Lettura 4
Roberto di Montepulciano, della famiglia Patrizia dei Bellarmino, ebbe per madre la piissima Cintia Cervini sorella di Papa Marcello II. Egli rifulse subito per esimia pietà e costumi castissimi, una sola cosa bramando, di piacere solo a Dio e di guadagnare anime a Cristo. Frequentò il collegio cittadino della Compagnia di Gesù con somma lode d'ingegno e di modestia; e, a diciotto anni, entrato in Roma nella medesima Compagnia, fu esempio a tutti di religiose virtù. Terminato nel Collegio Romano il corso di filosofia, fu prima mandato a Firenze, poi a Mondovì, quindi a Padova per studiarvi sacra teologia e infine a Lovanio dove, non ancora sacerdote, disimpegnò magnificamente l'ufficio di predicatore. Inoltre, ordinato sacerdote a Lovanio, insegnò la teologia così che ricondusse moltissimi eretici all'unità della Chiesa, e fu avuto per chiarissimo teologo in Europa, e S. Carlo Vescovo di Milano e altri lo desiderarono grandemente.

Lettura 5
Richiamato a Roma per desiderio di Papa Gregorio XIII, insegnò nel Collegio Romano la scienza teologica sulle controversie: e ivi eletto maestro di vita spirituale, diresse l'angelico giovane Luigi nelle vie della santità. Egli stesso governò secondo la mente di S. Ignazio il Collegio Romano e poi la Provincia Napoletana della Compagnia di Gesù. Richiamato di nuovo in Roma, fu adoperato da Clemente VIII in negozi importantissimi della Chiesa, con grandissimo vantaggio della cosa cristiana; poscia nolente e invano riluttante fu annoverato nel numero dei Cardinali, perché, come apertamente asserì lo stesso Pontefice, allora la Chiesa di Dio non ne aveva uno uguale nella dottrina. Consacrato Vescovo dal medesimo Pontefice amministrò santissimamente per un triennio l'Archidiocesi di Capua: deposto il quale incarico, visse in Roma fino alla morte, consigliere integerrimo e fedelissimo del Sommo Pontefice. Scrisse molto e con molta chiarezza, ed egli è meritevole primieramente perché, avendo S. Tommaso per duce e maestro, provvido conoscitore delle necessità de' suoi tempi, con invincibile forza di dottrina e amplissima copia di testimonianze attinta acconciamente dalle Sacre Scritture e dalla ricchissima fonte dei Santi Padri, sconfisse i nuovi errori, valoroso assertore principalmente della tradizione cattolica e dei diritti del Romano Pontificato. Egli è celebre anche per parecchi libri di pietà, specialmente per l'aureo catechismo che, sebbene carico di altri gravissimi affari, sia a Capua sia a Roma non cessava d'insegnare ai fanciulli e agl'ignoranti. Un Cardinale coetaneo giudicò Roberto mandato da Dio per istruire i cattolici, coltivare i pii, abbattere gli eretici; S. Francesco di Sales lo stimò una fonte di Dottrina; il Sommo Pontefice Benedetto XIV lo disse il martello degli eretici, e Benedetto XV lo propose esempio ai propagatori e difensori della religione cattolica.

