Come ce ne avverte la natura del tempo e la consuetudine della nostra devozione, noi vi esortiamo, o dilettissimi, con sollecitudine di pastore, ad osservare il digiuno del decimo mese, affine di offrire a Dio un giustissimo sacrificio di continenza per il conseguito raccolto di tutti i frutti ch'egli ci ha largito. Poiché che v'ha di più efficace del digiuno? osservandolo, noi ci avviciniamo a Dio, e, resistendo al diavolo, superiamo le attrattive del vizio.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Infatti il digiuno fu sempre un alimento per la virtù. Dall'astinenza infine procedono i pensieri casti, le sagge risoluzioni, i consigli più salutari: e, colle volontarie mortificazioni, la carne muore alle male voglie, e lo spirito si rinnova colle virtù. Ma perché la salvezza delle anime nostre non si acquista solo col digiuno, aggiungiamo al nostro digiuno le opere di misericordia verso i poveri. Facciamo servire alla virtù ciò che sottraiamo alla sensualità. L'astinenza di chi digiuna divenga il pasto del povero.

Le parole che ora abbiamo inteso leggere, fratelli carissimi, ci lodano l'umiltà di Giovanni: il quale, pur essendo di tanta virtù da poter essere creduto il Cristo, preferì rimaner saldo al suo posto, e non di essere dall'umana opinione vanamente esaltato più di quello che era. Infatti egli confessò, e non negò: e confessò: «Non sono io il Cristo». Ma dicendo egli: «Non sono» negò, si, quel che non era, ma non negò quello che era: affinché, dicendo la verità, divenisse membro di colui il cui nome egli falsamente non si usurpava. Onde perché non vuole attribuirsi il nome di Cristo, diviene membro di Cristo e mentre si studia di riconoscere umilmente la propria debolezza, merita veramente di partecipare alla di lui grandezza.

Ma quando ci torna alla mente un altro detto del nostro Redentore, le parole che abbiamo letto sollevano in noi una questione molto intricata. Difatti in altro luogo il Signore, richiesto dai discepoli intorno alla venuta di Elia, rispose: «Elia è già venuto, e non lo conobbero, ma fecero contro di lui tutto ciò che vollero; e, se lo volete sapere, proprio Giovanni è Elia» Matt. 17,12. Giovanni poi, richiestone, risponde: «Io non sono Elia». Or come va, fratelli carissimi, che la Verità afferma una cosa, e il profeta della verità la nega? Giacché son cose molto diverse; «Egli è»; e: «Io non sono». Come dunque è egli profeta della verità, se non è d'accordo colle parole della stessa Verità?
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Ecco che il rampollo di Jesse discenderà per la salvezza dei popoli, lui le Genti invocheranno;

Ma se noi cerchiamo d'approfondire la verità, troviamo come ciò che pare contraddittorio non lo è punto. Infatti l'Angelo, parlando di Giovanni, dice a Zaccaria: «Egli andrà dinanzi a lui collo spirito e colla potenza di Elia» Luc. 1,17. E lo dice dover venire collo spirito e colla potenza di Elia, perché, come Elia precederà la seconda venuta del Signore, così Giovanni ha preceduto la prima. E come quello sarà il precursore del Giudice, così questo è stato il precursore del Redentore. Giovanni dunque era Elia per lo spirito, ma nella persona non era Elia. Quindi ciò che il Signore afferma dello spirito, Giovanni lo nega della persona.

The fruits of the year, which is drawing to a close, are now all gathered in, and we most meetly offer our abstinence to God as a sacrifice of thanksgiving. And what can be more useful than fasting, that exercise by which we draw nigh to God, make a stand against the devil, and overcome the softer enticements of sin?

Dearly beloved brethren, the first thing which striketh us in today's Gospel is the lowly-mindedness of John. He was so great that it was thought he might be the Christ; yet he soberly chose rather to seem only what he really was, than to let the belief of men invest him with a dignity which did not belong to him; for he confessed, and denied not, but confessed, I am not the Christ, at the same time he would not deny what he was in reality; and thus his very truth-speaking made him a member of Him Whose title he would not by falsehood take. In that he arrogated not to himself the name of Christ, he became a member of Christ. While he humbly strove to confess his own weakness, he earned by his simplicity a part in the grandeur of his Master.

