Infatti il padre suo Flaviano, ch'era stato prefetto sotto Giuliano Apostata, empiissimo tiranno, si vide segnato col marchio degli schiavi e deportato ad Acquapendente, dove mori martire. Sua madre Dafrosa fu prima rinchiusa in casa colle figlie perché vi morissero di fame; poi, la madre, fu relegata fuori di Roma e decapitata. Morti i pii genitori, Bibiana insieme colla sua sorella Demetria è spogliata di tutti i beni; Aproniano pretore della Città, avido di denaro, perseguita le due sorelle; le quali, destituite affatto d'ogni soccorso umano, sono mirabilmente nutrite da Dio che dà cibo ai famelici, sì che il persecutore rimane grandemente stupito al vederle ancora più forti e floride.

Nondimeno Aproniano cerca di persuaderle di onorare gli dèì dei Gentili promettendo loro la restituzione delle ricchezze perdute, il favore dell'imperatore e distintissime nozze. Che se faranno diversamente, le minacciava della prigione, delle verghe, della scure. Ma quelle, né colle carezze né colle minacce scosse dalla vera Fede, disposte piuttosto a morire che macchiarsi delle superstizioni pagane, respingono con sdegno e costanza l'empie profferte del pretore. Perciò Demetria, caduta all'improvviso sotto gli occhi di Bibiana, si addormentò nel Signore: e Bibiana fu affidata a una donna scaltrissima, Rufina, perché cercasse di sedurla; ma ella istruita fin dall'infanzia a custodire la legge cristiana e illibato il flore della verginità, superando se stessa, trionfò delle insidie della donna e deluse la perfidia del pretore.

Così Rufina non riuscendo a smuoverla dal suo santo proposito né colle scaltre parole né colle battiture onde la caricava tutti i giorni, deluso il pretore nelle sue speranze, acceso di rabbia perché perdeva tempo in Bibiana, comanda ai littori di spogliarla, di attaccarla colle mani legate a una colonna, e di batterla con sferze guernite di piombo finché rese l'anima. Il suo santo corpo gettato ai cani restò due giorni sulla piazza del Toro, ma, divinamente preservato, restò intatto; il prete Giovanni poi lo seppellì di notte accanto alla tomba della madre e della sorella presso il palazzo di Licinio, dove si vede ancora al presente una chiesa dedicata a Dio sotto il nome di santa Bibiana, e che Urbano VIII restaurò dopo essersi ritrovati i corpi delle sante Bibiana, Demetria e Dafrosa, ch'egli ripose sotto l'altar maggiore.

Il regno dei cieli, fratelli carissimi, si dice simile a cose terrene, affinché l'anima si elevi da ciò che conosce a ciò che non conosce affatto, così che dall'esempio delle cose visibili si sollevi alle invisibili, e come incitata da ciò che ha appreso, s'infiammi a tal punto da imparare ad amare, per mezzo dell'affetto per un bene conosciuto, anche beni sconosciuti. Ecco dunque che il regno dei cieli si paragona ad un tesoro nascosto in un campo. L uomo che l'ha trovato, lo tiene nascosto e, per la gioia di possederlo, va a vendere tutto ciò che possiede e compra quel campo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Ed in ciò si deve anche notare che il tesoro trovato viene nascosto perché sia conservato: poiché non riuscirà a difendere dagli spiriti maligni l'ardore del desiderio che sente per il cielo, colui che non lo sottrae alle umane lodi. Infatti nella vita presente ci troviamo come in una via, lungo la quale ci dirigiamo alla patria. Gli spiriti maligni ci tendono insidie lungo la strada, come ladruncoli. Portare dunque pubblicamente un tesoro per via è come desiderare di essere derubati. Ora io dico questo, non perché il prossimo non veda le nostre opere buone, poiché sta scritto: «Vedano le vostre opere buone e glorifichino il Padre vostro che è nei cieli»; ma perché non cerchiamo lodi dall'esterno per quello che facciamo. L'opera quindi sia pure pubblica, ma rimanga occulta l'intenzione; affinché noi possiamo dare al prossimo l'esempio di un'opera buona, e tuttavia con l'intenzione, per la quale cerchiamo di piacere soltanto a Dio, desideriamo sempre il segreto.

