Lettura 4
Eusebio, Sardo di nazione, lettore della chiesa di Roma, poi vescovo di Vercelli, parve non senza ragione scelto per divino consiglio a reggere questa chiesa: perché gli elettori, che per lo innanzi non lo conoscevano punto, appena l'ebbero visto, lo scelsero a preferenza dei loro cittadini; e non ci volle più tempo per apprezzarlo che per vederlo. Egli fu il primo in Occidente a stabilire nella sua chiesa dei monaci a far le funzioni dei chierici, affinché si vedesse in questi uomini insieme il disprezzo delle ricchezze e l'occupazione propria dei leviti. Combatté così vigorosamente le empietà ariane, che in quell'epoca infestarono ogni parte d'Occidente, che la sua invitta fede consolò e sostenne la vita di Liberio sommo Pontefice. Onde questi riconoscendo in lui il fervore dello Spirito di Dio, appena gli ebbe significato di perorare presso l'imperatore insieme coi suoi legati la causa della fede, si portò subito con essi da Costanzo; dal quale ottenne a forza di zelo tutto quanto si proponeva con questa legazione, cioè la celebrazione di un concilio.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano
* e gli procurò eterna gloria.

E il concilio si radunò a Milano l'anno seguente, e Costanzo vi invitò pure Eusebio, invito ripetuto con grande istanza dai legati di Liberio, nel quale ben lungi dal lasciarsi influenzare dalle mene della sinagoga Ariana e di prender parte ai loro furori contro sant'Atanasio, dichiarò anzi altamente fin da principio, che alcuni dei presenti gli erano noti come infetti di eresia, e propose di far loro sottoscrivere la fede Nicena, prima di trattare di altro. Ma ricusandosi gli Ariani vivamente irritati, egli non solo ricusò di sottoscrivere contro Atanasio, ma anzi disimpegnò con mirabile accortezza la semplicità di san Dionigi Martire, che, ingannato da loro, aveva sottoscritto contro. Perciò essi furiosi contro di lui, dopo averlo molto oltraggiato, lo condannarono all'esilio: ma il sant'uomo, scossa la polvere dai suoi piedi, senza temere per nulla né le minacce di cesare né il taglio della spada, accettò l'esilio come parte del suo ministero; e mandato a Scitopoli, vi soffrì fame, sete, battiture, e diversi altri supplizi, e disprezzando coraggiosamente la vita per la fede, senza temere la morte, abbandonò il suo corpo ai carnefici.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Hai esaudito, o Signore, il desiderio della sua anima,
* e non hai respinto la domanda delle sue labbra.

Lettura 6
Le lettere importanti, piene di forza, pietà e religione che egli scrisse da Scitopoli ai clero e popolo di Vercelli e ad altri vicini, fanno vedere quale fu la crudeltà e l'insolenza sfrontata degli Ariani verso di lui; ed esse dimostrano altresì che né le loro minacce né i trattamenti inumani poterono abbatterlo mai, né la loro blanda e serpentina scaltrezza attirarlo dalla loro parte. Di là deportato in Cappadocia a cagione della sua fermezza, e da ultimo nella Tebaide dell'alto Egitto, sopportò i rigori dell'esilio fino alla morte di Costanzo: poi essendogli stato permesso di ritornare al suo gregge, non volle partirne se non dopo aver assistito al concilio radunato in Alessandria per riparare alle perdite della fede e quindi, a guisa d'abile medico, d'aver percorso le Provincie d'Oriente, restituendo a perfetta sanità quelli ch'erano infermi nella fede, con l'istruirli nella dottrina della Chiesa. Poi, continuando questa salutare missione, passò nell'IIliria, e infine giunse in Italia, la quale, al suo ritorno, mutò le sue vesti di duolo: qui pubblicò i commentari d'Origene e d'Eusebio di Cesarea sui Salmi, che egli aveva purgati e tradotti dal Greco in Latino; infine, illustre per tante eccellenti azioni, da Vercelli andò a ricevere l'immarcescibile corona di gloria meritata per tante sofferenze, sotto Valentiniano e Valente.

Omelia 32 sui Vangeli
Poiché il Signore e Redentore nostro venne al mondo come un nuovo uomo, diede nuovi comandamenti al mondo. Infatti oppose alla nostra vita nutrita nei vizi la contrarietà della novità della sua. Cosa infatti l'uomo vecchio, cosa l'uomo carnale conosceva, se non tenere le sue cose, rubare le altrui, se poteva; desiderare, se non poteva? Ma il medico celeste a ciascun singolo vizio adibisce medicamenti contrari. Infatti come coll'arte della medicina le cose calde si curano con le fredde e le fredde con le calde: così nostro Signore oppose medicine contrarie ai peccati, tanto da ordinare la continenza ai lussuriosi, la generosità ai tirchi, la mansuetudine agli iracondi, l'umiltà agli orgogliosi.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Lettura 8
Difatti quando proponeva nuovi comandamenti a quelli che lo seguivano, disse: «Chiunque non rinunzia a tutto quel che possiede, non può essere mio discepolo». Come se volesse dire apertamente: voi che per la vita vecchia desiderate la roba d'altri, elargite per il desiderio di una nuovo modo di vivere anche la vostra. Ascoltiamo cosa dice in questa lezione: «Chi vuol venire dietro a me, rinneghi se stesso». Ivi si dice ché rinneghiamo la nostra roba: qui si dice ché rinneghiamo noi stessi. Certo, sono occulti i misteri divini, né è facile a nessun uomo, giusta il detto d'un profeta Is 40, di conoscere il disegno di Dio. Tuttavia dagli altri fatti e istruzioni del Signore Salvatore, possiamo comprendere essere stato per un disegno particolare che venne scelta, per dare al mondo il Signore, una che fosse sposata ad un uomo. Ma perché non divenne madre prima d'essere sposata? Forse affinché non si dicesse che era diventata madre mediante adulterio.

