Sermone 1 sulla Natività del Signore
O dilettissimi, è nato il nostro Salvatore esultiamo. Poiché non può esser luogo a tristezza allorché nasce la vita: la quale, dissipando il timore della morte, ci riempie di gioia per la promessa dell'eternità. Nessuno è escluso di partecipare a tanta allegrezza. Tutti hanno lo stesso motivo di letizia: perché nostro Signore, distruttore del peccato e della morte, siccome non trovò nessuno libero da reato, così è venuto per liberar tutti. Esulti il giusto, perché è vicino alla palma: gioisca il peccatore, perché è invitato al perdono: prenda animo il Gentile, perché è chiamato alla vita. Infatti il Figlio di Dio nella pienezza dei tempi fissata dalla imperscrutabile profondità del divino consiglio, assunse la natura umana per riconciliarla col suo autore, affinché l'inventore della morte, il diavolo, fosse vinto con quella stessa natura onde aveva vinto.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

In questo conflitto impegnatosi per noi, si combatté con grande e ammirabile lealtà, poiché l'onnipotente Signore combatté contro il crudelissimo nemico non nella sua maestà, ma nella nostra infermità: opponendogli la stessa forma e la stessa natura soggetta sì, alla nostra mortalità, ma scevra d'ogni peccato. Giacché è alieno da questa natività ciò che si legge di tutti gli uomini: «Nessuno è senza macchia, neppure il bambino, la cui vita sulla terra è appena di un giorno» Job. 14,4. Nulla dunque della concupiscenza della carne entrò in questa natura singolare, niente ci s'infiltrò della legge del peccato. Viene scelta una Vergine regale, della stirpe di David, la quale dovendo portare nel seno il sacro rampollo, prima che corporalmente concepisse l'Uomo-Dio spiritualmente. E affinché, ignara del disegno celeste, non si spaventasse a sì inusitato annunzio, apprende mediante colloquio angelico quel che lo Spirito Santo doveva operare in lei: così ella che presto diverrà Madre di Dio, non teme più alcun danno per il suo pudore.

Omelia 8 sul Vangelo
Poiché per grazia del Signore oggi abbiamo a celebrare tre Messe solenni, non possiamo discorrere a lungo della lettura del Vangelo; però che ne diciamo qualche cosa, sia pur brevemente, ce l'obbliga la stessa Natività del nostro Redentore. Perché dunque alla nascita del Signore si fa il censimento dell'impero, se non per far comprendere che appariva nella carne colui che dovea registrare i suoi eletti nell'eternità? D'altra parte, per mezzo del Profeta, dice dei reprobi: «Siano cancellati dal libro dei viventi, e non siano iscritti coi giusti» Ps. 68,29. Egli poi opportunamente nasce in Betlemme, dacché Betlemme vuol dire casa del pane. Difatti lui stesso dice: «Io sono il pane vivo che son disceso dal cielo» Joann. 6,51. Pertanto il luogo dove nasce il Signore fu chiamato innanzi casa del pane; perché là doveva certamente apparire nella natura umana colui che doveva ristorare internamente le anime dei suoi eletti. Egli nasce non in casa del suoi parenti, ma in viaggio: affin di mostrarci senza dubbio che per la sua umanità assunta nasceva quasi in luogo straniero.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Considerate gl'inizi della Chiesa nascente: Cristo nasce, e i pastori già vegliano, come per raccogliere nell'ovile del Signore i greggi delle nazioni che sino allora vivevano come pecore, affin di preservarle, nelle profonde tenebre della notte, dagli assalti di bestie spirituali. E giustamente i pastori vegliano seguendo l'esempio del buon pastore. Così il gregge è il popolo, la notte è il mondo, i pastori sono i sacerdoti. Senza dubbio anche quegli è pastore cui è detto: «Sta vigilante e conferma gli altri» Apoc. 3,2. E il Signore non solo ha stabilito i vescovi per difendere il gregge, ma ha destinato anche gli Angeli.

Affinché tu non abbia del Verbo un'idea bassa, come se si trattasse di parole umane, ascolta ciò che devi pensarne: «Dio era il Verbo» Joann, 1,1. Ora venga fuori non so quale infedele Ariano a dirci che il Verbo di Dio fu fatto. Come può essere che il Verbo di Dio sia stato fatto, quando Dio per mezzo del Verbo ha fatto tutte le cose? Se esso Verbo di Dio fu fatto, per qual altro verbo fu egli fatto? Se tu dici che esso è stato fatto da un verbo del Verbo, allora io rispondo che esso è l'unico Figlio di Dio. Se poi non ammetti un verbo del Verbo, concedi allora che non è stato fatto quegli per il quale tutto fu fatto. Perché non poté fare se stesso colui per il quale tutto fu fatto. Credi dunque all'Evangelista.

