Sull'Assunz. della D. V. M.
Chi e quanto grande sia la beata e gloriosa sempre Vergine Maria ci è dichiarato dall'Angelo da parte di Dio quando dice: «Salve, piena di grazia; il Signore è con te: la benedetta tu sei fra le donne» Luc. 1,28. E conveniva che tali doni fossero assicurati alla Vergine, sì da essere piena di grazia lei, che ha dato la gloria ai cielo, il Signore alla terra, che ha fatto risplendere la pace, ha portato la fede alle Genti, un fine ai vizi, una regola di vita, una disciplina per i costumi. E veramente piena, perché mentre agli altri si dona con misura, in Maria invece discese tutta insieme la pienezza della grazia. Veramente piena, perché sebbene la grazia si trovò nei santi Padri e Profeti, non ci fu però nella sua pienezza; in Maria invece discese tutta la pienezza della grazia ch'è in Cristo, sebbene in maniera differente. E perciò dice: «La benedetta tu sei fra le donne»; cioè benedetta più di tutte le altre donne. Ond'è che tutta la maledizione attirata da Eva fu tutta tolta dalla benedizione di Maria. Di lei Salomone nella Cantica, quasi in sua lode dice: «Vieni, colomba mia, immacolata mia. Poiché l'inverno è già passato, la pioggia è cessata e sparita» Cant. 2,10. E poi soggiunge; «Vieni dal Libano, vieni, sarai incoronata» Eccli. 24,5.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Io sono uscita dalla bocca dell'Altissimo, generata prima di ogni altra creatura: son io che ho fatto spuntare nei cieli la luce inesauribile.

Non immeritatamente dunque si invita a venire dal Libano, significandosi per il Libano il candore. Ella infatti era risplendente per i molti meriti e virtù, e più candida della neve, più bianca per i doni dello Spirito Santo, e presentava in tutto la semplicità della colomba; poiché quanto è avvenuto in lei, è tutto purezza e semplicità, tutto verità e grazia; tutto misericordia e giustizia che venne dal cielo; e perciò immacolata, perché al tutto senza macchia. Ella infatti divenne madre, come attesta san Geremia, ma rimanendo vergine. «Il Signore, dice, farà una novità sulla terra una donna chiuderà in sé un uomo» Jerem. 31,22. Novità veramente inaudita, novità delle virtù eccedente ogni altra novità, che un Dio (che il mondo non può contenere, e nessuno vedere senza morire) sia entrato nel seno d'una vergine come in un asilo, senza essere prigioniero di questa corpo; e tuttavia Dio vi sia contenuto tutto intero: e che ne sia uscito lasciando (come dice Ezechiele) la porta del tutto chiusa Ezech. 44,2. Onde si canta di lei nella stessa Cantica «Orto chiuso, fonte sigillata, le tue emanazioni sono un paradiso» Cat. 4,12. Vero giardino di delizie, che aduna tutte le specie di fiori, e i profumi di virtù; e chiuso siffattamente, che né la violenza né l'astuzia possono forzarne l'entrata. Quindi fonte sigillata col sigillo di tutta la Trinità.

Ora la vittoria della Vergine Madre di Dio nella sua Concezione sul crudelissimo nemico del genere umano, la quale le divine scritture, la venerabile tradizione, il sentimento perpetuo della Chiesa, l'accordo singolare dei vescovi e dei fedeli, come pure gli atti insigni e le costituzioni dei sommi Pontefici avevano già meravigliosamente illustrato, Pio IX Pontefice massimo annuendo ai voti di tutta la. Chiesa risolva di proclamarla solennemente col suo supremo e infallibile oracolo. Pertanto l'otto Dicembre dell'anno mille ottocento cinquantaquattro, nella basilica Vaticana, davanti a una immensa assemblea di Padri di santa Romana Chiesa, di Cardinali e di Vescovi anche di lontanissime regioni, plaudendo l'orbe intero, solennemente proclamò e definì: La dottrina che tiene la beatissima Vergine Maria nel primo istante della sua Concezione essere stata, per singolare privilegio di Dio, preservata immune da ogni macchia di colpa originale, essere stata rivelata da Dio, e perciò doversi credere da tutti i fedeli fermamente e invariabilmente.

