Ebbene quanto valoroso Giosuè di Nave, che in una sola battaglia sconfisse e fece prigioni cinque re con tutta la loro gente! E poi incalzando la battaglia contro i Gabaoniti, temendo che la notte non impedisse la vittoria, con gran fede e coraggio gridò: Fermati, o sole, ed esso si fermò sino a vittoria completa. Gedeone con trecento uomini trionfò d'una armata numerosa e di un formidabile nemico. Gionata, ancor adolescente, si distinse per bei fatti d'arme.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Che dire dei Maccabei? Ma prima dirò di quella turba di antenati i quali, essendo pronti a combattere per il tempio di Dio e le loro sante leggi, attaccati con inganno dai nemici in giorno di sabato, amarono piuttosto esporsi senz'armi ai loro colpi che opporre resistenza per non violare il sabato. Così tutti lieti si offrirono alla morte. Ma i Maccabei considerando che seguendo questo esempio sarebbe perita tutta la nazione, provocati pur essi di sabato a battaglia, vendicarono la strage dei virtuosi loro fratelli. Ond'è che poi irritato il re Antioco, avendo acceso la guerra per mezzo de' suoi capitani Lisia, Nicanore e Gorgia riportò tale rotta insieme colle sue truppe Orientali e Assire, che ne furono abbattuti in mezzo al campo quarantottomila da soli tremila.

Eleazaro avendo osservato un elefante più alto di tutti gli altri, e coperto della gualdrappa reale, credendo che portasse il re, accelerata la corsa, si precipitò in mezzo alla legione: e, gettato via lo scudo, faceva strage con tutte due le mani, finché giunto alla bestia, vi si cacciò sotto e la uccise colla spada. Perciò cadendo la bestia oppresse Eleazaro, onde ne morì. Quanto coraggio in lui! prima perché non teme la morte; poi perché, circondato dalle legioni nemiche, si slancia nel folto delle file, spezza il battaglione, e reso più audace per il disprezzo della morte, getta lo scudo, prende la spada con ambe le mani, e, cacciatosi sotto il ventre dell'animale per essere più sicuro del colpo, gli immerge il ferro nel corpo; e rinchiuso più che schiacciato dalla caduta di quello, egli rimane sepolto nel suo trionfo.

Omelia 38 sul Vangelo, dopo il principio
Ricordo di aver detto più volte come spesso nel santo Vangelo sotto il regno dei cieli si designi la Chiesa presente: l'assemblea dei giusti infatti si chiama regno dei cieli. Perché il Signore ha detto per mezzo di un profeta: «Il cielo è la mia sede» Is. 66,1; e Salomone dice: «L'anima del giusto è la sede della sapienza»; e anche Paolo: dice che «Cristo è la virtù di Dio e la sapienza di Dio» 1Cor. 1,24: ora se Dio è la sapienza, e l'anima del giusto è la sede della sapienza, come d'altra parte il cielo è la sede di Dio, dobbiamo evidentemente conchiudere che l'anima del giusto è un cielo. Donde questa parola del Salmista applicata ai santi predicatori: «I cieli narrano la gloria di Dio» Ps. 18,1.

Così il regno dei cieli è la Chiesa dei giusti: siccome i loro cuori non ambiscono nulla di terrene, e siccome sospirano verso le cose dell'alto, così il Signore regna già in essi come nei cieli. Quindi si dice: «Il regno dei cieli è simile a un re che celebrava le nozze del suo figlio» Matth. 22,1. La vostra carità comprende chi è questo Re, padre d'un figlio egualmente Re: lo stesso, senza dubbio, cui s'indirizza il Salmista: «O Dio, dà il tuo giudizio al Re, e la tua giustizia al figlio del Re» Matth. 22,2; Ps. 71,1. «Che celebrava le nozze del suo figlio». Effettivamente Dio Padre celebrò le nozze di Dio suo Figlio quando lo univa alla natura umana nel seno della Vergine, quando egli voleva che questo (Figlio), Dio avanti i secoli, si facesse uomo nel corso dei secoli.

Ma perché l'unione nuziale ordinaria richiede due persone, lungi da noi il pensare che la personalità di Gesù Cristo, nostro Redentore, Dio e uomo insieme, risulti dall'unione di due persone. Noi affermiamo, è vero, ch'egli è di due nature e sussiste in due nature; ma crederlo composto di due persone, lo respingiamo come una bestemmia. Egli è dunque più chiaro e sicuro il dire che il Padre· ha celebrato le nozze del Re suo Figlio, allorquando, mediante il mistero dell'incarnazione, gli unì la santa Chiesa. Il seno poi della Vergine Madre fu il letto nuziale di questo sposo. Onde il Salmista canta ancora: «Nel sole ha posto la sua dimora, ed esso è come uno sposo che esce dalla sua camera nuziale» Ps. 18,5.

