Vedi, infatti, come costui che andò a trovare un suo amico a mezzanotte per domandargli tre pani, e persisté nel domandarli, non fu deluso nell'oggetto della sua domanda. Che significano questi tre pani, se non l'alimento dei celesti misteri? Che se amerai il Signore Dio tuo, potrai meritare i suoi doni non solo per te, ma anche per gli altri. Chi è più nostro amico di colui che diede il suo corpo per noi?

Egli non temeva di rompere il sonno di colui che sapeva che veglia sempre. Ricordandoci quindi (di queste parole) delle Scritture, imploriamo il perdono dei nostri peccati perseverando giorno e notte nella preghiera.

Perché se un uomo così santo (come Davide) così occupato negli affari del regno, celebrava la lode del Signore sette volte al giorno, ed era sempre assiduo ai sacrifizi del mattino e della sera; che dobbiamo fare noi, che tanto più dobbiamo pregare in quanto che più frequentemente manchiamo per la debolezza della carne e dello spirito, affinché, stanchi per la via ed estremamente affaticati per il nostro cammino in questo mondo e per le asprezze di questa vita, non ci venga a mancare quel pane rifocillante che corrobora il cuore dell'uomo? Né soltanto a mezzanotte il Signore c'insegna di vegliare, ma quasi ad ogni momento. Infatti egli viene la sera, alla seconda, e alla terza vigilia: e ha l'abitudine di bussare. «Beati perciò quei servi, che il Signore, quando giungerà, troverà vigilanti» Luc. 12,37.
