Heri enim Rex noster trábea carnis indútus, de aula úteri virginális egrédiens, visitáre dignátus est mundum: hódie miles de tabernáculo córporis éxiens, triumphátor migrávit ad cælum. Ille, sempitérnæ Deitátis majestáte serváta, servíle cinctórium carnis assúmens, in hujus sǽculi campum pugnatúrus intrávit; iste, depósitis corruptibílibus córporis induméntis, ad cæli palátium perénniter regnatúrus ascéndit. Sermone 3 su S. Stefano, circa il principio
Ieri abbiam celebrato la nascita temporale del nostro Re sempiterno: oggi celebriamo la passione trionfale d'un soldato. Infatti ieri il nostro Re rivestito della nostra carne, uscendo dall'aula di un seno verginale, si degnò di visitare il mondo: oggi un soldato, uscendo dall'abitazione del suo corpo, salì trionfante al cielo. Quegli, conservando la maestà della natura divina ed eterna e prendendo l'umile veste della carne, entrò nel campo di questo mondo per combattere; questi, deposto l'indumento corruttibile del suo corpo, salì al palazzo celeste per regnare eternamente. Quegli discese coperto del velo della carne, questi salì incoronato del (suo) sangue.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Mentre lo lapidavano, Stefano pregava e diceva:

Questi salì dopo essere stato lapidato dai Giudei, perché quegli era disceso fra la gioia degli Angeli. «Gloria a Dio nel più alto dei cieli» Luc. 2,13, ieri cantavano esultanti i santi Angeli: oggi festanti ricevettero Stefano nella loro compagnia. Ieri il Signore uscì dal seno della Vergine: oggi il soldato è uscito dall'ergastolo della carne. Ieri Cristo per noi fu involto in panni oggi Stefano fu da lui rivestito della stola dell'immortalità. Ieri l'angusto presepio portò Cristo bambino: oggi l'immensità del cielo ricevette Stefano trionfante. Il Signore è disceso solo per elevare molti: il nostro Re umiliò se stesso per esaltare i suoi soldati.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Tutti insieme gli si gettarono addosso, e lo trascinarono fuori della città, mentre pregava dicendo:

Ma ci è necessario conoscere, o fratelli, con quali armi munito Stefano poté vincere la crudeltà dei Giudei, e meritare sì glorioso trionfo. Stefano adunque, per meritare di ricevere la corona che il suo nome significa, aveva per armi la carità, e con essa vinceva dappertutto. Per l'amore verso Dio non cedé al furore dei Giudei: per l'amore verso il prossimo intercedé per quelli che lo lapidavano. Per amore riprendeva gli erranti, perché si correggessero: per amore pregava per quelli che lo lapidavano, perché non fossero puniti. Armato della forza dell'amore vinse Saulo che inferociva crudelmente; e meritò d'avere compagno in cielo colui che aveva avuto persecutore sulla terra.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Degli empi si gettarono sopra il giusto per condannarlo a morte:

Libro 4 Comm. al capo 23 di Matteo
Queste parole: «Compite la misura dei vostri padri» che sopra abbiam detto riferirsi alla persona del Signore, perché doveva essere ucciso dai Giudei, possono anche riferirsi ai suoi discepoli, dei quali ora dice: «Ecco, io vi mando dei profeti e dei savi e degli scribi» Matth. 23,34. Osserva in pari tempo, come secondo che scrive l'Apostolo ai Corinti, sono diversi i doni attribuiti ai discepoli di. Cristo; gli uni sono profeti che predicono il futuro; altri sapienti che sanno quando si deve parlare; altri dottori versatissimi nella legge, tra i quali Stefano fu lapidato, Paolo ucciso, Pietro crocifisso, i discepoli, com'è negli Atti degli Apostoli, furono flagellati Act. 5,40 e 6,22.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Stefano, servo di Dio, mentre lo lapidavano i Giudei, vide i cieli aperti: li vide e ci entrò:

Lettura 8
Vediamo chi sia questo Zaccaria, figlio di Barachia: perché troviamo (nella Scrittura) parecchi Zaccaria. Ma a toglierci ogni possibilità di errore, si aggiunge: «Che uccideste fra il tempio e l'altare» Matth. 23,35. Ho letto in diversi (autori) opinioni diverse e devo esporle tutte. Alcuni dicono che questo Zaccaria, figlio di Barachia, sia l'undecimo dei dodici profeti, e il nome di suo padre vi è conforme ma ch'egli sia stato ucciso fra il tempio e l'altare la Scrittura non lo dice; tanto più che ai suoi tempi del tempio restavano forse appena delle rovine. Altri vogliono che si tratti di Zaccaria, padre di Giovanni Battista, fondandosi su certe fantasie di apocrifi, che vorrebbero sia stato ucciso per aver annunziata la venuta del Salvatore.