Dearly beloved brethren, Unto us is born this day a Saviour, Luke ii. 11. Let us rejoice. It would be unlawful to be sad to day, for today is Life's Birthday; the Birthday of that Life, Which, for us dying creatures, taketh away the sting of death, and bringeth the bright promise of the eternal gladness hereafter. It would be unlawful for any man to refuse to partake in our rejoicing. All men have an equal share in the great cause of our joy, for, since our Lord, Who is the destroyer of sin and of death, findeth that all are bound under the condemnation, He is come to make all free. Rejoice, O thou that art holy, thou drawest nearer to thy crown! Rejoice, O thou that art sinful, thy Saviour offereth thee pardon! Rejoice also, O thou Gentile, God calleth thee to life! For the Son of God, when the fulness of the time was come, which had been fixed by the unsearchable counsel of God, took upon Him the nature of man, that He might reconcile that nature to Him Who made it, and so the devil, the inventor of death, is met and beaten in that very flesh which hath been the field of his victory.

When our Lord entered the field of battle against the devil, He did so with a great and wonderful fairness. Being Himself the Almighty, He laid aside His uncreated Majesty to fight with our cruel enemy in our weak flesh. He brought against him the very shape, the very nature of our mortality, yet without sin. ~Heb. iv. 15. His birth however was not a birth like other births for no other is born pure, nay, not the little child whose life endureth but a day on the earth. To His birth alone the throes of human passion had not contributed, in His alone no consequence of sin had had part. For His Mother was chosen a Virgin of the kingly lineage of David, and when she was to grow heavy with the sacred Child, her soul had already conceived Him before her body. She knew the counsel of God announced to her by the Angel, lest the unwonted events should alarm her. The future Mother of God knew what was to be wrought in her by the Holy Ghost, and that her modesty was absolutely safe.

By God's mercy we are to say three Masses today, so that there is not much time left for preaching; but at the same time the occasion of the Lord's Birthday itself obliges me to speak a few words. I will first ask why, when the Lord was to be born, the world was enrolled? Was it not to herald the appearing of Him by Whom the elect are enrolled in the book of life? Whereas the Prophet saith of
the reprobate: Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous. Ps. lxviii. 29. Then, the Lord is born in Bethlehem. Now the name Bethlehem signifieth the House of Bread, and thus it is the birth-place of Him Who hath said: I am the Living Bread, Which came down from heaven. John vi. 51. We see then that this name of Bethlehem was prophetically given to the place where Christ was born, because it was there that He was to appear in the flesh by Whom the souls of the faithful are fed unto life eternal. He was born, not in His Mother's house, but away from home. And this is a mystery, showing that this our mortality into which He was born was not the home of Him Who is begotten of the Father before the worlds.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Lest thou shouldest think all things mean, as thou art accustomed to think of things human, hear and digest this The Word was God. Now perhaps there will come forward some Arian unbeliever, and say that the Word of God was a creature. How can the Word of God be a creature, when it was by the Word that all creatures were made? If He be a creature, then there must have been some other Word, not a creature, by which He was made. And what Word is that? If thou sayest that it was by the word of the Word Himself that He was made, I tell thee that God had no other, but One Only-begotten Son. But if thou say not that it was by the word of the Word Himself that He was made, thou art forced to confess that. He by Whom all things were made was not Himself made at all. Believe the Gospel.

Martyrology {anticipated}
December 26th 2026, the 17th day of the Moon,

On the 26th day of December, was born into the higher life

At Jerusalem, holy Stephen, the first Martyr. He was stoned by the Jews not long after the Ascension of the Lord.
At Rome, holy Marinus, of the Senatorial order. He was arrested under the Emperor Numerian and the Praefect Marcian, on the charge of being a Christian. He was tortured as they used to do to slaves, on the rack and with iron claws. They threw him into a furnace, but the fire was turned into dew, and he was delivered. He was thrown to wild beasts, but they left him unharmed. He was led again to the altar, and, when he prayed, the idols fell down. Then they smote him with the sword, and he became more than conqueror through up-lifting of his testimony.
Likewise, at Rome, on this day was laid to sleep (in the year 269) beside the Appian Road the holy Pope Denys, who worked hard for the Church, and is a bright ensample of faith.
At the same place (in the year 417), the holy Pope and confessor Zosimus.
In Mesopotamia, the holy Bishop Archelaus, well known for his teaching and holiness.
At Verona (in the year 380), holy Bishop Zeno.
At Rome, holy Theodore, the chamberlain of St Peter's church, of whom mention is made by blessed Pope Gregory.
And in diverse places an exceeding great multitude of holy Martyrs and Confessors and holy Virgins.