Reading 4
Eusebius was a Sardinian by birth, first a Reader in the Roman Church, and then Bishop of Vercelli. It seemed specially designed by Providence that he should be called to govern that Church, for the electors, who had never before known him, passed over, with a strange unanimity, all their own fellow-citizens, and chose Eusebius, as soon as they had seen him. He was the first Bishop in the Western Church who established an Order of Regular Clergy, to combine the active with the contemplative life. At this time the storm of Arian blasphemy and sin was sweeping far and wide over the West, and Eusebius set himself to fight against it so manfully, that his unshaken faith brought back Liberius again to life and hope. This Pope, knowing that the Spirit of God was in him, sent him with his Legates to the Emperor Constantius, in the year 354, to plead the cause of the Catholic Faith. His earnestness prevailed with that Prince, so that he obtained all that was asked for, and, among other things, permission for a Council to be summoned.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. The Lord made him honourable, and defended him from his enemies, and kept him safe from those that lay in wait for him,
* And gave him perpetual glory.

The year following, the Council met at Milan, and Eusebius, by the invitation of the Emperor, and the desire and command of the Papal Legates, attended. Here the Arians, assembled in a perfect synagogue of Satan, and all furiously raging together against holy Athanasius, found Eusebius one of the stoutest enemies of their faction. As soon as he entered the Council, he delivered a long harangue, wherein he remarked that, of those there gathered together, some were notoriously defiled with heresy, and therefore he proposed that everyone should first of all subscribe the Nicene Creed, before proceeding to any other business. The Arians, in a violent passion, refused, whereupon he on his part refused to subscribe any proceedings against Athanasius, and even skilfully procured the withdrawal of the signature of the holy martyr Denys, then Bishop of Milan, which they had lyingly procured by practising on his simplicity. The Arians were now entirely enraged, and, after many persecutions, procured a decree of banishment against Eusebius. The Saint shook off the dust of his feet against them, and, defying alike the threats of Caesar and the drawn swords of the soldiery, accepted the sentence as one of the dignities of his office. He was sent to Bethshan in the Holy Land, suffering hunger, thirst, stripes, and all manner of violence, but for the Faith's sake he despised this life, and feared not death, but freely delivered his body to the tormentors.

He wrote a solemn letter from Bethshan, addressed to the clergy and people of Vercelli and that neighbourhood, full of constancy, devotion, and piety, describing the frightful cruelty and brazen impudence of the Arians. From this letter we know how completely they failed to scare him by their threats and their inhuman brutality, or to seduce him by their serpent-like cunning into receiving their communion. In consequence of his unshaken resolution, he was moved from Bethshan into Cappadocia, and then again, to the deserts of Upper Egypt. He suffered exile until the death of Constantius, in 361, after which he was allowed to return to his flock. First, however, he took care to attend the Council at Alexandria, called to heal the wounds of the Church, and, afterwards, like a skilful physician, he made a progress through all the provinces of the East, strengthening those that were weak in the Faith, and confirming them in Christian doctrine. Then, with the same healthful results, he passed through Illyricum into Italy, who, at his coming, laid aside her garments of mourning. After his return, he published an expurgated edition of Origen's Commentary on the Psalms, and likewise of the works of Eusebius of Caesarea, both which he translated from Greek into Latin. At length, distinguished by all these great works, he passed to that crown of glory which fadeth not away, promised to them who suffer for the truth. He departed this present life at Vercelli, in 371, in the reign of Valentinian and Valens.

Our Lord and Redeemer came into the world a new Man, and gave the world new commandments. For against the ways of our old life, brought and bred up in sin, He set the contrast of His new life. It was the old way, according to the knowledge of the carnal man, for every man to keep his own goods, and, if he were able to do it, to take his neighbour's goods also, and, if he were not able to take them, at least to lust after them. But the Heavenly Physician hath medicines wherewith to meet all the diseases of sin. For, even, as by the art of the physician, things hot are healed by things cold, and things cold by things hot, so doth our Lord set against sin holiness, ordaining for the lecherous purity, for the miserly munificence, for the hot-tempered meekness, and for the proud lowliness.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

The mysteries of God are unsearchable, and it is especially declared by a Prophet, that a man can hardly know His counsels. Wisd. ix. 13. Nevertheless, some things have been revealed to us, and we may gather from some of the words and works of the Lord our Saviour, that there was a special purpose of God, in the fact that she who was chosen to be the mother of the Lord was espoused to a man. Why did not the power of the Highest overshadow her before she was so espoused? Perhaps it was lest any might blasphemously say that she had conceived in fornication the Holy One.