Nella Presentazione della Madre di Dio
Salve, o Maria, piena di grazia, più santa dei Santi, e più eccelsa dei celi, e più gloriosa dei Cherubini, e più onorevole dei Serafini, e venerabile più d'ogni altra creatura. Salve, o colomba, la quale e ci porti il frutto dell'olivo, e ci annunzi colui per cui siamo preservati dal diluvio spirituale ed è il porto della salvezza; le ali della quale risplendono come l’argento e il cui dorso come il fulgore dell'oro e dei raggi dello Spirito santissimo e illuminatore. Salve, amenissima e razionale paradiso di Dio, dalla sua benignissima ed onnipotente destra piantato quest' oggi ad Oriente, esalante per lui il soave odore del giglio, e germogliante la rosa immarcescibile per la guarigione di quelli che avevano bevuto ad Occidente l'amarezza d'una morte disastrosa e funesta all'anima; paradiso, in cui fiorisce l'albero della vita per la conoscenza della verità, che dona l'immortalità a chi ne avrà gustato. I principi ortodossi, che ti hanno scelta, a preferenza d'ogni splendore di porpora o di oro e di margarite e pietre preziose, per diadema e manto e ornamento solidissimo del loro regno, dirigili nel loro governo tranquillamente e prosperamente. Abbatti e soggioga le nazioni infedeli che bestemmiano contro di te e contro il Dio nato da te; e conferma nella fede il popolo loro soggetto, affinché perseveri, secondo il precetto di Dio, nell'obbedienza e in una dolce dipendenza. On the Assumption
Who and what was the blessed and glorious Mary, always a Virgin, hath been revealed by God by the message of an Angel, in these words: Hail, thou that art full of grace, the Lord is with thee blessed art thou among women. It was fitting that a fullness of grace should be poured into that Virgin who hath given to God glory and to man a Saviour, who hath brought peace to earth, who hath given faith to the Gentiles, who hath killed sin, who hath given law to life, who hath made the crooked ways straight. Verily, she is full of grace. To others grace cometh measure by measure; in Mary grace dwelleth at once in all fullness. Verily, she is full of grace. We believe that the holy Fathers and Prophets had grace; but they were not full of grace. But into Mary came a fullness of all the grace which is in Christ, albeit otherwise than as it is in Him. Therefore is it said: Blessed art thou among women, that is, Blessed art thou above all women. The fulness of blessing in Mary utterly neutralized in her any effects of the curse of Eve. In her praise Solomon writeth in the Song of Songs, ii. 10,: Rise up, my dove, my fair one, for the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. And again: Come from Lebanon, my Spouse, come, thou shalt be crowned. ~iv. 8.

Not unjustly then is she bidden to come from Lebanon, for Lebanon is so named on account of its stainless and glistening whiteness. The earthly Lebanon is white with snow, but the lonely heights of Mary's holiness are white with purity and grace, brilliantly fair, whiter far than snow, sparkling with the gifts of the Holy Ghost she is undefiled like a dove, all clean, all upright, full of grace and truth. She is full of mercy, and of the righteousness that hath looked down from heaven, and therefore is she without stain because in her hath never been any corruption. She hath compassed a man in her womb, saith holy Jeremiah, but she conceived not by the will of fallen man. The Lord, saith the Prophet, hath created a new thing in the earth; a woman shall compass a man. xxxi. 22. Verily, it is a new thing. Martyrology {anticipated}
December 9th 2026, the 29th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Toledo, in Spain, the holy Virgin and martyr Leocadia. In the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian she suffered a terrible imprisonment under Dacian, Prefect of Spain, and when she heard of the grievous torments of blessed Eulalia and the other martyrs, she knelt down in prayer and gave up her unstained spirit to Christ (,in the year 303).
At Carthage, the holy martyr Restitutus, Bishop (of that see,) concerning whom on whose solemn feastday holy Augustine preached a discourse to the people.
Likewise in Africa, the holy martyrs Peter, Successus, Bassian, Primitivus, and twenty others.
At Limoges, in France, (in the year 46,) the holy Virgin and martyr Valeria.
At Verona, holy Proculus, Bishop (of that see, in the fourth century.) In the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian he was buffeted and cudgelled and thrust out of the city, but was at length restored to his own church and fell asleep in peace.
At Pavia, holy Syrus, the first Bishop of that city, who was eminent for the signs and powers of an apostle.
At Apamea, in Syria, blessed Julian, Bishop, who shone with holiness in the time of the Emperor Severus.
At Perigueux, in France, (about the year 586,) the holy Abbot Cyprian, a man of great holiness. (He lived as a hermit in the latter part of his life near Dordogne, at a place now called after him.)
At Nazianzus, (about the year 371,) holy Gorgonia, sister of blessed Gregory the theologian, who hath written of her graces and miracles.
At Grai, in Burgundy, (in the year 1636,) holy Peter Fourier, Canon Regular of Our Saviour, founder of the Canonesses Regular of Our Lady for the education of girls whom, illustrious for his virtues and miracles, Leo XIII added him to the roll of the Saints.