Gideon, with three hundred men, won the victory over the vast people, and the savage enemy. The lad Jonathan waxed valiant in fight.

What was the valour of Judas the Maccabean leader we may judge by the type of one of his men. When Eleazar saw an elephant bigger than the rest, and adorned with the King's harness, he thought that the King was riding thereon, and he threw himself into the midst of the enemy, and cast away his shield and slew on either hand until he was come to the beast, and ran underneath it, and killed it with his sword, and so the beast fell upon Eleazar and crushed him, and he died. What valour was here To begin with, he feared not to die, and when the enemy surrounded him he cast himself into the midst of their ranks, pierced their column, and becoming all the fiercer through his mockery of death, he threw away his shield and upheld with both hands the huge bulk of the wounded monster beneath which he had gone the better to spite it, so that when he died with it he might well have been said not so much to be crushed as to be swallowed up in victory.

I remember that I have often said that, in the Holy Gospel, the Church as she now is, is called the kingdom of heaven, for the kingdom of heaven is indeed the assembly of the righteous. The Lord hath said by the mouth of His Prophet: The heaven is My throne. Isa. lxvi. 1. Solomon saith: The throne of wisdom is the soul of the righteous. And Paul saith that Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 1 Cor. i. 24. From these passages we may clearly gather that if wisdom be God, and wisdom's throne be the soul of the righteous, and God's throne be the heaven, then the soul of the righteous is heaven. Hence also the Psalmist saith, speaking of holy preachers: The heavens declare the glory of God. xviii. 2.

The marriage union is the union of two persons, but God forbid that we should imagine that the One Person of our Redeemer Jesus Christ, Who is both God and Man, is formed by a union of an human person with a Divine Person. We profess concerning Him that He is of, and in two natures, but we shrink from the blasphemy of saying that He is compounded of two persons. It will therefore be clearer and safer to say that the marriage which the Father made for His Royal Son was the wedding Him, through the mystery of the Incarnation, to His mystic Bride the Holy Church. The womb of the Maiden Mother was the marriage chamber in which this union took place. Hence it is that the Psalmist saith: In the sun hath He set His tabernacle, Who is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber. xviii. 6.2

A Messina, in Sicilia, il natale dei santi Martiri Plàcido Monaco (uno dei discepoli del beato Benedétto Abate), dei suoi fratelli Eutichio e Vittorino, e della loro sorella Flàvia Vergine, e così pure di Donàto, Firmàto Diacono, Fàusto ed altri trenta Monaci, i quali tutti, per la fede di Cristo, furono uccisi dal corsaro Manùca.
Così pure presso Smirne il natale del beato Traséa, Vescovo di Euménia, consumato col martirio.
Ad Auxerre la deposizione dei santi fratelli Firmàto Diacono e Flaviàna Vergine.
A Tréviri i santi Martiri Palmàzio e Compagni, i quali nella persecuzione di Diocleziàno, sotto il Preside Riziovàro, subirono il martirio.

Martyrology {anticipated}
October 5th 2026, the 23rd day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Messina, in Sicily, (in the year 546,) the holy monk Placidus, a disciple of the blessed Abbot Benedict, his brothers Eutychius and Victorinus, and the Virgin Flavia, their sister, along with Donatus, the Deacon Firmatus, Faustus, and thirty other monks, all martyrs, who were massacred for Christ's faith's sake, by the pirate Manucha.
Upon the same day, (in the year 171,) blessed Thraseas, Bishop of Eumenia, who achieved his martyrdom at Smyrna.
At Trier, the holy martyrs Palmatius and his Companions, who underwent martyrdom under the President Rictiovarus, in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian.
On the same day, the holy Virgin Charitina, under the Emperor Diocletian and the Consular Domitius. She was tormented with fire, and cast into the sea, whence she came forth unharmed, then her hands and feet were cut off, and her teeth shaken, and she gave up her soul in prayer to God.
At Auxerre, the holy Deacon Firmatus, (in the fifth or sixth century,) and the Virgin Flaviana his sister.
At Ravenna, the holy Confessor Marcellinus, Bishop of (that see.)
At Valence, in Gaul, holy Apollinaris, (about the year 520,) Bishop (of that see) his life was famous for his graces, and his death was marked by signs and wonders.

At Rome, the holy widow Galla, daughter of the Consul Symmachus after the death of her husband she passed many years at the church of blessed Peter, intent upon prayer, alms, fastings, and other holy works. Holy Pope Gregory hath written of her right blessed passage hence.