Lettura 6
Amantissimo della vita religiosa, annoverato fra i padri cardinali, la osservò esemplarmente. Non volle ricchezze più del necessario; si contentò di poca servitù, di semplice apparato e abito: non lavorò alla ricchezza dei suoi, e si poté indurre appena a sollevarne la stessa loro miseria. Sentì bassissimamente di sé, e fu d'una meravigliosa semplicità di animo. Amò unicamente la Madre di Dio; dedicava ogni giorno più ore all'orazione. Vivendo frugalissimamente, digiunava tre volte la settimana: sempre austero con sé, arse di carità per il prossimo, appellato spessissimo il Padre dei poveri. Si sforzò diligentemente di non macchiare neppure con colpe leggere l'innocenza battesimale. Quasi ottuagenario, presso S. Andrea al Quirinale cadde nell'ultima malattia, che rese celebre col solito fulgore di virtù. Moribondo, si trovarono presenti Papa Gregorio XV e molti cardinali, compiangendo che venisse rapito un tanto sostegno della Chiesa. Il giorno delle stimmate di S. Francesco, la cui memoria aveva ottenuto che si celebrasse ovunque, s'addormentò
nel Signore, nell'anno 1621. Morto, tutta la città prese parte ai suoi funerali, acclamandolo unanimemente santo. Il Sommo Pontefice poi Pio XI prima l'iscrisse nel numero dei Beati e quindi dei Santi, e poco dopo, con decreto della Sacra Congregazione dei Riti, lo dichiarò Dottore della Chiesa universale. Il suo corpo riscuote pia venerazione in Roma nella chiesa di S. Ignazio, presso il sepolcro di S. Luigi, com'egli stesso aveva desiderato.

Predica ix ; Della probità dei Dottori della Chiesa; a principio
Come in Dio, che veneriamo uno nella Trinità e Trino nell'unità, spiccano singolarmente certe tre cose, la potenza, la sapienza e la bontà; così ancora, uditori, certi amici e figli suoi, i nostri padri e dottori, Iddio, per renderli a sé somigliantissimi e a tutte le genti ragguardevoli e ammirevoli, volle che fossero potentissimi, sapientissimi, ottimi e santissimi. Primieramente li armò di quella potenza, onde facessero, all'infuori del solito corso e ordine della natura, molte cose del tutto ammirevoli e singolari negli elementi, negli alberi, nei bruti animali, negli stessi uomini. Poi riempì le loro menti di tale sapienza, che non solo vedessero le cose presenti e passate, ma le future altresì molto prima e prevedessero e predicessero. Infine dilatò i loro cuori con somma e ardentissima carità, sia affinché essi intraprendessero l'opera con animo grande, sia affinché quelli che dovevano convertirsi per loro mezzo, fossero mossi non soltanto dalle parole e dai miracoli, ma ben anche dagli esempi e probità della vita.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,

I predicatori dunque della nostra legge, tanto quelli che primi ci portarono la fede e il Vangelo, tanto quelli che poi Dio nei vari secoli suscitò per la propagazione o per la conferma della fede, quali siano stati, quanto pii, quanto giusti, quanto religiosi, tutto il mondo lo sa. Guardate in primo luogo gli Apostoli. Che di più sublime o eccellente dei costumi degli Apostoli! Guardate dipoi quei santi uomini, che chiamiamo padri e dottori, quei chiarissimi luminari, che Dio ha voluto far risplendere nel firmamento della Chiesa, affinché per essi fossero dissipate tutte le tenebre degli eretici, come Ireneo, Cipriano, Ilario, Atanasio, Basilio, i due Gregori, Ambrogio, Girolamo, Agostino, Crisostomo, Cirillo. La vita e i costumi loro non risplendono forse, come in certi specchi, in quei monumenti ch'essi ci hanno lasciato ? Poiché «la bocca parla dalla pienezza del cuore» Matth. 12,34 Luc. 6,45.

Invero quanta umiltà congiunta con somma erudizione non apparisce dai libri dei santi padri? Quanta sobrietà? Niente v'ha di osceno, niente di turpe, niente di subdolo, niente di arrogante, niente di orgoglioso. In quanti svariati modi lo Spirito Santo, che abitava nei loro cuori, non si manifesta nelle loro pagine? Chi può leggere attentamente Cipriano, senza sentirsi ardere dell'amore del martirio? Chi ha studiato con diligenza Agostino senza apprenderne la profondissima umiltà? Chi ha sfogliato spesso Girolamo, che non cominci ad amare la verginità e il digiuno? Gli scritti dei santi spirano religione, castità, integrità, carità. Questi sono dunque i Vescovi e pastori (per servirmi delle parole del divo Agostino) dotti, gravi, santi, acerrimi difensori della verità, che la fede cattolica succhiarono col latte, presero col cibo: il cui latte e cibo somministrarono a piccoli e grandi. La santa Chiesa crebbe, dopo gli Apostoli, con tali piantatori, innaffiatori, edificatori, pastori, nutrii.

