Post beátam et gloriósam resurrectiónem Dómini nostri Jesu Christi, qua verum Dei templum, Judáica impietáte resolútum, divína in tríduo poténtia suscitávit, quadragenárius hódie, dilectíssimi, sanctórum diérum explétus est númerus, sacratíssima ordinatióne dispósitus, et ad utilitátem nostræ eruditiónis impénsus: ut, dum a Dómino in hoc spátio mora præséntiæ corporális exténditur, fides resurrectiónis documéntis necessáriis munirétur. Mors enim Christi multum discipulórum corda turbáverat: et de supplício crucis, de emissióne spíritus, de exanimáti córporis sepultúra gravátis mœstitúdine méntibus, quidam diffidéntiæ torpor obrépserat.

Sermone 1 sull'Ascensione del Signore
Quest'oggi, o dilettissimi, si compie il numero di quaranta giorni sacri trascorsi dopo la beata e gloriosa risurrezione di nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, colla quale, nello spazio di tre giorni, la potenza divina rialzò il vero tempio di Dio che l'empietà dei Giudei aveva distrutto, numero preordinato dalla santissima disposizione della provvidenza a nostra utilità e istruzione: perché il Signore prolungando in questo spazio di tempo la sua presenza corporale quaggiù, la nostra fede nella risurrezione vi trovasse le prove e la conferma necessarie. Perché la morte di Cristo aveva turbato assai i cuori dei discepoli: e lo stordimento della diffidenza era penetrato nei loro spiriti resi pesanti dall'angoscia causata dal suo supplizio sulla croce, dal suo ultimo sospiro, dalla sepoltura del suo corpo esanime.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. E tempo che me ne torni a colui che mi ha mandato, dice il Signore: non vogliate rattristarvi, né si turbi il vostro cuore:

Perciò i beatissimi Apostoli e tutti i discepoli, ch'erano sgomenti per la morte (di Gesù) sulla croce ed avevano esitato sulla fede nella sua risurrezione, furono talmente confermati dall'evidenza della verità, che, lungi dall'essere rattristati al vedere il Signore ascendere nelle altezze dei cieli, furono al contrario ripieni di grande gioia. E certo, c'era là una grande ed ineffabile causa di gioia, allorquando in presenza di questa santa moltitudine, una natura umana s'innalzava al di sopra della dignità di tutte le creature celesti, per sorpassare gli ordini Angelici, per essere elevata più alto degli Arcangeli, e non arrestarsi nelle sue elevazioni sublimi che allorquando, ricevuta nella dimora dell'eterno Padre, ella sarebbe associata al trono e alla gloria di colui alla natura del quale si trovava già unita nel Figlio.

Omelia 29 sul Vangelo
Il ritardo che i discepoli frapposero nel credere alla risurrezione del Signore, non fu tanto loro debolezza quanto, per così dire, nostra sicurezza futura. Difatti a motivo del loro dubbio, la risurrezione fu dimostrata con molte prove: e noi quando leggiamo questi fatti, non siamo forse confermati dalla loro esitazione? La storia di Maria Maddalena, che credé subito, mi è meno utile di quella di Tommaso che dubitò per molto tempo. Perché questi, dubitando, toccò le cicatrici delle ferite (del Salvatore) e tolse così dal nostro cuore la piaga del dubbio.

Per far penetrare in noi la verità della risurrezione del Signore, dobbiamo notare quel che riferisce Luca, dicendo: «Essendo insieme a mensa comandò loro di non allontanarsi da Gerusalemme» Act. 1,4. E poco dopo: «A vista di essi, si levò in alto, e una nube lo tolse agli occhi loro» Act. 1,9. Notate queste parole, osservate questi misteri. Dopo essere stato a mensa con essi, si levò in alto. Mangiò, e (poi) ascese: affin di renderci manifesta coll'azione del mangiare, la realtà della sua carne. Ma Marco ricorda che il Signore prima di ascendere in cielo, rimproverò ai discepoli la durezza del loro cuore e la loro incredulità. Dopo aver ripresa la loro durezza, sentiamo ciò ch'egli comanda: «Andate per tutto il mondo, predicate il Vangelo ad ogni creatura» Marc. 16,15. Forse che, fratelli miei, il santo Vangelo doveva predicarsi alle cose insensate, o agli animali privi di ragione, e perciò si dice ai discepoli: «Predicate ad ogni creatura»? Ma col nome di «ogni creatura» qui si indica l'uomo. L'uomo infatti ha qualche cosa di ogni creatura. Perché l'essere gli è comune colle pietre, la vita cogli alberi, la sensibilità cogli animali, l'intelligenza cogli Angeli. Se dunque l'uomo ha qualche cosa di comune con ogni creatura, si può dire, in qualche modo, che l'uomo è ogni creatura. Perciò il Vangelo è predicato ad ogni creatura, quando si predica all'uomo solo.

1st on the Lords Ascension
After the blessed and glorious Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, wherein the Divine Power raised up in three days the true Temple of God Which the iniquity of the Jews had destroyed John ii. 19, God was pleased to ordain, by His Most Sacred Will, and in His Providence for our instruction and the profit of our souls, a season of forty days which season, dearly beloved brethren, doth end on this day. During that season the bodily Presence of the Lord still lingered on earth, that the reality of the fact of His having risen again from the dead might be armed with all needful proofs. The death of Christ had troubled the hearts of many of His disciples their thoughts were sad when they remembered His agony upon the Cross, His giving up of the Ghost, and the laying in the grave of His lifeless Body, and a sort of hesitation had begun to weigh on them.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

I may be allowed to say that the disciples' slowness to believe that the Lord had indeed risen from the dead, was not so much their weakness as our strength. In consequence of their doubts, the fact of the Resurrection was demonstrated by many infallible proofs. These proofs we read and acknowledge. What then assureth our faith, if not their doubt? For my part, I put my trust in Thomas, who doubted long, much more than in Mary Magdalene, who believed at once. Through his doubting, he came actually to handle the holes of the Wounds, and thereby closed up any wound of doubt in our hearts.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Now confirm to our minds the trustworthiness of the fact that our Lord did indeed rise again from the dead, it is well for us to remark one of the statements of Luke Acts i. 4. “Eating together with them, He commanded them that they should not 1 John xiv. 16, 17 xvi. 7. depart from Jerusalem and a little afterward: “While they beheld, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.” Consider these words, note well these mysteries. After “eating together with them He was taken up.” He ate and ascended: that the fact of His eating might show the reality of the Body in Which He went up. But Mark telleth us that before the Lord ascended into heaven, He upbraided His disciples; with their unbelief and hardness of heart. From this I know not why we should gather, but that the Lord then upbraided His disciples, for whom He was about to be parted in the body, to the end that the words which He spoke unto them as He left them might be the deeper imprinted on their hearts.

In Spagna i santi Torquàto Tesifónte, Secóndo, Indalèzio, Cecilio, Esichio ed Eufràsio, ordinati Vescovi a Roma dai santi Apostoli, e mandati nelle Spagne a predicare la divina parola. Avendo evangelizzato varie città e convertito alla fede di Cristo innumerevoli moltitudini, morirono in diversi luoghi di quella regione; cioè Torquàto a Càdice, Tesifónte a Virze, Secóndo in Avila, Indalèzio a Pasquèna, Cecilio in Elvira, Esichio a Gibiltèrra ed Eufràsio in Andujar.
A Terranòva, nella Sardègna, san Simplicio, Vescovo e Martire, il quale, al tempo di Diocleziano, sotto il Preside Bàrbaro, trapassato da una lancia compì il martirio.
