Gregorio, nobile Cappadociano, soprannominato il Teologo per la sua scienza singolare nelle divine Lettere, nacque a Nazianzo nella Cappadócia, ed istruitosi in Atene in ogni genere di scienze insieme con san Basilio, si applicò allo studio delle sacre Scritture; nelle quali si esercitarono poi insieme nel monastero per alcuni anni, interpretandole non secondo il proprio ingegno, ma secondo il ragionamento e la autorità dei maggiori. Mentre essi fiorivano per dottrina e santità di vita, chiamati al ministero della predicazione della verità evangelica, generarono a Cristo moltissimi figli.

Lettura 5
Gregorio pertanto, tornato dopo qualche tempo a casa, fu prima creato vescovo di Sasima, poi amministratore della chiesa di Nazianzo. Chiamato quindi a Costantinopoli a reggervi quella chiesa, egli purgò la città dagli errori dell'eresia e la ricondusse alla fede cattolica, cosa che doveva conciliargli il massimo affetto da tutti e invece gli attirò l'invidia di molti. Ed essendosi manifestato gran dissenso fra i vescovi a suo riguardo, egli rinunziò spontaneamente all'episcopato, applicandosi le parole del profeta: «Se questa tempesta s'è suscitata per me, gettatemi in mare, affinché voi cessiate d'essere agitati» Jon. 1,12. Quindi ritornato a Nazianzo, dopo aver fatto dare il governo di quella chiesa ad Eulalio, si consacrò interamente alla contemplazione e composizione di cose divine.

Scrisse poi molto, e in prosa e in versi, con una pietà ed eloquenza meravigliosa; e a giudizio di persone dotte e sante nulla trovasi in questi scritti che non sia conforme alle regole della vera pietà e della fede cattolica, nulla che possa essere da alcuno ragionevolmente contestato. Fu l'acerrimo difensore della consustanzialità del Figlio. E com'egli non è inferiore a nessuno per la santità della vita, così sorpassa facilmente tutti gli altri per la gravità dello stile. Quindi: Se il sale diventasse scipito, con che cosa lo si potrà render salato? Vale a dire se voi, mediante i quali si devono condire, per così dire, i popoli, per timore delle persecuzioni nel tempo perderete il regno dei cieli, quali saranno gli uomini, mediante i quali si elimini da voi l'errore, dato che il Signore vi ha scelti per eliminare l'errore degli altri?

Quindi: Non serve a nulla il sale scipito, se non per essere gettato fuori e calpestato dagli uomini. Voi siete la luce del mondo Mt 5, 14. Come prima ha detto: sale della terra, così ora dice: luce del mondo. Difatti neanche prima per terra si deve intendere quella che calpestiamo con i piedi, ma gli uomini che vivono sulla terra, o anche i peccatori, perché il Signore ha inviato il sale apostolico per condirli e impedirne la putrefazione. E qui per mondo è opportuno intendere non il cielo e la terra, ma gli uomini che sono nel mondo o amano il mondo, perché gli apostoli sono stati inviati a illuminarli. Non può rimanere nascosta una città collocata sul monte, cioè fondata su una insigne e grande onestà, simboleggiata anche dal monte in cui il Signore sta insegnando.

Gregory, to whom, is commonly given, on account of his extraordinary depth of sacred learning, the title of “the Divine”, was a noble Cappadocian, born at Nazianzus in that country, and educated at Athens along with St. Basil, with whom likewise, when they had acquired knowledge in diverse branches of earthly learning, he gave himself up to learn the things of God. This they did for some years in a Monastery, framing their opinions, not out of their own heads, but according to the interpretation arrived at by the wisdom and decision of the ancients. They were both distinguished by power of doctrine and holiness of life, they were both called to the duty of preaching the Gospel of truth and, through the Gospel. they both begat many sons unto Christ.

Gregory after a while returned home. He was first made Bishop of Sasima, and afterwards administered the Church at Nazianzus. Then he was called to rule the Church of Constantinople. That city, which he found reeking with heresy, he purged, and brought again to the Catholic faith. But this, which deserved for him the warmest love of all men, raised up many enemies. Among the Bishops themselves there was a great party against him, and to still their contentions, he, of his own free will, gave up his see, saying with the Prophet Jonah: “Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea so shall the sea be calm unto you for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you,” i. 12. So he went his way back again to Nazianzus, and when he had seen that Eulalius was set over that Church, he gave himself up altogether to think and write concerning the things of God.

He wrote much, both in prose and verse, with wonderful godliness and eloquence. According to the judgment of learned and holy men, there is nothing in his writings which anywhere strays from the line of true godliness and Catholic truth, and not a single word which any one can justly call in doubt. He was one of the latest champions of the doctrine that the Son is of one substance with the Father. No one has ever won greater praise for goodness of life, neither was any man more earnest in prayer. During the reign of the Emperor Theodosius, he dwelt in the country after the manner of a monk, and unceasingly taken up with writing and reading, until, in a good old age, he laid down his earthly, to enter on an heavenly life.

The Lord would have us understand how that men do lose their power of savouring others with righteousness when they are willing to place their eternal welfare in jeopardy for the sake of any témporal advantage, like as attainment of ease or luxury, or escape from suffering or toil. For that which is eternal, unlike things of this world, can neither be bestowed by men, nor by them taken away. Hence, when he asketh: If the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? he would have us understand the question to be: If ye, by whom mankind is preserved from corruption, be willing to lose the kingdom of heaven so as to escape trials or persecutions in this world, who is there to preserve you from corruption, seeing ye are they that God hath chosen to preserve all others from corruption?