Reading 4
Robert, a native of Montepulciano and of the noble family of Bellarmine, had for his mother the most pious Cynthia Cervini, sister of Pope Marcellus II. From the first he was conspicuous for exemplary piety and most chaste manners, earnestly desiring this one thing, to please God alone and to win souls to Christ. He attended the college of the Society of Jesus in his native town where he was highly commended for his intelligence and modesty. At the age of eighteen he entered the same Society at Rome, and was a model of all religious virtues. Having passed through the course of philosophy at the Roman College, he was sent first to Florence, then to Monreale, later to Padua to teach sacred theology, and afterwards to Louvain where, not yet a priest, he ably discharged the office of preacher. After ordination at Louvain, he taught theology with such success that he brought back many heretics to the unity of the Church, and was regarded throughout Europe as a most brilliant theologian; and St. Charles, Bishop of Milan, and others keenly sought after him.

Recalled to Rome at the wish of Pope Gregory XIII, he taught the science of controversial theology at the Roman College, and there, as spiritual director he guided the angelic youth Aloysius in the paths of holiness. He governed the Roman College and then the Neapolitan province of the Society of Jesus in accordance with the spirit of St. Ignatius. Again summoned to Rome, he was employed by Clement VIII in the most important affairs of the Church, with the greatest advantage to the Christian state; then against his will and in spite of opposition, he was admitted among the number of the cardinals, because, as the Pontiff publicly declared, he did not have his equal among theologians in the Church of God at the time. He was consecrated bishop by the same Pope, and administered the archdiocese of Capua in a most saintly manner for three years: having resigned this office, he lived in Rome until his death, as a most impartial and trusty counsellor to the Supreme Pontiff. He wrote much, and in an admirable manner. His principal merit lieth in his complete victory in the struggle against the new errors, during which he distinguished himself as a strenuous and outstanding vindicator of Catholic tradition and the rights of the Roman See. He gained this victory by following St. Thomas as his guide and teacher, by a prudent consideration of the needs of his times, by his irrefragable teaching, and by a most abundant wealth of testimony well-chosen from the sacred writings and from the very rich fountain of the Fathers of the Church. He is eminently noted for very numerous short works for fostering piety, and especially for that golden Catechism, which he never failed to explain to the young and ignorant both at Capua and at Rome, although preoccupied with other very important affairs. A contemporary cardinal declared that Robert was sent by God the instruction of Catholics, for the guidance of the good, and for the confusion of heretics; St. Francis de Sales regarded him as a fountain of learning; the Supreme Pontiff Benedict XIV called him the hammer of heretics; and Benedict XV proclaimed him the model of promoters and defenders of the Catholic religion.

He was most zealous in the religious life and he maintained that manner of life after having been chosen as one of the empurpled cardinals. He did not want to any wealth beyond what was necessary; he was satisfied with a moderate household, and scanty fare and clothing. He did not strive to enrich his relatives, and he could scarcely be induced to relieve their poverty even occasionally. He had the lowest opinion of himself, and was of wonderful simplicity of soul. He had an extraordinary love for the Mother of God; he spent many hours daily in prayer. He ate very sparingly, and fasted three times a week. Uniformly austere with himself, he burned with charity towards his neighbour, and was often called the father of the poor. He earnestly strove that he might not stain his baptismal innocence to even the slightest fault. Almost eighty years old, he fell into his last illness at St. Andrew's on the Quirinal hill, and in it he shewed his usual radiant virtue. Pope Gregory XV and many cardinals visited him on his deathbed, lamenting the loss of such a great pillar of the Church. He fell asleep in the Lord in the year 1621, on the day of the sacred Stigmata of St. Francis, the memory of which he had been instrumental in having celebrated everywhere. The whole city mourned his death, unanimously proclaiming him a Saint. The Supreme Pontiff Pius XI inscribed his name, first, in the number of the Blessed, and then in that of the Saints, and shortly afterwards, by a decree of the Sacred Congregation of Rites, he declared him a Doctor of the universal Church. His body is honoured with pious veneration at Rome in the church of St. Ignatius, near the tomb of St. Aloysius, as he himself had desired.

