne di rose, ricevuta in cielo, lo adempì realmente con innumerevoli miracoli e lo adempie continuamente. Il Sommo Pontefice Pio XI dopo averla ascritta fra i Beali e, dopo due anni, nella ricorrenza del gran giubileo, annoveratala fra le Sante, la stabilì e dichiarò speciale Patrona di tutte le Missioni.

Sermone 37, sulla festa dell'Epifania 7, cap. 3,4
Tutta la somma della cristiana sapienza, o dilettissimi, consiste non nella facondia del dire, non nell'accortezza del disputare, non nella bramosia della lode e della gloria, ma nella vera e volontaria umiltà, che il Signore Gesù Cristo e scelse ed insegnò con ogni forza dal seno della Madre fino al supplizio della Croce. Infatti allorquando i suoi discepoli, come dice l'Evangelista, disputavano chi di loro sarebbe il più grande nel regno dei cieli, egli chiamato un bambino, lo pose in mezzo a loro, e disse: «In verità vi dico, che se non vi cambierete e non diventerete come bambini, non entrerete nel regno dei cieli. Chi dunque si farà umile come questo piccino, lui sarà il più grande nel regno dei cieli» Matth. 18,1. Cristo ama l'infanzia, ch'egli per il primo prese e coll'anima e col corpo. Cristo ama l'infanzia, maestra dell'umiltà, regola dell'innocenza, modello della mitezza. Cristo ama l'infanzia, a cui indirizza costumi dei più grandi, a cui riduce l'età dei vecchi; e spinge al suo esempio quelli che sublima al regno eterno.

Affinché poi riusciamo a conoscere pienamente come si possa apprendere sì mirabile cambiamento e con quale mutazione noi si debba ritornare all'età infantile, ci istruisca il beato Paolo con dire: «Non vogliate diventare bambini nell'intelligenza, ma siate bambini nella malizia» 1Cor. 14,20. Non dunque ai giuochi e alle cose imperfette della prima infanzia dobbiamo noi tornare, ma prendere da essa qualche cosa che convenga anche agli anni maturi, in guisa che il passaggio del turbamento sia veloce, e pronto il ritorno alla pace: nessun ricordo ci sia dell'offesa, nessuna cupidigia di dignità; ci sia l'amore della carità fraterna, l'eguaglianza naturale. Infatti è gran cosa non sapere di nuocere e non conoscere malignità: poiché fare e rendere ingiuria, è la sapienza di questo mondo; ma non rendere ad alcuno male per male, è l'infanzia della cristiana bontà d'animo.

A questa rassomiglianza dei piccini vi invita, o dilettissimi, il mistero della festa odierna; e questo modello di umiltà vi insinua il bambino Salvatore adorato dai Magi: il quale, per mostrare qual gloria prepara al suoi imitatori, consacrò col martirio i bambini del tempo della sua nascita; cosicché generati a Betlemme, dove nacque Cristo, colla comunanza dell'età andasse congiunta anche quella della passione. Si ami dunque l'umiltà, e si eviti dai fedeli ogni superbia. L'uno a sé preferisca l'altro e nessuno cerchi quel ch'è suo, sibbene quello dell'altro; cosicché abbondano in tutto l'affetto della benevolenza, in nessuno si trovi il veleno dell'invidia: poiché «chi si esalta sarà umiliato, e chi si umilia sarà esaltato» Matth. 23,12, secondo che attesta lo stesso Signore nostro Gesù Cristo, che col Padre e collo Spirito Santo vive e regna Dio per i secoli dei secoli. Reading 4
Theresa of the Child Jesus was born in Alencon in France. Her parents were estimable people, well known for their piety and their love of God. From her earliest childhood, endowed by a special grace of the Holy Ghost, she yearned to enter the religious life. She promised God with the utmost sincerity that she would deny him nothing he might ask of her. She kept this promise faithfully to the end of her life, although she had to suffer a great deal to keep it. Her mother died when Theresa was but five years old. From then on the child committed herself to the providence of God, under the vigilant care of a most tender father and her elder sisters. Under their teaching Theresa raced as gayly strong as a young giant along the way of perfection. At the age of nine she was sent to school at Lisieux to the Benedictine nuns, where she made remarkable progress in her knowledge of divine things. In her tenth year she was ill for a long time of a serious and mysterious malady. From this, as she herself relateth, she was delivered only by the power of God himself, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who appeared to her with a smiling countenance, and to whom under the title of our Lady of Victories, she was constantly making novenas. Filled with angelic fervour she prepared herself at this time with the utmost care to receive Christ in the sacred banquet of her first Holy Communion.