Sant'Antonino, dell'Ordine dei Predicatori, Vescovo di Firénze e Confessore, il cui giorno natalizio si commemora il due di questo mese.
A Roma, sulla via Latina, il natale dei santi Martiri Gordiano ed Epimaco. Il primo, per la confessione del nome di Cristo, al tempo di Giuliano l'Apòstata, lungamente battuto con flagelli piombati e da ultimo decapitato, fu sepolto di notte dai Cristiani sulla stessa via nella cripta, in cui poco prima erano state trasportate le reliquie del beato Epimaco Martire, da Alessandria, dove egli, per la fede di Cristo, avea compiuto il martirio il dodici Dicembre.
Nella terra di Us san Giòbbe Profeta, uomo di meravigliosa pazienza.
A Roma il beato Calepódio, Prete e Martire, il quale dall'Imperatore Alessandro fu fatto uccidere colla spada, ed il suo corpo trascinato per la città e gettato nel Tèvere. Il Papa Callisto poi, avendolo ritrovato, lo seppellì. Fu pure decollato il Console Palmàzio colla moglie, coi figli ed altri quarantadue della sua casa dell'uno e dell'altro sesso; inoltre il Senatore Simplicio colla moglie ed altri sessantotto della sua famiglia; come pure anche Felice colla sua moglie Blanda. Le loro teste poi furono appese alle diverse porte di Roma, a terrore dei Cristiani.
Così pure a Roma, a Centocèlle, sulla via Latina, il natale dei santi Martiri Quarto e Quinto, i cui corpi furono trasportati a Càpua. Presso Lentini, nella Sicilia, i santi Martiri Alfio, Filadèlfo e Cirino.
A Smirne san Dioscòride Martire.
Presso Taranto san Cataldo Vescovo, illustre per miracoli. A Madrid sant'Isidòro agricoltore, il quale, illustre per miracoli, dal Papa Gregòrio decimoquinto fu iscritto nel catalogo dei Santi, insieme coi santi Ignazio, Francèsco Savèrio, Terèsa e Filippo Neri. A Milano l'Invenzione dei santi Martiri Nazario e Celso, nella quale il beato Ambrogio Vescovo ritrovò il corpo di san Nazario bagnato di sangue ancora fresco, e lo trasportò alla Basilica degli Apostoli, insieme col corpo del beato fanciullo Celso, che Nazario stesso aveva nutrito, e Anolino, nella persecuzione di Neròne, avea fatto uccidere di spada insieme a lui il ventotto Luglio, giorno nel quale si celebra la festa del loro glorioso martirio.

Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow we keep the feast of the holy Confessor Antonine, Archbishop of Florence, whose birth into the better life is told upon the 2nd day of May.
May 10th 2026, the 23rd day of the Moon, is kept

At Rome, on the Latin Way, the birthday of the holy martyrs Gordian and Epimachus. Gordian was long beaten with whips loaded with lead, and at last beheaded, in the time of the Emperor Julian the Apostate, because of his confession of Christ's Name. The Christians buried his body at night upon the aforesaid Latin Way, in the same underground place whither had a little while before been brought from Alexandria the remains of the blessed martyr Epimachus, who had there suffered martyrdom for believing in Christ.
In the land of Uz is commemorated the holy prophet Job, a man of wondrous patience.
At Rome, the blessed priest and martyr Calepodius, whom the Emperor Alexander [Severus] caused to be slain with the sword, and his body to be dragged through the city and cast into the Tiber; when it had been found it was buried by Pope Callistus.
Moreover, at Rome also, there were beheaded the Consul Palmatius, along with his wife and children and forty-two others of both sexes of his house; also the Senator Simplicius, with his wife and sixty-eight of his household; also Felix, with his wife Blanda. Their heads were hung up at the different gates of the city to be a terror to Christians.
Also at Rome, at the Hundred Halls, upon the Latin Way, are commemorated the holy martyrs Quartus and Quintus, whose bodies were taken to Capua.
At Lentini, in Sicily, [in the third century,] the holy martyrs Alphius, Philadelphus, and Cyrinus.
At Smyrna, the holy martyr Dioscoredes.
At Bologna, [in the year 1443,] the blessed Nicholas Albergati, Bishop of that city, a Charterhouse monk, and Cardinal of the holy Roman Church, famous for his holiness and for his work as Legate of the Apostolic See. His body is buried in the Charterhouse at Florence.
At Taranto, [at the end of the seventh century,] the holy Catald, Bishop [of that city, an Irish monk,] famous for wonders.
At Milan is commemorated the finding of the bodies of the holy martyrs Nazarius and Celsus. The blessed Bishop Ambrose found the body of holy Nazarius still marked with fresh blood, and took it to the Cathedral Church of the Apostles along with the body of the blessed child Celsus, to whom Nazarius had been foster-father. In the persecution under Nero, Anolinus commanded them both together to be slain with the sword upon the 29th day of July, upon the which day is kept [at Milan] the feast of their martyrdom.
At Madrid, [in the year 1175,] the holy Isidore the husbandman, famous for wonders, whom Pope Gregory XV enrolled in the list of the Saints along with holy Ignatius of Loyola, Francis Xavier, Teresa, and Philip Neri.