Just as in God, whom we venerate as one in the Trinity and three in the Unity, there are three things in particular which are especially clear: power, wisdom, and goodness; so also God, beloved listeners, that he might make his special friends and children, our fathers and teachers, very like unto himself and to be esteemed and admired by all nations, wished them to be in the highest degree powerful, wise, excellent, and holy. First, he furnished them with that power, by which they might do many evidently wonderful and extraordinary things, out of the usual course and order of nature, in regard to the elements, trees, brute beasts, and even to mankind. Then, he gave them such wisdom, that they saw not only the past and present, but they even foresaw the future long before, and predicted it. Finally, he enlarged their hearts with very great and burning charity, enabling them not only to enter whole-heartedly on their labours, but also to influence those whom they were about to convert, as well by their example and holy life, as by their preaching and miracles.

Signore, di cui è proprio l'usar misericordia e perdonare, accetta la nostra preghiera; affinché noi e tutti i tuoi servi detenuti dai lacci del peccato siano pietosamente assolti dalla tua benigna bontà.
Esaudisci Signore, le preghiere dei supplicanti, e perdona ai tuoi servi i peccati, affinché noi tutti da te riceviamo pace e perdono.
Signore, mostraci pietoso l'ineffabile tua misericordia, la quale ci purghi da tutti i peccati e ci liberi da quelle pene che per essi abbiamo meritate.
Dio buono, che ti adiri per le colpe, e ti plachi per la penitenza, ascolta le preghiere del tuo popolo supplichevole ed allontana i flagelli dovuti alle nostre colpe.

Let us pray.
O God, it is according to thy nature always to show mercy and forgiveness. Receive our petition that we and all thy servants, bound by the chains of sin, may, by thy tender mercy, be pardoned.
We beg thee, O Lord, hear our prayers as we kneel before thee. Pardon our sins, as we confess them to thee, so that thou mayest, in thy kindness, give us pardon as well as peace.

Sul monte Oliveto Ascensione di nostro Signore Gesù Cristo.
A Tarso, nella Cilicia, il natale di san Bonifàcio Martire, il quale, martirizzato sotto Diocleziano e Massimiano, e quindi trasportato a Roma, fu sepolto sulla via Latina.
In Frància san Pònzio Martire, per la cui predicazione ed industria i due Imperatori Filippi si convertirono alla fede di Cristo, e poi, sotto i Principi Valeriane e Galliéno, ottenne la palma del martirio.
In Siria i santi Martiri Vittóre e Coróna, sotto l'Imperatore Antonino. Vittóre dal Giudice Sebastiano fu tormentato con vari ed orrendi supplizi. Coróna poi, moglie di un soldato, avendo cominciato a chiamarlo pubblicamente beato per la costanza del martirio, vide due corone discese dal cielo, mandate l'una a Vittóre e l'altra a sè; e testificando ciò alla presenza di tutti, fu squartata fra due alberi, mentre Vittóre fu decapitato.
Nella Sardégna le sante Martiri Giusta, Giustina ed Enedina.
A Perènto, nella Toscana, san Bonifàcio Vescovo, il quale (come riferisce il beato Gregório Papa) if n dalla fanciullezza rifulse per santità e per miracoli.
