2 E il Signore fu con lui, e gli riusciva bene tutto quel che faceva : e abitava in casa del suo padrone,
3 Il quale conosceva benissimo che il Signore era con lui e che faceva riuscir bene in mano di lui tutto quel che faceva.
4 E Giuseppe trovò grazia presso del suo padrone, e lo serviva : dal quale preposto a ogni cosa egli governava la casa affidatagli e tutto ciò che gli era stato consegnato :

E se quel Giuseppe, venduto per invidia dai fratelli e condotto in Egitto, prefigurò la vendita di Cristo ; il nostro Giuseppe, fuggendo l'invidia d'Erode, portò Cristo in Egitto. Quegli per rimaner fedele al suo padrone, non volle acconsentire alle voglie della sua padrona : questi, riconoscendo vergine la sua Signora madre del suo Signore, si mantenne continente e fu il suo fedele custode. A quello fu data l'intelligenza dei sogni misteriosi ; a questo fu concesso d'essere il confidente e cooperatore dei celesti misteri.

Il primo conservò il frumento non per sé, ma per tutto il popolo : il secondo ricevé la custodia del Pane vivo celeste e per sé e per tutto il mondo. Non v'ha dubbio che questo Giuseppe, cui fu sposata la Madre del Salvatore, sia stato un uomo buono e fedele. Voglio dire, «un servo fedele e prudente» Matth. 24,45, che il Signore costituì conforto della Madre sua, sostegno della sua infanzia, infine il solo e fedelissimo cooperatore in terra del gran disegno.

Perché fu concepito non da una semplice vergine, ma da una sposata? Primo, perché dalla genealogia di Giuseppe si mostrasse la stirpe di Maria ; secondo, perch'ella non fosse lapidata dai Giudei come adultera: terzo, perché fuggitiva in Egitto avesse un sostegno. Il martire Ignazio aggiunge ancora una quarta ragione perché egli fu concepito da una sposata : affinché, dice, il suo concepimento rimanesse celato al diavolo, che lo credé il frutto non di una vergine, ma di una maritata.

Dal dirsi poi: « Prima che stessero insieme », non ne segue che stessero insieme dopo: perché la Scrittura constata ciò che non era avvenuto.

Se uno si unisce a cattiva donna, diventa un sol corpo con essa » 1Cor. 6, 16, e nella legge è prescritto, che non solo i rei, ma anche i complici del delitto sono colpevoli : come dunque Giuseppe, occultando il delitto della sposa, è chiamato giusto? We may gather it from his very name, which, being interpreted, signifieth Increase. Remember likewise that great Patriarch who was sold into Egypt, and know that the Husband of Mary not only received his name, but inherited his purity, and was likened to him in innocence and in grace.

If then, that Joseph that was sold by his brethren through envy, and was brought down to Egypt, was a type of Christ sold by a disciple, and handed over to the Gentiles, the other Joseph flying from the envy of Herod carried Christ into Egypt. That first Joseph kept loyal to his master, and would not carnally know his master's wife; that second Joseph knew that the Lady, the Mother of his Lord, was a virgin, and he himself remained faithfully virgin toward her. To that first Joseph it was given to know dark things in interpreting of dreams; to the second Joseph it was given in sleep to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven.

Why was the Lord conceived of an espoused virgin rather than of a free? First, for the sake of the genealogy of Mary, which we have obtained by that of Joseph. Secondly, because she was thus saved from being stoned by the Jews as an adulteress. Thirdly, that Himself and His mother might have a guardian on their journey into Egypt. To these, Ignatius, the martyr of Antioch, has added a fourth reason namely, that the birth might take place unknown to the devil, who would naturally suppose that Mary had conceived by Joseph.

The history which we here read in the Holy Gospel hath for us specially two gracious lessons, the one from the literal, the other from the mystic interpretation thereof. According to the letter then, we see how quickly the compassion of God was aroused by the sorrow of this mother, who was a widow, a widow broken down by nursing her only son, or by the bitterness of her grief for his death. She was a widow also whose worshipful conversation is borne witness to by this, that, much people of the city was with her. Mystically however, this widow encompassed by the multitude was something more than a poor woman whose tears won from the Lord the resurrection of her young and only son; for she is a type of our holy Mother the Church, who calleth back her young children to life from the pursuit of deathly vanities, and soul-slaying honours, by bidding them look on those tears which she sheddeth for such as they, and which it is unlawful for her to shed for them of whom she knoweth that they will rise again.
