Dalla Bolla dogmatica di Papa Pio IX

Fin dai tempi antichi Vescovi, ecclesiastici, ordini regolari e gli stessi imperatori e re presentarono vive istanze a questa Sede apostolica perché si definisse come dogma di fede cattolica l'immacolata Concezione della santissima Madre di Dio. E queste domande furono ripetute pure ai nostri tempi, e presentate specialmente, a Gregorio XVI, di felice memoria, nostro predecessore, e a noi stessi, così dai vescovi, e dal clero secolare, e dalle famiglie religiose, come dai principi sovrani e popoli fedeli. Noi pertanto conoscendo pienamente tutte queste cose e prendendole in seria considerazione, con singolare gioia del nostro cuore, appena innalzati, sebbene immeritatamente, per segreta disposizione della divina provvidenza a questa sublime Cattedra di Pietro, prendemmo in mano il governo di tutta la Chiesa, nulla certo avemmo più a cuore per la nostra somma venerazione, pietà e affetto fin dai più teneri anni verso la santissima Vergine Maria Madre di Dio, che di fare tutto quanto poteva essere ancora nei voti della Chiesa per accrescere l'onore della beatissima Vergine, e far risplendere di nuova luce le sue prerogative.

Che dire, o come parlare dell'illustre e santa Vergine? Poiché, eccettuato Dio solo, ella è superiore a tutti: è più bella per natura degli stessi Cherubini e Serafini, e di tutto l'esercito angelico: onde nessuna lingua è bastevole né in terra né in cielo, a cantare le sue lodi, e neppure quella degli Angeli. O Vergine beata, colomba pura e sposa celeste, Maria, cielo, tempio e trono della divinità, a te appartiene il Cristo, questo fulgido sole del cielo e della terra! Nuvola luminosa, che hai attratto dal cielo, per rischiarar la terra, il suo fulgore più splendido, il Cristo. Salve, piena di grazia, porta dei cieli, di cui evidentemente, chiaramente parla il profeta nella Cantica nel corso del suo dire allorché esclama: «Sei un giardino chiuso, sorella mia sposa, sei un giardino chiuso, una fonte sigillata » Cant 4,12.

C'è un prodigio stupendo nel cielo, una donna ammantata del sole, che porta la luce fra le braccia: c'è un prodigio stupendo nel cielo, il seno d'una Vergine che possiede il Figlio di Dio: c'è un prodigio stupendo nel cielo, il Signore degli Angeli s'è fatto il bambino della Vergine. Gli Angeli accusavano Eva, ora invece, glorificano Maria, che ha rialzato Eva dalla caduta, e ha menato in cielo Adamo scacciato dal paradiso. Ella invero è la mediatrice fra il cielo e la terra, avendone procurato l'unione in maniera naturale.

From of old time continual prayers have been offered to this Apostolic See not only by Bishops, Churchmen, and the Regular Orders, but also by Emperors and Kings, beseeching that the sinlessness of the Conception of the Mother of God might be made the subject of a Dogmatic Definition. These prayers have been still more urgently addressed in recent times to Our Predecessor, of happy memory, Gregory XVI., and to Ourselves, by the Bishops, by the Secular Clergy, by the Regular Orders, and by the most eminent Christian Princes and nations. The knowledge of these things hath caused Our heart to rejoice, and they have been the serious occupation of Our thoughts ever since, in spite of our unworthiness, the inscrutable Providence of God was pleased to set Us in this supreme Chair of Peter, and to put His Church into Our hands, for Us to govern. Since then, We have had nothing so much at heart as to yield to the desires of the Church in this matter, to the increasing of the veneration of which the most holy Virgin is already the object, and to the setting in a clearer light the singular graces with which God hath adorned her, being Ourselves especially drawn to the same by the reverence, love, and affection with which We have been from Our childhood animated towards the same most holy Virgin Mary, Mother of God.

I am at a loss what words or terms I ought to employ in speaking of this illustrious and holy Virgin. She is raised above all things except God; she was made much higher than the Cherubim and Seraphim, and the whole host of heaven; neither the voices of heaven nor of earth are full enough to set forth her majesty, no, not the voices of Angels. O blessed Virgin! O pure dove and Bride of heaven! O Mary! At once the heaven, the temple, and the throne of God! Mother of the Sun that shineth both on heaven and on earth, even Christ! Bright cloud, through which the Son of Man hath come as the lightning, that lighteneth from the East even unto the West! Hail, gate of heaven, full of grace, of whom the Prophet in the Song of Songs openly speaketh in the course of his prayer, saying, A garden enclosed is My sister, My Spouse, a garden enclosed, a fountain sealed. ~iv. 12.

Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow we keep

The feast of the holy martyr Eusebius, Bishop of Vercelli, of whom mention is made also upon the 1st day of August, (when he died between the years 370 and 375,) and yesterday as for this day.
December 16th 2026, the 7th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:
The three children Ananias, Azarias, and Misael, whose bodies are laid in a certain cave at Babylon (in the sixth century before Christ.)
At Ravenna, the holy martyrs Valentine, a military instructor, Concordius his son, Navalis, and Agricola, who suffered for Christ's sake, (in the fourth century,) in the persecution under the Emperor Maximian.
At Nola, in Campania, in the persecution under the Emperor Decius, the holy Virgin and martyr Albina, (in the year 250.) In Africa, many holy Virgins and martyrs, who in the Vandal persecution under the Arian king Hunneric suffered hanging, pressing, and redhot plates, and happily brought to a close the conflict of martyrdom, (in the year 482.)