After being refreshed for the first time with the Eucharistic Bread Theresa seemed to develop an insatiable hunger for the celestial food. Then, as if by inspiration, she asked Jesus to turn all her earthly consolation into bitterness. After that she burned with a most tender love for Christ the Lord and for his Church. More than anything in the world she wanted to enter the Order of the Discalced Carmelites, where by self-sacrifice she might assist priests, missionaries and the whole Church, and so gain innumerable souls for Christ Jesus. All this, she promised God would do for her, even when apparently she lay at the point of death. Her extreme youth was an obstacle which hindered her entrance upon the religious life. Even this she overcame by her incredible courage of soul. She entered Carmel at Lisieux happily at the age of fifteen. There God fashioned the heart of Theresa in a marvellous way, teaching her to ascend to him step by step. Imitating the hidden life of the Virgin Mary like a well-watered garden she bore flowers of every virtue, especially an abiding love of God and neighbour.

That she might please the most high God to greater degree, when she read in Sacred Scriptures the warning, Whoever is a little one, let him come unto me, she determined to be a little one in spirit. As such she consecrated herself forever with childlike confidence to God, her most loving Father. The way of spiritual childhood, following the teachings of the Gospel, she taught to others, especially to the novices who training in the pursuit of religious virtues she undertook in obedience to her superiors. Overflowing with apostolic zeal she pointed out to a world filled with pride and a love of vanities, the simple way of the Gospels. Meanwhile Jesus, her spouse, inflamed her with a desire to suffer both in soul and in body. Moreover, perceiving that the love of God was everywhere rejected, she became filled with grief and two years before her death, offered herself as a victim of love to the merciful God. She writeth that she was then wounded by a flame of fire from heaven, whereupon she became consumed by love, rapt as it were in ecstasy. Repeating over and over again the fervent words, My God, I love thee, she passed on to her Spouse on the 30th day of September, in the year 1897, at the age of twenty-four years. As she was dying she promised that she would let fall upon earth a ceaseless shower of roses. This promise she hath indeed fulfilled in heaven, and her shower of roses hath continued to this very day. The Sovereign Pontiff Pius XI added her name to the Virgins declared Blessed and two years later, at the time of the great Jubilee, listed her among the Saints. He also appointed and declared her Patroness of all the missions.

Sermo 37, in Epiphaniae solemn 7, cap 3-4
The whole teaching of Christian wisdom consisteth, dearly beloved, not in an abundance of words, not in skill in disputation, not surely in seeking after praise or glory, but rather in seeking after true and voluntary humility. This was the way which the Lord Jesus Christ chose and taught with all his strength from his Mother's womb to his death on the Cross. When the Lord's disciples, as the Evangelist saith, discussed among themselves which should be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, he called a little child and set him in the midst of them, and said: Verily, I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Christ loveth childhood, which state at first he took upon himself, both in his soul and in his body. Christ loveth childhood, for it is the teacher of humility, the rule of innocence, and the type of meekness. Christ loveth childhood, for he formeth the character of the grown man on this model, and bringeth back the latter years of the old to this very state; and he shapeth on this wise those whom he would raise to the kingdom of heaven.

℟. This is one of those wise virgins, whom the Lord found watching, for when she took her lamp, she took oil with her.

Ad Assisi, in Umbria, il natale di san Francésco, Levita e Confessore. Fondatore di tre Ordini, cioè dei Frati Minori, delle Povere Donne, e dei Fratelli e delle Sorelle della Penitenza. La sua vita, piena di santità e di miracoli, fu scritta da san Bonaventura.
Così pure a Corinto il natale dei santi Crispo e Càio, dei quali fa menzione san Pàolo Apostolo, scrivendo ai Corinti.
Ad Atène san Geróteo, discepolo dello stesso beato Pàolo Apostolo.
A Damasco san Piétro, Vescovo e Martire, il quale presso il Principe degli Agareni fu accusato che insegnava la fede di Cristo, e perciò, dopo che gli fu tagliata la lingua e gli furono troncate le mani ed i piedi, fu confitto in croce, e così compì il martirio.
Ad Alessandria i santi Preti e Diaconi Càio, Fàusto, Eusébio, Cheremóne, Lucio e Compagni, dei quali alcuni, nella persecuzione di Valeriàno, divennero Martiri, altri, servendo ai Martiri, ricevettero la mercede dei Martiri.