Bibiana was a Roman maiden, distinguished on account of the nobility of her family, but now far more distinguished for her confession of Christ. In the reign of the foul tyrant, Julian the Apostate, her father Flavian, although he was an ex-Praefect, was branded as a slave and banished to Acquapendente, not far from Rome, where he soon died a martyr for his faith. His wife, Dafrosa, and his two daughters, Bibiana and Demetria, were first imprisoned in their own house, with the idea of starving them to death; but the mother was afterwards taken outside the city and beheaded. Bibiana and her sister Demetria, after the death of their holy parents, were stripped of all they had in the world. Apronianus, Praetor of the city, who hankered after their property, continued to persecute them, but although they were destitute of all human support, God, Who giveth bread to the hungry, fed them, and kept them in health, life, and strength, to the wonder of their enemies.

But neither promises nor threats availed, for they remained firm in the faith, being resolved rather to die than to pollute themselves by doing according to the deeds of the heathen; and, as for the iniquity of the Praetor, they loathed it continually. At length the strength of Demetria gave way, and she fell down suddenly, and died in the Lord, before the eyes of her sister Bibiana. Then Bibiana was put into the hands of an artful woman named Rufina, to seduce her if possible; but she had known the law of Christ from her childhood, and kept the lily of her purity undefiled, triumphing over the efforts of that vile person, and disappointing the lust of the Praetor.

Then, when Rufina saw that her false words availed not, she took to blows, and scourged Bibiana daily, but the saint was not staggered in her holy resolution. At last the Praetor, mad with baffled lust, when he found his labour was thrown away, ordered his lictors to strip her naked, hang her up by the hands to a pillar, and flog her to death with whips weighted with lead. When all was over, her sacred body was thrown out for the dogs to eat. It lay two days in the Forum Tauri, but the animals would not touch it; and, at last, a Priest, named John, took it, and buried it by night beside the graves of her mother and sister, near the Licinian Palace. This is the place where there is still a church, dedicated in the name of St. Bibiana. When this church was being restored by Urban VIII., the bodies of these three holy women, Bibiana, Demetria, and Dafrosa, were found, and were re-buried under the High Altar.

And herein we must remark that the treasure, when once it hath been found, is hidden to keep it safe. He whose intimate yearnings after God are not hidden from the praise of men, is open thereby to the attacks of evil spirits. In this life we are, as it were, journeying homewards on a road beset by evil spirits who are like highwaymen. He therefore inviteth robbery who carrieth his treasure ostentatiously. Doubtless our neighbour should be able to see our good works, as it is written: “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” But this is not to be understood to mean that we are to seek the praise of men by what we do. Rather, let us in such wise work in the open that the inner intention of devotion is not advertised. So we shall give an example to our neighbour, and yet keep hidden, except from the sight of God, our purpose of pleasing him.

La beata Ilària poi, avendo seppellito i corpi dei figli, poco dopo, pregando sul loro sepolcro, fu presa dai pagani, e, rinchiusa in carcere, passò al Signore.

Martyrology {anticipated}
December 3rd 2026, the 23rd day of the Moon, is commemorated the birth into the better life:

In the island of San-Chan, in the Canton River, in China, holy Francis Xavier of the Society of Jesus, Apostle of the Indies, illustrious for the conversion of the Gentiles, for gifts and miracles, who died, (in the year 1552,) full of good works and labours, upon this present 2nd day of December, but his feast is kept upon the morrow by order of Alexander VII.
In Judea, the holy prophet Zephaniah, (in the seventh century B.C. He is the ninth of the twelve minor prophets.)
At Rome, the holy martyrs the Tribune Claudius, his wife Hilaria, their sons Jason and Marus, and seventy soldiers. The Emperor Numerian commanded a great stone to be tied to Claudius and that he should be cast into the river the soldiers and the sons of Claudius he also caused to be put to death. The blessed Hilaria buried the bodies of her sons, and was praying at their grave soon after, when she was seized by the heathen, and departed hence to be ever with the Lord, (about the year 257.)
At Tangier, in Morocco, (in the year 398,) the holy martyr Cassian. He had of a long time discharged the office of a public clerk when the thought came to him from heaven that it was an accursed thing to serve for the slaughter of Christians he resigned his office therefore, and under the public profession of a Christian he earned the victory of martyrdom, (in the year 398.)