A Roma il natale di san Giovànni di Matha, Sacerdote e Confessore, Fondatore dell'Ordine della santissima Trinità per la redenzione degli schiavi. La sua festa però, per decreto del Papa Innocènzo undecimo, si celebra l'otto Febbraio.
A Marsiglia, in Frància, il beato Làzzaro Vescovo, fratello delle sante Maria Maddaléna e Marta, il quale, come si legge nel Vangelo, dal Signore venne chiamato amico e fu risuscitato da morte.
Ad Eleuterópoli, nella Palestina, i santi Martiri Floriano, Calameo e cinquantotto Compagni, i quali, al tempo dell'Imperatore Eréclio, furono uccisi dai Saraceni per la fede di Cristo.
Nel monastero di Fulda santo Stùrmio, Abate ed Apostolo della Sassonia, il quale dal Papa Innocénzo secondo fu ascritto nel numero dei Santi nel secondo Concilio Lateranense.
A Grand-Brigard, vicino a Bruxelles, nel Brabànte, santa Vivina Vergine, la cui esimia santità è attestata da frequenti miracoli.

Nello stesso giorno la Traslazione di sant'Ignazio, Vescovo e Martire, il quale fu il terzo che, dopo il beato Piétro Apostolo, governò la Chiesa di Antiochia. Il suo corpo da Roma, dove egli, sotto Traiano, aveva gloriosamente compiuto il martirio il venti di questo mese, fu trasportato ad Antiochia, ed ivi riposto nel cimitero della chiesa, fuori della porta Dafnitica; in quella occasione san Giovanni Crisòstomo fece un discorso al popolo. In seguito le sue reliquie furono di nuovo trasportate a Roma, e con somma venerazione riposte nella chiesa di san Clemènte, insieme al corpo del medesimo beatissimo Papa e Martire.

December 17th 2026, the 8th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Eleutheropolis, in Palestine, the holy martyrs Florian, Calanicus, and fifty-eight others, their Companions, who were slain by the Saracens for Christ's faith's sake in the time of the Emperor Heraclius.
At Marseilles, in Gaul, blessed Lazarus, (called first) Bishop (of that city,) of whom it is written in the Gospel that the Lord raised him from the dead.
At Rome, holy John de la Matha, founder of the Order of the most Holy Trinity for the redemption of captives. (He died in the year 1213.) His feast is kept upon the 8th day of February by order of Innocent XI.
In the monastery of Fulda, (in the year 779,) the holy Abbot Sturmius, (of the Order of St Benedict, and first Abbot of Fulda,) Apostle of Saxony, whose name Innocent II enrolled with those of the saints at the second Council of Lateran.
At Groot-Bijgaarden, near Brussels, in the Brabant, (in the year 1168,) the holy Virgin Wivina, whose eminent holiness is oftentimes attested by miracles. (Foundress of the Abbey of Bijgaarden, in the Archdiocese of Mechelen, of the Order of St. Benedict.)

In the Ardennes, the blessed Widow Begga, sister of holy Gertrude. (She married Ansegise, son of St. Arnoult, Bishop of Metz. She was born about 368, became a widow in 386, and died about 410.)
Upon the same day is commemorated the translation of the body of the holy martyr Ignatius, Patriarch of Antioch, who was the third to govern that church after the blessed Apostle Peter he suffered at Rome under Trajan, but his body was brought thence to Antioch and laid in the cemetery of the church outside the gate which leadeth unto Daphne, upon the anniversary of the which ceremony holy John Chrysostom preached unto the people. In after-times the body was again brought back to Rome, where it is buried, and highly honoured in the church of St. Clement along with the body of that most blessed Pope and martyr.

55:4 Ab altitúdine diéi timébo: * ego vero in te sperábo.
55:5 In Deo laudábo sermónes meos, in Deo sperávi: * non timébo quid fáciat mihi caro.
55:6 Tota die verba mea exsecrabántur: * advérsum me omnes cogitatiónes eórum in malum.
55:7 Inhabitábunt et abscóndent: * ipsi calcáneum meum observábunt.
55:8 Sicut sustinuérunt ánimam meam, pro níhilo salvos fácies illos: * in ira pópulos confrínges.
55:9 Deus, vitam meam annuntiávi tibi: * posuísti lácrimas meas in conspéctu tuo.

55:10 In quacúmque die invocávero te: * ecce, cognóvi, quóniam Deus meus es.

55:12 In me sunt, Deus, vota tua, * quæ reddam, laudatiónes tibi.
55:13 Quóniam eripuísti ánimam meam de morte, et pedes meos de lapsu: * ut pláceam coram Deo in lúmine vivéntium.