℟. O Lord, come and make no tarrying; loosen the bonds of thy people.

In considering this subject we find an apparent contradiction between one of John's statements, and the saying of our Redeemer recorded in another part of the Gospel. Matth. xvii. 10-12. When His disciples asked our Lord regarding the coming of Elias, He answered: Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. And if ye will receive it, this that is, John is Elias. Matth. xi. 14. But when John was asked if he was Elias, he answered: I am not. How comes it then, dearly beloved brethren, that we find the Truth Itself asserting what the prophet of the Truth denied? It must evidently be that our Lord meant one thing and John another, when the Lord said, This is, and John, I am not. For how can he be the prophet of truth, if he speak not according to the word of Him Who is the Eternal Truth?
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. Behold, there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall come for salvation unto the people, to it shall the Gentiles seek;

Let us then more minutely examine these words, and we shall find that there is no real contradiction. When the Angel announced to Zacharias the coming birth of John he said He shall go before Him in the spirit and power of Elias, Luke i. 17. As the old Elias will come again before the Second Advent of the Lord, so did John, as the new Elias, go before the First Advent, in the spirit and power of Elias. As the old Elias will be the Fore-runner of the Judge, so the new Elias was the Forerunner of the Saviour. John then was Elias in spirit, but not in person; and our Lord asserteth of the spirit what John denieth of the person.

A Ubèda, in Spagna, il natale di san Giovànni della Croce, Sacerdote e Confessore, compagno di santa Terèsa nella riforma dei Carmelitani, il quale dal Sommo Pontefice Benedétto decimoterzo fu ascritto fra i Santi, e dal Papa Pio undecimo fu dichiarato Dottore della Chiesa universale. La sua festa però si celebra il ventiquattro Novembre.
A Reims, in Frància, la passione dei santi Nicàsio Vescovo, sua sorella Eutropia Vergine, e Compagni Martiri, uccisi da barbari nemici della Chiesa.
Ad Alessàndria i santi Martiri Eróne, Arsénio, Isidoro e Dióscoro fanciullo. Di questi i primi tre dal Giudice, che, nella persecuzione di Dècio, straziandoli con vari tormenti, li vedeva armati di pari costanza, furono fatti gettare nel fuoco; Dióscoro poi, in molte maniere flagellato, per divino volere fu lasciato andar libero per consolazione dei fedeli.

Martyrology {anticipated}
December 14th 2026, the 5th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Alexandria, (in the year 250,) the holy martyrs Heron, Arsenius, and Isidore, and a lad Dioscorus. In the persecution under the Emperor Decius the judge caused Heron, Arsenius, and Isidore to be lacerated with diverse torments, and, when he saw them to be all equally steadfast, to be burnt. Dioscorus was heavily whipped, but God was pleased that, for the comfort of the faithful, he should then be set at liberty.
At Antioch, the holy martyrs Drusus, Zosimus, and Theodore.
Upon the same day, (in the year 284,) the holy martyrs Justus and Abundius. Under Olybrius the President, in the persecution under the Emperor Numerian, they were cast into the fire, and when they appeared thence unburnt, they were beheaded.
At Reims, the holy martyrs Nicasius, Bishop, (in the year 400,) of that see the Virgin Eutropia, his sister, and their Companions, who were slain by the savage enemies of the Church (in the year 407.)
In the island of Cyprus the blessed Spiridion, Bishop (of Tremithos) he was one of those Confessors whose right eyes were put out and their left thighs hamstrung, and were condemned to penal servitude in the mines by the Emperor Galerius Maximian. He was illustrious for the gift of prophecy, and the fame of miracles, and at the Council of Nicea, (held in 325,) he confuted and converted to the faith a heathen philosopher who attacked the Christian religion, (and died after the year 347.)

At Pavia, holy Pompey, Bishop (of that see.)
At Naples, in Campania, (in the year 596,) holy Agnello, Abbot (at Naples,) famous for the grace of miracles, who, when the city had been beleaguered, had often been seen with a flag marked with a cross, delivering it from the enemy.
At Ubeda, in Spain, the holy Confessor John of the Cross (died in 1591) a companion of holy Teresa in reforming the Carmelites, whose feast is kept upon the 24th day of November.
At Milan, the holy Hermit Matronian.