℟. Si aprirono le porte del cielo al beato Stefano Martire di Cristo, che fu annoverato primo nel numero dei Martiri:

Altri vogliono che questo sia il Zaccaria che Joas re di Giuda fece uccidere fra il tempio e l'altare, come narra la storia dei Re. Ma è da osservare, che questo Zaccaria non è già figlio di Barachia, bensì figlio del sacerdote Jojada: ond'è che la Scrittura dice: «Joas non si ricordò che suo padre Joiada gli fece del bene» 2Par. 24,22. Accordandosi qui dunque e il nome di Zaccaria e il luogo dell'uccisione, vediamo perché è detto figlio di Barachia e non di Joiada? Barachia nella nostra lingua significa: Benedetto dal Signore, onde con questo nome Ebraico viene indicata la giustizia dei sacerdote Jojada. Nel Vangelo che usano i Nazareni, invece di «figlio di Barachia» troviamo scritto «figlio di Jojada».

Yesterday our King was pleased to come forth from His royal palace of the Virgin's womb, clothed in a robe of flesh, to visit the world; today His soldier, laying aside the tabernacle of the body, entereth in triumph into the heavenly palaces. The One, preserving unchanged that glory of the Godhead which He had before the world was, girded Himself with the form of a servant, and entered the arena of this world to fight sin; the other taketh off the garments of this corruptible body, and entereth into the heavenly mansions, where he will reign for ever. The One cometh down, veiled in flesh; the other goeth up, clothed in a robe of glory, red with blood.

Why brethren, it behoveth us to consider with what arms Stephen was able, amid all the cruelty of the Jews, to remain more than conqueror, and worthily to attain to so blessed a triumph. Stephen, in that struggle which brought him to the crown whereof his name is a prophecy, had for armour the love of God and man, and by it he remained victorious on all hands. The love of God strengthened him against the cruelty of the Jews; and the love of his neighbour made him pray even for his murderers. Through love he rebuked the wandering, that they might be corrected; through love he prayed for them that stoned him, that they might not be punished. By the might of his love he overcame Saul his cruel persecutor; and earned for a comrade in heaven, the very man who had done him to death upon earth.

We have already remarked that the Lord's words, Fill ye up the measure of your fathers, 32, refer in the first place to Himself, Whom the Jews afterwards put to death. In a secondary sense it may likewise be applied to His disciples, of whom He saith, Behold, I send unto you Prophets, and wise men, and Scribes. Here observe that, according to the Apostle writing to the Corinthians, 1 Cor. xii. 4, there are diversities of gifts among Christ's followers. Some are Prophets of that which is to come; some are wise men, who know the due season for rebuke and exhortation; some are Scribes learned in the law. And of these they stoned Stephen, slew Paul with the sword, crucified Peter, and scourged the Disciples mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles. v, 40; xvi, 23.

I have read various opinions in various places upon this question, and I will give each. First, some hold that Zacharias the son of Barachias is the eleventh of the twelve Minor Prophets; and this opinion is supported by the father's name. But the Bible nowhere telleth us that this Prophet was slain between the temple and the altar; and it is hardly possible that he can have been, for in his time it could scarcely be said that even the ruins of the temple were in existence. Secondly, others maintain that this Zacharias was Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist. This interpretation is derived from the dreams of the Apocryphal Gospels, wherein it is asserted that he was martyred for preaching Christ's coming.

