Dalla Bolla dommatica di Papa Pio IX
Siccome tutto che si riferisce al culto è strettamente legato col suo oggetto, e non può aver consistenza né durata se quest'oggetto è vago e mal definito, perciò i Romani Pontefici nostri predecessori mentre cercavano con ogni cura di accrescere il culto della Concezione, si studiavano insieme di dichiararne ed inculcarne con ogni impegno l'oggetto e la dottrina. Essi infatti hanno chiaramente ed apertamente insegnato trattarsi della festa della Concezione della Vergine, e proscrissero come falsa ed alienissima dalla mente della Chiesa l'opinione di coloro i quali credevano e affermavano non essere proprio la Concezione, ma la santificazione di lei quella che la Chiesa onorava.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Io sono uscita dalla bocca dell'Altissimo, generata prima di ogni altra creatura: son io che ho fatto spuntare nei cieli la luce inesauribile.

Né credettero di dover più usare dei riguardi con coloro che, a scuotere la dottrina dell'immacolata Concezione della Vergine, immaginarono una distinzione fra il primo e il secondo istante della Concezione, e pretendevano celebrarsi bensì la Concezione, ma non nel suo primo istante e momento. Così gli stessi nostri predecessori credettero loro dovere sostenere e difendere con tutte le forze e la festa della Concezione della beatissima Vergine, e il primo istante della sua Concezione sì come vero oggetto del culto. Quindi le parole al tutto decisive, onde Alessandro VII nostro predecessore, dichiarò il vero pensiero della Chiesa, dicendo: Certamente è antica la credenza dei pii fedeli che pensano, che l'anima della beatissima Madre la Vergine Maria, fin dal primo istante della sua creazione e infusione nel suo corpo, fu, per un privilegio e grazia speciale di Dio, in vista dei meriti di Gesù Cristo suo Figlio e Redentore del genere umano, preservata immune da ogni macchia di peccato originale, e che in questo senso onorano e celebrano con solenne rito la festa della sua Concezione.

Ma soprattutto i nostri predecessori si adoperarono con ogni cura, zelo e fatica a mantenere integra la dottrina dell'immacolata Concezione della Madre di Dio. Infatti non solo non tollerarono mai, che questa dottrina venisse da alcuno in alcun modo biasimata o censurata, ma andarono ancora molto più in là, proclamando con chiare e reiterate dichiarazioni: La dottrina colla quale professiamo l'immacolata Concezione della Vergine essere e doversi tenere a buon diritto conforme col culto della Chiesa, ed essere antica e quasi universale, e tale che la Chiesa Romana l'ha presa a favorire e difendere, e di più al tutto degna d'aver un posto nella stessa sacra liturgia e nelle preghiere più solenni. Né contenti di ciò, affinché questa dottrina dell'immacolato Concepimento della Vergine si conservasse intatta, proibirono severissimamente di sostenere sia in pubblico sia in privato l'opinione contraria ad essa dottrina, e vollero che colpita, per così dire, da tanti colpi, non si risollevasse più.

Sulla Presentazione della Madre di Dio
Di quali lodi ti colmeremo, o Maria? O donzella immacolata; o vergine senza macchia; o decoro delle donne, gloria delle fanciulle! O Vergine e madre tutta santa; tu sei benedetta tra tutte le donne; tu illustre per la tua innocenza; tu sei il suggello della verginità. Tu hai espiato la maledizione di Adamo; tu hai pagato il debito di Eva. Tu sei l'offerta purissima di Abele; il meglio delle sue primizie; il sacrificio immacolato ch'egli offriva. Tu quella speranza in Dio ch'Enos non arrossiva di mostrare; tu quella giustizia d'Enoch che comincia sulla terra per passare in una vita più sicura. Tu l'arca di Noè, e, presso Dio, tu ci ottieni il beneficio della seconda rigenerazione. Tu la verga fiorente d'Aronne; tu sei la figlia di David adorna di vesti dalle frange d'oro, risplendente di svariati ornamenti.

Lettura 8
Tu sei lo specchio dei profeti e il termine delle loro profezie. Te Ezechiele, nel suo ardore profetico, chiamò «la porta chiusa» Ezech. 44,22, per la quale nessun uomo passerà mai, all'infuori del Signore Dio solo, il quale conserverà la porta chiusa. Te Isaia, il più eloquente dei profeti, preannunzia la verga di Jesse, da cui spunterà quel fiore, il Cristo Is. 11,1, il quale, estirpati fin dalle radici i germi dei vizi, porrà nel suo campo la pianta della conoscenza di Dio. Te predisse Geremia, dicendo: «Ecco, verranno giorni, dice il Signore, in cui io farò una nuova alleanza colla casa d'Israele e colla casa di Giuda, siccome ho promesso ai loro padri» Jer. 31,31, indicando così la venuta e la nascita del tuo Figlio, e invitando il popolo dei Gentili da tutta la terra ad adorarlo come Dio. Te anche Daniele, l'uomo dei desideri, proclamò qual monte grandioso, dal quale Cristo, pietra angolare, si staccherà per rovinare e ridurre in povere i simulacri del serpente multiforme Dan. 2,45. Te io onoro agnella immacolata, te predico piena di grazia, te canto siccome l'abitazione pura e immacolata di Dio. E certo, « dove abbondò la colpa, sovrabbondò pure la grazia» Rom. 5,20. Per una donna ci venne la morte; per una donna Dio riparerà ogni cosa. Per il serpente ricevemmo un alimento di sapore amaro, ma il suo figlio ci nutrirà di un nuovo alimento d'immortalità. Eva, nostra prima madre, diede in luce Caino, il primo invidioso e malvagio; ma il tuo Figlio unigenito sarà il primogenito della vita e della risurrezione. O prodigio inaudito! O novità ammirabile! O sapienza che nessuna parola potrà esprimere adeguatamente.

