Dal libro di sant'Ambrogio Vescovo sulla fede nella risurrezione
Dopo la metà
Siccome la Sapienza di Dio non poteva morire e siccome non si può risuscitare se non si muore, (il Verbo) prese una carne mortale, affin di morire in questa carne soggetta alla morte e di risuscitarvi una volta morto. Difatti la risurrezione non poteva avvenire che per mezzo d'un uomo, perché è detto: «come da un uomo la morte, così pure da un uomo la risurrezione dei morti» 1Cor. 15,21. Egli dunque risuscitò in quanto uomo perché morì in quanto uomo: egli è insieme uomo risuscitato e Dio risuscitante. Allora si mostrò uomo quanto alla carne, ora si mostra Dio in tutto. Perché noi ora non conosciamo più Cristo tale quale era secondo la carne, ma la sua carne è causa che noi lo conosciamo come primizia dei dormienti, come primogenito dei morti.

Le primizie, certo, sono della stessa specie e della stessa natura degli altri frutti: di cui si offrono a Dio le primizie in riconoscenza d'una raccolta abbondante; offerta sacra per tutti i suoi doni, offerta per così dire della natura rinnovellata. Cristo dunque è primizia di quelli che sono nel riposo. Ma egli lo è soltanto di quelli che riposano in lui, che, liberatisi dalla morte, sono sotto l'impero d'un dolce sonno, o lo è di tutti i morti? «Ma come tutti muoiono in Adamo, così tutti saranno vivificati in Cristo» Cor. 15,22. E perciò come le primizie della morte si trovano in Adamo, così le primizie della risurrezione sono in Cristo, e tutti risorgeranno. Pertanto nessuno disperi, né il giusto si dolga di questa comune risurrezione, aspettando egli una ricompensa tutta speciale della sua virtù. «Tutti certo risorgeranno, dice l'Apostolo, ma ciascuno al proprio posto» (Ibi). Il frutto della clemenza divina è comune a tutti, ma distinto sarà l'ordine dei meriti.

Osserviamo quanto è grave il sacrilegio di non credere alla risurrezione. Perché se noi non risorgiamo, Cristo dunque è morto inutilmente, Cristo dunque non è risorto. Difatti s'egli non è risuscitato per noi, egli non è risuscitato in alcun modo, non avendo egli alcun motivo di risuscitare per se stesso. Il mondo è risuscitato in lui, il cielo è risuscitato in lui. la terra è risuscitata in lui. «Ci sarà un cielo nuovo e una terra nuova» 2Petri 3,13. Per lui, che i legami della morte non trattenevano, la risurrezione non era punto necessaria. Perché sebbene egli sia morto come uomo, tuttavia era libero negli stessi inferni. Vuoi sapere quant'era libero? «Son divenuto come un uomo senza aiuto, io che fra i morti libero (scendo)» Ps. 87,5. E veramente libero, perché poteva risuscitarsi, secondo sta scritto: «Disfate questo tempio, e in tre giorni lo rimetterò in piedi» Joann. 2,19. E veramente libero, egli che era disceso per redimere gli altri.

Ora dobbiamo spiegare queste parole del Signore: «In verità, in verità vi dico: se domanderete qualche cosa al Padre in mio nome, egli ve la darà» Joann. 16,23. Abbiamo già detto nella prima parte di questo discorso del Signore, per istruzione di quelli che si rivolgono al Padre, in nome di Cristo e non sono esauditi, che ogni preghiera contraria agli interessi della salute, non è fatta a nome del Salvatore. Poiché per le parole: «In mio nome», non si deve intendere un, suono di lettere e di sillabe, ma ciò che questo suono significa e ciò che con esso giustamente e veramente si deve intendere.

Perciò chi pensa di Cristo quel che non si deve pensare dell'unigenito Figlio di Dio, non domanda in suo nome, sebbene pronunzi le lettere e le sillabe (che formano il nome) di Cristo: perché egli prega in nome di colui ch'è presente al suo pensiero allorché prega. Chi invece pensa di lui ciò che si deve pensare, questi prega in suo nome: ed ottiene quanto domanda, se tuttavia non domanda nulla di contrario alla sua eterna salvezza. Però l'ottiene quando è bene per lui di ottenerlo. Infatti ci sono delle grazie che non ci vengono negate: ma ci sono differite per esserci concesse a tempo opportuno. Si deve dunque intendere con queste parole: «Ve la darà» Joann. 16,24; che egli ha voluto designarvi i benefici particolari a quelli che li domandano. Difatti tutti i Santi sono esauditi per se stessi, ma non lo sono sempre per tutti, per i loro amici o nemici o chiunque altro: perché il Signore non dice assolutamente: «La darà»; ma: «La darà a voi».