A third school will have it that this Zacharias, the son of Barachias, was that Zacharias of whom we read, in Chron. xxiv. 22, that he was slain by Joash, king of Judah, between the temple and the altar. Against this it is to be remarked, that that Zacharias was not the son of Barachias, but of Jehoiada the priest; whence it is written, Joash remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him. The question therefore ariseth, if this opinion be true, why, the name and manner of death both agreeing with this explanation, Zacharias is called the son, not of Jehoiada, but of Barachias. In Hebrew, Barachias signifieth the Blessed of the Lord, and Jehoiada proves his Righteousness. In the Gospel used by the Nazarenes the name of Jehoiada is used instead of Barachias.

Martirologio {anticipated}
Anno del Signore 2026, 27 Dicembre, Luna 18

Presso Efeso il natale di san Giovanni, Apostolo ed Evangelista, il quale, dopo avere scritto il Vangelo, dopo essere stato relegato in esilio e dopo la divina Apocalisse, vivendo fino al tempo del Principe Traiano, fondò e governò le Chiese di tutta l'Asia, e finalmente, consunto dalla vecchiaia, mori nell'anno sessantottesimo dopo la passione del Signore, e fu sepolto presso la detta città.
A Costantinópoli i santi Confessori Teodoro e Teófane fratelli, i quali, allevati fin dalla fanciullezza nel monastero Palestinese di san Saba, combattendo animosamente contro Leóne Armèno per il culto delle sante immagini, per comando di lui furono battuti colle verghe e mandati in esilio. Però, morto lo stesso Leóne, di nuovo costantemente resistendo all'Imperatore Teófilo, il quale era infetto della medesima empietà, vennero di nuovo battuti colle verghe e cacciati in esilio, dove Teodoro morì in prigione. Teófane poi, resa finalmente la pace alla Chiesa, fu fatto Vescovo di Nicéa, e illustre per la gloria della confessione si riposò nel Signore.
Ad Alessandria san Màssimo Vescovo, il quale si rese assai celebre ed illustre per la sua confessione.
A Costantinópoli santa Nicarète Vergine, la quale, sotto l'Imperatore Claudio, rifulse per santità.

Martyrology {anticipated}
December 27th 2026, the 18th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Ephesus, the holy Apostle and Evangelist John. After the writing of his Gospel after his return from exile, and after the Revelation which God gave unto him, he lived on until the time of the Emperor Trajan, and founded and governed the churches of all Asia. He died of old age in the sixty-eighth year after the death of Christ (about the year 101), and was buried hard by the city of Ephesus.
At Alexandria, holy Maximus, Pope of that See, who was eminently worthy to be called a confessor (in the year 282).
At Constantinople the holy brethren Theodore (Grapt) and Theophanes. They were bred up from their childhood in the monastery of St. Saba, and afterwards stoutly contended for the honouring of holy images against the Emperor Leo the Armenian, for the which he caused them to be beaten and sent into exile, and after his death they still stoutly withstood the Emperor Theophilus, who was held captive by the same ungodliness, for the which he also caused them to be again beaten and driven into exile. Theodore died in prison, but Theophanes, after that peace was given back to the Church, was made Bishop of Nice, and fell asleep in peace in the Lord (ninth century).
Likewise, at Constantinople, the holy virgin Niceras, who was eminent for her holiness, in the time of the Emperor Arcadius (about the year 440).

118:118 Tu hai disprezzato tutti quelli che deviano dai tuoi giudizi, * perché il loro pensiero è ingiusto.
118:119 Riputai prevaricatori tutti i peccatori della terra: * perciò amai le tue testimonianze.
118:120 Crocifiggi col tuo timore le carni mie: * perché ho temuto i tuoi giudizi.
118:121 (Ain) Ho praticato la rettitudine e la giustizia; * non darmi in potere di quelli che mi calunniano.
118:122 Sostieni il tuo servo nel bene; * non mi calunnino i superbi.
118:123 I miei occhi vennero meno per la brama della tua salvezza, * e delle parole della tua giustizia.
118:124 Tratta col tuo servo, secondo la tua misericordia, * e insegnami le tue ordinazioni.
118:125 Io sono tuo servo; * dammi intelletto, affinché intenda le tue testimonianze.
118:126 È tempo di agire, o Signore, * essi hanno dissipato la tua legge.
118:127 Perciò io ho amato i tuoi comandamenti * più dell'oro e del topazio.
118:128 Perciò m'incamminai all'osservanza di tutti i tuoi comandamenti: * ebbi in odio ogni via d'iniquità.