The language used in public worship is the necessary offspring of the teaching which it expresseth, and the former can have no safety unless the latter be settled. Wherefore Our Predecessors the Roman Pontiffs, while encouraging the pious love of the faithful for the Conception of the Blessed Virgin, have taken care ceaselessly to inculcate the sinlessness of the same. They have always particularly insisted that the Feast should be observed not in honour of Mary's sanctification, a false opinion, most foreign to the mind of the Church (but which hath nevertheless been maintained by some,) but in honour of her Conception itself.

The same Our Predecessors have likewise resisted the dreams of those who have imagined that in the sinless Conception there were Two Instants, and that the Church celebrateth the Second and not the First. Thou art the clean offering of Abel, chosen out of the firstlings profession thereof to be made at of the flock, a pure sacrifice. Thou art the hope of Enoch, that firm hope that he had in God, and was not ashamed. Thou art the grace that was in Enoch in this life, and his transit to a better. Thou art the Holy Ark of Noah, and the bond of reconciliation with God in a new regeneration. Thou art the exceeding glory of the kingdom and Priesthood of Melchisedech. A Siracusa, in Sicilia, il natale di santa Lucia, Vergine e Martire, nella persecuzione di Diocleziano. Questa nobile Vergine, mentre volevano trascinarla uomini abbominevoli, ai quali, per ordine di Pascàsio Consolare, era stata consegnata perchè dal popolo si facesse oltraggio alla castità di lei, non potè essere smossa da loro in alcun modo, nè con fimi aggiunte, nè con moltissime coppie di buoi; però in seguito, essendo riuscita illesa dalla pece, dalla resina e dall'olio bollente, finalmente, percossa colla spada nella gola, compì il martirio.
Così pure a Moulins, in Frància, il natale di santa Giovànna Francésca Frémiot de Chantal Vedova, Fondatrice dell'Ordine delle Monache della Visitazione di santa Maria; e, illustre per nobiltà di famiglia, per santità di vita, che costantemente condusse in quattro diversi stati, e pel dono di miracoli, dal Sommo Pontefice Cleménte decimoterzo fu ascritta nel numero delle Sante. Il suo sacro corpo fu trasportato in Annecy, nella Savoia, e con solenne pompa tumulato nella prima chiesa del suo Ordine. La sua festa per decreto del Papa Clemènte decimoquarto si celebra dalla Chiesa universale il ventuno Agosto.
Nell'Arménia la passione dei santi Martiri Eustràzio, Aussénzio, Eugénio, Mardàrio ed Orèste, nella persecuzione di Diocleziano. Di essi Eustràzio, prima sotto Lisia, quindi a Sebàste, sotto il Preside Agricolào, insieme con Orèste fu straziato con raffinati tormenti, e gettato in una fornace, ove rese lo spirito; Orèste poi, posto sopra un letto di ferro infuocato, passò al Signore; gli altri presso gli Aràbraci furono straziati con crudelissimi supplizi, sotto il Preside Lisia, e in diversi modi compirono il martirio. I loro corpi, trasportati poi a Roma, furono onorevolmente riposti nella chiesa di sant'Apollinàre.

By command of Paschasius the Consular she was handed over to panders to make a public mock of her chastity, but when they would have led her away they could not move her even with ropes, and not even when these were drawn by many yoke of oxen then they poured upon her boiling pitch, rosin, and oil but these did not hurt her, and at length she was smitten in the neck with a sword, and so finished her testimony, (in the year 303.)
In Armenia, in the same persecution under the Emperor Diocletian, the holy martyrs Eustratius, Auxentius, Eugenius, Mardarius, and Orestes. Eustratius was first put to dreadful torments under Lysias, and afterwards to the like at Sebaste, along with Orestes, under the President Agricolaus, and was then cast into a furnace, wherein he gave up the ghost. Orestes was laid upon an iron bed heated with fire, and so passed away to be ever with the Lord. The others finished their testimony in diverse ways in the country of the Arabraci, after enduring most cruel sufferings under the President Lysias. Their bodies were afterwards brought to Rome and honourably buried in the church of St. Apollinaris.
In the island of Sulcis, off the coast of Sardinia, (in the second century,) under the Emperor Hadrian, the holy martyr Antiochus.
At Cambrai, in Gaul, the holy Confessor Aubert, Bishop (of that see, and of Arras. He was consecrated on March 21, 633, and died in the year 669.)
At Ponthieu, (in Gaul, in the year 669,) the holy Confessor Josse, (King of Brittany and hermit at Ponthieu.)
In the country of Strasbourg, (in the eighth century,) the holy Virgin Othilia. (First Abbess of Hohenburg, of the order of St Benedict, she was daughter of a Duke of Alsace.)
At Moulins, in Gaul, the holy widow Jeane Frances Fremiot de Chantal, (1572-1641,) foundress of the Congregation of Nuns of the Visitation of St. Mary. She was eminent by her noble birth, by the holiness of her life, which she sanctified unceasingly in the four different states of maiden, wife, widow, and nun, and by the grace of working miracles, and Clement XIII enrolled her name among those of the Saints. Her sacred body was translated to Annecy, in Savoy, and there entombed with solemn pomp in the first church of their order. Clement XIV ordered her feast to be kept by the Universal Church upon the 21st day of August.