Neither was it possible that the resurrection of the dead should come otherwise than by man, “for since by man came death, by Man came also the resurrection of the dead.” 1 Cor. xv. 21. Man He rose since Man He died, the Manhood quickened but the Godhead Quickener. Man then, as touching the Flesh God now, over all things. For now we know Christ no longer after the Flesh, but we owe it to the Flesh that we know Him as “become the First-fruits of them that slept” 1 Cor. xv. 23 “and the First-begotten of the dead” Apoc. i. 5.

The first-fruits are of the same kind and nature as the other fruits, and they are brought as an offering to God, to win His blessing on the in-gathering, an holy offering made on behalf of all, and as it were the homage of restored nature. But is He the First-fruits of only His own loved ones that fall asleep in Him, and lie as it were untouched by death, wrapt in a sweet slumber Or is He the First-fruits of all the dead? We have now to consider these words of the Lord “Amen, Amen, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in My Name, He will give it you.” It hath already been said in the earlier part of this discourse of the Lord, for the sake of some who ask the Father in Christ's Name and receive not, that whatsoever is asked, which tendeth not to salvation, is not asked in the Name of the Saviour. By the words “In My Name” we must not understand the vocalization of letters and syllables, but the meaning of what is said, the honest and true meaning.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Therefore, whosoever thinketh of Christ as he ought not to think of the Only Son of God, such an one doth not ask anything in Christ's Name, although he do actually utter letters and syllables to that effect, because by these sounds he meaneth not the Real Christ, but a fancied being who hath no existence except in the speaker's imagination. But on the other hand, whosoever thinketh of Christ as he ought to think, the same asketh in Christ's Name, and receiveth, provided only it be nothing against his own everlasting salvation but if it is good for him to receive, he receiveth. Some things are not given at once, but kept over till a more fitting season. Such is the true interpretation of the words “He will give it you” namely, that those things will be given which are good for them to ask. All the Saints also are heard when they ask for themselves, but not necessarily when they ask for their friends, or their enemies, or others, even as it is written, not simply “He will give it” but “He will give it you.”

A Roma, sulla via Salaria, il natale del beato Antimo Prete, il quale, dopo molte insigni opere di virtù e di predicazione, nella persecuzione di Diocleziano, fu gettato nel Tèvere, ma liberato da un Angelo fu rimesso nel suo oratorio; poi, decapitato, se ne andò vincitore al cielo.
Nello stesso luogo sant'Evéllio Martire, il quale, essendo della famiglia di Neròne, in occasione del martirio di san Torpète credette in Cristo, per il quale fu anche decollato.
Così pure a Roma i santi Martiri Màssimo, Basso e Fabio, uccisi sotto Diocleziano sulla via Salaria.
Ad Osimo, nel Picèno, i santi Martiri Sisinio Diacono, Dioclèzio e Fiorènzo, discepoli di sant'Antimo Prete; i quali compirono il martirio con la lapidazione sotto Diocleziano.

Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow we keep the feast of the holy Pope of Rome, Pius, fifth of that name, a Friar Preacher, of whom mention is made upon the 5th day of this present month. He toiled manfully and hopefully for the restoration of the discipline of the Church, for the extirpation of heresies, and for the defeat of the enemies of the Christian name, and ruled the Catholic Church in holiness of life and government.
May 11th 2026, the 24th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Rome, the Lesser Litanies in the church of St. Mary Major.
At Rome, upon the Salarian Way, the blessed Priest Anthimus. After he had done excellently well in power and preaching, he was thrown into the Tiber during the persecution under Diocletian, and thence delivered by an angel, who brought him back to his own oratory but he was lastly beheaded, and so passed into heaven as a conqueror.
Upon the same day, the holy martyr Evellius. He was one of Nero's household, who believed on Christ on seeing the passion of the holy martyr Torpes, and was therefore beheaded.
Also at Rome, the holy martyrs Maximus, Bassus, and Fabius, who were killed upon the Salarian Way, in the persecution under Diocletian.
At Camarino, the holy martyrs Anastasius and his Companions, who were put to death under Antiochus the President, in the persecution under Decius.

In the town of Grotaglia, in the Diocese of Taranto, [in the year 1716,] the holy Confessor Francis di Girolamo, of the Society of Jesus, an example of singular love and patience in seeking the salvation of souls. Pope Gregory XVI enrolled his name with those of the Saints. His burial is commemorated with great solemnity in the church of the Professed House of his Order at Naples, where his body lieth.
