Giovanni Battista de la Salle, nato a Reims da illustre casato, fanciullo ancora fece presagire colla sua condotta e colle sue azioni che sarebbe chiamato a scegliere il Signore per sua porzione e adornato un giorno dell'aureola della santità. Giovanetto apprese lettere e scienze filosofiche nell'accademia di Reims: nel qual tempo, sebbene per le doti dell'animo e per l'indole vivace e dolce fosse caro a tutti, pure egli aborriva la compagnia degli eguali per potersi consacrare più facilmente a Dio nella solitudine. Arruolatosi già nella milizia clericale, a sedici anni fu annoverato fra i canonici di Reims. Poi andò a Parigi per studiarvi teologia nell'università della Sorbona, e fu accolto nel seminario dei Sulpiziani. Ma poco dopo mortigli i genitori, fu costretto a tornare a casa ad assumersi l'educazione dei fratelli; cosa che, senza punto interrompere lo studio delle scienze sacre, compì con grandissimo frutto, come lo provò l'esito.

Consacrato finalmente sacerdote, colla stessa viva fede e fervore di spirito onde salì la prima volta l'altare, continuò poi a celebrare per tutto il restante della vita. Frattanto acceso di zelo per la salvezza delle anime, si consacrò tutto alla loro utilità. Assunse il governo delle Suore di Gesù bambino istituite per l'educazione delle fanciulle; e non solo le governò con somma prudenza, ma le salvò altresì dalla rovina. D'allora pertanto rivolse l'animo ad istruire i fanciulli del popolo nella religione e nei buoni costumi. E Dio l'aveva suscitato proprio a questo, perché provvedesse cioè di scuole i fanciulli sopratutto poveri, in maniera efficace e permanente, mediante la fondazione nella sua Chiesa d'una nuova famiglia di religiosi. In mezzo a moltissime contraddizioni e grandi prove, egli compì felicemente la missione dalla divina provvidenza affidatagli, fondando una congregazione di fratelli che chiamò delle Scuole cristiane.

Prima pertanto raccolse presso di sé gli uomini che s'erano a lui uniti in un'opera sì importante e ardua; poi, stabilitisi in miglior sede, li formò ottimamente alla sua disciplina, mediante quelle leggi sapienti, che furono poi confermate da Benedetto XIII. Per umiltà e amore alla povertà rinunziò subito al canonicato, anzi più tardi depose spontaneamente, dopo avere spesso tentato invano di farlo, il governo dell'istituto che aveva fondato. Frattanto non rallentando affatto nella sollecitudine per i fratelli e per le scuole da lui aperte in più luoghi, cominciò a dedicarsi più intensamente a Dio. Incrudeliva contro se stesso con assidui digiuni, flagellazioni ed altre austerità, e passava le notti pregando. Finché, illustre per ogni virtù, sopratutto per l'obbedienza, diligenza nel compiere la divina volontà, nell'amore e devozione alla Sede apostolica, carico di meriti, ricevuti i consueti sacramenti, si addormentò nel Signore a settantadue anni di età. Il sommo Pontefice Leone XIII l'inserì nell'albo dei Beati; risplendendo poi per nuovi miracoli, l'anno del giubileo 1900 lo decorò degli onori dei Santi.

Con ciò egli ci avverte d'essere più diligenti nel custodire e preservare i piccini. Vedi che grandi ripari ha egli innalzato a difesa dei piccini, e quanto studio e cura abbia perché non si perdano; sia stabilendo delle pene severissime per quelli che li disprezzano, sia promettendo la massima ricompensa a quelli che ne hanno cura, e lo conferma col suo e con l'esempio del Padre.

John Baptist de La Salle, born of an honourable family at Reims, when still a boy shewed by his manners and actions that he was called by destiny to the Lord, and was to be adorned with the excellence of holiness. As a youth he studied literature and the philosophical sciences at the academy at Rheims. During this time, although his mental powers and his lively and pleasant disposition endeared him to all, he nevertheless shrank from the company of his fellows, so that, being inclined to solitude, he might the more easily find time for God. Already having been for some time enlisted in the ranks of the clergy, he was enrolled among the canons of Reims at the age of sixteen years. He went to Paris to study theology at the university of the Sorbonne, and was admitted to the Sulpician seminary. But he was soon forced to return home because of the death of his parents, and undertook the education of his brothers, which he carried on, without meanwhile interrupting his sacred studies, and with the greatest success, as was proved by subsequent events.

And, indeed, this duty, entrusted to him by Divine providence, was successfully accomplished, in spite of very much opposition and great hardships, by the foundation of an institute of brothers which he named the Christian Schools.

The Supreme Pontiff Leo XIII placed him in the list of the Blessed; and, illustrious by new miracles, he was adorned with honours of the Saints in the year of jubilee, 1900. Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones, saith the Lord, for their Angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. It was as though he had said: It was for them that I came, because this is the will of my Father. Thus doth he make it our duty to be full of thought and care for the protection and safety of these little ones. Ye see what vast ramparts he hath built for the protection of the little ones, and how much care and trouble he hath taken that they shall not be lost; yea, he pronounceth extreme penalties on them that despise them; and for them that undertake to care wholeheartedly for them he promiseth most high rewards. And all these things of his teaching, he doth further enforce by his own example and by the example of the eternal Father himself.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. This is he which wrought great wonders before God, and praised the Lord with all his heart.
