Giovanni Apostolo, che Gesù amava moltissimo, figlio di Zebedeo e fratello di Giacomo Apostolo decapitato da Erode dopo la passione del Signore, dietro preghiera dei vescovi dell'Asia, scrisse, ultimo fra tutti, il Vangelo contro Cerinto ed altri eretici, e specialmente contro la dottrina che cominciava a sorgere degli Ebioniti, i quali pretendono che Cristo non sia esistito prima di Maria: ciò lo determinò a proclamare la generazione divina di lui.

Nell'anno dunque decimo quarto di Domiziano, nella persecuzione, suscitata da questo, la seconda dopo Nerone, relegato nell'isola di Patmos, scrisse l'Apocalisse, che fu interpretata da Giustino Martire e da Ireneo. Ucciso poi Domiziano e annullati dal senato gli atti di lui perché troppo crudeli, sotto il governo di Nerva ritornò ad Efeso dove, dimorando fino all'impero di Traiano, fondò e governò tutte le chiese dell'Asia: e stremato dalla vecchiezza, morì nell'anno sessantotto dopo la passione del Signore, e fu sepolto presso la medesima città.

Quella si svolge tutta quaggiù sino alla fine di questo secolo allorché avrà termine; quella non riceverà la sua perfezione che alla consumazione di questo secolo, ma nel secolo futuro non avrà fine. Perciò a questo è detto: «Seguimi» Joann. 21,22. Dell'altro invece «Se io voglio ch'egli rimanga finché venga io cosa t'importa? tu seguimi». Che significa ciò? Per quanto so, per quanto capisco, che significa ciò? se non: tu seguimi imitandomi nel sopportare i mali temporali: l'altro rimanga, finché io venga a dare i beni eterni.

The Apostle John whom Jesus loved was a son of Zebedee, and brother of the Apostle James, who was beheaded by Herod soon after our Lord suffered. He was the last of the Evangelists to write his Gospel, which he published at the request of the Bishops of Asia, against Cerinthus and other heretics, and particularly against the then spreading doctrine of the Ebionites, who asserted that Christ had had no existence before Mary. It was therefore needful for the Evangelist to declare His Eternal and Divine Generation.

In the fourteenth year after Nero, Domitian stirred up the second persecution, and John was exiled to the island of Patmos, where he wrote his Apocalypse, which hath been explained by Justin the Martyr and Irenaeus. When Domitian was killed, the Senate annulled all his acts, on account of his savage cruelty, and the Apostle returned to Ephesus, during the reign of Nerva. He remained at Ephesus until the time of Trajan, and founded and governed all the Churches of Asia. There, in an extreme old age, he died, in the sixty-eighth year after the Lord's passion, and was buried near the city.