October 4th 2026, the 22nd day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Assisi, in Umbria, the holy Confessor Francis, (1182-1226,) Founder of the Order of Friars Minor, whose life, full of holiness and miracles, hath been written by St. Bonaventure.
At Corinth, holy Crispus and Caius, (first century,) of whom the holy Apostle Paul maketh mention in writing unto the Corinthians.
In Egypt, the holy brethren Mark and Marcian, (in the year 304,) and a multitude of other holy martyrs which is almost countless, both of men and of women, of old and of young some after stripes and some after horrid torments of diverse kinds were burnt, some cast into the sea, a few beheaded, many starved to death, others crucified (some of these with their head downward), and so earned a most blessed crown of martyrdom.
At Damascus, the holy Bishop and martyr Peter, (in the year 742) he was accused of teaching the faith of Christ, before the Prince of the Hagarenes. His tongue, hands, and feet were cut off, and he was fastened to a cross, and there finished his testimony.

Padre nostro che sei nei cieli, sia santificato il tuo nome; venga il tuo regno, sia fatta la tua volontà, come in cielo così in terra. Dacci oggi il nostro pane quotidiano, rimetti a noi i nostri debiti, come noi li rimettiamo ai nostri debitori e non ci indurre in tentazione, ma liberaci dal male. Amen.
Ave, o Maria, piena di grazia, il Signore è con te. Tu sei benedetta tra le donne e benedetto è il frutto del tuo seno, Gesù. Santa Maria, Madre di Dio, prega per noi peccatori, adesso e nell'ora della nostra morte. Amen.

103:1 Benedici il Signore, o anima mia: * Signore, Dio mio, tu ti sei grandemente glorificato.
103:1 Ti sei rivestito di gloria e di splendore; * avvolto nella luce, come in un manto,
103:2 stendi il cielo come una tenda, * copri di acqua la sua parte superiore;
103:3 monti sopra le nuvole, * cammini sulle ali dei venti;
103:4 fai i tuoi Angeli [come] venti: * e i tuoi ministri [come] fuoco fiammante.
103:5 Tu hai fondato la terra sulle sue basi: * essa non crollerà nei secoli dei secoli.
103:6 L'abisso, come una veste, la ricopre; * le acque sorpassano le montagne.

Salmo 103(13-23) [2]
103:13 Dalle alte tue dimore tu [o Dio] irrighi i monti: * col frutto delle tue opere sarà saziata la terra.
103:14 Tu fai crescere il fieno per le bestie * e gli erbaggi per uso degli uomini:
103:14 per trarre dalla terra il pane, * ed il vino, che rallegra il cuore dell'uomo:
103:15 e perché questi possa con l'olio far risplendere la sua faccia, * e il pane corrobori il cuore dell'uomo.
103:16 Avran nutrimento a sazietà gli alberi della campagna, e i cedri del Libano, che egli ha piantato. * Ivi gli uccelli faranno il loro nido.
103:17 La casa della cicogna domina le altre: * gli alti monti sono per i cervi: le roccie [sono] il rifugio dei ricci.
103:19 Egli fece la luna per segnare i tempi: * il sole conosce il suo tramonto.
103:20 Tu stendesti le tenebre e venne la notte; * in essa andranno attorno tutti gli animali della selva.
103:21 I leoncelli ruggiscono bramosi di preda, * e a Dio chiedono il loro nutrimento.
103:22 Spunta il sole ed essi si ritirano in branco: * e si accovacciano nelle loro tane.
103:23 L'uomo allora uscirà alle sue faccende; * e al suo lavoro fino alla sera.

103:24 Quanto sono grandi le opere tue, o Signore! * Tu hai fatto ogni cosa con sapienza: la terra è piena di tue ricchezze.
103:25 Ecco qui il mare grande, spazioso nelle sue braccia: * ivi sono rettili senza numero,
103:26 animali piccoli e grandi. * Ivi scorreranno le navi,
103:27 e quel dragone che tu formasti, perché vi scherzi. * Tutti essi attendono da te, che tu dia loro il cibo a suo tempo.
103:28 Tu lo dai loro, ed essi lo raccolgono: * tu allarghi la mano, e tutti sono ricolmi di bene.
103:29 Ma se tu volgi altrove la faccia, restano turbati: * se ritiri da loro lo spirito, vengono meno, e ritornano nella loro polvere.
103:30 Manderai il tuo spirito, e saranno creati: * e rinnoverai la faccia della terra.
103:31 Sia celebrata in eterno la gloria del Signore, * il Signore si rallegrerà nelle sue opere:
103:32 Egli che mira la terra, e la fa tremare: * che tocca i monti, e gettan fumo.
103:33 Io canterò al Signore per tutta la mia vita: * inneggerò al mio Dio, finché sarò.
103:34 Gli siano gradite le mie parole: * quanto a me, porrò le mie delizie nel Signore.
