Si fidéliter, dilectíssimi, atque sapiénter creatiónis nostræ intelligámus exórdium, inveniémus hóminem ideo ad imáginem Dei cónditum, ut imitátor sui esset auctóris: et hanc esse naturálem nostri géneris dignitátem, si in nobis, quasi in quodam spéculo, divínæ benignitátis forma respléndeat. Se noi, o dilettissimi, intendiamo secondo la fede e la sapienza l'origine della nostra creazione, troveremo che l'uomo fu creato ad immagine di Dio, affinché imitasse il suo autore: e che la prima perfezione della nostra razza consiste in questo, che riflettiamo, quasi in uno specchio, l'immagine della bontà divina. E su questo tipo la grazia del Salvatore ci rifà ogni giorno, allorquando quello che cadde nel primo Adamo, viene rialzato nel secondo.

Omelia 20 sui Vangeli prima della metà
Giovanni diceva alle folle che accorrevano per essere battezzate da lui: «Razza di vipere, chi v'ha insegnato a sfuggire l'ira che vi sovrasta?» 1Luc. 3,7. Ora l'ira che sovrasta è il castigo finale: che non potrà sfuggirlo allora il peccatore s'egli non ricorre ai gemiti della penitenza. Ed è a notare che questi cattivi rampolli, imitando la maniera d'agire dei cattivi genitori, son detti razza di vipere; perché invidiando i buoni, perseguitandoli, facendo del male al prossimo, e cercando di danneggiarlo, essi in tutte queste cose seguono le vie dei loro padri secondo la carne, e sono come figli velenosi nati da velenosi parenti.

Ma perché abbiamo già peccato, perché siamo involti nelle cattive abitudini inveterate, ci dica egli che dobbiam fare per poter fuggire la collera che verrà. Eccolo: «Fate ormai degni frutti di penitenza» Luc. 3,8. Nelle quali parole è da notare, che l'amico dello sposo avverte di fare non soltanto frutti di penitenza, ma degni frutti di penitenza. Perché altro è fare un frutto di penitenza, altro fare un degno frutto di penitenza. E per parlare bene di questi frutti di penitenza, si deve sapere, che chiunque non ha commesso alcuna cosa illecita, ha diritto di usare delle cose lecite: e così, esercitandosi nelle opere di pietà, egli è libero di usare, se vuole, delle cose del mondo.

Ma se alcuno è caduto in peccato d'impurità, o forse, ch'è più grave, di adulterio, tanto più deve astenersi dalle cose lecite, quanto più si ricorda d'aver commesse azioni illecite. Poiché il frutto dell'opera buona non dev'essere uguale in chi ha peccato di meno e in chi ha peccato di più: ovvero, in chi non ha commesso colpe, in chi ne ha commesse alcune, o in chi ne ha commesse molte. As a mean of reaching this dignity, we are daily offered the grace of our Saviour, for as in the first Adam all men are fallen, so in the Second Adam can all men be raised up again i Cor. xv. 22.

The wrath to come in one sense signifieth the great vengeance of the Latter Day the sinner that repenteth not of his sin now, will have no mean whereby to flee from punishment then. Let us remark that addressing evil children copying the example of evil parents, the Baptist calleth them a generation of vipers in that they were envious at the righteous, and persecuted them; that they repaid evil for evil; that they hunted out ways of harming their neighbours, in all these things following the pattern of carnal parents, the prophet likeneth them to a venomous brood hatched from a venomous stock.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. I have sworn, saith the Lord, that I will not be wroth any more with the earth; for the mountains and the hills shall receive My righteousness.
* And the covenant of My peace shall be in Jerusalem.

In considering then what are fruits worthy of repentance, we may remark that if we had done nothing unlawful we might have had free use of things which are lawful, and been able to sanctify ourselves without abstaining from indulgence in the things of the world.

Martirologio {anticipated}
Anno del Signore 2026, 21 Dicembre, Luna 12

A Calamuia il natale del beato Tommàso Apostolo, il quale predicò il Vangelo ai Parti, ai Medi, ai Persiani ed agli Ircani, e poi penetrò nell'India, ove, avendo istruito quelle genti nella religione cristiana, per ordine del Re fu trafitto da lance e morì.
Le sue reliquie furono prima trasportate nella città di Edéssa, nella Mesopotàmia, e poi ad Ortóna, nell'Abruzzo.
Così pure a Friburgo di Svizzera il natale di san Piétro Canìsio, Sacerdote della Compagnia di Gesù e Confessore, illustre per dottrina e santità, il quale, in tempi pericolosissimi per la Germània, strenuamente difese e propagò la fede cattolica. Dal Sommo Pontefice Pio undecimo fu ascritto nel catalogo dei Santi, e inoltre dichiarato Dottore della Chiesa universale, e la celebrazione della sua festa fu fissata al ventisette Aprile.
Ad Antiochia sant'Anastasio, Vescovo e Martire, il quale, al tempo dell'Imperatore Foca, fu crudelissimamente ucciso dai Giudèi, in una sollevazione da loro fatta contro i Cristiani.
A Nicomédia san Glicério Prete, il quale, nella persecuzione di Diocleziano, fu straziato con molti tormenti, e finalmente, gettato nel fuoco, compì il martirio.
In Toscana i santi Martiri Giovanni e Festo.
Nella Licia san Temistocle Martire, il quale, sotto l'Imperatore Décio, si offrì in luogo di san Dióscoro, che era cercato a morte, e, sospeso sull'eculeo, trascinato e percosso con bastoni, conquistò la corona del martirio.

Martyrology {anticipated}
December 21st 2026, the 12th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

Upon the Coromandel coast of India, not far from Madras, the blessed Apostle Thomas. He preached the Gospel to the Parthians, Medes, Persians, and Hyrcanians, and at length came into India, and was teaching the Christian religion to those people when the king commanded him to be run through with lances, and so he died. His relics were taken first to the city of Edessa and afterwards to Ortona.
In Tuscany, the holy martyrs John and Festus.
In Lycia, the holy martyr Themistocles. Under the Emperor Decius he gave himself up for holy Dioscorus, when they were seeking after him to slay him, and was first racked, taken down and dragged about, and beaten with cudgels, gained the crown of martyrdom (in the year 249.)
At Nicomedia, the holy Priest Glycerius, who suffered many torments in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian, and was at length cast in the fire, and so finished his testimony.
At Antioch, the holy martyr Anastasius, Bishop (of that see,) who was cruelly murdered by the Jews in the time of the Emperor Phocas, (in the year 609.)
At Trier, the holy Confessor Severinus, Bishop (of that see, fourth century.)
